So Long Frank!

For 38 years Frank Klemic has been the
face of the Sound Department. The Sound
Department not only rents equipment to the
production companies shooting on the lot,
but also delivers, installs, and maintains that
equipment on the stages. Frank’s primary
job was to make sure that the production
companies and their crews were always
taken care of, and he did that job extremely
well. In fact, Frank’s ability to stop someone
from what they were doing, and get him or
her to help him with whatever he needed
to accomplish was both a mystery and asset
for the department. Yet despite his pushy
nature, most people still actually liked him!
Growing up in a large family, Frank said
he had to be aggressive and speak loudly
if he wanted to get his parents or siblings
attention. I guess that explains a few things.
And his corny compliments to ladies are
legendary, as is his old VW Bug.
quirks to get the job done. We will definitely
feel the loss of Frank’s unique talents,
but we wish him the very best for a happy
retirement, and hope that his wife Pixie has
lots of “Honey Do Lists” waiting for him.

FOOT IN THE DOOR, FUTURE AT HAND!

Nine months ago I was a college senior
in Virginia Beach with a dream to move
across the country and pursue a career in
the entertainment industry. I didn’t know
anyone in LA to help me, so when I started
researching studios on the internet and came
across Mr. Michael Klausman’s office number,
I decided to call him. Sitting in my college
dorm room, I listened to him tell me his story;
how he started off as an usher and ended up
the President of CBS Studio Center. I was
inspired and ready to begin my own journey,
and he was gracious enough to open the first
door by giving me the opportunity to intern at
CBS Studio Center.
Motivated by that phone conversation, I
moved straight to LA. I was by myself and
flew out only two days after graduating. I
got an apartment with babysitting money I
had saved up though college and promised
myself I was never turning back, as I screwed
California license plates onto my car. I
had no idea what to expect on my first day
interning, but quickly discovered that being
in the Operations Department was a great
way to meet people on the lot. My LA address
book was pretty thin, so when production
coordinators started calling in with work
orders, I took the opportunity to make a new
friend. Just like Mr. Klausman, they had stories
to share of dedication and persistence and I
noticed they all had started off like me in
some way. I was inspired as my perception of
the daunting entertainment industry melded
into a community of caring and hardworking
people who were willing to share their wisdom
with me and give me an opportunity. Soon,
productions started calling me in to work for a
day or a few weeks at a time, from the TV Land
hits Hot in Cleveland and The Soul Man to CBS’
The Talk and Big Brother. I enjoyed seizing each

P.A. Hope Ammen on the set of The Talk
new task as an exciting experience, whether it
was getting hot dogs for Betty White or getting
covered in BBQ sauce while cleaning up game
competitions in Big Brother’s back yard. Each
show provided a plethora of new people to
connect with and learn from, and I am so
thankful for the people that stopped to share
with me part of their story, whether while I
was writing cue cards backstage at The Talk or
making runs on a golf cart.
Two months later, my address book is
growing, and CBS Radford has provided me
with the support and perspective for dreams
that before seemed so out of reach. With my
internship now at a close, I am happy to say
I have been hired as a production assistant
for ABC’s new show, Super Fun Night, and am
excited to enter this next chapter. My new life
in LA has just begun and I could not thank
CBS Studio Center enough for providing
the community of support I needed to begin
this journey. You all have taught me that
a career in entertainment thrives best in
community, and that while “the business” is
tough and unconventional, you gain family
and camaraderie that trumps any uncertainty.
