Round 13:Western New York Off-Road Association (WYNOA) Hare Scramble Series
BINGHAMTON, NY, October 3, 2010
H
urd Motorsports, promoters of the Broome-Tioga Sports
Center, hosted round 13 of the Western New York Off-Road
Association’s (WNYOA) Hare Scramble Series on Sunday,
October 3, in Binghamton, New York. Mother Nature was somewhat
cooperative. The good Mother brought sunshine and blue skies
to upstate New York on event day but ravaged the area with
several inches of rain in the days preceding the event.
Track conditions looked deceiving as the motocross portion
of the eight mile hare scramble track looked quite dry and even
kicked up some dust for some of the later starting classes. The
woods sections, however, were anything but dry and in fact turned
out to be quite muddy and extremely slippery for most sections of
the long and technical hare scramble racecourse.
The WNYOA race series uses a transponder system for scoring.
Mechanics and spectators can monitor their riders lap times and
position in real time on several large screen monitors near the exit
of the special test section.
The transponder system works very well, especially for mud
races. Scoring this race manually would have been a nightmare
due to the muddy woods sections that made virtually every rider
unrecognizable after one lap. Lap times for the AA and A classes
were averaging almost 25 minutes per lap.
The WNYOA Hare Scramble Series has been a huge success
even in these tough economic times. Rider turnout was excellent
for round 13 but down slightly from previous rounds.
The WNYOA officials incorporated an extreme test section at
the end of the eight mile loop that consisted of basically, a section of racetrack that you would find at virtually any round of the
now, every popular, National Endurocross Series. The section included a tractor tire jump at the section entrance as well as tractor
tire obstacles and log sections and another tractor tire jump at the
exit. Riders had the option to take an alternate section around the
special test but doing so would penalize riders by adding several
seconds to their lap times.
This weeks race report will be taking a slightly different turn due
to the fact that identifying riders became virtually impossible after
the opening lap.
Rather than just recapping start order, lap times and finish order
of certain classes, the remaining space of this weeks report will use
pictures to tell the story . . .
