Darlington
Borough
Council
to Fly Gay
Freedom
Flag over
Town Hall
Gay Advice Darlington / Durham are
organising Darlington Gay Pride 2008
on the evening of Monday 11th August.
This year GADD approached Darlington
Borough Council and asked them to
show support for LGBT people who live,
work and socialise within the Borough
by flying the Gay Rainbow Flag over the
Town Hall on the day.
Barry Birch, Chief Executive of GADD
stated “The Council’s decision to fly our
flag is a fantastic sign of support for
the Gay Community and this Gay Pride
event. This year we are focusing on ‘Zero
Tolerance to Homophobia’ in our schools
and colleges; on our streets; in our pubs
and clubs; at our places of work and in
our homes. This Gay Pride night will be a
rainbow coloured extravaganza promoting
‘Freedom from Hate’ and ‘Freedom to be
Ourselves’.
... news in brief
The rainbow flag originated in San
Francisco at the 1978 Gay Freedom Day
Parade. It represents the six continents of
the world where Gays & Lesbians are to
be found. It symbolizes Unity & Diversity,
Hope and Optimism—Freedom for All. The
colours represent: Red = Light; Orange =
Healing; Yellow = Sun; Green = Serenity;
Blue = Art; Purple = Spirit
Although pride events are about having
fun, they also hope to raise awareness of
serious issues the gay community face such
as homophobia. Homophobic incidents can
and do happen but there are organisations
who can help. Local agency ARCH, working
with Mesmac and LBI North East, have
a reporting system for people to report
homophobia. This has been running for
over a year and has helped many people
experiencing homophobia.
Darlington Gay Pride will be taking
place in the following licensed premises:
Inside Out, The Quays, The Turks Head,
Joe’s Bar and Seen. There will be lots of
entertainment including school anthems,
camp handbag and dance music, Drag
Acts, Fire Eaters, and Stilt walkers. The
Fancy Dress Theme for the night is
‘Schools Out’. There will also be 100’s of
Camp, Rainbow and Fun prizes.

ARCH
Pride has made a welcome return to
Newcastle after its last appearance
four years ago. It has been an exciting
opportunity to celebrate the diversity and
inclusion of all the community.
Neil Denton, Co-ordinator for ARCH said “If
you see or are the victim of a homophobic
incident, it is important that you report it
to ARCH. Even if the incident is not, in the
eyes of the law a criminal offence, you
should still report it. The more information
ARCH can gather, the easier it is to stamp
out hate crime.”
How do I report a homophobic
incident to ARCH?
• Call 0800 032 32 88. This 24-hour
telephone line is confidential and free even
to mobiles, and can be linked to language
line.
• You can report something that has
happened to you, to someone else, or
something you have witnessed.
Call into an ARCH reporting centre. These
include:
• Mesmac North East: Tel 0191 233 1333
• Outpost: Tel 0191 222 1937
• Any Newcastle City Council
Customer Service Centre
• Any Your homes Newcastle Housing Office
• Victim Support: Tel 0191 274 4274
Once you have told ARCH your experience
you decide what happens next. You can
keep your details anonymous and choose
which agencies you want to help you.

a review from Tom Gorman
Northern
Pride
Organisers and public alike have hailed the first Northern
Pride a huge success. The community lesbian, gay, bi and
trans (LGBT) festival, held over the start of July, culminated in
a Pride Parade and Pink Picnic in the centre of Newcastle.
Over 400 revellers took part in the parade, despite a tight
restriction on numbers and many more lined the streets joining
in with the carnival spirit. Onlookers cheered as the colourful
troupe, led by members of the superbly noisy Bangshees,
snaked through the Saturday shoppers.
As the parade arrived in one of Newcastle’s most beautiful parks,
the Mayor opened the Pink Picnic, followed by bands, stalls,
and the odd tipple. With over 2,500 Picnic goers there was
a great buzz in the air.
Speaking about the events Tom Gorman,
Chair of Northern Pride said,
“The atmosphere was absolutely amazing, it really was a day
to be Proud. I was so pleased the weather held out – I even
managed to get sunburnt!
“I think the best bit for me had to be the shear mix of people –
old and young, scene-goers and non-scene folk, plus people had
travelled from all over the region to be part of it. It truly was the
biggest Pride event the Northeast has ever seen.
“The hard work of the committee, and the dedication of Sian
Broadhurst, Community Development Worker for Newcastle
City Council inparticular, meant all our events were a brilliant
success.
Comedy fans weren’t disappointed with Scott Capurro and
friends at The Last Laugh comedy night. The ever sparkly and
highly titillating Jonathan Mayor as compere gave Stephen K
Amos and Mandy Muden a close run in the laughter stakes.
Plans are already afoot for next year’s festival, if you’d like to get
involved take a look at www.northernpride.org.uk out for details
of Northern Pride’s AGM taking place in late August.

Bangshees
You have probably heard the
BANGSHEES, maybe at this years
Northern Pride, but what is the Womens
Drumming Group all about…
The idea for the group came from a
drumming workshop organised by
Sheboom at Pride on Tyne in 1999. A
group of women from Newcastle interested
in forming their own drumming group
met in October 1999. There was a lot
of organisational work covered in the
first few months – writing a constitution,
fundraising, lottery grant applications,
seeking rehearsal accommodation, etc.
After much discussion the group settled
on a name: BANGSHEES.
Eight years on and the band is well
established, with 25 women of all ages
from 20s to 60s, working in a variety of
jobs and some retired. All activities to do
with the band are undertaken voluntarily
and within the constraints of work
commitments. There are always women on
the waiting list and we recruit regularly.
Member subs, grants, and occasional
busking pays for the instruments and
practice hall rent, and some of the many
gigs that we play at are paid. We play at
charity and sports events and festivals,
or busk for charity donations, and always
receive much appreciation. The tunes we
play come from various sources, but there
are talented members who write tunes that
are just for us. Sometimes we play with
other local bands.
The Bangshees have a colourful
and interactive web site at
www.bangshees.com
LGBT /Police/ Hart Gables
Communication Initiative
Cleveland Police is committed to promoting a citizen focussed service to promote
positive relations between police and all groups in society.
Officers from the Neighbourhood Safety Unit at Hartlepool Police together with support
from local ward based officers are working with Hart Gables to open an effective
communications forum – The aim is to improve access to services for the LGBT
community and to enable local police staff to gain a better understanding of issues
affecting the LGBT community in Hartlepool.
Sgt Chris Dawber from the Neighbourhood Safety Unit at Hartlepool Police said – “
Our aim is to work with Hart Gables to develop a meaningful dialogue with the LGBT
community in Hartlepool – Research by Hart Gables locally and Stonewall nationally
has illustrated that there is a reluctance in the LGBT community to report incidents to
police – We are actively working with Hart Gables to change this and ensure that the
LGBT community in Hartlepool know that the police service is here to serve the whole
community. Issues such Domestic Violence and Anti – Social Behaviour and Hate Crime
will not be tolerated and will receive a prompt proactive response.
Pc Ian Royle and I were invited to an open evening at Hart Gables recently and
we enjoyed an evenings open and frank discussion around policing and the LGBT
community. Future meetings are planned and Supt Andy Summerbell the District
Commander will be attending to reinforce our commitment.”
If any members of the LGBT community wish to talk to police about any of the above
issues they can either contact their local ward officer or PC Ian Royle – the LGBT
Liaison Officer within the Neighbourhood Safety Office at Hartlepool Police Office on
01642 302144. John and Joanne at Hart Gables can be contacted on 01429 236790 or

The Tees
Valleys Biggest
Gay Night
Moves Home…
After a year at Basement and a short
stay at Middlesbrough club Warehouse,
Think Pink, promoters behind the now
legendary SATUR-GAY have moved the
weekly gay clubbing extravaganza to ‘the
Cornerhouse’.
Promoter Simon Hatfield told us, ‘What we
have achieved over the past 18 months has
been massive, and has only happened because
of the hard work of our own team and the
team at Warehouse and Basement who have
helped make the night such a huge success.
Our move to the Cornerhouse represents the
start of a new chapter for us, and a new,
exciting Challenge to break more barriers and
bring gay clubbing right to the forefront of the
Middlesbrough night-life scene. The excitement
the whole team at the Cornerhouse have for
the night is fantastic, and working with them
promises some huge nights, live PA’s and an
all round better clubbing experience in the
months and years to come.’
The principle of SATUR-GAY will stay the
same, all be-it at a new home, legendary
hosts Honey Lingus and Flic Ma Bean will
still be gracing the door and the decks with
new sisters Anna Mosity, Gina Tonic, and
Duchess Davinya. Think Pink are already
busy planning the summer months activities
with a few surprises along the way.

The Big Cruz Weekender
Harvey’s
Just as we thought the Darlington Gay
Scene on a Monday couldn’t get any bigger
a call comes in to the Out North East
offices, whispers of a new bar ‘Harvey’s’
opening! Those who have been heading
to Darlington for a good few months (the
Scene Queens!) will have fallen in love
with the Blue Room, well, if you’re a past
punter you might just recognise Harvey’s,
because its in the same building!
However, that is where the similarities end!
Because half a million pound later and the
interior looks somewhat different! Once you
have made your way along the 25 metre long
red carpet all the way through Richardsons
Yard you will be met with an extra bar, more
sumptuous leather furniture than you can
shake your copy of the new Out North East
Magazine at and a kick ass sound system.
August sees the launch of the Brand
New Monday nights, Blasphemy and the
promoter’s hope it will be a welcome addition
to the scene and provide an ideal watering
hole after the popular Gaylicious at Joe’s.
Well worth a visit! Look out for snaps in
the Scene Out of our next issue!
The Big Cruz Weekender promises to be one of the Biggest Gay Parties
in the North East this summer. A weekend of fun centered on the Newcastle
Gay Quarter. With a Pop Garden and Frixon special on the Bank Holiday Saturday
night to set the ball rolling followed by the main street party on the Sunday
afternoon, with local talent, drummers, street entertainers and the legendary
diva Angie Brown headlining the show.
Most of the bars will be holding various events during the weekend,
with Drag, Karaoke competitions and the usual mayhem.
Unlike previous years this Bank holiday festivity is collaboration between
key operators, designed to celebrate the diversity of the Newcastle Gay Quarter,
but also to have plenty of fun! The whole weekend closes with fireworks
and an After-show party at The Powerhouse with Pop sensation Alphabeat!
Paul Knox of Pure Leisure enthused “It’s a real coo for us to have secured
Alphabeat and Angie Brown for the weekend - its going to be a great
weekend for all of us – and we have given people something to stay
in Newcastle for August Bank holiday.
THE BIG CRUZ WEEKENDER – Wristband entry £3 – available
in the Gay Quarter bars, Clone Zone or on the Gate.
Charge includes charitable donation and offers.

ICONS – Out Northeast Icons. Words; Paul Corduex | Illustration : Brand Nu
Madonna
Turning 50 this summer and hitting the headlines again following
rumours of an imminent divorce from hubby Guy Ritchie, Madonna is
never far from the public eye. Her award-winning career has spanned
the decades and on the rare occasion she tours, her shows are immediate
sell-outs. You may think you know a lot about the chameleon of pop,
you’re probably her Number 1 fan, but just what makes Madonna one of
the biggest gay icons in recent history?
Her path to stardom began when she left
her Catholic family in Michigan and moved
to New York City in 1977 with $35 and a
straight ‘A’ graduation from Rochester Arms
High School. Hard to imagine now, but the
young Madonna Louise Ciccone faced tough
times in New York and took jobs in fast food
restaurants to make ends meet. She fell back
on her dance training and performed when
and where she could.
By 1982, Madonna had toured as a dancer
and had fallen in and out of several
relationships with men. Most notably,
Stephen Bray with whom she had written
and performed several dance tunes under the
band name Emmy. On the back of Emmy’s
demo recordings, Sire Records signed
Madonna to their label and spawned albums
and singles, including Like a Virgin which
went to Number 1 in the ‘States selling 12
million copies worldwide.
Within four years, Madonna had appeared
in several films, and had Number 1 singles
and albums in the UK and America. Although
her acting performances were generally
met with moderate critical acclaim, the
films were commercially viable. 1985 saw
a collaborative US Tour with the Beastie
Boys entitled The Virgin Tour. Madonna’s
work continued a contradictory sexual and
religious theme throughout the 1980s and
she sparked a fashion trend amongst young
women for wearing jewellery with religious
crossed and lace tops.
Now married to actor Sean Penn, Madonna’s
career looked set to explode as she released
1986’s True Blue album including the
Top5 single Papa Don’t Preach. She acted
alongside Penn in several productions and
made her stage debut in Goose and Tom-Tom.
It was during this second phase of her career
that she gained negative publicity from the
Catholic Church into which she had been
baptised. The Pope himself urged Italian
Catholics not to support her world tours and
to boycott her music. It is from this period
that some of Madonna’s most memorable
songs images come, closely associating
Catholic symbolism and sexuality.
Following the set-up of her own record
label Maverick in 1992 and her divorce form
Penn in 1989 following a troubled marriage,
Madonna embarked upon yet another stage
of her development. Her most successful film
came out of this period, 1996’s Evita in which
she played the lead role of Eva Peron. The
mid-nineties were dominated for Madonna by
more sexual themes and a cooling off of her
commercial appeal as a singer. Her albums
were banned in some countries for their
strong sexual content and S&M connotations.
Her infamous first book, Sex, was also
released by Maverick and sold well despite
being slammed for it’s overt sexual and erotic
content.
It was as the 90s ended and the new
millennium approached that we were
given the first glimpses of the Madonna we
now know and love. Her music career was
revived and in her personal life she met and
began a relationship with the man she was
to marry and form her longest partnership
with, British film director Guy Ritchie.
Musically, Madonna’s albums Ray of Light,
Music and Confessions On A Dance Floor
were commercial successes with the only
notable failure being American Life, which
was her most unsuccessful album to date.
Her latest album, Hard Candy was released
this year and he has enjoyed success with
the first single 4 Minutes, as well as making
her directorial debut with the film Faith and
Wisdom. Madonna’s latest world tour entitles
Sticky and Sweet begins in August 2008.
Having weathered the storm of her troubled
relationships and successfully fought the
critics Madonna has become a legend in
her own lifetime. Mystery and speculation
surrounds her and she has caused more than
her fair share of drama and controversy. As
her 50th year approaches, single once more
and facing an uncertain personal future,
Madonna can take strength from the millions
of gay and straight fans for whom she is the
ultimate icon.

Jason Caddy chats to Anders, from Alphabeat
14
Danish Viking King Bluetooth
made warring factions kiss
and make up, and his name
now lives on thanks to mobile
phone technology.
A few years later came a certain lager
which was, the ad men had us believe,
reluctantly shared with the rest of the world.
Then there’s the bacon and the butter.
Joining the pantheon is Denmark’s latest
export, Alphabeat. Jason Caddy touches on
everything from The Magpies to Madonna
in conversation with lead singer Anders SG,
ahead of the group’s gig at
Newcastle’s Powerhouse.
You’re playing Newcastle twice this year,
first as part of the BIG CRUZ WEEKENDER
at The Powerhouse club. What do you
know about Newcastle and Geordies?
Our drummer Troels is a big fan of Newcastle
United FC, and my favourite beer before
coming to the UK was Newcastle Brown Ale.
It’s now in my top ten, after I was exposed to
all the other beers that you have here.
You are set to play Manchester Gay Pride the
same weekend as The Big Cruz weekender in
Newcastle.
What do you make of your Gay fans?
We had no idea the gay community had such
an interest in our music back in Denmark.
It only became apparent once we came to
the UK, and we are all blown away by it. It
makes sense that gay people like us, as we
are about being open-minded and fun.
You were on the BBC’s Something for the
Weekend recently, and you had played GAY
in London the night before. You mentioned
how overwhelmed you all were by the
reception you got.
14.Out NorthEast
www.outnortheast.com
Definitely. Some of our absolute best gigs
have been in gay clubs. Gay people really
know how to let loose and have a great time.
And we all had hangovers that morning,
which was probably obvious during the
interview.
You recently turned down the opportunity
to support the Spice Girls Tour. Why was
that? Which is your favourite Spice?
We had only been in London a matter of
weeks when were approached. It would
have been just too weird to stand in front of
20,000 people and then ten people at our
first tour. We wanted to do things on our own
terms. My favourite spice girl? I’d have to say
Victoria, because that’s my girlfriend’s name.
2008 has been a very busy year with a sellout second tour.
Are you working on your second album?
Our guitarist, Anders B, writes our songs and
he’s continually penning stuff. The songs
on our first album were written over four
years, so we are looking forward to writing
an album that captures a particular mood,
reflecting where we are as a band. We
recorded a lot of the last album as live, so
now we are all much more in to production
values and tinkering with the songs in their
rawest form to yield more interesting results.
What have been the highlights so far?
Playing live anywhere is a highlight, but
what really stands out is the headline gig at
London’s Koko, about a month ago. That was
just spectacular.
If you want to see Alphabeat before they go
Stratospheric in the States, catch them at
Manchester Pride and at The Powerhouse on
Saturday 24th August.
You mention Wuthering Heights in your
single 10,000 Nights. Is Kate Bush an
influence?
Our lyrics have many references and that
particular one isn’t an allusion to Kate,
although Hounds of Love is a brilliant album.
People can take what they want from the
way we write and that’s fine by us. It’s very
much open to interpretation.
What bands have most influenced you?
We all have a Hot Chip (British electropop
band) fetish right now. We like their music
and can’t really say a bad word about them.
I wouldn’t say they were an influence.
That credit goes to David Bowie, Chic and
Madonna - real 80s is what we love.
What are your thoughts on Hard Candy?
Troels really likes it. I have only heard the
singles and I thought they were a bit weak.
You have been a big hit in the UK, any
plans to break into the US?
Does it want to be broken? We are planning
on going for a couple of months, doing the
basic stuff. Nothing like the promotion work
we have put in here.

2007 saw the first Middlesbrough gay
Pride (called “Supergay”) take place in
September. Large numbers of people
attended a variety of events, including
a March and Family Day out, which took
place in different venues around the town
and the Event was a great success.
The organisers told us “This year will be

Go head to head Wednesday evening, 10th
September, in the Central Library with gay
authors Paul Magrs(Something Borrowed,
Strange Boy) and Helen Sandler (Diva book of
the dead and undead).
Thursday 11th sees the showing of a film
made by the local LGBT community about life

group Open Clasp.
Friday sees the welcome return of the Drag
Idol event at the Oak on Newport Road –
come and strut your stuff and maybe win a
prize! Ophelia Balls will host, together with
Middlesbrough’s own Young Men’s Group.
This is followed by Pout for Pride Special at
Onyx Rooms. Unmissable.
Saturday will see the Pride in the Park event.
The day’s events open with a March in
colourful dress through the centre of town
to Central Square, Middlesbrough, where
there will be Stalls, rides and entertainment
through the afternoon. In the evening, The
Oak and SATUR-GAY will host a simply

Sunday afternoon, when you’ve recovered
from all that partying, why not get some

This year’s Manchester Pride Parade passes
right through the heart of the city.
A carnival atmosphere will fill the streets
of Manchester and is set to enthrall the
thousands of spectators - young and old,
gay and straight, friends and family - who
come down to see the glamorous and the
outrageously fabulous people who take part.
This year, we have a whole host of new
entrants and some amazing costumes and
entries.
Please note - you do not need Big Weekend
tickets to watch the parade, however you will
need them to get into the Big Weekend site
in and around Canal Street afterwards! www.

What are looking forward to?
The parade is a big one as it always delivers
year on year. It’s so great to see the streets
of Manchester filled with thousands of
spectators - young and old, gay and straight,
friends and family. This year, we have
a whole host of new entrants and some
amazing costumes and entries. Then of
course there is the candlelight vigil which
brings the festival to a close. This magical
moment gives us the chance to remember
the people we have lost to HIV and Aids- the
atmosphere is truly moving.
Can we expect anything new?
As always we’ve got the big weekend which
is the main crowd puller- but not only that
we’ve a fun packed list of events going on
over ten days. This year for the first time ever
we’ve got the Manchester Pride chamber
music event at BBC Manchester. It’s a series
of lunchtime concerts running throughout
the festival exploring the role of music in the
struggles for equality around the world.
We also have a few new exhibitions worth
checking out. There’s ‘My First Pride’, an
exhibition at Urbis which will document
18 years of mementoes and memories from
first timers at Manchester Pride. The Military
Pride exhibition at the Imperial War Museum
North is another unique aspect of this year’s
calendar. This is a small and powerful display
built around personal testimonies which
reflect how war and conflict has shaped lives
in LGBT communities and I personally think
it’s fantastic.
How have ticket sales been so far?
They’ve been great. We’re up on last year
with over 10,000 purchased so far. For those
who have yet to buy a ticket visit www.
manchesterpride.com or you can call 0870
166 0429.
You can get a Big Weekend pass for £17.50
(plus booking fee) until 22nd August and
£20.00 (with no booking fee) thereafter,
from the box office. Day tickets are £10 (plus
booking fee) until 22nd August and then £15
(no booking fee). A good chunk of the money
raised will go directly to LGBT and HIV
related causes, so it’s worth every penny. We
hope to see you there!
Did you ever anticipate the success
Manchester Pride has had over years?
I could have never imagined such amazing
success. Each year I’m absolutely blown
away- from the dedicated team of volunteers,
the passionate crowd and all the businesses
that get involved- everyone wants a piece of
Pride. What makes it even more fantastic is
that people keep coming for more.
And finally, what would you like people to
take away from this year’s event?
I just want each and every person to have
fun and embrace everything that Manchester
Pride has to offer, especially as this is such an
important year. For some it may even be their
very first Pride- what a great year to start
making memories.
Manchester Prides ten sparkling days

Each travel piece that I write I
focus on a place that I have been
to recently or a place that has
a special meaning for me. On
the latter, one place that is very
special for me is Newcastle my
home and place of work. However
it is not really the norm to holiday
in your own city, and can you
ever really be a tourist on your
own turf? Well I think not. But in
taking a leaf out of a famous travel
writer who ‘holidays’ once a year
in his own home town (New York)
I am going to give a mini insiders
guide to Newcastle.
22. Out NorthEast
www.outnortheast.com
Perfect for day trippers who want to escape
the confides of Eldon Square or for those
feeling the ‘credit crunch’ and maybe not able
to get to far flung places this year. As with
many UK cities the high street is the focus of
many people when visiting a city and a few
other well known must see’s. Now Newcastle
has Northumberland St, the Big Market and
the Quayside to mention a couple, all great
in their own right but there is a lot more to
see and do. For the shopper, if you venture
beyond the brands on Northumberland St,
you can pick up a huge range of unique and
great buys.
For those wanting vintage and one offs
head to High Bridge St (just off the gorgeous
Greys St). Attica is a shop that sells the most
mouth watering range of vintage clothing
and furniture, it is like an Aladdin’s cave
with beautiful glittering objects commanding
your attention, and very reasonably priced
furniture to give your home that retro urban
feel. On leaving Attica you will be greeted
with a range of little boutiques selling
clothing that will give your wardrobe an
unique edge at some bargain prices.
Near Central Station are three great
Newcastle institutions crammed onto Pink
Lane. For the shopper there is Electric Sheep
with great art and clothing to boot. Near by
is The Fourth - in my opinion the best pub in
the city offering a great range of drinks and
food in a laid back, chilled and understatedly
stylish décor. This has to be on of the
friendliest pubs in the city. Stepping out the
door at a weekend late you are faced with
23
the Jazz Café, offering a great alternative to
more traditional nightclubs in the city.
Now the Big Market is hardly my scene on
an evening, but during the day it has a great
place for meeting friends for a delicious
Greek lunch at very reasonable prices (with
amazing service) - Café Neon. Not only is the
food lovely but it offers a chance to people
watch as the lives of city residents from every
walk of life are played out in front of you in
the Big Market.
routine. I cannot possibly give an in-depth
guide to Newcastle in so few words (itself
indicating just how much there is to do in the
city now and surrounding region).
However Newcastle has so much to offer
and see that maybe stopping in a hotel for a
night or two and acting the tourist will open
up the city beyond the confides of its centre
and give you a whole new perspective on the
city, its residents and culture.
But if Greek is not your thing how about
contemporary Italian on Pilgrim St at
Paradiso? A great place with a very well
hidden balcony which may not have the best
views, but does offer great alfresco dining in
the sun. Whenever we visit cities for a break
it is usually the norm to explore as much
as we can, yet in our own cities we often

HIV +/-?
Last month I got married, or at least
civilly partnered. Apart from being over
the moon just because I was able to tell
everyone that I love this man, it was very
important for me because I’ve campaigned
for equal rights for years, and because I
was making a commitment to be with this
guy for a long time.
I’ve had three long-term male partners, and
the last two have both been HIV negative. I
was with my last partner for thirteen years,
and he remained that way throughout, and it
is my every intention that the same will be
true for my current partner. The professionals
describe us as a ‘sero-discordant couple’, not
very romantic sounding, is it? But I believe
that because we both know our own and the
other’s HIV status, it makes it a lot easier for us
to keep things that way.
During my last brief spell of singledom, I used
a well known gay social networking internet
site (alright, it’s a gay sex site, but social
networking sounds so much more refined!)
and I decided to put my HIV status on my
24. Out NorthEast
www.outnortheast.com
profile for all to see, to avoid those awkward
conversations, or deciding whether to tell or
not. Amazingly, quite a number of guys didn’t
bother to read that bit, but contacted me for
sex anyway. On more than one occasion,
when I said something like ‘oh, it’s good that
you’re not bothered about the HIV then’, said
guy disappeared at the speed of light. Equally,
I know there are lots of men on that same site
who are HIV positive but don’t disclose it. I
kind of understand why, if people respond
like that, but think about it for a minute. If you
would have sex with someone as long as you
didn’t know his HIV status, but you wouldn’t
have sex with someone if you know he’s
positive, how sensible is that? Even worse,
there are people who will have bareback sex
with someone, as long as they don’t know
that he’s positive, I know because I’ve had at
least one guy say to me ‘it’s ok, I know I’m
alright, and you look healthy enough, so….’ I
don’t think he expected a safer sex lecture!
Anyway, my point is this. If you’d asked me
maybe fifteen years ago whether I thought
people should get tested, I would have said
‘no’ for lots of reasons. Now, though, none of
those reasons hold. You can get a test and be
told the result in less than half an hour. Once
you know the result, you can get treatments
which are both a lot easier to take and a lot
more effective than they used to be. And you
and any current or future partners can make
informed decisions about the sort of sex you
want to enjoy, without putting either of you
at risk. What a lot of people, either positive
or untested, don’t realise is that having any
sexually transmitted infection combined with
HIV is a bad idea. Most of them give the HIV
a chance to progress much more faster than it
would on its own.
So my message is GET TESTED! And to all
the guys who are willing to have to enjoy sex
with someone who you know is HIV positive,
you are the good guys, and you’re probably
a lot safer than the ones who think they’re
protecting themselves by refusing to sleep
with people like me!

sit ups
help ?
Will 200
sit-ups a
day help
me achieve
a flat
stomach?
The false belief that performing hundreds
of sit-ups a day is all that is required to
gain a flat stomach is perhaps the most
popular myth I have to deal with.
By performing sit-ups or ‘crunches’ you are
helping to strengthen and firm up the rectus
abdominus muscle, more commonly known
as the six pack muscle. However, while this
may give you muscles you can crack walnuts
on, it will do nothing to reduce the amount
of fat stored on top of them. This means
that people are disappointed with their
results, and in some cases they succeed in
making the area more prominent rather than
reducing it. Abdominal fat is there because
of excessive calorie consumption, so the
only way to get rid of it is to burn off those
calories by following a balanced diet and
performing high-intensity exercise such as
running, swimming, cycling or aerobics.
There is one trick, however, which can help
to give the appearance of a flatter stomach,
regardless (within reason) of how much
abdominal fat you possess. Lying below the
rectus abdominus is another band of muscle
called the transversus abdominus. Sometimes
called the corset muscle, it helps to keep the
back strong and compresses the abdomen.
By exercising this muscle regularly, it can
help to improve your posture and make the
stomach appear flatter, even though you
may not have lost a single pound.
To exercise the transversus, all you need
to do is:
Suck
in
your
stomach,
drawing
your
navel
towards
your
spine
While your stomach is sucked in, do not hold
your breath, just keep breathing normally.
You will know that you are doing this properly
when you begin to feel a minor burning
sensation in the deep stomach. This is the
sign that the transversus has been engaged
and is being worked. Initially, this can be
hard to do as many people instinctively want
to breathe in as they draw in the stomach,
but with practice it gets easier.
This technique is by no means a miracle
cure but by performing it regularly, such
as in the car, watching television or sat at
work, it can help both flatten your stomach
and improve your posture. Good posture not
only makes you look slimmer, it also helps
protect your back against injury.

Under English law, where two people die
and it is uncertain who survived the other, it
is a general rule that the younger is assumed
to have survived the elder. As Alison was the
elder of the two, her assets including the
£63,000 death in service benefits would be
left to Joanne which in turn, as she had also
died, would be left to her family. Alison’s
family would be left with nothing!
Alison and Joanne were both primary school
teachers, with salaries of £31,500 and
£25,400 respectively. Both were members
of the teachers’ pension scheme, which
provides two times salary death in service
benefits (£63,000 and £50,800). Each
wanted the other to benefit from these and
therefore had nominated each other as the
beneficiary. Both had (homemade) wills
which basically stated that everything would
be left to each other and if no surviving
partner, the deceased’s family with a small
amount of money being left to the RSPCA.
Upon Brighter Pink’s advice Alison and
Joanne made new wills to make the
distribution of their estate fairer and also
established two discretionary trusts which
were nominated as the beneficiaries of the
death in service benefits. This increases
the flexibility of their assets and appoints
trustees to look after this money. So in the
event of each surviving partner’s death, the
deceased’s family can benefit fairly.
During a meeting to discuss their mortgage
with one of Brighter Pink’s mortgage advisers,
the consequences of this arrangement were
highlighted.
The FSA does not regulate some forms of
estate planning.

Dr Mark Casey talks about his fear….of flying
opinion
FeaR oF
FLYInG
If you have ever flown you will sit in one
of two camps, either you will LOVE the
entire experience or be more terrified of
it that than gay men are of ageing. Now I
used to belong in the ‘terrified’ group and
sat there proudly so.
You see I never let my fear of flying allow me
to miss a flight, I mean I have missed quite
a few flights, but never missed one through
the ‘oh shit, I can’t possibly get on that tube
of metal full of highly flammable fuel that is
going to hurtle at 500mph through the air’.
Not once. That is not to say I have not had
any near misses, I can’t count the number of
assistants who have had to practically drag
me onto a flight to ensure I actually get on
them (thank you BA and Virgin!).
Yes I have seen far too many 1970s
disaster movies with eva Gardner.
In the end all was good, the staff
on the plane were great, the plane
landed safely and the fire men
who followed the plane down the
runway were gorgeous to boot!
And Of course I am ever so grateful for this,
otherwise I would have missed seeing so
many amazing sights and meeting so many
people right across the globe. But over time
as I have had to travel more for work and to
see friends who have fanned out all over the
place my fear of flying has diminished to the
point where it was almost nil. So much so
that I had become the one half sniggering at
the ‘terrified’ and crying passengers waiting
to be called for their flights - like hello, its
just like getting on a bus, but slightly more
glamorous. But how the mighty fall.
shit I thought. As a frequent flyer (oh how
I hate that term, are you ever a frequent
train-er, car-er?) I knew straight away all
was not right. Just to add to my knowledge
that hmmm, maybe this is not working
as it should be the stewardesses looked a
slight shade of grey, which was an amazing
achievement to show through their usual
perma-tan state.
Very recently I was nipping off to the sun for
a few days after a couple of stressful weeks,
much deserved in my opinion. Now as we
were coming into land, at about 200 ft or so
from the ground the pilot suddenly throttled
the engines and began to climb steeply,
For the next 15 minutes we held over the
sea, no news off the captain and not a word
from the 200 deathly quiet passengers.
Eventually the surprisingly cheerful captain
informed us that the wings were not
working right and that we had to hold until
28. Out NorthEast
www.outnortheast.com
they would work (or until we ran out of fuel
maybe?) and that we would be going in for
an emergency landing. Now at this point I
would have given ANYTHING not to be on
that plane. For a further 15 minutes I sat
there thinking of the reality that we may
actually land but then crash/flip over/burst
into flames etc.
Sitting later that day drinking a very strong
G&T I was reflecting on how different it
could have all been and on how I should not
mock those still fearful of flying. But it also
reminded me that we can easily forget how
we all once were as people and to mock
those who may still be like our old selves.
It’s a bit like being lesbian or gay, sometimes
we can forget how hard it is accepting our
own sexualities or the difficulty of coming
out to others. So I am trying to make amend
for my ways. If I ever see you crying into
your fifth G&T at Gate 3 in the airport, I
may just nip over and join you for a drink as
we all need a little Dutch courage now and
again don’t we?
Gareth Longstaff with a brief guide to the North East for New Students
student feature
OUT ON
CAMPUS
Many students use their time at University
as a way to cope with the anxieties and
thrills of coming out as well as to build
new social groups. The stereotypical
image of the heterosexual North as a
place where football, beer and fighting
dominate social and cultural life can
make being a queer student in the region
pretty daunting, especially when it comes
committing yourself to study and life here
for anything up to five years.
However, when you look at the facts and
figures it is evident that a huge percentage
of LGBT students stay on in the region after
finishing their degree and it is not difficult
to see why. The established scenes and
facilities are some of the best in the UK
and what makes this area unique is its
ability to nurture and sustain a real sense of
community, solidarity and variety.
30
Newcastle is the main student city and the
gay scene is thriving with over a dozen
bars catering for all tastes. The ones which
attract a younger and more out going crowd
tend to be The Bank, Switch, One, Camp
David and Gossip and the rather fabulous
Powerhouse which is open until late most
nights of the week.
30.Out NorthEast
www.outnortheast.com
As a contrast there are lots of little pockets
of queerness in Newcastle which remain
unique and completely tolerant; the newly
refurbished Tyneside Cinema and Coffee
Rooms, the Star and Shadow Cinema, Cafes
such as Royale, Paradiso and LaBoca (which
also holds gay pride art events) as well as
Clone Zone to mention just a few. Both The
universities of Newcastle and Northumbria
have well established LGBT societies and
the beauty of being a student here is that
you can become as involved as you like in
LGBT culture with no pressure and pretence.
The sense of variety in the region also
spreads to Sunderland and Middlesbrough,
both cities have modern university
campuses and if you look for it some great
LGBT groups and spaces. On Tuesdays in
Sunderland there is the perfect gay student
night which is cheap and often the busiest
in the region, Middlesbrough has a new gay
night ‘Pout’ which compliments a scene that
hosts the usual stuff we all know and love
such a drag, karaoke and drinks promos
week in week out. Whilst Durham has one
of the oldest and best Universities in the UK
it can be a little stuffy so most of the student
population move between the larger cities
as the train links are regular and fast, which
means you will never be bored. The general
sense of LGBT visibility and inclusion is now
a common feature of life in the region and
the student population is an integral part of
that, so get out there and explore what there
is on offer, you won’t be disappointed.

at it’s very best then you need look no further. McEwan’s writing
includes the award-winning Atonement, which made it to the big
screen and was shot –in part – in our very own Redcar.
Although I found the film a little slow and self-indulgent,
the clarity of the writing and characters shone though.
Controversial. I love it! Trust the camp Scottish homo to spit in the
Asian guy’s face (seems like ages ago now doesn’t it?) and ruin it for
everyone! It’s all so predictable, so repetitive, so childish. So why
do I sit Summer after Summer watching the panto freak show that is
BB? You couldn’t write it! Or could you?
The first of this weeks offerings is the wittily titled Dead Famous
(complete with goldfish staring out of their bowl to emphasize
the pun), by Ben Elton. The older amongst you may remember Mr
Elton from his foul-mouthed, near-the-knuckle stand-up comedy
of the 1980s. If not, then you may be surprised to learn that he is
the comedy writer behind The Thin Blue Line and Andrew LloydWebber’s musical We Will Rock You.
Dead Famous is a Number 1 best seller than cashes-in on the Big
Brother mania that sweeps the land every year. It doesn’t make a
direct reference to BB but is as close as can be without upsetting the
lawyers at Channel 4. The book is a crime thriller set in a televised
house full of wannabes and wierdos. A murder is committed and
the impossible becomes possible as one-by-one the suspects are
eliminated. It is so convincingly written that I actually find myself
confusing the characters in the book with the people in this and
other BBs!
If you’re venturing abroad this summer, or you just want to make
the BB high last a little longer, buy this book, it’s a well written
surprisingly clever whodunit that will entertain and involve you
long after Davina has tottered off the stage.

With Saturday, McEwan has again put together an amazing story. This
time told over the course of Saturday 15th February 2003, following
the ‘day-off’ of eminent neurosurgeon Henry Perowne. Perowne
is an intelligent man, a respected surgeon, and a dutiful son to his
Alzheimer’s suffering Mother as well as being a Father himself to two
young adults. I’m not in the habit of re-telling the plot of the books
I review but a little is essential here. Set in London, the book opens
in the Perowne home, a large period house full of books and family
history. Perowne is awoken from his sleep in the early hours and sees
a plane coming in to land across the city with one of its engines on
fire.
Immediately, McEwan has begun playing with images of terrorism
and he doesn’t stop throughout the rest of the novel. We follow
Henry’s day as he fights his way through the anti-war demonstrations
to visit his Mum and then goes-on to play squash with a colleague.
However the mood of the day and of the book is changed when
Perowne comes face to face with Baxter, the ‘baddy’ for want of a
better term, who’s impact on the story and on the family as a whole
is pivotal.
McEwan’s control of the characters and what drives them is amazing,
as is his ability to take a potentially mundane story and turn it into
an emotional roller-coaster ride. I felt genuine disappointment when
I turned the penultimate page and realised the story would soon be
over. Read Saturday if you want to lose yourself in a story and be
shown how to spin a masterly tale.

This is without question the
biggest song in Ibiza this summer.
Its effortless piano rift could be
described as repetitive, but when
you add the synth, the bass and
the massive stop downs you’re
left with a song that’s more
uplifting than a Stair Lift on drugs!
If the song wasn’t brilliant
enough already, I think the line…
‘Champaign never gets boring’
really makes it for me. It’s got
an ‘of our time’ vocal from Sam
Obernik, think Lisa Maffia/Luciana
and you’re there. It’s getting
loads of plays on The Galaxy
Weekend and it’s going massive
everywhere.
Café Del Mar 08 –
energy 52 (out of
office Mix)
This is a funked up version of
Energy 52’s Ibiza classic, Out Of
Office have proper bought this
classic back… To be honest it’s
blinding, I’d shag it if the hole in
the CD was big enough.
Rolex sweep - skepta
This is hilarious, it’s like this
years Macarena but urban. It has
a dance that’s incredibly similar,
but that’s where the similarities
end. It uses the rift from ‘Wearing
My Rolex’, and the video features
Timmy Mallet. How could you not
love this?!

I remember writing in the last edition about
the difficulties of shooting outdoor scenes in
the UK especially in a poor summer!
Since this year has been so variable I decided
a visit to Spain was required with four lads for
some guaranteed sweaty bodies and hot passionate sex in the great outdoors! One of the
websites members had kindly offered his Villa
for us to use and it proved to be quite some
place; private and with very lush tropical gardens. I decided to do all our shoots at the Villa
rather than risk being discovered in the middle
of the sand dunes! You can see a photograph
from one of the shoots with the four lads in the
hot tub where we positively encouraged them to
remove their trunks… as quickly as possible! We
have some great content for the members over
the coming weeks, the sun seemed to bring out
the best, or should I say the worst of our models
and we have some real horny, hot humping in 2
sums, 3 sums and an orgy for everyone to enjoy.
On our day off we had decided to go down to a
local beach for lunch, swimming and sunbathing, when we arrived the beach was packed
with mostly young Spanish lads, a few families
and a few foreign tourists, but mostly seemed to
be local talent. Every one was in a great mood
and lots of the groups of young lads were playing beach tennis, football or volleyball, so there
was no shortage of flesh. As the day went on I
was surprised how much nudity or quick flashes
of cock was happening all over the place. Some
of the lads playing beach tennis were constantly
trying to pull down the others shorts and sometimes they succeeded leading to a great roar of
laughter from the friends. Then just fifty meters
up the beach another group playing football
all ran to the sea and when in the shallows all
pulled down their boardies and jumped in and
swam naked for about 5 minutes!
Needless to say a few people moved in for a
closer look! We were no where near a nudist
beach, but you could have almost thought it was,
perhaps after all I could have done my shoots
in the quiet corner of the beach and caught all
the straight lads in the background playing their
games. There is always something seemingly
naughty or funny about pulling down mates
trunks, perhaps all those straight lads are just
curious to see who is the biggest?!

Your Horoscopes with Jasmine Starr
Libra
September 23rd - October 22nd
horoscopes
Aries
March 21st - April 19th
If you are looking for lurve - spend some time on looking good
- you are set to catch the eye of an admirer! It could be that you
are destined to meet someone special. Don’t be shy - get flirty
and have some fun. If it gets too serious too quickly that could
always be a good sign! If family and friends start interfering
then take advice sparingly - go with your heart, not your head.
Taurus
April 20th - May 20th
If you think you know everything there is to know about your
partner, prepare for a surprise! You may feel that you each
have different priorities, so if one of you goes off on a tangent
or changes their attitudes or beliefs it might start to pull at the
relationship. The trick is to give each other some space to grow
as individuals, and allow the relationship to evolve naturally.
Gemini
May 21st - June 20th
Feeling fed up with life generally? Just bored or lethargic with
work and family? Try some home improvements. Nothing largescale, but a few well chosen feel-good decorations can radically
alter the mood. Maybe join a new group or club to get your confidence up. You may be introduced to somebody with some wild
ideas about developing yourself. Following their advice might
prove worthwhile!
Cancer
June 21st - July 22nd
There may be changes on the horizon: you or your partner might
be made a tempting offer which could mean some significant life
changes. Start planning for such an eventuality - don’t expect
everything to fall into place naturally, otherwise you’ll be in for
a bit of a shock! Talk things through with friends and family,
and ensure that you stay in control of the situation.
Leo
July 23rd - August 22nd
You’ve had your fair share of bad relationship experiences, so
maybe you’re feeling a little reluctant to get involved in anything too intimate right now. Could this be because you usually
rush in with all guns blazing? Try taking it slowly. Hold back
with your feelings until you have established a true connection
with your new partner. Gain their trust and offer yours and allow time for things to develop naturally.
Virgo
August 23rd - September 22nd
You have some serious choices to make very soon with your
partner. You may feel carefree and happy-go-lucky, but your
other half might be seeing things from a grown up sensible perspective. Deal with your differences sensitively so that neither
one of you feels hard done by. If you are single - you’ll be in
party mood, and a chance encounter might lead to something
very exciting!
50. Out NorthEast
www.outnortheast.com
You may find that your lover is becoming more and more
demanding, and that this is putting pressure on you both. Let
them know before it gets out of hand, or you’ll soon find yourself as a doormat! Give and take is seriously missing at the moment, so lay down a few ground rules. This might well extend
into your social network too. Any friends who have been taking
liberties with your good nature will soon find themselves put in
their place!
Scorpio
October 23rd - November 21st
About time you thought about yourself dear Scorpio! You’ve
been pushed and pulled from all directions and it’s time to get
away from it all. Give yourself the opportunity to really chew
things over in your mind. If you’re in a relationship then don’t
neglect your partner. If you’re free and single then keep an eye
out for someone with their eye on you! Try to find some time to
get them alone, and see what happens...
Sagittarius
November 22nd - December 21st
You might be finding it difficult to communicate with someone, so
getting the help of a friend may not be a bad idea. You’ve hit a real
stumbling block and any help you can find to get you over it will
be welcome. Once you do start to get through make sure you are
prepared to compromise, and keep the communication lines open.
You might find that a change of setting helps things along - so
check out last minute deals and make a break of it!
Capricorn
December 22nd - January 19th
You’ve been having a bit of a chin-wag with a colleague, and
you’ll find what they have to tell you very interesting! It appears that you are the subject of some secret interest. It may be
work related, or it may not... Either way, you will have a decision to make shortly which could impact you far more than you
might imagine! Consider the impact on friends and family, and
think very carefully before you decide.
Aquarius
January 20th - February 18th
You will notice that someone close to you is in dire need of your
support, and you are best placed to offer a shoulder to cry on. This
might take you away from other tasks, but you must put your friend
first. Elsewhere, your expertise is required in a social group or club
you belong to. You should find the time to help them out too, as it
will be well rewarded!
Pisces
February 19th - March 20th
You are in the frame of mind for surprising your loved ones with
gifts and favours. This is being very well received. Your lover
is benefitting from your generous spirit too, and will be keen
to repay you! You might find that this penchant for doing the
unexpected wanes a little as work and social commitments take
over, but fear not, you’ll be back to your old tricks soon enough
- just keep an eye on how much it costs you though!
