Heart felt greetings to all as we welcome February.
I liken mid-February to a Wednesday; we are over the “hump” on our way to spring and Show
Season (Friday) is just around the corner! With those thoughts in mind, the 2012 MDC Board is
moving full steam ahead preparing, updating and revising aspects of the 2012 show season in
effort to better service its members.
Here are some very important announcements:
The end of January brought exceptionally good news to the Michiana Dressage Club.
We were awarded the Violet M. Hopkins grant from the Dressage Foundation.
http://www.dressagefoundation.org/home_1.htm
Generous assistance was provided to bring you the wonderful educational opportunity of participating and or auditing the Reese Koffler-Stanfield clinic on April 21-22, hosted by Chardon
Valley Farm in Dectaur, MI. An announcement, a biography of Ms. Koffler-Stanfield, Rider
Application and Auditor Registration are included in this month’s newsletter. If you have any
questions regarding the clinic, please contact me at [email protected].
MDC would like to encourage you to renew your membership or join the club. Membership
provides you with an annual omnibus, newsletter, clinic participation, educational seminars,
and eligibility for year-end awards. A reminder, your 2012 membership needs to be current
prior to showing for those points/scores received to count towards year-end awards. A membership application is included in this newsletter.
We are offering a full season of nine shows beginning on May 19th and concluding on October
6th. For your consideration, the show hosts are from a variety of locations in Indiana and Michigan. Please refer to the MDC 2012 Show Schedule in this newsletter for information regarding
hosts, locations and contact information.
I would like to invite the membership to chase the winter blues away by attending our next
Board Meeting on Wednesday February 15, at 6:00pm, at the home of Elizabeth Grainger
58290 Ramblewood Road South Bend, IN. Please email me at [email protected]
or call if you have questions (574) 251-9694.
Please know if you have any questions or concerns to contact the Board Officers or myself. It is
our pleasure to continue the service and the growth of the Michiana Dressage Club.
Wishing you and your equine friends all the best,
Elizabeth Grainger
2012 MDC President
The Michiana Dressage Club welcomes all levels of Dressage riders from Northern Indiana,
Southern Michigan and surrounding areas. During each show season clinics and schooling
shows are held at different locations throughout the area. The season ends with an awards
banquet where members receive recognition of their achievements for the year.

By Amanda Pierce
I had to take my mare Kerry to the vet a few weeks ago. She was having a
mild amount of swelling in her hind legs, and I could not decide if she had become
sore or if she was having a mild reaction to her change of hay. She was sound,
but since she is my current and only ride, my husband and I hauled her to the vet
for a quick exam. I am a firm believer in catching problems early, so as a small
issue does not become a large one. My husband wants a happy wife, and a vet exam is a minimal price to pay to keep me that way! After flexions, twisting, trotting out, and much discussion, we decided she was growing butt high and needed
her teeth floated. Thank God, she was cleared to go back to work. We sedated the
heck out of her, and I struggled to hold her head up high enough while the vet
rasped like mad at her teeth. Once done, Kerry was still pretty much out of it.
My husband always says that Kerry is fat. Mind you she’s one half Irish
Draught and out of a Connemara/Tb mare. I say she’s big boned, with a large hip,
and she is built to carry twins full term. The vet had a horse scale outside of the
stall we did her teeth in, so I coaxed her half asleep onto it to show him she was
just an average horse. My little Kerry is 1221 lbs and stands 15 hands high. My
vet agreed that she is just a big bodied, big boned mare. My husband laughed,
and said, “she’s fat!”. Now she’s not even 5 yet. These horses are supposed to grow
until 7 or 8, she’s massive now. I think if I am to move her along in the dressage
world I better start to focus on fitness. To be honest she is a bit chunky, and a bit
lazy, and from afar, you would think she could be foaling out twins this spring.
She does have ample padding in more places than one, and if she did have twins
maybe they would suck some of the weight off of her. I guess its time to turn my
athletic horse into an athlete.
I have trained at eventing barns, polo farms, and race tracks. If there is one
thing those three sports have in common, its fit horses. They get worked hard. I
do not feed any grain on my farm. None of the horses here work that hard. When
you go to a track and jog a horse 4 miles per day plus do speed work, when you
ride a polo pony 5 miles a day and stick and ball them, or when you take a cross
country lesson and gallop and jump, those horses are working hard. Kerry is
young, she gets maybe 35 minutes a day, 4 days a week in a ring, sometimes we
finish that with a ten minute hack around the farm. The only time Kerry sweats
is when we are late delivering her hay.
Well, I have had a change of heart for 2012. She is getting fit! She may not
know it yet, and I don’t think I will tell her, but she’s going to work!
Kerry is going to hack out all over the farm, she
going to do laps around the fields and I am going
to hand gallop her to build her wind. My husband
loves to see me happy, so he’s going to build me
some caveletti (I haven’t told him yet either)! We
are going to do trot sets, and canter sets. I am going to work her till she sweats. This summer
when we get to a show, she will not be dead to the
world after the first 20 meter canter circle. Up
until now, I have babied her along. Kerry is going
to miss those first 5 years, of , “ Ooohhh she’s just
a baby….I can’t push her or make her sore or
tired.”. I am so ready for my big girl to grow up.
Last year my trainer told me that I have to get
her working and pushing through so we can develop her medium gaits. If I want to move up, she
has to have medium gaits. I want to move up, and I want her to go with me. One
way to get her going is by working hard, and expecting more. Mind you, I will
make it fun for both of us. It’s a new year though, and I have goals set. I know
that the flat work is hard for our horses, but I am going to take a whole horse approach to this season and have hopes we have great results and good times. Wish
us luck and I look forward to show season!
