Hi Sir/Madam, I could not find the video on the presentation of diplomas (Graduation 2003 Session 2) on the SP website. As I recall my Poly days with fondness, I would like to save a copy of that for remembrance. Could you kindly help me achieve this task? Many Thanks! Best Regards. Poh Kia Huat Dear Kia Huat Greetings from SP Alumni Office! The video presentations could have been archived. Nevertheless, you can contact the Examinations Office at examinations @sp.edu.sg for assistance. of SP. You might want to join the SP Graduates’ Guild which is a registered and independent recreational club with bowling alleys, swimming pool and restaurants. Please give us your full name so that we can input your email address into our database and keep in touch with you. . Dear Madam My name is Hadiman Rusli, a graduate from the School of Business in 2003 (Diploma in Marketing). I have two questions that I would like to find out. First, I did not attend the graduation ceremony nor did I collect my Diploma cert. upon graduation because I had to rush to Sydney for my degree course. Right now, I have just finished my degree course and would be back in Singapore after the ceremony, which is around mid-October. So how do I collect my Diploma Cert? Second, a month before my Diploma graduation, I received a letter from ICA indicating that I was eligible to apply for PR status upon getting a full-time job. But that letter was dated somewhere around 2003 and it was valid for one year only from the date of issue. Is there a way to get that letter renewed? It would be difficult to get my PR approved without that letter. I have to serve the three-year bond upon signing the tuition grant but without PR status it could be very difficult to get a job. Looking forward to your reply. Hadiman Rusli I have just graduated from SP in 2005. May I know how I should go about to become an SP alumnus? Edwin Dear Hadiman About the collection of your diploma,, please contact the Exams Office via [email protected]. As to your PR application, please refer to the officer-in-charge, Ms Michelle Neo via [email protected]. . Dear Edwin Good news, there is no need to register as alumni. Institutional Medalists from Graduation 2005 For 50 years, Singapore Polytechnic has produced exemplary graduates who have excelled in work and in life. Among the 5,266 graduates who walked out of the Singapore Polytechnic Convention Centre during the 45th Graduation Ceremony in July this year, five graduates stood out with their stories of excellence. Lee Kuan Yew Award Winner gets Inspiration from Grandmother Y You can almost call her a bad girl made good. Before joining Singapore Polytechnic, Dian Farziana Binte Mohd Farid mixed with bad company. Her grades suffered and she failed all her subjects while she was still in a Junior College. Unhappy with her life in JC, she made up her mind to quit and join SP. Dian then decided to work hard and change. The former student from Commonwealth Secondary School had a strong interest in her diploma course in Medical Technology. She particular enjoyed the hands-on experience in the laboratories. Her late grandmother, you see, used to bring her to the hospital where she was a nurse when Dian was younger. A successful nurse and mentor, her grandmother was Dian’s source of inspiration. Perhaps her grandmother’s influence did help. Dian topped her course with 27 distinctions and 11 A’s. 2 It’s an amazing turnaround and for her determination, Dian was presented with the Lee Kuan Yew Award, the ABBOTT Diagnostics Awards, the Shell Companies in Singapore Prize, the OCBC Prize, the All Eights Award, the Health Sciences Authority Award and the Biomed Diagnostics Gold Medal. Dian also won the prestigious Education Public Service Commission (PSC) Merit Scholarship with the Ministry of Education. A Dve r t i s e m e n t S Pe c i a l m e n t i o n Toh Chin Chye Gold Medallist Triumphs over Illness I In 1998, an untimely illness, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, left Han Zhihang bedridden and, in and out of hospital, for over eight months. Zhihang, a former Chung Cheng High School (Main) student, stopped going to school for a year then. Worse, the untimely illness left him with severe pains in his joints and rendered him on permanent medication. His spirit could have been broken by such an unfortunate incident, but Zhihang chose to live a fruitful life. When he restarted school, Zhihang doubled his efforts for his studies. He topped his diploma course in Computer & Networ k Technology, scoring 26 academic distinctions and 9 A’s. Zhihang’s condition also did not stop him from being involved in many leadership positions, including chairing the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering PC Advisory Centre. He also took part in Generation Y Leadership Training Camp on board the Superstar Virgo, an unforgettable experience that helped hone his leadership qualities. For his outstanding achievements, Zhihang received the Toh Chin Chye Gold Medal, the Shell Companies in Singapore Prize, the Cisco Systems Gold Medal and the Shell Merit Award. Zhihang will pursue a degree at NTU in Computer Engineering after his National Service. Chua Chor Teck Gold Medallist Loves Mum’s Desserts P 4 Pua Yong Xiang has a sweet dream. He hopes to one day emulate successful local entrepreneurs and bring his mother’s secret recipe for desserts to great success. It is easy to see success in his eyes. It was through his immense passion that saw Yong Xiang topping his diploma course in Electronics, Computer and Communication Engineering, with 17 distinctions and 13 A’s. A former River Valley High School student, he firmly believes in balance for success – he indulges in an hour of video gaming everyday to keep stress in check. He is also very grateful to his family and hopes to help take the burden off his father who works long hours in a ship repair firm. For his excellence, Yong Xiang has been awarded with the Chua Chor Teck Gold medal, the Infineon Technologies Academic Excellence Award, the Motorola Prize, the Agere Systems Gold Medal and The Institution of Engineers, Singapore Prize. After he completes his National Service, Yong Xiang will pursue a degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering under a scholarship by NTU. But that was not always so. When he was young, Chia Ming was sickly and had more medicine than sweets. Because of his poor health, Chia Ming believes that he has to seize every opportunity to live life to the fullest. Thus he chose to leave the comforts of his home in Malaysia to study at SP. During his stay in SP, Chia Ming has gone to different countries, including a trip to China, where his team helped to increase AIDS awareness among youths in the Yunnan province. Chia Ming topped his Diploma course in Business Information Technology, scoring 25 distinctions and A’s. Chia Ming is about to embark on his next adventure. He has been offered a scholarship by the University of New South Wales to study in Australia. Apart from the scholarship, Chia Ming’s drive has won him the Low Guan Onn Gold Medal, the Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry Prize, the Shell Companies in Singapore Prize , the Har tford Institute of Management Award, the Asiainstitut of Management Scholastic Prize and the IDA Gold Medal. Tay Eng Soon Gold Winner Learns from Failure W When she was younger, Germain Goh Hui Mei was playful and not bothered about her results in school. She ended up in the Normal Technical stream when she was in Fairfield Methodist School. The setback shook her out of her indifferent attitude and she started to study hard. Because of this change in attitude, Germain’s grades also made a dramatic turnaround. She topped Fairfield Methodist Secondary School’s GCE ‘N’ Levels (Technical) exams, took a course in Architecture at ITE Balestier and then a Diploma course in Architectural Technology in SP. 6 Looking for Jobs? Germain continued to excel, clinching the top spot in her course in the first year, and went on to score 12 distinctions and A’s. She credits her good results to her lecturers who were friendly and inspiring. Fuelled by her passion in architecture, Ger main dreams of having the opportunity to design iconic building for the Singapore skyline. Her passion and drive has won her the prestigious Tay Eng Soon Gold Medal. Germain has also been awarded the Singapore Institute of Architects Prize and the OCBC Prize. - Aaron Chong, CCOM Good news, you can now find jobs via the new online Singapore Polytechnic Career Portal jointly provided by Singapore Polytechnic and our partner, JobsFactory Pte Ltd. Kelly Poon was working as an air stewardess after graduating with a Dip. in Maritime Transportation Management last year; Silver Ang was waiting to receive her Optometry diploma and had found a job with Spectacle Hut; Chanel Pang was a final-year student waiting to complete her Diploma course in Business Information Technology. But how their lives have changed! Many SP students are proud to have seniors like Kelly, Silver and Chanel. In fact, many are part of the fan clubs of the trio. During the recording session, the SP Students Union (SPSU) gathered supporters, clad in red and armed with banners, to show their adulation. Just before the Female Finals, a group of feisty students even went around Clementi distributing flyers in an attempt to rally support for Kelly. It was in SP when Kelly made her first foray into singing. She did not win but the failure spurred her on and she took part in other singing and song writing competitions organised by other tertiary institutions. “ It’s good to be back and thank you for all your support “ SP Superstars: After landing among the final 24 out of a pool of more than 4000 in Project Super star - a Mandarin singing competition organised by Channel U, MediaCorp TV - they are now household names with paths vastly different from what they had envisioned just a few months back. Kelly, the female winner, will be cutting an album with Universal Music while Silver and Chanel will be taking on several hosting engagements with MediaCorp TV. Many in SP have been impressed by their talents. In fact, when Kelly returned to her alma mater on 22 Aug, an overwhelming crowd of almost 700 students cramped the foyer beside Food Court Five to catch a glimpse of this talented SP alumnus. Kelly “It’s good to be back and thank you for all your support,” exclaimed Kelly, who crooned her famous tune to thank her juniors who turned up to show support. 7 Chanel S Pe c i a l m e n t i o n Chanel Pang is a multi-talented lass. Apart from winning a total of three singing competitions in SP, Chanel is also the captain of the SP female badminton team and has won various sports awards in SP. Lecturers and fellow classmates from her ICT course certainly see her as a role model. For pretty and dimpled Silver Ang, her supporters have been the most fervent at the studios. She is no stranger to the performing arts. An avid dancer, she was also the runner-up for this year’s Mr and Miss Singapore Polytechnic Pageant held in February, besides being very active in the Students Union as part of the Executive Committee. She also won an Excellence in Service award in 2003 for her contributions with SPSU. While the conclusion of the series on 1 September may have marked the end of a roller-coaster journey for these three young girls from SP, their voices have left an indelible mark in the hearts of many. We are proud of them and we wish them all the best. - Aaron Chong, CCOM 8 Silver Upgraded SP Sports Complex Lays out the Carpet Grass T There was a flurry of activities at the newly upgraded Singapore Polytechnic Sports Complex on 23 Aug. From SP students and staff who took to the field to perform the Great Singapore Workout to an entertaining football game between former National team players and a team made up of SP staff, students and alumni, it was a field day for some 800 staff and students who took part in the SP Healthy Lifestyle Day held in conjunction with the opening of the upgraded SP Sports Complex. Other sporting activities included a series of track events and various game tryout stations where staff and students were able to experience games such as floorball and rock climbing. The upgraded Singapore Polytechnic Sports Complex, officially launched by Member-of-Parliament and Mayor, Dr Amy Khor, was fir st built in 1991. It has now received a Class II Cer tification from the International Association of Athletics Federation, making it a recognised venue for international track events. Mayor Dr Amy Khor with SP Management The football field has also been re-leveled and re-turfed. Apart from the sports complex, new sporting facilities such as the new bouldering wall, the beach volleyball court and the new poolside gym were also launched officially. - adapted from eSPIN, SP’s staff portal S PA N Get Involved, Join SPIMA Network with your past fellow DIM/CIM classmates to enhance your current lifestyles and future aspirations! Tea flowed freely, questions from the Juniors flew fast and furious and tips from the Seniors met with appreciative nods. 10 About 60 alumni (mainly from Chemical Engineering, Polymer or Industrial Chemistry option) who are currently studying in NUS or NTU attended this session. They found it fruitful as they were able to revisit the SP campus, renew ties with old friends, mingle around and network with their seniors as well as receive “survival” tips from them. The seniors were those who were graduating or had just graduated from NUS and NTU. Four of them were invited to share - Tan Jian Sheng (Chem. Eng. 4th Year, NUS), Wong Chee Ping (2005 Graduate from Chemistry, NUS), Ng Jiawei & Poh Leong Soon (Env. Eng. 3rd Year, NTU), and Tai Chee Keong (2005 Graduate from Mat. Eng., NTU) They shared on time management, tough modules to watch out for, electives that could help in overall performance and how to get a meaningful hostel life at the universities. The lecturers from the School of Chemical & Life Sciences who were there, exhorted the whole group to be involved in the School’s Food & Fun Fair to be held on 17 Dec 2005. After all, about five stalls would be allocated to the CLS alumni! - Ho Thiam Aik, CLS S Po t li g h t FOOTPRINTS Leaving a mark in the life of others, treading a path few others have trod Overseas community service in rural villages has always been perceived as dirty, tough and unglamorous. But for those who have been there, these are but a small price to pay for the life altering experiences, the appreciation of things that are taken for granted and the immense satisfaction of knowing that you have made a difference in someone’s life. There is also the chance of exploring local sights that are well off the beaten track. SPAN News caught up with Fione Lai Yoke Foong (DBA ’02) and Colin Choo Ying Hui (DAT ’99) about their experiences. Fione is a veteran of four underground water tanks/improved ventilated toilet projects to Dongxiang in China’s Gansu province while Colin volunteered his services in Xiang Bi, located in western Yunnan. Four Times to Arid Dongxiang F Fione first went to Dongxiang in 2001 when it was still a closed area and special approval had to be sought from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is a dry, arid and mountainous region populated by the Muslim Dongxiang minority group with their own distinct language and culture. Fione & her fans in Dongxiang! difficult. “But the sense of warmth and appreciation coming from the villagers needed no verbal expression.” They were the first Singaporeans the villagers had seen and were treated like honoured guests. Fione found herself admiring their ability to survive in such harsh conditions and felt that there was really a lot that could be learnt from them. They always shared what little they had and despite the students’ protests, often served them with tea. Water was a very precious commodity to them and recycling the tea leaves from the students’ cups for their own use was a normal thing to do. Fione says, “We often give out of excess but what I received there was given out of what they needed to sustain themselves.” Fione was struck by the arid landscape too. “The desolate and barren landscape around Dongxiang was painted in different shades of brown with only a few patches of green. Standing at the mountain top, you would either be greeted by the howling wind or the piercing silence. You could either find a cer tain beauty and peacefulness about it or be driven to despair. Most of She and her group of SP students built underground water storage tanks for the Ma Kuang village as rain only fell between June to August. Though slight of build and standing at only 1.53m, Fione more than pulled her own weight, mixing cement and laying concrete slabs alongside the guys. The work was very tiring as everything was done using manual tools and communication with the villagers was Dry arid Dongxiang 11 S Po t l i g h t all, it tells the story of man’s determination to make sure that he and his family would survive.” Through constant contact with the locals, Fione admits she has learnt to be humble and to appreciate the simple things in life. She says: “Sometimes we just take things for granted, forgetting that things like education, gender equality, water and electricity may not come naturally. I have also learnt that it is in giving that we can receive so much more.” The work was so fulfilling for her that she volunteered for another three similar projects to Dongxiang, paying entirely for the last two trips as she was no longer a student. Perfumed Waterfalls in Remote Yunnan U Unlike Fione, Colin only embarked on an overseas community service project after he left SP. The oppor tunity to combine doing community work with a trek around the remote parts of Yunnan was too good to miss. He was part of a team that set up a computer lab in Xiang Bi (Elephant’s Trunk) and taught the local students (mainly the Hans, and the Bai minority group) English and r udimentar y computer skills. “I never expected the intense bonding “ “ 12 I never expected the intense bonding with the local students nor the level of adulation they showered on us with the local students nor the level of adulation they showered on us” says Colin, “and it was humbling to know that I was a role model for them to emulate.” Colin was struck by their thirst for knowledge , adaptability and easy contentment. It was something that neither he nor his team-mates had seen in themselves. He came away with the feeling that the local students were luckier as they knew how to be happy and contented. “I am now deeply appreciative of what I have here and the things that I have taken for granted for so long. What my friends and I spent in a single coffee session is equivalent to their school fees for one semester. Given the chance, I would definitely go for such projects again. It has been a ver y fulfilling experience for me.” Besides the wonderful time Colin had with the local students at Xiang Bi, he also had the opportunity to embark on a backpacking adventure stretching from Lijiang to Zhong Dian, De Qin and beyond, with some team-mates after the project ended. Some seasoned local trekker s in Shangri-la had directed them to various sites off the beaten tourist track. They really immersed themselves in the local culture, went to off-beat places like Bai Shui Tai, watched a glorious sunrise at Fei Lai Si, and almost ‘died’ trekking up Yu Beng. But the stupendous view of the Mei Li snowy mountains from Yu Beng was worth every agonising step of the five-hour trek. Colin recalls:“The highlight was drenching ourselves in the Shen Pu waterfalls for its supposedly healing qualities. After that, we felt really refreshed and our clothes smelled like they had been washed in perfume!” - David Lee, SAA S Po t li g h t Thriving Under the Californian Sun Serial Software Entrepreneur - Keng Lim I In April 1995, Lim Keng Siang (DCE’87), or Keng Lim as he prefers to be called, founded Kiva Software – a pioneer in application servers. At Netscape, Keng held the position of SVP and General Manager of the Internet Application Platform & Web Hosting Products Division until 1999. While there, he drove a large part of the company’s core infrastructure software business and played a key role in transforming Netscape from a browser company into an infrastructure software company. In 1999, he founded Escalate and built the company into a leading multi -channel order management software company. Subsequently, GERS acquired Escalate in August 2004. How did Keng end up in the software technologies business after getting his Diploma in Civil Engineering? “It all started with fulfilling a dream,” said Keng; and he has never looked back. He was back in Singapore recently for the BlueSky Festival in July 05 as one of its keynote speakers. The Festival was organised by the Action Community for Entrepreneurship (ACE) of Spring Singapore, to celebrate and showcase the spirit of entrepreneurship. Keng took the opportunity to visit his alma mater. He even gave an impromptu speech and chatted with some 100 students and staff during the 55@SP talk on 15 July. 13 “ S Po t l i g h t Keng still remembers fondly his time in SP where he was fortunate to have access to advanced computer resources then. However, he added that the students today are more fortunate as the labs today are equipped with so many more state-of-the-art network equipment, computer systems, communication and production systems. In addition to his professional career, Keng has been very active in the community and with professional bodies in Silicon Valley. He frequently speaks at entrepreneurial and high-tech industry events to share his entrepreneurial experience and vision on the evolution of the Internet and software industry. Keng also works very closely with MIT and the venture community to provide business strategy advice to startups. Somehow we have not heard the last of this serial software entrepreneur. - AN SPGG’s Restaurant Dishes Out Distinctive Fare - a superb array of local and western delights - Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, The Restaurant is a hallmark of Singapore Polytechnic Graduates’ Guild. S Po t l i g h t Dr Paul Goh - the Man who Lives on Variety S Six years in the Air Force as a regular aircraft technician gave Paul Goh Fo Kim, 42, time out to ponder on his future. Two things became clear: he believed his life could count for more and it certainly needed more variety. Variety he now has. As Universitas 21 Global’s Director of Recruitment for ASEAN, he spends his time flying to other countries to organise recruitment talks and events; and to meet with local partners. Headhunted for the job when the online graduate school opened its doors two years ago, Paul’s brief is to reach out to ASEAN countries and increase the number of enrolments to 2,000 within the next year. He is certainly passionate about his job. He sees the merit of online learning for mid and senior management professionals who have too many family commitments or demanding travelling jobs that make full-time study too daunting. Online learning also lends itself well to upgrading and remaining relevant. In addition, Universitas 21 Global is jointly owned by 16 well-known universities across the globe together with Thomson Learning. Paul says, “We offer flexibility with high academic quality because 16 universities validate and ensure our quality.” He is quietly proud of Universitas 21 Global’s latest offering – MSc in Tourism and Travel Management from The University of Nottingham incorporating the Executive Diploma in Business Administration from Universitas 21 Global. He says: “With Integrated Resor ts coming onstream in Singapore, tourism is now sustainable and this course will show students how to strategise. Graduates will be well-poised to lead the 100,000 tourism professionals that will be needed by 2015 to bring the tourism industry here to a higher level.” To Paul Goh, his Poly days in the early 1980’s (DEE’83) were very enjoyable. Those were the days of comfortable flip-flops, computer games and serving as a committee member of Christian group, the Navigators. He gives credit to his Electrical Power lecturer Paul Hoole who was very patient and detailed in his explanations. He chuckles at the memory of an Indian lady lecturer who would grab the tail of her sari to clean the chalkboard. ruminative and reflective about his career and life aspirations. After the Air Force, he took up a Higher Diploma in Computer Studies and flew to the University of Staffordshire to get his BSc in Computer Studies. Impressed with his first class honours, a private educational institution gave him a scholarship to pursue his PhD. at the University of Salford. Back in Singapore, he tried his hand at teaching. Over time, Paul realised that just teaching alone would make him obsolete in this fast-changing business environment. So he left and for the next six years, worked in consulting firms that had e-government projects and assignments in the financial sector. The most satisfying aspect of his current job is the new challenges that he constantly faces. He deals with different levels of people in different countries, something that requires sensitive people management and deft communication skills. What makes him truly happy is when students tell him that they have made the right choice. That and the fact that this job gives him lots of variety. - PG Paul has remained focused and is still About Universitas 21 Global Universitas 21 Global is a world-class online graduate school, jointly-owned by 16 internationally-renowned universities like McGill and British Columbia in Canada, Birmingham and Glasgow in UK, New South Wales and Melbourne in Australia, Fudan and Hong Kong in China, and the National University of Singapore. A At 33, Ponz Goo has already won several awards like Enterprise 50, Entrepreneur of the Year and International Superbrands. Her business philosophies of superior and honest service are well-documented in the media and Haach is poised to expand in London, Shanghai and Delhi. Despite being the youngest in the family, she has shown great foresight and remarkable business mettle. At the point of writing this article, Ponz was overseas and consented to an email interview. As a youngster I always very much looked up to my father as a role model on how to conduct myself in a business arrangement. He always conducted himself with a great deal of integrity and taught me that hard work and integrity would pave the road to success. I was also taught the importance of understanding the conditions on the ground, forming my own opinion, not following the crowd and exploring new opportunities. On a more intimate and personal front, my mother was also a feminine role model for me. She is a very strong woman who taught me the value of always treating others with respect and compassion. 2) Why study construction in SP and RMIT? Any interesting experiences in SP and RMIT? It was not a matter of choosing to study construction. In fact, prior to joining SP, I had little interest in the area. However I saw it as an opportunity for further education and I grabbed it with both hands. I am also a believer in the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake – a well informed mind is always a productive mind that can turn opportunities to successes. My days at Singapore Poly were cer tainly enlightening and fun. My lecturers were all very engaging, and made efforts to connect with each of us. They demonstrated an honest 1) The kind of childhood you had and your family’s influence I had a very typical childhood, going to a church kindergarten and then a neighbourhood primary school. As the youngest in a family of five, I was very much the baby of the family, and was very well taken care of. My family is very traditional ChineseConfucionist, which means that respect for each other’s opinions, and family values played a very large part in my upbringing. I would say that I was very lucky as my parents always taught me 20 Receiving the Entrepreneur of the Year award from Mr Raymond Lim, Minister of State,Trade & Industry S Po t l i g h t day or work week, making the job so much fun and so challenging. The only constant is the long hours that I work. In some weeks it is internal meetings with staff and partners, in others it is meetings with suppliers and investors, not forgetting brainstorming for new products and services, testing, market research, service reviews and the many other myriad of activities; no two days are ever alike! Ponz, the dutiful guest-of-honour at the River Valley Primary School P5 Sales Bazaar care-and-concern attitude towards our well-being and ensured that we understood all the course contents. The most interesting thing for me while I was at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology was having to take care of myself - preparing my own meals and doing my own laundry – because in our household all of these things were taken care of. I think doing that taught me a great deal about self reliance and confidence. Today, my training in the construction industry has been a great assistance in the planning, layout and construction of all Haach’s new developments. I have been able to co-ordinate all of the disparate suppliers and turn the décor of HAACH into one of our differentiating factors. Little did I imagine that I would be applying what I learnt in construction to the business of lifestyle wellness. family working together. With many disparate interests and areas of expertise, it seemed that the spa industry would present a great opportunity. Also it was an area that the government had identified as having great potential for growth and a future centre of excellence for Singapore. That really gave us the added impetus. We decided to establish our own identity in spa and wellness operations and I pursued a Cidesco diploma to become more informed about the industry. Little did we imagine then how quickly we would grow and carve our own niche in the industry. 4) What’s your typical day like, a typical work week? On top of all the “work” activities there are also the charity and community activities that I am involved in. These could see me rehearsing in the evenings for a Chinese Women’s Association performance. 5) You are the youngest, yet you are the CEO. At 33 that is a big achievement. Any advice to other alumni? I am not sure if it is a big achievement or not. I have just followed my beliefs and dreams and worked very hard. The only thing I would like to share with the alumni would be that they should dare to dream, but dream with a purpose and plan how you are going to put your dreams into action. Each and every one of us dreams, but what separates a dreamer from an entrepreneur is the willingness to work hard and plan how they are going to put their dreams into action. - PG There really isn’t a typical working 3) What started you into the spa industry? These are the qualities that saw Jeanie Tan Cheng Cheng (DBA ’94) bag a series of national rock climbing championships from 1997 – 1999 and representing Singapore in the international rock climbing arena. These are also the qualities that she honed as a student leader with the SP Rover Scouts. Today, these same qualities are helping her to do the job of General Manager of South West Community Development Council (South West CDC). Jeanie readily admits that her active involvement in CCA, especially with the Rovers, has contributed greatly to her leadership and organising skills. Being part of a uniformed group also helped to instil a sense of discipline and mental toughness in her, so too the opportunities to network with both external and overseas groups for major scouting events like the Jamboree. Her ardour for rock climbing drove her to gather fellow enthusiasts to form the SP Rock Climbing Club and serve as its trainer for new devotees to the rock-climbing craze sweeping Singapore at that time. She and her fellow rockclimbers practically built the first rock wall in SP. “We had to drill the rock climbing tiles into the wall ourselves to save cost as the $5,000 budget given was not enough for both equipment and construction costs”. Jeanie’s passion for the Rovers has remain unabated – not only does she keep in touch with her fellow Rovers more than with her classmates, she is constantly being invited back for important Rovers activities by the current students. The can-do and hands-on attitude from her student days has since become a hallmark in her working career with People’s Association as a Youth Officer in 1996, as Deputy Head and as Assistant Director for its Youth Division 22 in 1999 and 2002 respectively. Her current job is quite a handful, mind you. The South West CDC is the biggest CDC covering about a third of Singapore’s land area and includes Hong Kah, Jurong and West Coast Group Represented Constituencies; as well as the single constituencies of Ayer Rajah, Chua Chu Kang and Bukit Timah. It has about 252,000 households with about 700,000 residents. Jeanie enjoys tremendously the work that she is currently doing as she has always been interested in community work. Being with the CDC allows her to be involved with community bonding efforts at both the micro and macro levels. She is able to administer financial aid schemes delegated by MCYS or job matching services by MOM while helping to formulate programmes that would allow others to extend that helping hand. She has great admiration for volunteers as “they give unstintingly of their time and energy. I am quite proud to be an SP alumnus as SP takes an active lead in our community programmes, like A D ve r t i s e m e n t Whether as a student or at work, Jeanie has never lost sight of her philosophy: “Be sincere and treat everyone with respect.” She fervently believes that no matter who or where you are, sincerity and respect are the cornerstones on which good rapport and harmonious relationships are built. This is especially important for her as interacting with people from all levels is an integral part of her work. - David Lee, SAA “ Be sincere and treat everyone with respect. “ the running of the Clementi Students’ Service Centre in Clementi Ave 5. Department of Student & Alumni Affairs Singapore Polytechnic 27 S P j o b n ew s Electronic Job Hunting I In 2002, 91% of the Global 500 used corporate Web sites for recruiting vs. 79% in 2000. As shown in the survey results, there has been a shift in recruitment methods. More companies are using the Internet for their recruitment purposes, as it is an efficient, time-saving and cost-saving alternative to traditional methods of recruitment. are convenience, flexibility and cost efficiency. In addition, the Internet may be an excellent tool to do a lot of good research and save quite a bit of networking time by providing great information. However, it does not provide the benefits of per sonal contact and valuable perspectives that one-on-one information-gathering interviews provide. Jobseekers should use the Internet as one of the sources of information for job leads. Benefits of using the Internet There are two main ways companies use the web for their online recruitment. The first is by advertising their openings on their own corporate website in the career section. The other is through posting their jobs online on a job portal. Jobseekers are then instructed to submit their resume via email or to apply online by filling out application forms. Application forms are usually standardized and self-explanator y. Emails however can make or break your candidacy. Many individuals have become too relaxed or informal when communicating online. The lax approach can spill over into professional correspondence. Here are tips for jobseekers using email to apply for positions: • Simpler is better with e-mailed resumes. • Recruiters receive hundreds of resumes titled “resume”, so it would help if you add your name to the document name. • Include a proper cover letter; use it to describe your qualifications, motivation, and interest in the job so that the employer will want to interview you. Do not write “cover letters” that only contain 2 lines – “I am interested in this job. Please see my resume attached.” • Do not use wacky e-mail addresses such as [email protected] or [email protected] as it could give a recruiter the impression that you aren’t serious about your career • Eliminate use of emoticons such as smiley faces or frowns • Use spell-checkers and grammar checkers, grave grammatical or spelling mistakes are not tolerated • Use well-known formats like Microsoft Word so files can be easily opened on the receiving end • Scan your computer and files for viruses. Sending viruses unintentionally will result in recruiters discarding your resume with out reviewing them • Write subject lines that are concise and clearly label the contents of the message • If you are responding to a message, either include the relevant part of the original message in your own or make your reference to its contents very explicit • Do not apply for jobs without meeting the minimum qualifications • Follow-up in a timely manner, just as you would with traditional communication. This is usually the first test of your credibility and trustworthiness As the resources available online are plentiful, do allocate time to visit the Website of the company you are applying to or interviewing with. Lack of information in the information age is inexcusable, because it is so easy to find out basic information about a company. 28 With more companies using online recruitment, the use of technology has become an essential tool in a successful job search and the goal is to win a faceto-face meeting with an employer.
