JUNE 2012 - QLD Corvette Club
JUNE 2012
You start squawking before the sun
shameless form of self-expression.
even rises. You steal our sesame
It’s rude and disrespectful. So to
seed buns and fries. But worst of
all you birds reading this: watch
all, you unload your lunch on our cars. No
your bony little backs. We’re hitting up the
sooner have we finished detailing than the
animal shelter. Gonna find us a cat. A mean
fruits of our labor are soured thanks to your
one with all its claws. Tell your friends.

Bryan Wharton sent me an email about statistics that are available on Corvette production. If you go on
the “Corvette Museum” website, you can access an immense amount of data. Production of Corvettes
peaked in 2007 with 40,561 cars produced .The decline in sales started the following year : 35310
Corvettes were made in 2008; 16956 in 2009 ; 12194 in 2010 ; 2011 sales jumped a bit to 13596 , but
this year , so far , only 11647 Corvettes were made. The choice of options are simply amazing .Peter will
be pleased to know that RED Corvettes just beat black cars in this years’ sales.
JUMP STARTING a flat battery.
--Bring the two vehicles as close as possible to each other—they must NOT touch.
--make sure nothing is switched on or attached to cigarette lighters in both vehicles.
--ignition on BOTH cars must be OFF
--Attach the RED jumper lead to the + (positive) on the flat battery (make sure the other end does NOT
touch anything!)
--Attach this RED lead to the + (positive) terminal on the good battery.
--Attach the BLACK lead to the – (negative) of the GOOD battery. (Make sure the other end does NOT
touch anything)
--Now clamp the end of this BLACK lead to a metal part in the engine bay—NOT NEAR the DEAD
battery. Make sure the leads do not interfere with drive belts or the FAN.
--Start the engine of the BOOSTER vehicle and let it run for 3 minutes.
--After 3 minutes, start the car with the dead battery and let it run for 3 minutes.
--Turn the vehicle OFF (with the GOOD battery).
--Disconnect the BLACK cable from the engine bay (car with dead battery)
--then disconnect the BLACK cable from the car with the GOOD battery.
--Now disconnect the RED cable from the car with the GOOD battery.
--Then disconnect the RED cable from the car with the FLAT battery.
AT ALL TIMES USE CARE WITH ATTACHING CABLEs.
I would recommend that if you don’t have a manual that checking a website with relation to your year
specific Corvette would be a good idea as different series may have differing ways to access your Vette if
it is locked and you cannot access it to lift the bonnet.
Some people will tell you that this procedure can damage your electronics—read your manual and check
on the above procedure. I am told that if you follow the above instructions to the letter, that no problems
will occur. Cheers Mike.

C2 - 1963 to 1967
The earliest serial number air conditioned Sting Ray has a production build date in October, about 6 months
before the rest of the AC cars. The reason? The owner was a GM executive and the car returned to Chevrolet
for refitting with AC.
An error was made in creating the roof panel mold in 1963, using the wrong side of the dimensions, such that
all roof panels were too small. This left a gap seen in the door pillar above the door latch in all but a few 1963's
to 1967. The ones where it is not found were cosmetically covered up with body filler.
Power steering was first available in the 1963 Corvette.
Bill Mitchell and Zora Arkus-Duntov argued over the "Split" rear window for the new Corvette. Bill Mitchell won
out for the 1963 Model, but it was removed for 1964 never to be seen again.
The 1963 Grand Sports, while originally looking much like the production coupes, had no body parts in
common. The fiberglass body panels were roughly half the thickness of production panels to save weight.
The 1963 Grand Sports originally were released without fender flares, using the stock look. However, they
were wider to allow a wider tire 8.25x15 rather than the stock 6.70x15 tire.
Only the driver's side vent on the 1964 Corvette is functional.
The first major tire size change in Corvette history occurred in 1965. Tire size changed from 6.70x15 to
7.75x15
While the 427 was developed first, the 396 went into the Corvette, Chevrolet, and Chevelle in 1965 due to a
GM policy restricting them to less than 400 cubic inches.
The 396ci 425hp engine lasted only one year 1965.
1965 was the first year to have two separate hoods - the smooth small block hood and the bulge of the big
block hood.
The 1966 Corvette was not eligible in SCCA Trans Am, due to the upper limit of 5.0 liter on engine
displacement. Chevy's only eligible car was the Corvair.
1967 was the first year to have three hoods: the small block hood, the big block hood, and the L-88 hood, even
though externally the L-88 looked like the regular big block hood.
In late February and early March, 1967, some small blocks received the big block hood due to an industrial
accident with the small block hood mold. These were not given the hood stripe.
The "GM Mark of Excellence" sticker appeared in one year only- 1967.
Federal law mandated the removal of spinners from wheels in 1967, so the knock off wheel of 1963-66 was
replaced with a bolt on wheel.
1967 was the first year "Vinyl" was offered as an optional exterior covering for the hardtop.
The '67 model was the first to have the "tank sticker", or the build sheet, attached to the gas tank.
The maximum install fuel tank capacity was offered in the Corvette from 1963 to 1967, 36 gallons.
An option was offered in 1967 that lasted for only three production years.. A speed warning indicator.
The '67 LeMans Racer was "DRIVEN" to the track from the airport (in place of being trailered) was because
the trailer was chuck full of parts!

General Business:
Brad told members how the planning for the 2012 Concourse was progressing and asked everyone to PLEASE
bring their Corvette – even if they don’t think it is a show car. The Concourse is meant to be the main venue for
ALL QCC members to meet and greet for the year and the judging is a secondary event.
John Webro asked members how far it was to Charleville, (7-8 hours drive) for his upcoming participation in the
2012 Endeavour Rally. We wish John and his crew good luck and safe trip!

Davis Chell asked for more details
on the upcoming Lismore Car Show, which Chris will make into a Club Run for
August. It is a lovely drive and a big, well organised Show.
Events Coordinator:
Past Events.
FND at Runcorn Tavern :- Trip leaders the Coombers reported a good rollup of 22 members, with 5 Corvettes being
driven. Good food and fun night had by all.
Brekky run to Mt. Glorious:- A very well attended Event with 14 Corvettes making the early start to join Bryan
Wharton for this run. New members braved the cold the cold and got a chance to meet some of the “oldies”.
Chandon Supper:- Brad had us all laughing at the troubles so many members had with their cars for this Event. The
weather was appalling, but the camaraderie was excellent and everyone got home safely. Camp Quality were very
pleased with our efforts, once again. Thanks all who attended (or tried to like Mike Reptik!)
Pine Rivers Festival:- John & Susie Webro braved freezing weather to attend this terrific car show and rockn-roll
concert combined. A couple of other Corvettes attended amongst the 400-500 cars there. Great night!

“They should sell tickets to ride in the ZR-1
There’d be a queue for miles”
Quote: Joshua Dowling – Top Gear
It’s a monster and it’s a lamb …
The Ultimate
Corvette
Putter around town, keeping its
supercharged LS9 6.2L V8 below 3000
rpm and it’s as easy to drive as any sports
car. But dip hard into the throttle and the
ZR1’s exhaust butterflies open while the car
unleashes its full 476kW and 819Nm. of
torque to the rear tires – and this amount of
grunt only needs to move around 1500kg,
more than 300kg less than a Commodore.
Then listen to the glorious, ripping exhaust
note that’s music to any enthusiast’s ear.
The fastest Corvette ever
With a top speed of 330km/h and
acceleration of 0-100km in 3.3 seconds
it’s scary – unless you’re a racing car
driver. The ZR1 will easily do 110km in
first gear!
To put performance numbers in
perspective, the ZR1 has about 10% more
power than the latest Ferrari 458 Italia and
Lamborghini Gallardo V10 supercars – and
a staggering 50% more torque than either
of the Italians.
