President’s welcome
Dear new students!
It is a great pleasure for me to welcome you to Copenhagen Business School, one of the most international
universities in Denmark. You are about to embark on a
very exciting and inspiring venture that will not only build
the foundation for your future career, but most likely also
affect you for the rest of your life.
As a new student you may find it overwhelming to meet
an institution with more than 20,000 students and over
1,300 teachers. But don’t worry; we will take good care of
you. First, you will be
properly introduced
to CBS in a comprehensive introductory program
offered to you by older students who know how to survive
in a large university, both socially and academically. Next
you will soon find out that in spite of our size your daily
study environment is manageable, with room for friendships and a good social life in addition to the studies.
Being a CBS student also means hard work
At CBS we are strongly committed to offer you teaching
of high quality. Our teaching is research based, meaning that what you learn in class is based on the newest
international knowledge. But it also means that you will
not only learn facts. More importantly you will be trained
to think critically, ask questions, and learn a methodology to acquire new knowledge in order to solve unfamiliar
problems. At the same time, we want our teaching to be
relevant and useful in practice. Therefore, we combine
theory with real life cases and a large number of our
teachers have professional business careers in addition
to their teaching at CBS. This interaction between theory
and practice guarantees that your skills are immediately
applicable in your future professional career.
Extracurricular activities adds to your
personal development
Studying at CBS not only offers you academic challenges.
You will have ample opportunities to engage in social
and professional activities that are not direct part of your
study, but will contribute to your personal development as
a future leader.
CBS students have initiated a large number of activities
that make study life fun and personally stimulating. CBS
Case Competition, CBS Sport, Venture Cup, Green initiative
are just a few examples, and I encourage you to explore all
these opportunities, and participate in those that are of interest to you. By engaging socially as well as academically
I am sure you will get the most out of your years here at
CBS. Once again, a WARM welcome to CBS and good luck
with your studies!

CBS – The Business
School In Copenhagen
1917-2013
From private
business school
to the largest
business university
in Northern Europe
CBS actually started out as
a privately owned and run
institution
The school was established in 1917
by a business association, ‘Foreningen
til Unge Handelsmænds Uddannelse’
or ‘FUHU’, which translates more or
less into ‘The Association for Young
Businessmen’s Education’.
Since then the association has
changed its name. However, even to
this day, the Association has a major
stake in CBS, as landlord of Porcelænshaven and external partner when it
comes to locating and electing members to the CBS Board of Directors.
Under the Danish university laws
and regulations the owner of CBS has
since 1965 been the state.
Business schools have earlier in history been called ‘shopkeepers schools’.
Getting CBS accepted and respected
as a university of equal academic
standing to the traditional universities has thus taken its time. The same
doesn’t apply to the educations, since
CBS’ BSc in Economics and Business
Administration has been Denmark’s
single largest university study program for many years.
CBS shifts to a more
international focus with
new disciplines
About 25 years ago CBS, who at
that time was called HHK – Handelshøjskolen I København – began
turning its focus towards a more
international outlook and experimenting with combining traditional
business school disciplines with
disciplines like languages, philosophy, mathematics and others, in both
the school’s research and education.
This trail-blazing led to a growth
in many different directions – new
study programs combining disciplines, running the largest exchange
program in Denmark and establish-
ing some of Denmark’s first English
language study programs. At this time
the school began to brand itself as
CBS – Copenhagen Business School –
instead of the Danish term.
This growth led to CBS starting to
spread out to other areas of Copenhagen and Frederiksberg establishing
activities at other premises. Today the
campus of CBS consists of the following buildings on Frederiksberg: Solbjerg Plads (opened in 2000), Dalgas
Have (opened in 1988), Kilen (opened
in 2006) and Porcelænshaven (opened
in 2005). The campus you meet today
is thus a result of a push starting in
the mid 90’s, culminating with the
INTRO
9
complete renovation of the building
at Porcelænshaven (which was finished in 2009). However the big success CBS has experienced has some
consequences. On one hand CBS is
getting more and more crowded, as
an increasing number of students
are applying. As a result of this CBS
has to stretch and find new places
to spread out the activities. Just this
year CBS has taken over an exam hall
on Amager. On the other hand there
is continually new and exciting study
programs popping up, which gives
CBS a broad and relevant profile.
CBS doesn’t just sprawl,
it also unifies
In the beginning there were two
faculties; The Faculty of Business
Economics and the Faculty of Business languages. However, today there
is only one. There used to be two
(at times more) student political organizations, the main ones being The
Student’s Council (DSR) and Moderate
Students (MS) – today there’s only one
– CBS Students.
This is just a bare minimum… a scattering of facts… about the 95 year old
business school, or rather business
university, that you have just started
at. Go find out more for yourself – the
campus, the library, the canteens
and cafés, the student organizations
and social activities and all the other
stuff. It’s a little world of its own, and
it offers a community base for you,
from where you can start off into the
rest of the world. The world of CBS is
now a part of your world.

Find your books
Academic Books is the student
bookstore at CBS. They work closely
together with the lectures and are the
ones who make your syllabus lists.
The syllabus lists will be found in the
store and on www.academicbooks.dk.
You can also register on academicbooks.dk and get a message as soon
as your syllabus list is ready.
Stay safe - our main concern
is your safety
Welcome to CBS - At CBS we do a lot
to make students and staff stay as
good and safe as possible.
Evacuation – at the sound of
the alarm:
If the alarm sounds, you must evacuate the building immediately and go
to the nearest assembly point as indicated on the evacuation plan posted
on the inside of all classroom doors.
On E-Campus www.e-campus.dk/
faciliteter/evakueringsplan you can
see all of our evacuation plans.
Beware of thieves – never leave personal
belongings unattended in classrooms.
At CBS, your student ID card is your
access to several services at CBS. You
need it to go dancing at Nexus Thursday night and for your exams. If you
should be so unfortunate to lose it, it
is very important that you get a new
one before your next exam.
The card can also be used as a library
card and a coin card for CBS Students
printing.
Remember to smile ☺
On your Students ID card there
must be a lifelike picture of you – so
remember to smile. Take your picture
at one of the photo posts – one post
is located at the ground floor at Dalgas Have’s east wing, known as the
blue end. The other photo post is at
Solbjerg Plads on the first floor in the
library. Once your photo is registered
all you need to do is to pick up your
card at IT-Support approximately one
week later.

CBS Library
Quality Information at Your Fingertips
You are going to need a lot of new
information and insights once you
embark on your CBS studies. CBS Library offers a world of knowledge and
world class study facilities to ensure
that you have the best possible setting for achieving your goals.
You probably already know Google
and Wikipedia and are familiar with
the public library system. CBS Library
is different as it offers you access to
more than 100 specialized databases
containing e-books, articles, company
data, market reports, statistics, and
much more – information you will
need as a CBS student.
Today they are looking for books in
the reserve collection, a separate collection of curricular literature.
Sometimes they also use the library
from home: “It is easy and efficient
to search, no matter where you are”.
They add: “When we get an assignment, we use the library - and
we’re often surprised by how much
information is available through the
library’s databases”.
By using remote access Anja and
Sisse can find anything from articles
to company profiles from home. They
encourage new CBS students to take
advantage of the
library databases even
if it is a little bit difficult in the beginning. “You get access
to so much more than just Google, it is
very useful.”
So much more than just Google!
On a sunny day in May we visited CBS
Library and met some CBS students.
Anja Pallesen and Sisse Meier are 6th
semester IMK students. They usually
visit CBS Library to borrow books or
to take a break in the lounge area
while waiting for friends.
Julie Christiansen is a sixth semester
HA (mat.) student. She is currently
completing her final bachelor assignment and enjoys the special evening
atmosphere at CBS Library. ”People
seem very focused, something that
pushes me to work harder”. She
has made a booking for one of the
Bloomberg terminals available in
the library as she needs information
about share prices for her assignment.
Anja, Sisse, and Julie all enjoy the
stylish library and even if students
sometimes compete for study seats
they are satisfied with what the
library has to offer. And, as Sisse adds,
it is nice that you can always get help
from a librarian on the phone, by chat
or in person.
Visit www.e-campus.dk/library
to see all CBS Library services,
to register as a patron, or to book
a study group room or study seat.
We promised CBS Library to let
you know, that they are looking forward to meeting you and
your new fellow students.

CBS Mentor Program
Experienced students helping you
find your way
New students meet different challenges but all have one thing in common: you will have a lot to learn and a lot to adapt to. Talking with your
very own mentor who has been through it all her- or himself will help make
your successful transition to student life easier. CBS Mentor consists
of friendly and experienced students who offer you their help through
your first year of study.
The mentor
The meetings
You will meet your mentor for the
first time during the intro period
and again through about five mentor meetings during your first nine
months of study. She or he will be a
dedicated and experienced student
from your own programme. Your
mentor will have a broad understanding of many different ways of being
a student and many different study
techniques. And he or she will be
trained in mentoring and helping.
The mentor meetings will figure
in your student schedule and the
mentors will give you information in
advance about the different mentor
meetings. You can also contact your
mentor and arrange a one-on-one
meeting if there is something you
need input and ideas to achieve.
We asked some of last year’s
mentors for their top tips for
developing successful study
techniques. Here are 10 of
their best ideas:
The CBS mentors are
offering you a guiding hand.
- Grab it!
The topics
The mentor meetings take place in
small groups where one mentor and
about 10 students discuss different
topics that are relevant to your programme. Topics include study techniques, exams and exam preparation,
managing group work, planning your
time and coping with demands and
expectations. The mentors will also
help you understand the point of the
different courses and how the different courses and other study elements
relate to each other.
CBS Equal opportunity
For students with disabling features or students who in other ways might
have special needs, CBS Equal Opportunity Office offers a mentor program
to offer support regarding full participation in student life – both socially

1 Expectations/ambitions:
“Realize what your ambitions are and
be realistic about it! Remember to
make room in your calendar for “fun”
things (working out, friends, family
etc.). It also gives you energy”, says
Jeppe Rasmussen, fourth semester
IMK(Spanish) student.
2 Time management:
"Make a timetable or plan to structure and manage your time in the
best possible way- especially when
you have to hand in assignments.
In that way, you won´t loose track
of time and feel stressed out”, says
Martina Michelsen, sixth semester
EOK student
3 Use the facilities:
“CBS offers great libraries and rooms
for studying. Use these as your workplace, so your home does not become
your office, but merely a place to relax and have fun”, says Sidsel Green,
second semester IBP student.
4 Lectures:
“Attend all the lectures and pay
attention to what the professor
explains. The more you listen and
understand your lectures, the easier
it will be, when you later have to prepare that material for the exam”, says
Emilio Rios Galvez, fourth semester
International Marketing and Management student.
5 Focus your reading on the
most important:
“Find out how the texts in your subject are typically presented (structure,
form, content), and learn to organize your reading in accordance with
its object. Have focus on distinguish
between important and unimportant
parts of the text - you don't have to
read everything! Take notes if that
helps you remember the theories”,
says Morten Normann Nielsen, fourth
semester Ha (Kom.) student.
6 Participate:
"Study for and participate in class,
but most importantly: Participate
in one or more of the many student
organizations at CBS. The friends,
the network, and the new inputs are
indispensable ", says Henrik H. Lønne,
third semester Cand.Merc. BCM
student.
7 Interact with your
lecturers:
“ Talk to the lecturer after class or
during the break to give and receive
feedback. Also, show interest and
engagement –it pays off in the end”,
says Sarah Elizabeth Marcussen, sixth
semester EOK student.
8 Study groups:
''It is not always a good idea to be in a
study group with the same people that
you party with, although it might seem
like a great idea-quickly it can become
frivolous'', says Kristian Lange, fourth
semester Ha (Jur) student.
9 Help:
”If you are in doubt whether you have
chosen the right filed of study, have
problems with studying or with other
things, then use the student guidance service. Book a meeting, and
talk to them about it. They are very
competent”, says Cathrine Pihl, sixth
semester EOK student.
10 Take it easy:
“Your fellow students are grappling
with the same academic problems
as you are. Dialogue is an important
way to learn the academic challenges
in your courses – remember not
everyone can be top students!”, says
Nicklas Kold Nagel, second semester
student IMK (English) student.

Spot A Student Organization
At CBS there is a variety of different student organizations, gathered around different interests. Applying harshly illuminating stereotyping, the student organizations at CBS can be
divided into; The Feinschmeckers, The Internationals, The Business Philanthropists,
The Suits, The Jocks and The Entrepreneurs.
You are always welcome to engage yourself in one of the student organizations or even to start your own. Being a member of a
student organization is a perfect way to share interests, meet new people or perhaps learn about the business aspects within a small
organization. If you are curious about which one to join, check them out at the Student Society Day, which with a setup similar to the
Career Fair, will familiarize you with all the student organizations of CBS. This year it will be on September 20th from 10.00-15.00. From
the descriptions below you can find out which group you can relate to. You might even be able to spot some different stereotypes
within the student organizations in the halls of CBS.

Student Politics
– University Democracy
As a student at CBS you have a say in how your time at university should
progress. CBS is governed by the Danish University Law, which proscribes
organizational democracy. This means that you as a student can take part in
deciding how CBS should develop – both on a very strategic and a very practical
level. Ultimately, you have the possibility to control exactly what University you
would like CBS to be.
Any democracy requires elections
to elect candidates that represent
the population. Similarly, CBS has
a yearly university election where
you can either run to become a
student representative, or vote for
your favorite candidate. CBS holds
the national record for highest voting
percentage and we hope that you will
(and we urge you to) vote in the election in November.
The Study Board – Where
you decide how your study
program should run!
The Study Board is the governing
body of your specific education. This
is where you develop the individual
study programs, change the curriculum, add new courses, change
exam formats etc. Basically, almost
everything that involves your specific
education can be changed via your
study board, and students have equal
positions in the board, alongside
faculty and administration. Students
at CBS have a proud tradition of being
active study board members and have
successfully reformed their educations to the benefit of future student
– that means you!
If you are interested in being part
of administrating and developing a
whole study program, you should
consider running for the study board
and help make CBS a better university. You will both have the chance to
affect your own program and improve
it for the future, as such passing the
torch of your work to future students.
Being a student representative
requires you to take on significant
responsibility and some work is
unavoidable. However, it will also give
you valuable experience and knowledge that will help you in your future
career. You will get to know the inner
workings of a massive institution and
you will be part of growing movement
at CBS, of active volunteer student
representatives, all working to make
CBS as good a place as possible, for all
students.

Holy Crap! It’s Time For
It can be more than a little scary to
face your first exam as a student at CBS.
Once you start feeling familiar with life at
CBS, you are expected to excel at an exam.
A sudden overwhelming sense of “Holy
Crap!” spreads throughout campus in the
days leading up to the first exam of the
semester.
Thankfully, you are far from the first
student at CBS to worry about exams.
Many more have gone before you, and
usually the result is not too bad. This
article will address some general concerns
and formal requirements about exams,
which can help calm your nerves when
the “Holy Crap-feeling” starts getting a
little too overwhelming.
As a student there may be situations
where you don’t feel that your exam
or teaching was properly handled. In
such cases you have the right to file
a complaint. Read more at www.ecampus.dk/studium/eksamensklager.
Hakuna Matata
First of all: Take it easy. Even though
exams might be a bit frightening, remember not to worry. The truth is, if
you are smart enough to get into CBS
(damn smart) you don’t have to fear
exams at all. You’ve done it before
and are more than capable of nailing
that fearsome exam! Moreover, we
can’t stress enough that exams aren’t
everything! Five years from now
(maybe a little longer) when you graduate from CBS, you won’t look down
at your diploma and cry your eyes out
for not getting a 12 (or even pass-
ing) in your first exam. As a matter
of fact, just receiving your bachelor
or master degree from CBS is a great
achievement in itself and will get you
a long way in your future career. The
biggest problem a lot of students face
during exam time is that they are
overly stressed, and therefore aren’t
prepared to be best of their abilities.
Once more, don’t stress – your fellow
students are here to help you.
Prepare specifically for what
you are facing
One of the most common mistakes
regarding exams is preparing by
reading the curriculum and provided
material, but NOT preparing for the
actual exam. We all have different
study techniques, and we have vastly
different things on our curricula, but
a common thing at CBS is that there
is a formalized set of different examinations that you can face.
This means that if you are preparing
for an oral exam, then you shouldn’t
spend all of your time only reading
the curriculum. You need to actually
practice talking about it with other

If you without luck have posted the following update on Facebook: ”Hey friends
I need a place to stay”, you can look for an apartment or a room on e-campus.
Use your CBS username and password to log on to e-campus.dk, click at CyberCampus and afterwards at buy, sell & rent. As well as apartment announcements you can also find second hand books and other things CBS students are
selling. Otherwise look for the paper adds students post on the various notice
boards in the halls of CBS.

Excuse me - do you offer a students discount?
Several places in Copenhagen offer a students discount. Besides the public
transport, you can also ask for discount at hairdressers, the dentist, in stores
ect. So remember to ask for a students discount! So remember to bring your
student ID and ask for students discount!
A haircut please
At the school for hairstylists you can get a haircut, get your eyebrows fixed and
your eyelashes coloured. Students from the school of hairstylists carry out the
treatments so you need to be in good time and trust the students when sitting
in the chair. But there is money to be saved, women pay 99 DKK for a haircut and
men pay 49 DKK. Opening hours are from Monday to Friday from 9.00 to 15.00.
All treatments are performed under the supervision of a teacher.

Bake and freeze
Speaking of low budget gastronomy, bread is actually one of the things that are
quite expensive! Bake your own bread and save money. At the price of 10 DKK
you can easily bake two breads – including electricity costs for the oven. Put
one of the loaves in the freezer so it doesn’t become stale. Do the same when
you cook a lasagne, prepare a large portion and put the leftovers in the freezer.
In the end it’s like fast food, only cheaper and healthier.

Coupons for those who want to go out
Perhaps you already know the coupon sites; www.downtown.dk and www.
sweetdeal.dk. If not these are websites that offers a discount on everything
from restaurants and wellness to outdoor activities. To get an overview of the
‘discount jungle’, three guys from CBS have started a website that brings all
these discount voucher pages together in one. The webpage is called www.
bownty.com. The webpage is in English and it’s free to register as a user. Furthermore another two guys from CBS have started a coupon page for drinks,
register at www.drinkster.dk and receive discounts when you go out.
Arrange a fashion party with your friends
Second-hand clothes are not only hip but also cheep. In Copenhagen you will
find lots of second hand stores, such as Røde Kors and København K (on Studiestræde). If you don’t like the smell in second hand shops arrange a ‘fashion
party’ with your friends, where you swap clothes. It is certain that your girlfriends have some clothes that they’ve never worn nor ever will.
OUCH my tooth!
Though most dentists offer a students discount, going to the dentist is still very
expensive. At the school of dentistry you can get your teeth fixed, almost for
free. The only things you need to pay for are the materials. To get treated you
need to show up personally in reception 3, Monday to Friday from 8.00 to 9:00
am. After a short examination you will get an appointment for treatment.

Start your own ’dinner-club’
As in the Danish TV programme ’4 Stjernes Middag’ (Dinner for four) you and
your fellow students can arrange a dinner-club. The food doesn’t have to be as
fancy as on TV. On www.studentermad.dk you can find easy and inexpensive
meals. It is always nice get an invitation for dinner, and there is money to be
saved when cooking together.
Guide to Copenhagen

happening, where to hang out and what to see – we’ll help you. With a few
taps on the computer or Smartphone you can easily find your way to the
latest fashion stores, cheapest restaurants and cultural events.
See: www.visitcopenhagen.com (English and Danish), www.ibyen.dk,

And remember, the best way to get to know the city, is to experience it the
Copenhagen way. Jump on a bike and explore Copenhagen – it’s free.
