Middlesbrough Council has signed up to a
joint commitment to improve equality and
support diversity in Middlesbrough.
The Middlesbrough Joint Single Equality
Scheme or SES Framework involves the
Council’s partners including Cleveland Police,
the University of Teesside and Middlesbrough
Voluntary Development Agency.
The scheme aims to create a local community
of organisations working coherently together
on inproving equality and supporting
diversity across a wide range of essential
services.
Middlesbrough is one of only a handful of
areas in the UK still working on joint equality
projects of any kind. The Middlesbrough joint
SES Framework is both the widest ranging
and the most ambitious of its kind in the
country.
The groundbreaking approach is a new way
of thinking about developing equality, and it
has received attention from national policymakers.

Do You Want
To Make A
Difference
To The
Experiences
Of Lesbian
And
Women In
Newcastle?
The young peoples charity Streetwise,
based in central Newcastle is currently
conducting research looking in the
needs of Lesbian, Bisexual and
unsure young women aged
13 – 25 years old.
Streetwise are looking to find out, from
you, what you think about current service
provision, and what you would like
to see in the future.
You can email your thoughts to Sarah@
streetwisenorth.co.uk or you can head
down to Streetwise, in the Big Market
11.30 – 1.30pm on Friday 31st October.
Supermarket chain Tesco has turned a major
corner and has had to change its policy
on Transsexual use of toilets thanks to
interventions from Gay Advice Darlington/
Durham (GADD) and the Gender Trust. In
light of the debacle at London Pride by those
ignorant of the law and with poor judgement
where a Trans woman was asked to leave
the female toilet queue for the ‘Ladies’ in
Trafalgar Square this summer. This is a major
victory for Trans equality.
The Supermarket in question was in the
North East and was denying access to the
conveniences to several Trans Women
unless they provided proof of gender with
a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC). This
was in direct contravention of guidance and
since the change in the Sex discrimination
Act 2008 (Goods Services& Facilities for
Transsexual People).
Gay Advice Darlington Criminal Justice
Worker and Gender Trust Representatives,
engaged with the Senior Management to
point out the direct contravention and how
they should look at this carefully.
Sir Terry Leahy, Tescos Chief Executive wrote
‘I accept that the request to see Miss X s
GRC was inappropriate in this situation and
I would like to offer my sincere apologies for
any upset this caused’
‘Tesco is currently introducing training
to cover Gender & Sexual Orientation as
part of our diversity training and this will
be rolled out throughout the business by
2009.’ GADD’s Emma Roebuck told us that
although this has occurred it is a sign of
improving times that action has been taken
and the mistakes corrected. Hopefully other
organisations will see the error of their
ways and seek to prevent the need for
organisations like Gay Advice Darlington/
Durham & Gender Trust
to have to intervene.

At Centre Square, the Mayor, Ray Mallon,
gave a short address and noted the Event’s
growth from the previous year. “You have
made an impact on the town,” he told the
crowd, “for all the right reasons. “The gay
community will always be welcome here.”
The crowd was entertained in the afternoon
sunshine by fair rides, stalls and local bands;
then a surprise guest arrived - Rowetta from
the X factor. The main artiste of the afternoon
was Lolly and a huge crowd gathered in
front of the stage to wave their arms and sing
along to Hey Mickey.
Organisers estimate that over 1000 people
attended the event - 10 times that of the
previous year. Clearly the event was a real
focus for the local gay community and can
only go from strength to strength. One
festival-goer said later “the Pride walk was
amazing and whole event was well done. I
can’t wait for next year.” Yes, indeed.
See you there!
SUPERGAY
September saw the second annual
Supergay in Middlesbrough, which
surprised many this year, with its increase
in numbers across the festival.
At the first event on the Wednesday, over 30
people attended the successful Authors event
in the Central Library. On Thursday, a short
film and play, both made locally, were shown
to a packed house that greatly enjoyed the
immensely funny and thoughtful production.
Friday night saw Drag Idol at the Oak bar,
with a capacity audience, many dressed in
drag, whether performing or not. The prize
went to Lesley Duggan in a striking costume
and all agreed that it was her enormous
*stage presence* that won the night!
8. Out NorthEast
www.outnortheast.com
The club nights were popular; Think Pink
told us that about 600 people were at the
Cornerhouse - the largest number ever to
attend the Satur-gay event.
The highlight of the festival was undoubtedly
the Saturday Fun day. The sun came out
to play and so did the gay community.
Organisers counted over 200 people in
the parade - 3 times that of the previous
year. Gay footballers, Christians and a wide
representation of the town’s gay community
were made more colourful by the addition
of drag queens in high heels at the front of
the march, which was led by the Lesbian
drumming group the Bangshees. Passers-by
looked on in amazement and many came
out from the shops to watch the fantastic
spectacle walk by.

Do you
feel Limp?
Newcastle’s original Alternative Gay night
is returning to Sea Nightclub, weekly from
Wednesday 8th October.
Previously Limp Rizted was being run as a
successful monthly calendar event. Now Sea
Nightclub has taken a massive step, making
this a weekly night every Wednesday. Limp
Rizted is a night run by gay promoters who
want an alternative to the scene, offering
music previously unavailable at a gay night
this side of Manchester. With two rooms and
two music policies, the night caters for most.
Room one giving the best in Rock, Indie,
Alt and Electro, whilst Room two will be
supplying you with Cheese Chart and Dance.
tLimp Rizted’s simple aim is to provide
music for everyone’s taste with no ridiculous
price tags. This is shown with drinks prices
starting at £1.50 for selected bottles and
£2.50 for a double house spirit and mixer.
And to launch their comeback onto
Newcastle’s scene, they are bringing you an
Electro DJ set from Lostprophets front man Ian
Watkins. This is Ian’s first visit to Newcastle
as a DJ, we were told he is looking towards
being a part of one of the most memorable
nights of 2008!
Limp Rizted promises live PA’s on a monthly
basis with local bands too in-between, so
check out their Myspace or Facebook for
upcoming events.

GEORGE
michael

In 2008 he celebrated his 45th birthday, the 12th anniversary of his long-term gay
relationship, the end of his 2-year-old farewell tour and the release of the tie-in
album 25Live. He is one of the highest earning and highest selling British Male artists
of the last 20 years and he has had a string of high profile public misdemeanours.
He’s an institution around the globe; he smokes cannabis and talks about open
relationships frankly and honestly, without shame. His name is George Michael and
he is a very British gay icon.
Born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, June 25th
1963 in North London, George Michael as
he is more commonly known showed early
signs of the talent and potential which have
now become his hallmark, when in 1981
in his late teens he formed ‘The Executive’
– an early collaboration with Andrew
Ridgeley. George and Andrew had met at
comprehensive school and after this initial
foray into music, decided in late 1981 to form
the duet Wham!
Wham’s first single was Wham Rap and
certainly got the publics attention, their
follow-up single and first real hit Young Guns
(Go For It!) propelled the duo to stardom
and signalled the first of a string of UK hits.
In these early days, George Michael was
linked publicly with several famous females
including Whoopi Goldburg and Brooke
Shields and the headline grabbing stars of
Wham! were never far from the front pages.

Wham! disbanded in 1987 with a sell-out
concert to a 72,000 strong Wembley crowd,
Michael released his second solo hit of the
decade A Different Corner to critical and
commercial acclaim and followed it up closely
with a groundbreaking duet I Knew you Were
Waiting with Aretha Franklin. Michael was
the first white mail artist to record with the
soul star Franklin and the single went on to
top the charts around the world.
Michael’s first solo album Faith hits the
number 1 spot in the UK and USA in
November 1987 and went on to sell 16
million copies worldwide. The album earned
Michael a Grammy, 2 prestigious Ivor
Novello’s and 3 American Music Awards.
Embarking on the Faith Tour of 1988,
George Michael cemented his appeal as an
international superstar.
1990’s album Listen Without Prejudice
Vol.1 marked a change in musical direction
for Michael and although it wasn’t quite
the success Faith had been, it still topped
the global album charts and garnered hit
singles. Listen without Prejudice Vol.2 was
never released and this strained relations
between Michael and Sony Music to whom
he was signed. In 1995 Michael eventually
negotiated a contractual release from Sony
Music and signed to Virgin Records and SKG
Music going on to produce the enormous hit
album Older in 1996 which is now 5 times
platinum in the UK and is gold or platinum in
34 other countries around the world.
The early 1990s were a difficult time for
Michael as he came to terms with the death
of his lover Anselmo Feleppa in 1993 of an
AIDS related condition. Michael’s mother died
of cancer during these years. Older was the
culmination of this dark period and with it’s
release and critical acclaim, came the chance
meeting in 1996 with Texan Kenny Goss,
who was to become Michael’s long-term
partner. The late 1990s came the to represent
a renaissance for Michael’s music and he was
showered with more Novello and MTV Europe
Awards for his work. His fourth solo album
Ladies and Gentlemen: The Best of George
Michael reached Number 1 and he had
more hit singles with Outside and As. The
former being the result of an ‘encounter’ in a
public toilet in America with a Beverley Hills
Police Officer in a public toilet which was to
see Michael arrested, fined and ordered to
complete 80 hours of public service.
This event became a watershed in Michael’s
career, he went on to openly acknowledge
his homosexuality and discussed what it is to
be in an modern open gay relationship and
to cruise for casual sex as part and parcel of
the relationship. This is in stark contrast to
the Wham! years when Michael was at pains
to disguise his sexuality for fear of offending
his Mother.
Michael released several singles during
the early naughty’s and in 2004 topped
the global charts yet again with the album
Patience. 2006 saw the beginning of his
2 year long farewell tour and 25Live is his
latest album release. Michael has once again
bucked the commercial trend by announcing
that he will effectively retire from live
performance and only release low-key music
over the internet for fans who are committed
to his long-term goal of producing timeless
quality material. Ladies and gentlemen I give
you George Michael, a modern gay icon.

of Bangkok
Hope you enjoyed our 2 days of summer...
Well on a sunny Sunday afternoon I had
the pleasure of meeting Leyla, one of the
Ladyboys, she had a little spare time just
before her early Sunday show and agreed
to meet with me whilst her lashes were
drying..!
this year being their 10th anniversary tour,
“Devils & angels, which has a cast of 17, 5 being
guy’s.
I was ushered round to the dressing room where
all of the cast were getting sorted for the show, so
me being me, nearly went a over t on a huge
big pair of angel wings and landed next to leyla,
she has been touring with the show for 5 years
and joined from Mambo Cabaret in thailand, one
of the biggest ladyboys static shows. Her family
come from sukhothai, which is North of Bangkok,
the show I found out tours for 8 months of the
year then the cast get a well earned 4 month
break, When touring leyla’s favourite places
are Edinburgh and Newcastle, I asked her what
her favourite routine in this show was and she
loves performing “Get the Party started” along
with the spice Girls routine. looking at leyla,
her make up was flawless and I couldn’t help
thinking that I wish I had those cheekbones...!
It takes the girls; sorry guys about 30 minutes
each evening get all the powder and paint in the
right places to create that simple, but so effective
look. I was interested in how the show was
thought out and put together and that comes from
the choreographer anthony and is over looked
by Carol and Phillip Gandey from World Class
Productions; the guys behind the brand! My time
with leyla flew by and I had to get to my seat
and leyla had to get into her first costume, so I
said my thanks to everyone and headed back
passing these fantastic red feathers, they wont
miss one! ;-)…(Only joking guys).
I was joined by friends so we all settled down
to watch the show, for a sunday afternoon
there was an audience of over 225 and it had
a fantastic atmosphere. One of the highlights for
me was the opening number - “Get the Party
started”. Rihanna was a new addition to the
show, but the classics were still there including
“One Man Woman”, and ‘My Way’ which never
fails to receive a standing ovation. I absolutely
loved the sound of Music number, and in the
second half, the show managed to go from
sheena Easton into Meatloaf’s ‘Bat Out Of Hell’ –
how many shows could get away with that!

Described as ‘more hairdresser than

resident house band on BBC 1’s ‘Friday

four had originally been billed to appear
at The Arc in Stockton in September,
lucky for you though they
had to re-schedule, so there is still
time to get tickets!
all of the costumes had an individual look
and style about them and you could see a lot
of thought had gone in to the planning of the
entire show.
the ladyboys are loved and respected wherever
they perform and still have another 22 towns
and cities to cram in after they leave Newcastle
and that’s all before Christmas...! If you don’t or
never get the chance to visit thailand, to see a
show there, you really have no choice but to go
and see them next time there in Newcastle.
thanks to everyone for their kind hospitality and
I for one am looking forward to next years show

By the time you read this, I shall have just
come back from my second visit to ‘Ground
Zero’ for HIV/AIDS, that is San Francisco,
which is the city where a doctor first noticed
that his gay male patients were turning up
with rare infections and other problems
that just weren’t seen in otherwise healthy
young men. Back then, in the early 1980s,
they came up with the name GRID, Gay
Related Immune Deficiency.
the last time I was in san Francisco was in
1993, before really effective HIV treatments
were available. Gay men were dying in huge
numbers. I thought things were bad enough
amongst my friends, but I visited an aIDs
Crisis Centre in san Francisco, where I met a
guy only a little older than me. It was in the
Castro, the mainly gay district. He showed me
the area, then said “I used to know just about
everyone living here, now they’re all gone”,
in fact by then more gay men had died in
that one city than the total number of people
infected with HIV in the whole of Britain!
the thing about going to the Usa is that I
basically have to become an illegal immigrant
for the duration of my stay. In spite of what
I’ve already said, which shows that the Usa
is not exactly free from HIV, the country still
effectively refuses admission to anyone who
is infected. Now even if I was planning to
spend the whole of my holiday there having
unsafe sex with the maximum possible
number of partners (which I’m not, my partner
wouldn’t like it much!) I really wouldn’t make

in the country.
two years ago George Bush promised to
remove this particular hurdle, and the senate
have very recently voted to do the same, but
at the present time it still remains in place.
It means I have three options; take the risk
of travelling with my anti-HIV drugs, getting
caught and sent home, never to be allowed
back in, not take any drugs for a fortnight,
which some people do choose to do, but which
research has shown is really stupid as it gives
the HIV a chance to become immune to all
your treatments, or to send them in advance
by post, which is ok if like me you are going to
visit friends so you have a safe address to post
them to, but for many people going to stay in
hotels etc, that option is not open.
travelling is stressful for anyone at the best
of times, travelling across time zones and
trying to work out when you need to take
your treatments is another problem, surely
we really don’t need to be faces with another
totally pointless hurdle across which we are
required to jump? On the other hand, I’m very
lucky, I’m still alive and well enough to be
able to enjoy a holiday!

Moab is My Washpot looking Good Dead
Stephen Fry. Peter James,
arrow, 1197. MacMiillan 2006.
Boys and girls, I have a confession to make. It’s a secret I’ve
been keeping from you. You thought you knew me well – the
glamorous writers lifestyle I lead and the crowds of adoring fans
everywhere I go, well it turns out that all along I had hidden
feelings you knew nothing about. I’m only a weak homosexual
after all. I’m sorry. Can you ever forgive me?
I don’t want this revelation to change what we have. We’re all
human; we all have weaknesses and emotions we cannot control. I
hope that you can see past what I am about to tell you and remember
the happy times we have shared. the truth is, while you have all
been lapping-up my every word, I’ve been lapping up every word
of someone famous. Ok! Ok! I’ll get on with it – I fancy stephen Fry.
there it is, in black and white. I quite like Matthew kelly too, but only
when he’s not talking.
Why!? I hear you screech. Well obviously Fry is a fairly attractive, tall,
dark and very well off man. But aside from the important things, he
is a genius. Quite literally. He’s one of the most intelligent people you
could wish to meet and he’s gay too! Hoorah for us!
In his autobiography Moab is my Washpot, Fry describes the years
from his birth through to his mischievous days at University and into
his early 20s. this unflinchingly frank and honest account covers
everything from how he came to terms with being gay, to the impact
of the prison sentence he served for theft on his relationship with his
parents. like me, you will be hooked and will be unable to put the
book down, even if at times your brain will beg for a rest from the
bombardment of perfectly written, almost poetic prose.
Moab has inspired me. It leaves me – as a writer and as a gay man
– feeling that I want to do better, that if I put my mind to something
I can achieve it and that no matter what happens no matter how big
an obstacle I put in my own way – if I want something enough I can
make it happen.
I love stephen Fry and I love his book Read it.
Our Rating 5/5
Snuff movies. I’d never heard of them. Apparently you make a
film of a real life murder and distribute it for the sexual arousal
of others people! Hmm don’t see the appeal myself, but it
certainly inspired Peter James to write Looking Good Dead, the
second instalment of the DI Roy Grace mysteries.
tom Bryce, the main character in the book after Grace and his
sidekick Branson, comes across a CD left by a stranger on a train, he
watches the CD when he gets back home and is then drawn into a
seedy underworld of snuff movies, sexual exploitation and danger.
the story opens in traditional Peter James style as chapter by
chapter we follow a handful of characters through snapshots of
their daily lives, then before you know it, you’re introduced-to
and understand the depressed, insecure, alcoholic wife and the
stressed-out modern father figure, desperately trying to hold onto
the tatters of his outwardly affluent lifestyle. James taps into modern
issues and themes of masculinity and the fragility of the human
condition, while describing the mundane and the ordinary – and
the whole thing is so readable! anyone of any age group or social
background could pick up this book and read it cover to cover. the
writer uses his intelligence as a communicative tool to reach out to
the reader rather than confuse us with immense detail or narrative,
which results in a book you cannot put down.
For Peter James fans, there is clever use of plot reference from the
first Roy Grace book (reviewed in Issue 10 of Out North East) Dead
simple, which he uses to give motivation to the main protagonists in
this latest story. these references back to the original story give the
eerie impression that you were actually there at the event or that
you remember hearing a character talking about it happening.
this is an uncommon technique in modern literature and
is used well here.
this is a brilliant and well planned addition to the Grace novels and
I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone.

ROME
Toasting my friends 30-something
birthday we were jetting off for a
few days to Rome a city that has
never really registered as one
of my ‘must see’ destinations,
but one I was looking forward to
getting to know a little.
Flying low cost you are likely to be arriving
into the Rome Ciampino Airport - not the
most glamorous of arrivals and somewhere
you certainly would not want to be delayed.
Jumping on a coach for the 40 minute
journey into central Rome it did not seem
all that promising, nearly every building we
passed in the sprawling suburbs was covered
with graffiti (unfortunately not with the talent
of Banksy), with the surrounding streets
seeming pretty unpleasant. However, don’t
be fooled, once you arrive in central Rome
you are soon greeted with endless elegant
streets, breathtaking historical buildings and
the endless sound of thousands of scooters
wizzing around with well dressed Italian men
and women in control – a city for tracksuits
this is not.

Italian food and meeting the locals to engage
in some broken Italian. After a good nights
sleep we headed early to the Vatican. We had
heard that you could often queue for hours to
get into this place - however we queued for
around 2 minutes! That’s the benefit of going
out of season. This was January and we soon
found there was no queues for anything,
although the downside was the sleety rain
and bitterly cold wind, but who can have it

exploring the city on foot, a perfect way to
really see all a city has to offer. By chance
we stumbled upon the Piazza del Popolo, a
huge Plazza filled with Egyptian and Roman
style sculptures and buildings, with this
being a great place to sit and watch the
people of Rome pass by in their immaculate
clothes. That evening we dined in a glorious
restaurant close to the Spanish Steps, but far
enough away so as not to be paying tourist
prices.
The Vatican exceeded all expectations
through its sheer size, immense beauty and
endless sights, art and architecture that
had my digital camera working overtime!
We really could have spent the entire trip
wondering through its immense halls,
churches and rooms. And I cannot begin
to communicate how beautiful The Vatican
is to the religious and non-religious alike.
After The Vatican we headed for some
much needed food before we set about
On the morning of the last day of our short
trip, we had two last things to do, visit The
Coliseum and find my friend a designer
imposter Fendi handbag. The excitement I
felt on first spotting The Coliseum was similar
to that of a child receiving that ‘must have’
Christmas present, it was overpowering. I
could not get my head around the history
of the place and its sheer size and amazing
condition all these centuries after its demise.
You can have a guided tour or The Coliseum
or go it alone - we did it alone and spent
hours searching every nook and cranny,
hoping to find some evidence of its bloody
past! The only animals that now stalk its
corridors are masses of stray cats which have
made it their home.
After The Coliseum we had but a few hours
to find that designer imposter bag. Feeling
like a cheapened ‘Challenge Annika’ we set
about scouting for those undesirables who
sell imposter goods to tacky tourists like us. I
have to say though, it was another great way
of seeing the city, and my friend got her prize
(which I believe dropped to pieces in days
of returning to the UK). Rome is a beautiful
city that exudes history and charm, although
maybe give the fake designer goods a miss!

Nutritional
Supplements.
Are they
a good idea?
Take a quick look at any magazine
aimed at the fitness market,
especially those aimed at men
and you would be forgiven for
thinking that the perfect cover
model body is only a tablet away.
Advertiser promise that their
supplements will help you to burn
more fat, build more muscle or
even speed up your metabolism.
Should you be taking them
and do they work?
If you are a professional athlete or hardcore
body builder then supplements play a part
in your overall training regime. They can
help to provide that extra edge that allows
them to run that little bit quicker, throw that
little bit further or gain that little bit extra
muscle that makes the difference between
coming first or second. The average person
however would be unlikely to see any
notable benefits. Since these products have
to be used in conjunction with a healthy diet
and exercise plan, the changes between the
before and after pictures are largely down
to that. The following are some of the most
well know supplements.
20.Out NorthEast
www.outnortheast.com
Creatine
This is used to enhance performance
in activities which require explosive
movements, such as weight lifting. Creatine
itself does not increase muscle mass, but
when working out it can give you that extra
boost of energy to help you complete a few
extra repetitions. The risks and benefits
have yet to be fully proven.
Protein Supplements
The body needs protein to build muscle
and people who are training heavily should
increase their protein intake. The best way
to do this is to eat foods high in natural
protein such as lean cuts of meat, chicken,
fish and eggs, failing this then a protein
supplement in the form of a shake can be
taken. Be aware that too much protein in the
diet can put stress on the kidneys.
Energy Bars
These are convenient snacks that contain a
combination of carbohydrates, proteins and
fats. They are a great source of energy when
exercising for long periods of time or when
you want a snack before going to the gym.
They are generally high in calories and are
intended as a meal replacement, not as an
addition.
Multivitamins
These can provide you with the vitamins
and minerals you may be missing from
your regular diet. You do not need to take
multivitamins if you are eating healthy, well
balanced meals.
If you do decide to take nutritional
supplements, make sure you carefully
read the labels and research the products.
Some supplements, even those labelled “all
natural” may actually cause more harm than
good, especially when taken in excessive
amounts. Also, beware of companies
who make outrageous claims about their
products. Supplements have their place, but for the
vast majority of us a healthy balanced diet
does the same job, is a lot cheaper and
certainly tastes better.

The Cult 24
of Celebrity
I have two confessions to make: I love
‘Celeb Airline’, ITV2’s answer to my tacky
TV dreams and that I check the Heat
Magazine website at least 5 times a day
for the latest in ‘celebrity news’.
I know it’s a disgraceful thing to own up
to, but I have stopped buying the magazine
and other such similar ones in my attempts
to remove myself from the cult of celebrity
that is so hideously rife. But when I say the
cult of celebrity, your mind is unlikely to
turn to Brad Pritt, George Clooney, Kylie, and
other such A-list stars, but more likely to
the Z-listers: Jade Goody, Chantel, Peaches
Geldof, Danielle Lloyd and the new evictees
from Big Brother 9. And then ask yourself,
‘why are we interested in the lives of these
people?’ Really what good do these people
bring to the world?
Ok, they may bring humour, but not in a
‘aren’t you funny and talented way’, but in
a ‘They are so funny to laugh at’ kind of
way. Watching the post Big Brother ‘What
they did next’ TV show last week, it was so
apparent that for many of the contestants
their current few days of fame had made
24.Out NorthEast
www.outnortheast.com
them think they were on the same fameradar as Tom Cruise. HELLO!?
You lived in a house and spent your entire
time bitching about people, is that talent?
Do they not see what happens to the
previous years contestants (i.e. that we tire
of them quickly and that the media which
builds them up sells newer editions of their
publications by knocking them down?). I
don’t think these people are doing anything
wrong and if they can make a quick buck
from quick and short lived fame, good on
them, but why are we so fame obsessed in
the early 21st century and have little value
for real talent and skills?
Such a preoccupation with fame goes
beyond those who may possess it or those
trying to gain a taste of it by wanting to
be on Big Brother 10, it permeates our
everyday lives. From the way goods are sold
to us in advertising, to the way we ‘market
ourselves’ through ‘striking a celeb pose’
in photographs and plastering our pictures
all over Facebook so our 2 million online
‘friends’ can see all the exciting, celeb like
things we get up to.
Through technology, consumption and
online communities we can create our own
fake sense of celebrity worth. If we can’t
access real fame we can create a fame
in which we are known for our ‘funny’,
‘silly’ and down right ‘crazy’ celeb style
antics to online friends. But surely its time
for a reality check on this? Rather than
comforting ourselves in fake celebrity to
make our dull lives sitting on a checkout
or working in a store (jobs I have done!)
seem worthwhile, surely it would make
more sense to invest time and effort in
improving our lives as we really live them
on a daily basis, rather than seeking comfort
in the fakeness of celebrity? And if we did
this, maybe society would give a little less
attention to the z-listers clogging up our
press and TV and more to everyday hard
working, talented and nice people who
actually do make a difference to our world.
It may seem like a naïve idea, but surely
there has to be more to life than reading
about Danielle Lloyds on/off engagement
and the latest (horrendous) handbag she
owns?

Round
up
All this week I have had a song going
round in my head. It took me a while to
recognise it as “Shotgun wedding,” but
as soon as I did, I realised why. Obviously
I had the old pit-bull in lipstick herself,
Sarah Palin, on my mind, or perhaps more
pertinently, her beleaguered daughter,
Bristols. Poor Bristol; 17, pregnant, her
Redneck boyfriend, Levi, has gone public
on Facebook saying he doesn’t ever
want to have children, and then her Ma
announces to the world “She is keeping
it, and she is marrying the father.”
Shame. We probably won’t ever know
what Bristol’s feelings on the matter are
(not unless she writes her own version
of “Mummy Dearest”) but if I worked for
Social Services in Alaska , I might be
asking some questions. Forced marriage
anyone?
This might have been an unremarkable
family drama if it wasn’t being played out on
the biggest world stage, with the backdrop
of the American election. I might be tempted
to think “why should I care?” but the truth
is, I do care. It looks like America has finally
got their very own Margaret Thatcher and,
if elected, she has some pretty unpalatable
views: whereas she is vehemently against
abortion, pro-choice and Civil Partnerships,
she is pro-hunting, the gun law and, er,
teaching Creationism in schools. This would
be a bad joke if it wasn’t so scary. History
has shown us much about the so-called
“special relationship” between America and
the UK, so much so that we often find that
what is over-simplified and overbearing
and over there, is eventually over here. Look
at all that rubbish about weapons of mass
destruction.
In all of this, I do have some sympathy for
Bristol and Levi. Just when she wants to
be crawling into a hole, she will soon be
marching up the aisle, probably before the
election in November. As for him, like the
song goes, “there ain’t no place to run ‘cos
your father’s got a gun.” He certainly has:
More importantly, so does her Mother.
On the home front, it will not have escaped
your notice that Britain is in the grip of a
housing crisis.
For those of us who are looking for a
home, this means the growing realisation
that the mortgage and housing market is
approaching a standstill. The Guardian
reported this week that house sales have
fallen by 50% and construction has fallen
to the lowest since 1945. Further, bank
mortgage lending fell by 20% in May 2008.
Just to pile on the misery, we are told this
week that house prices could fall as much as
12.5% this year.
For those of us who are homeowners with
a mortgage, home repossession cases have
almost doubled in the first three months
of this year according to debt and housing
advice charities. What’s worse is that Law
Centres and other advice agencies have
identified that many people are turning up
at court without attempting to obtain legal
advice. This is a worrying trend as failing
to seek advice prior to a hearing can have
disastrous consequences.
A person without legal back up is far more
likely to see a possession order granted
against them. This brings them one step
closer to losing their home. Seeking
advice before the hearing allows time for
paperwork to be considered and evidence
to be gathered. It is then possible in certain
circumstances to achieve a much better
outcome such as a suspended possession
order or even no possession order.
We know from anecdotal evidence that
lenders tend to be aggressive in their
pursuit of possession. They will commonly
approach homeowners without solicitors
outside court and persuade them to agree
to unrealistic repayment deals. The court
then grants a suspended possession order
to the lender on the basis of this agreement.
Inevitably, the homeowner is unable to keep
up with the repayments and the lender is
then able to apply for an eviction warrant.
Often, though not exclusively couples can
get into mortgage difficulties when they are
splitting up, or having their Civil Partnership
dissolved. At a time when you will feel
really low and vulnerable, don’t risk losing
your home as well as your partner! Most
Solicitors who offer Legal Aid will do an
eligibility check for free. If you can get Legal
aid, great. If not, then try and negotiate:
they might do it on a fixed fee basis to help
you limit your costs. In any event, it’s worth
asking.
It is therefore essential that legal advice is
sought once possession proceedings have
been issued. It is far better to arrive at
court prepared and with someone who can
argue your case for you, especially if the
other side is aggressively chasing their case.
Remember , if you’ve got a dog, you won’t
need to do the barking yourself.

Lady GaGa Just Dance
Pink So What!
this song has been No.1 in
sweden and to be frank, any
song that’s a friend of sweden
is a friend of mine. she’s signed

think that makes it urban, Just
Dance is proper pop. It basically
sums up a night with me... “I’ve

where are my keys? I lost my

in November and if it doesn’t
get played everywhere it’ll be a

Forget the wet and drippy ‘sinead

song about your ex. It’s fucking
amazing to be frank, she’s
obviously going through a divorce

“I guess I just lost my husband,
I don’t know where he went”.
then she’s like, “so what! I’m

amazing! It’s been the drug I’ve
needed whilst going through my

some might describe this as a

love it, it’s got a bit of a 60s edge

fun, feel good record. Perfect for
the cold and lonely nights ahead.
Guru Josh Infinity 2008
(Klaas Vocal Edit)
I am totally bumming this record
at the moment, It samples ‘Colours
- Holding Me kissing Me’ which I
totally love (although technically
they sampled him because Infinity
was originally out in 1990 but you
won’t remember that). Guru Josh
takes a trumpet, a heavy bass
line and a vocal not dissimilar to
scooter and although that sounds
like a disaster you’re guaranteed
to be dancing to this soon!
Buzz Junkies Ft

(Cahill Remix)
this is another record that’s been
botoxed for 2008, and it so hits
the mark! I’ve loved this song
since I can remember and the

sounds enough like the original
not to ruin it, yet completely
different and fresh at the same

lot fuller and uplifting, you’re

what will you
dare to wear?
There are so many brands of underwear
to choose from where do you start? Well
I thought I’d share with you some of the
things we consider when it comes to
presenting your package!
Before writing this I started browsing through
a few a models photo folders and came
across a photo of James, where he is lying
down on the fireplace with his hands in his
pants. Now how many times are you walking
down the street and you see a str8 lad,
usually with a bunch of his mates, wearing
trackies and he is doing exactly that, hands
down inside his pants having a fiddle! So if
you’re wearing trackies you’re probably going
to be wearing boxers as you want quick and
easy access into them. I guess we all like to
think that str8 lad is keeping himself semi,
so he has a decent bulge for when the wind
blows against them!
I think I just got sidetracked, but the reason I
started that discussion is we tend to find most
the str8 models we photograph fall into two
categories; the first being those who don’t
really think too much about their undies and
28.Out NorthEast
www.outnortheast.com
wear some baggy old things and the second
group who love underwear and more and
more straight men are thinking about their
pants! With all the underwear ads you see
nowadays, plastered in magazines, billboards
and on the sides of buses you’d find it
hard not to be influenced by all those men
wearing tight fitting boxers or briefs.
So when I lad comes to a shoot wearing
white or black boxers then we usually try him
in a few pairs of other pants to see which fit
him best. All brands have a subtly different
fit so it’s not until you have had a str8 lad in
and out of a few pairs of pants that you know
what will suit him! It’s amazing how many
of these lads like the smaller briefs once we
have found the right style for them. We quite
often play with matching their eye colour or
putting paler colours on them when their skin
is quite pale. A tanned ripped body seems to
be able to carry off pretty much any colour
and style!
The old classic white and black underwear,
well we still like white briefs as they come in
handy when you get them wet, though I have
to say I find white and black boxers a little
boring after years of shooting them, though
we still seem to shoot them loads! Of course
white briefs show shape and form the best as
they show shadows and highlight most clear,
where as the black boxer tends to make you
look “bulge-less”
Of course one of the other considerations
with pants is can the lad get in them? All
too often when you put them in briefs they
are fine to begin with, but with a hard on
you can’t keep them covered… so what do
you do? Well just take them off!! Our view
is hard-ons are for sharing not for hiding in
underwear!
So I guess if your going to an underwear
party buy yourself some white briefs with
a contrast waist band, white is the best for
showing your bulge and the bright waist
band will get them looking down there!

Hi Boys and Girls.
Hi guys and girls. YES, I’m back. Sorry that I was not around last
issue to sort out your problems and answer your questions, but
even an international star like me (ha ha) needs to take a break
from time to time. Well there has been a lot going on while I was
away so let’s get down to your problems and questions out there.
Hi Trixie, I just don’t know what to do please help as my life
seems to be falling apart. I am a gay man of 26 and have been
with my partner who is 28 for the last 4 years. For the first two
years our life together was just perfect in every way. I thought
it could never get better and it did not. My partner started
going out with friends a lot more and coming home drunk
4 or 5 nights a week. I did not mind at first as he had a very
stressful job and put it down to him relaxing after work. Then
the real problems started, he started coming home straight
from work with a bottle of vodka EVERY night and drinking
the full bottle. If I said anything about what I thought may be
a problem he would shout and scream and go to the shop and
get more. He has been doing this for nearly two years now
and it’s got to the point where he is out of control. He is just
hanging onto his job and I am at the point where I just can’t
take anymore of his drinking. What can I do? I love him and
want to help him; but I don’t know how to.
Well having worked in and around the gay pubs and clubs for
over 20 years I can tell you I have seen a lot of people destroy
their life and others around them with drink. For some strange
reason the word gay and vodka seem to be friends. Well they are
far from it. Sadly the only person that can help your partner is
himself. He has to first admit he has a problem and then seek
help. If he is not prepared to admit he has a problem then I don’t
mean to be unkind but he is on a road to nowhere. You need
to get some help as well as this is affecting your life to. A good
place for you to start would be AL-ANON (www.al-anonuk.org.
uk) 020 7403 0888 they offer help to anyone whose life is affected
by someone else’s drinking. They will give you info on how best
to support and guide your partner. You need to help yourself first
as this problem is not going to go away on its own. Good luck
love Trixie.
I need some advice. Am I ever going to get over the pain of
breaking up with my partner after 5 years? We split just 5 weeks
ago and my heart is breaking. I still love him very much but he
wants nothing more to do with me. He has met someone else
who I think he was seeing while still with me, and has just told
me to move on and get on with my life. I just don’t know what to
do. He is my world, without him I am nothing.
Well first let me tell you one thing. YOU are something, you’re
brave to write in and tell everyone you need help. Sometimes
the hardest thing for anyone to do is ask for help. So your strong
and brave, you are bound to feel low and sad after 5 years with
your man and now nothing, but there was a life before him and
believe me there will be a life after him. The best thing that man
has said to you is to move on and get on with your life. Don’t be
62 Scotswood Road, Newcastle, NE4 7JE Tel 0191 221 2571
sad over some guy who has cheated, hurt you and broke your
heart. Get out there and meet new people, live your life and I
promise as time moves on the pain will get less and less. Trust
me I really have been there. Talk to your friends and family and
never be shy to ask for help to get you past this sad time in your
life. Be happy love Trixie.
I have met a girl at work and she is just so nice I have fallen in
love with her. She is straight but knows I am a lesbian and is cool
with that, but I want more. I want her and dream about her 24/7.
How can I tell her how I feel and what I do if she says no?
You’re in love! Well call me old fashioned but I would say you’re
in lust! Your not going to do yourself any good by telling a
straight girl you love her and having to face her ever day at work
after you drop the bomb shell. Just think about it before your
heart and sex drive take over your mind altogether. If you’re sure
she is straight then what is the point of you getting knocked
back! If you think she might dabble then all your going to get is
a quick fumble and a broken heart, above all that, you will still
have to see her everyday at work! Why not slow things down
take the heat and the lust out of it all and be friends and see
were things go. Don’t jump in with your eyes closed or you may
find yourself with no love and looking for a new job because the
pain is too much to bear seeing her every day.
That’s about all I have got space for this time I have been
deeply touched by the problems in this issue. They are real life
problems that people face every day in their lives. It’s a big bad
world out there but if we stick together and help each other
out it can be a great world! I’m always here at Out North East
to help you whenever I can. Be happy and kind always. Until
next time love always
Love always ... Miss Trixie xxxxx

Your Horoscopes with Jasmine Starr

september 23rd - October 22nd
horoscopes
aries
March 21st - april 19th
You might feel that emotionally you are being pulled from pillar
to post at the moment. Everyone wants your help and advice.
But you need a break, and a partner or close friend will be able
to offer some comfort. try to find opportunities to exercise body
and mind - you will be surprised how this can change the
mood! You will find as well that your relationship is enhanced
with the person who offers you the shoulder to cry on.
taurus
april 20th - May 20th
things are hotting up for you taurus. No Bull! Events are about
to take a turn for the better, both romantically and career-wise.
Decisions, decisions! some advice from a wise old friend would
be well taken. You’ll feel in the mood to settle any old scores.
the gift of the gab will help you get what you want! socially
you’ll be the life and soul of the party. Enjoy!
Gemini
May 21st - June 20th
Your partner or a loved one is in a particularly cheerful frame of
mind, and this will rub off on you too! Friends will also be making an extra effort to lighten your spirits. In a fancy-free frame of
mind you’ll be in the mood for a shopping spree or a last minute
break. Enjoy the mood while it lasts, but keep one eye on your
spending - otherwise it will soon change!
Cancer
June 21st - July 22nd
If you get your head down into the mundane tasks which need
your attention then you will be able to reflect upon things that
have happened over the past few weeks. It may be that you feel
the need to re-acquaint yourself with an old friend or colleague.
act whilst the desire is there and get in touch. Hard graft at
work or home will start to see rewards - your partner is likely to
want to acknowledge your efforts with a series of treats!
leo
July 23rd - august 22nd
If you sowed a few seeds earlier this month, then they might
now start to bear fruit. Expect a financial windfall and positive
changes to your life in the coming weeks. If you are waiting
with bated breath for the results of your actions then you should
get your answers very soon. and prepare to celebrate when
you do! Gather friends and family together as they will want to
congratulate you on your shrewd decision making and resultant
good fortune!
Virgo
august 23rd - september 22nd
Friendships and close relationships take precedence at the
moment. If you’ve been ignoring someone or haven’t devoted
as much time as you should have to someone special, then it’s
about time that you did! Use a bit of your charm to win them
over! If you’ve been missing out on social time recently then find
some time to put aside for meeting up with friends. If you are
planning a trip or a major change in your life then plan carefully,
as the implications may be wider reaching than you think!
42. Out NorthEast
www.outnortheast.com
You have some urgent personal matters that warrant your
immediate attention. But you will need help from colleagues
and friends. knuckle down to the jobs in hand, and then make
sure you have some time out. take yourself on an awayday or
arrange a social gathering. Your mind will be much clearer and
uncluttered, and you will be able to rest easy in the knowledge
that, for the time being at least, your problems are solved!
scorpio
October 23rd - November 21st
If you need to ask a favour of a friend, or just get something
off your chest, then now is the time. If you have been holding
back, then hold back no more! You’ll surprise youself with how
assertive you will come across. But don’t make too many plans
- a friend may have cause to call in a favour or run some ideas
past you. You will be in a receptive mood and will be pleased
to help out.
sagittarius
November 22nd - December 21st
Right now if you get in with the right people you’ll find doors will
start to open for you. But beware of someone being over-friendly
- they have suspicious motives! One of your bosses may let slip
something they shouldn’t, which gives you a competitive edge
over colleagues. Use the information to your advantage, but keep
it to youself! Career-wise, things might well start to take off as a
result of this!
Capricorn
December 22nd - January 19th
You are much in need of a change of scene, but there are very
few opportunities to get away from the daily grind. You may
feel that you have to leave things to a trusted colleague for a
while, but that person is notably absent from proceedings. You
might then have to get everything in order yourself before you
take your time off. But it will be worth it. Enjoy the break and
return refreshed!
aquarius
January 20th - February 18th
a close friend’s behaviour is starting to get on your wick! aquarians are sociable sorts and don’t usually fall out with people, but
in this case you might be resisting the urge to put this person
straight. they may have badmouthed you or misrepresented you
in some way, but the key for you is to rise above it, however much
the temptation is to speak your mind! Romantically you are in for
an exciting time with your partner, so this may help take your
mind off your wayward friend.
Pisces
February 19th - March 20th
You have been very creative lately, and you want to share some
of your ideas and inspirations with friends. Feedback is likely
to be positive, but if there are any negative comments you may
start doubting yourself. Don’t be put off though; have faith in
your abilities and put your energy into more creativity. Make a
concerted effort to prove your doubters wrong, and show them
your true capabilities!
