No other musical on the continent - and only one elsewhere in the world - has been performed in the same place for so long as STARLIGHT EXPRESS. For 28 years, without any breaks, at least seven times a week. In January 2014, the 10.000th show was performed. Ever since its much acclaimed debut in 1988, this exceptional production has been writing history. The unusual theatre, comprising a semi-arena with approx. 1700 seats, was built exclusively for the musical, gaining the show its first entry into the Guinness book of records. Its second entry was for the highest ever production costs. In 2010, Guinness World Records, London, declared STARLIGHT EXPRESS to be the show boasting the world highest number of visitors at one location. STARLIGHT EXPRESS is one of the most elaborate productions ever to have been staged. The interplay of technology and dramaturgy are unrivalled. Stunt skaters fly over the stage, and the roller-skating ensemble reaches speeds of up to 60km/h. They fly right past the noses of the audience, drawing back the curtain on a dynamic and romantic world. Daredevil acrobatics and enthralling songs follow hot on the heels of enchanting dance scenes and poignant ballads. The dazzling costumes, dramatically put in the limelight by the intricate lighting system, are the final touch perfecting this show. Goose pimples are guaranteed when, in the highlight of this musical, Rusty meets the legendary “Starlight Express”. Countless stars twinkle overhead, and the young steam engine sings one of the most beautiful songs in the world together with "Papa". Every show is followed by feverishly enthusiastic standing ovations. For its 25th birthday in June 2013, STARLIGHT EXPRESS was given a fresh makeover with a new light and laser show. The sound system was also replaced to guarantee highest quality with new technology. And another thing to delight audiences: star composer Andrew Lloyd Webber invented the world train engine championships quarter of a century ago. 15 million visitors later, his son Alastair has written a love ballad for STARLIGHT EXPRESS: “I do”. STARLIGHT EXPRESS in Bochum is the most successful musical in the world. Since its opening on June 12th, 1988 more than 15 million people have seen the train race championships and there’s no end in sight! Even the shows on the New York Broadway and the London Westend can’t keep up with this record attendance. People from all over Germany and nearby countries come to see Andrew Lloyd Webber’s masterpiece. 26 singers and dancers in fancy costumes bring the alltime favourite childhood dream to life. A total of 40 cast members combine acting, dancing, singing and of course skating to an energetic life-show. One evening, a mother tells her small child to tidy away his train set and go to bed. In the child’s dream, the engines and coaches come to life. From far away, trains are coming in to the station: it’s the night of the world train engine championships. The young steam engine Rusty, a lovable but technologically out-of-date character, seems to have no chance against his modern opponents. Rusty fights desperately against the macho Greaseball. With his overconfident air, Greaseball - who rocks like Elvis - turns all the ladies’ knees weak. And when Electra, the modern electric engine, appears it looks as though there’s no hope at all left for the young steam engine. The beautiful Pearl, a first-class coach, leaves Rusty to join Electra. Three, two one - go! The flags go down, lights flash, helmets sparkle. At amazing speed, the engines and their coaches fly over the track. The conflict between the engines gets increasingly intense – and fair means and foul are all used in the international race. Suddenly, the legendary “Starlight Express” appears like a bright comet in the sky. The night is studded with twinkling stars as Rusty learns what life is all about: trusting in yourself. Filled with new courage, he enters the final race. And Pearl begins to realise who she really loves... The musical, created by the English composer-legend Andrew Lloyd Webber, celebrated its first German performance on June 12th, 1988. Webber, whose first musical was “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat” in 1971, has brought numerous productions to stage: “Evita”, “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “Cats”, “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Aspects of Love” are just a selection of his works. But not only Andrew Lloyd Webber, who wrote the wonderful music, was responsible for the emerge of STARLIGHT EXPRESS. Also Richard Stilgoe (lyrics) and Trevor Nunn (direction) as well as Arlene Philipps, who directed respectively choreographed the dance numbers, contributed a great part to its success..“ The STARLIGHT EXPRESS-Theatre in Bochum, which was built especially for the show, is located centrally near the motorway A40 and was completed in record time. Construction began in December 1986 and was finished in January 1988. The set design as well as the constructive drawings of the machinery were available in September 1987. The installation of the decoration in the hall took merely four months, from January to April 1988. On June 12th, 1988 STARLIGHT EXPRESS finally had its premiere and has been running nonstop, seven times a week, since then. Performances are daily – except for Mondays and Tuesdays – at 8.00 pm (6.30 pm on Wednesdays, 7 pm on Sundays), Saturdays additionally at 3 pm and Sundays additionally at 2 pm. The ensemble of STARLIGHT EXPRESS is international. The actors come from England, America, Germany, the Netherlands and other countries – the musical accomplishes a mixture of a lot of different nationalities. The 26 roles, exclusively played by singers and dancers on roller skates, are casted multiply, so the whole cast makes up more than 40 persons. Ready, steady, go! Flags fall, lights flash, helmets shine. The old steam engine “Papa” starts the race with “Dustin”, the coal car. The brake car “Caboose” takes a sharp turn at 40 mph closely followed by “Hashamoto”, the Japanese Express, dashing down the 280 metre circuit through the auditorium on roller skates. Night after night the audience in Bochum can experience the thrilling race of the STARLIGHT EXPRESS. The production costs of STARLIGHT EXPRESS totalled 20 million US$. Unique lightning effects and fascinating stage techniques contribute a crucial part to the immense success of this impressive musical. More than 10.000 people can witness up to glistening stars in the STARLIGHT EXPRESS – Theater every night. The technical main attraction is a nine ton hydraulic bridge hovering above the stage. It links different stage levels on which singers and dancers can perform. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s STARLIGHT EXPRESS is a perfect combination of wonderful, timeless music, acrobatic skate action and exceptional stage techniques. The production employs more than 150 people backstage, counting cast and orchestra, plus 160 in the front of the house.
