April Bash Bulletin
Variety - the Children’s Charity A: 47 Herbert Street Artarmon NSW 2064 Stuart Telfer – P: (02) 9819 1009 F: (02) 9437 3588 M: 0425 277 673 E: [email protected] W: www.variety.org.au/nsw/BASH Hello everyone and welcome to the April edition of the Bash Bulletin for 2016! We’ve just returned from our successful Variety 4WD Adventure which finished on Fraser Island the weekend before last. Everything went well and we had several ‘Virgin’ teams who all seemed to enjoy themselves and I think we converted a couple of them to the ‘Family’ and they’ll be back with us next year. Pictured is Sharon White and Christine’s Scott’s entry, car 24, driving along the eastern beach on Fraser Island. Car 24 was our Highest Fundraising Team winner. More details further into the Bulletin. I would like to thank Les Smith and TEAM TOSHIBA for printing our 4WD appreciation certificates for us again this year. Cheers Les, most appreciated. BRYDENS SPECIAL OFFERS Don’t forget our Naming Rights Sponsor, Brydens Lawyers, are your go to law firm to help you in anyway with your legal issues. And here’s a special offer for you to take advantage of. For more Brydens Lawyers news click this http://brydens.com.au. 2 A LOVELY EMAIL We received an email from the Principal of Urbenville Public School, Lauren Hankinson, before we went on the 4WD Adventure then one after we had visited the school. I’m reproducing parts of the two emails to let you know how much of a difference you all make (Bashers/Adventurers) when we visit schools. Have a read to the prior first; Hi Stuart, Thank you again for bringing such an incredible event to our school and town and for your tremendous donations. It is the absolute highlight of our school calendar this year. Thank you. See you next week! Then after we visited; Dear Stuart, There are just no words. Thank you so very much. Your visit was just all so quick but the impact it has had and the memories created...priceless. I'm going to be loading photos up on our Instagram page www.instagram.com/urbenvilleps and tagging Variety Australia so they can also see the tremendous day we have just had but also your team of warm, enthusiastic and kind drivers may like to take a look too. Life in Urbenville is pretty tough and although we don't seem very far from it all, it is very isolated and removed from the rest of the world. We had students today that truly would never have seen 50 people in one place before and the best meal some of them will have had all week...month...year (parents and kids!). Enjoy the rest of your week. You have just blown me away with what you have given to my little school. I just can't thank you enough. On a personal note, Variety Australia will now have my support for the rest of my life knowing firsthand what you do and the lives you change for the better. I hope one day, my partner and I may be able to join you all for a week trip somewhere helping kids that certainly never asked for the life they have been born into. Kind regards, Lauren Hankinson Principal Urbenville Public School There you go everyone, feel good about yourselves and the work you do for Variety so we can do these types of visits and presentations to the schools we visit on our events. FUNDRAISING POSTER 3 Our marketing team have come up with a great little “tool” to help you with your fundraising activities. A lot of you raise money from BBQs to Bus trips and we now can offer you a poster to tell everyone who you are and what you are fundraising for. The poster comes with the classic four wide, Bash car photo together with two recipients Variety has helped along with a blank spot to put the event you are working at and a spot for your car number. You’ll be able to print these yourselves or we can help out here by doing them in A3 size. This is just one of the tools the Variety Team are working on for you to help with your fundraising. You can see the poster by clicking HERE (on the electronic version or by putting www.??????????????? Into your web browser. WHAT’S THAT BASHER UP TO? We’re introducing a new section to the BB to highlight some of the great fundraising our Bashers are doing and to give you some inspiration for your fundraising ideas. Here’s our first story! We’re thrilled to have cousins Geoff and Robert from Car K9 back on the Bash again this year. Without a major sponsor they’ve struggled to reach their fundraising target some years but they never give up! They jump onto any fundraising opportunity which pops up, including heading down to the Summernats car festival earlier on this year, and shaking buckets at Woolies stores during the Fresh Community Fairs. Thanks to their support of these events they’re just over halfway towards their fundraising target. Keep up the great work guys! Here they are pictured at a Woolies lamington drive with helpers and Woolworth staff. Well done boys! For anyone interested in being a part of the next Woolworths Fresh Community Fair to raise some extra $$, please email Catherine at [email protected] Do you have a fundraiser or any activities that you’ve done or that are coming up which we can share? Send me some details and we’ll share your story in ‘What’s that Basher up to?’ BASH ‘DAY’ SPONSORS Here’s a great opportunity to get your organisation or brand in front of a passionate and loyal Variety Bash Community during the event. A one day sponsorship opportunity. What’s included in the sponsorship? Opportunity to place signage at Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner stops on your sponsorship day. Opportunity to place signage at the Bash start line on your sponsorship day. Opportunity to speak to the Bash community during the Dinner. Logo recognition on Variety B to B Bash website as event sponsor. Logo recognition in Variety B to B Bash Bugle sponsor section. Plus a ½ Page advertisement in Variety B to B Bash Bugle Sponsor a day on the route to support the Variety B to B Bash and celebrate with over 110 Bash cars and 350 participants in raising over $2 million for Aussie kids in need in 2016. 4 This is your opportunity to be part of Australia’s most iconic and successful charity motoring event, the Variety B to B Bash. We have a flyer available for you at http://www.variety.org.au/PageFiles/3635/Variety%20B%20to%20B%20Bash%202016%20%201%20Day%20Sponsorships.pdf For more information or to secure a day sponsorship please contact Mili Simic on 0430 431 956 or email [email protected] BASH IDOL ENTRANTS We are going to make a decision, prior to the Bash, whether or not Bash Idol stays as part of the event. Last year we had only two entrants and it’s been suggested we should drop it I personally would be devastated without this event as I’ve been associated with it since 1998, when as an entrant, John Flower the then “Bash Director” rang me and asked me would I run Red Faces at an overnight spot, Kynuna, in Outback Queensland. Well who’ll ever forget it, it was a hoot? Penny Docherty entered the Variety Choir made up of anyone she picked out of the crowd. Who’ll ever forget the cattle dog trying to grab Penny’s ‘baton’ and she conducted the choir from ground level?!?!?! We’ve had some amazing performances over the years and probably many more bad ones too! One veteran Basher used to say to me, “I only come on the Bash each year to see if the acts could get any worse!” That used to hurt me!!!! Anyhow, does it stay or does it go? You will be the judge by entering or not. If we don’t have a minimum of six acts entered by Friday 5th August we’ll be dropping it. Just send me an email with your intention to [email protected] THEME DAYS/NIGHTS We’ve already told you that COLOUR DAY is TARTAN this year! That’s to go with our Scottish Theme Day on the Bash which is Day 2. from Armidale. This is how come! In 1839, George J. Macdonald, acting as the commissioner of crown lands in NSW, described the site he was standing in, now occupied by Macdonald Park in East Armidale, as 'an extensive, open plain, well-watered and sheltered and centrally situated.' Macdonald named the area after his clan's baronial estate of 'Armadale' in Scotland. And hence, why we will be having Scottish (Tartan) Day whilst there, starting at the school for breakfast! There will be two more announcements made at our Motoring Events Information Night (M.E.I.N.) this Wednesday night, so be there to find out! THE MOTORING EVENTS INFORMATION NIGHT (AKA M.E.I.N.) Our next M.E.I.N., is this Wednesday night, April 20th at the Gladesville RSL @ 4 Linsley Street, Gladesville starting from 6pm. These nights are held on the THIRD Wednesday of the month – in most cases. There are a few changes to that depending on certain circumstances. For Virgins it is a great opportunity to talk to Bashers and mechanics about building or maintaining a Bash car so make the effort to come along on these nights. We welcome Bashers, 4WD Adventurers, friends and interested newcomers from 6pm. 2016 BASH APPAREL ON DISPLAY 5 At this week’s M.E.I.N., we will also have the range of apparel on show from Actioncorp where you can try on various items for sizing purposes. Colin Farr from Actioncorp will be in attendance to help you with choices and personalised embroidery ideas you may have for your crew’s clothing. BASH CAR PHOTOS FOR THE BASH BUGLE I select most of the photos that go into the annual Bash Bugle, however, if you have a particular photo of your car you’d like used send it to me via email to stuart.telfer@#variety.org.au preferably in jpeg configuration. If you are a Virgin entry we require a picture of your Bash car, preferably with a pleasant background in a park or on a beach etc. Please do not take it outside your workshop with the garbage bins in the background!!! Do you grasp what I’m saying? Deadline for your photos is the 31st April. DOOR PANELS OK, those that entered and paid their minimum $500 deposits, have now had their door panels printed with their number on them. They will be available at this Wednesday’s M.E.I.N., or you can have them mailed out in a tube for $10. It will come with your window strip, two variety logos, two event logos and two Brydens Lawyers decals to be placed on your car. For those that didn’t enter at this stage, you can have all the above mailed out to you to with ‘blank’ door panels which are also now available. Ring Sally with your credit card details on (01) 9819 1016 and she’ll mail them out to you along with several Bash posters which are now available too! Intrastate entrants will have theirs mailed over the next week. ENTRY FORMS – CREW SHIRTS There are still many who haven’t filled out forms as yet. Many of you have money in but no forms!!! Anyhow, we shall be ordering our Bash shirts shortly and we need your forms filled out including the shirt sizes. Team Captains, please make sure your crews have filled out their forms for this purpose. We just love the bun fight each year over not getting the right size shirt – and yes – it’s usually those who didn’t provide the information!! Go figure….. IMPORTANT DATES Here are a few dates that you should have in your diaries; ChequePoint Day: Sunday 7th July at Heartland Motors, Castle Hill Official’s Briefing Day: Saturday 13th August at Artarmon Variety Office Final Office Day and Goodie Bag Pick up: Sunday 14th August at Variety Office Bash Start: Sunday 21st August at Berowra 6 FIRE EXTINGUISHERS Following the disaster of Bash 1, the Dodge Ram, catching on fire last year and being written off I want you to know if it can happen to a late model vehicle it can happen to an old car too! My fire extinguisher alone couldn’t put the fire out and with the help of a truckie and many Bashers with their extinguishers, John Williamson’s 20 litres of water and hand-fulls of dirt we put the fire out. So, at the ChequePoint this year we’ll be checking for both a FITTED extinguisher and 20 litres of water in your vehicles. Gang, it wasn’t a good day in my life and I don’t want anyone else to share the experience. STILLWELL TRUCKS CONTINUED SUPPORT Stillwell Trucks have been a great supporter of Variety in general and the Bash in particular with the Baggage Truck arrangements we have every year. They made their facility ‘open house’ for 20 years for Allan Doherty to bring his B Double up each year and leave on their premises while you guys filled it up with your gear. They also held a golf tournament where the proceeds came our way, once they paid the golf course the repair bill from my wayward hacks!!! So thank you Steve Shearer, Stillwell’s General Manager, for your continued support of Variety, it’s much appreciated and this $10,000 will go a long way to helping our special needs children we support. Steve also sent us a nice note, Hi Stuart, Great to see you again mate, please find the attached picture as promised. I'd appreciate it if you would please pass onto the many great people at Variety - the Children's Charity, how proud we are to contribute in a small way towards improving the quality of life for those children and their families who are less fortunate than most of us. Thanks again mate, look forward to catching up again soon. PS: if you haven't liked us on Facebook as yet, please do and I'd appreciate your Bashers liking our page as well. So here you go gang, please put into your Facebook search, Stillwell Trucks, and then ‘Like” their page. Your support would be much appreciated for doing this, cheers! 7 SALLY’S NOTE/REQUEST FOR AUCTION ITEMS FINAL NIGHT OF BASH As many of you know we conduct an Auction on the final night. We are in need of several high quality or unique Auction Items for the Final Night of the Bash, please note that this must be put forward to Stuart before the Bash and it is at Stuart’s discretion if the item meets our requirements and will be accepted! Please be aware that it must be an item we believe will be popular for the Bashers! Then - and only then - if accepted; You will be offered 50% of the real dollars raised to your cars donation tally for the 2017 Bash – please note this is over and above the required $8,500 which must be paid in REAL CASH. DO YOU NEED TYRES? A long time sponsor of Variety – the Children’s Charity is Tyreright who have been donating to us for years through the Planned Giving program of ours. This has led to Bash sponsorship and they look after my tyre requirements for Bash 1. Now you can imagine the kilometres we do in the command ship is pretty high and we tend to wear out our fair share of tyres. Marc Dayball, the National HR Chief at Tyreright, has been a wonderful supporter and I asked him to offer you guys a deal in preparation for this year’s Bash. Here’s his offer and unfortunate word selection of our association; Stuart As the time for the Variety Bash rolls around the team at Tyreright hit the skids pretty hard in anticipation of whatever trouble Telfer the Tyre Wrecker spins up for us this year. Will his vehicle catch fire again? Will the pressure leave him deflated and flat on the side of the road? Will he bounce back from whatever troubles the road throws up? All we know is that every year Telfer the Tyre Wrecker ensures that the Bash hits all the potholes and the Bashers hit all their fundraising targets. Tyreright is proud to be aligned with the Variety Bash and are thrilled to offer all Bashers 10% off any GT Radial tyres at any of our stores in NSW. Just bring this Bash Bulletin note into your nearest Tyreright store (listed below) to save. Travel safe, have heaps of fun and stay rubber side down! The cut off point for these is next Monday, the 21st March. So get that paperwork in guys and girls or you’ll be paying extra to buy your own numbers. GOODIE BAGS Sally Ross is really looking for products to include in our Bash ‘Goodie Bags’ if you have any contacts for products that might be useful, fun, yummy or interesting to include please let Sally know. Great promotion for their products. We generally request 400 (for one per person) or 150 (for one per car). All these are important items, don’t do any short cuts. Now, most importantly, these people are here to help you – they don’t have to do it – so be nice. At this stage they haven’t got any beds lined up at all so don’t make any demands. Anyone that steps out of line in this process will be cut loose and you can find your own beds. We are unable to produce a ‘Tax Invoice’ for a donation, but this form is the acceptable alternative for most companies. It’s simple for us to do and all we require is their details – such as contact name, company name, address and the amount. Call Sally Ross on 9819 1016 for further advice. See you there!!!! Ronnie Tee from car #181 has a night of musical variety on 11th June at Castle Hill RSL. Follow Ronnie on Facebook for more details The Mermaids have two wonderful events coming up and I really do urge you to support these events. 11 The First: Thursday 2nd June. Each year Beryl Driver and her Mermaids organise a day on Currawong which is the former Labor NSW holiday camp. I went for the first time last year and had a great day – yes it’s a day out! You’ll be transported by ferry from Palm Beach across Pittwater to Currawong and you swim back! Well that is, depending on how many raffle tickets you buy!!!!!! You’ll have a great lunch, walk around this historic site, take the clubs for a game of golf with the Peninsular Ladies or even a book to read, it’s just relaxing day in one of natures’ best kept secret locations! In fact some of those Peninsula Ladies think everyone should be blind folded so they can’t come back!!!!! Ha, ha…… The Second: Tuesday night 2nd August. This is Beryl’s signature event, her night out at the Palm Beach RSL. This is a good night out which Beryl has been trying to stop having for several years – BUT – the locals won’t let her stop them!!!! You’ll have dinner and drinks at club prices with a raffle and a few auctions as well. I enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of this night and watching the Main Mermaid in action as she “swims” around the room making everyone feel welcomed like she does. I don’t have all the details but I urge you to contact Beryl and make a booking for both or either of these fundraisers. Beryl is our oldest entrant and never stops thinking about the kids we support. I know it’s a bloody long way away but it’s for Beryl…….how could you not support her for once?!?!?! Get Beryl on 0410 478 897 and tell her Stuart told you to ring!!!!! SHUTE HARBOUR CAR PARKING For those travelling over to Hamilton Island, we have been successful in receiving wonderful help from the Whitsunday Regional council regarding parking. Council has approved for us to park at Shute Harbour and they will provide 24 hour security for the two days we are on the Island. That’s fantastic news – and – we much appreciate their assistance. Other options. Joe Cautela is organising with a Valet Parking service guy, a Queensland Basher we met on the first survey, other ways to park and ride. We are still organising the finer details and prices so keep an eye on this section. But here are some of the things we are looking at; Firstly, your provisions fee will include your charter cruise ship travel from Shute Harbour to Hamilton Island and back to Shute Harbour on Wednesday 31st. If you don’t travel back on the charter cruise you will have to pay your own way back from Hamilton Island, there is no discount on the regular cruise price. Joe is organising undercover car parking separate to Shute Harbour. This is with the Valet service. You will need to drop off your crew and baggage at the Shute Harbour terminal and, just the driver, take the car to the parking area – mid way between Shute Harbour and Airlie Beach. You will be taken back to the Shute Harbour terminal by bus. This last method allows you to stay longer on Hamilton Island but if you don’t return on the 31st, where you’ll be picked up at Shute Harbour by the Valet service, you will have to return 12 to the Airlie Beach terminal at your own expense. Joe is seeking expressions of interest on this Valet parking option to work in with the Queensland operator. Get Joe on 0412 448 007. Should you wish your car transported back to Sydney and fly direct out of Hamilton Island, Joe is organising that car transport component as well. You will need to take up the above option and leave your car in the lock up. From here your car will be picked up by the trucks for return to Sydney. Again get Joe on 0412 448 007. Remember, if you don’t travel on the charter cruise components of this section of the Bash your travel to and from Hamilton Island are at your expense. Watch this space for further refinements and pricing. Remember, the Bash Office does not organise the car transportation, Joe does this as a favour to you guys – so – remember that when he’s asking for details and or payments. He’s doing you a favour, you certainly aren’t doing him any favours!!!! JOKE OF THE MONTH – One of the Best Blonde jokes you'll read! Two sisters, one blonde and one brunette, inherit the family ranch. Unfortunately, after just a few years, they are in financial trouble. In order to keep the bank from repossessing the ranch, they need to purchase a bull so that they can breed their own stock. So it’s decided the brunette should take off and find a suitable bull Upon leaving, the brunette tells her sister, 'When I get there, if I decide to buy the bull, I'll contact you to drive out after me and haul it home.' The brunette arrives at the man's ranch, inspects the bull, and decides she wants to buy it. The man tells her that he will sell it for $599, no less. After paying him, she drives to the nearest town to send her sister a telegram to tell her the news. She walks into the telegraph office, and says, 'I want to send a telegram to my sister telling her that I've bought a bull for our ranch. I need her to hitch the trailer to our pickup truck and drive out here so we can haul it home.' The telegraph operator explains that he'll be glad to help her, then adds, it will cost 99c a word. Well, after paying for the bull, the brunette realises that she'll only be able to send her sister one word. After a few minutes of thinking, she nods and says, 'I want you to send her the word 'comfortable.' The operator shakes his head. 'How is she ever going to know that you want her to hitch the trailer to your pickup truck and drive out here to haul that bull back to your ranch if you send her just the word 'comfortable?' The brunette explains, 'My sister is blonde. The word is big. She'll read it very slowly…(next page) 'Com-for-da-bul.' 13 HAMILTON ISLAND ACCOMMODATION And don’t forget to book your accommodation on Hamilton Island as there is no camping or caravan parks there. Here is your contact for accommodation on Hamilton Island; Melissa Pollard, Groups Co-ordinator, T: 02 9433 0457 E: [email protected] LOGOS AND WORDING ON PRINTED ARTICLES Now that we are back in the fundraising season we thought we should re visit what you can and can’t say in your flyers/invitations and raffle tickets etc., as the fundraising season is also about to start for you! With Virgin Bashers signing on we need to let them know and remind you about the rules of using the Variety logos etc. You can use the Bash logo (as seen on the front page of the Bulletin) with your fundraising literature but you CANNOT use Variety’s logo with the Heart and Hat on its own. There are two versions of a combined Variety/Event Logo which we have developed for you (pictured) but you can’t split it. If you can’t get it right, we won’t be putting it up on our web site. These logos, plus the event logo on its own, are available from the Bash Office and should be used in all fundraising promotions and on all printing and advertising material (raffle tickets included). It is imperative that your car number is the main feature of the title. Then, and only then, should you mention that Variety is the beneficiary of your particular fundraising activity. Here are some examples you can use; CAR NO. 999 Raising funds for the Variety B to B Bash 2016 CAR NO. 999 Raising funds for Variety’s “children with special needs” through the Variety B to B Bash 2016 CAR NO. 999 … an entrant in the Variety B to B Bash 2016 CAR NO. 999 … an entrant in the Variety B to B 2016 Berowra to Bowen Bash If in any doubt about this please do not hesitate to contact me at the office as it’s extremely important we play to the rules of the land regarding charities. And please don’t change its shape either! We ask Car Captains or Team Leaders to double check their helpers that they are getting it right. Thank you. Send Sally an email and she’ll forward the logos to you, [email protected] 14 SERVICE CERTIFICATES If you are coming up to 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 years of Bashing this year, you need to let us know in the office.
