SIGHTSEEING IN MAINZ | INDEPENDENT TRAVELLERS 2015
Sightseeing
in Mainz
Visit Mainz, the beautiful city on the Rhine. The regional capital of Rhineland-Palatinate
offers a wealth of history and culture, fine food and fantastic wines.
Mainz Cathedral (St. Martin)
Sitting in splendour on the market square is Mainz Cathedral, which was originally built
in 975 under Archbishop Willigis. The cathedral has suffered fire and devastation many
times over the centuries and has undergone many restorations. The most notable features
include the tombs of the archbishops, the Romanesque Chapel of St. Gotthard and the
late-Gothic cloister. The chapter buildings and cloister are now home to the Cathedral and
Diocesan Museum, whose art treasures span two thousand years of church history in Mainz.
Gutenberg Museum
Four thousand years of writing history from around the world are explored at the
Gutenberg Museum. A pivotal figure in this history was Johannes Gutenberg from
Mainz who, 550 years ago, invented a method of printing using cast-metal type
and the printing press. Among the museum’s greatest treasures are two original
Gutenberg Bibles from the mid-15th century. The reconstructed Gutenberg workshop
is another highlight.
Roman Mainz – Mogontiacum
Mogontiacum was a place of great importance in Ancient Rome. Mainz quickly
developed into a military (and later civilian) centre for the region. On many occasions,
Mainz was chosen by emperors as the headquarters for their military campaigns.
In the year 2000, the remains of a temple dedicated to the ancient Egyptian goddess Isis
and the oriental deity Magna Mater were discovered in Mainz. The temple, thought to have
been in use until around 300 – 400 AD, is one of a number of Roman ruins and museums
(such as the Roman Seafaring Museum) that fascinate countless visitors every year.
Old quarter
Tranquil squares, lovingly restored half-timbered buildings and magnificent baroque
churches give the old quarter its charming character. Behind rococo facades and in
fine baroque townhouses you’ll discover elegant boutiques, cafés and wine taverns.
There is always something going on in the rambling lanes of the old quarter. By day,
the pretty shops and stores buzz with activity, and by night, locals and visitors enjoy
strolling through the narrow streets, stopping off at one or two of the wine taverns.
There are many to choose from and all offer a cosy and convivial atmosphere.

INDEPENDENT TRAVELLERS 2015 | SIGHTSEEING IN MAINZ
St. Stephen’s Church – Chagall windows
With 200,000 visitors a year, St. Stephen’s Church is a major attraction in Mainz. Tourists
from all corners of the globe make the trip up Stephansberg hill to see the luminous blue
stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall (1887 – 1985). The exquisite windows were created
by the Jewish artist from 1978 onwards as a symbol of Jewish-Christian solidarity.
Magenza – Jewish Mainz
Mainz is a leading centre for the Jewish faith in Germany. It is one of the three German cities
known collectively as SchUM and is among the oldest Jewish communities in central Europe.
A thousand eventful years of Jewish history have left behind cultural and architectural legacies in ‘Magenza’: the old Jewish Judensand cemetery, for example, is one of the oldest burial
sites in Europe. The new synagogue, built in 2010 on the site where the main synagogue
once stood, provides an architectural contrast to this.
Mainz State Museum
The origins of the State Museum can partly be traced back to a donation made by
Napoleon in 1803, making this one of the oldest museums in Germany. It is home
to the most important art collection in Rhineland-Palatinate. As well as Roman stone
monuments and prehistoric and early historic artefacts from the Middle Rhine, the
museum’s holdings include paintings, sculptures and arts and crafts from the Middle
Ages to the present day.
Kunsthalle art gallery
The Kunsthalle art gallery at Mainz’s former customs port is a contemporary art venue
that mounted its first exhibition in 2008. Positions reflecting the modern art scene are
presented in installations, solo exhibitions and group exhibitions on specific themes.
Exhibitions, events and projects for the 2015 reformation theme | INDEPENDENT TRAVELLERS 2015
Turbulent times,
then and now
The period that culminated in 1517 with the age of the Reformation is not as distant from our own times as we might think. More topical than ever before are the issues of war and peace, of money and the economy, and of heaven and hell that occupied the minds of
people in the Early Modern Age. In 2015, in the run-up to the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, Mainz’s Gutenberg Museum, State
Museum, Cathedral Museum and Protestant Church are marking these turbulent times with a series of exhibitions. The RhinelandPalatinate contribution to the Luther decade is thereby establishing a link between the age of the Reformation and the changes we are
seeing in society today.
On the 8th day God created the cloud
The Reformation as a media event in words and pictures
Luther, his followers and his adversaries all exploited the opportunities presented
by the media of their day. Book-printing had made knowledge accessible for everyone – a precursor to today’s cloud. The Reformation is presented here as a media
event. Three themed exhibitions trace biblical images of nudity and fashion, friend
and foe, angels and devils, their portrayal and their moral positioning right up to
the present day.

Knight! Death! Devil?
Franz von Sickingen and the Reformation
Franz von Sickingen waged wars as a rebel knight but also championed humanism
and the ideas of the Reformation. This fascinating historical character is the focus of an
exhibition that features numerous high-calibre loan items.

A cry for justice
Life along the Middle Rhine on the eve of the Reformation
This exhibition chronicles the hopes and fears of pre-Reformation times. The
expectation that the Apocalypse was nearing, people’s economic awakening and
their cry for social justice are reflected in a series of everyday objects, documents
and works of art from the time around 1500.

If payment is made by cheque or by means of bank transfer from
outside Germany, the invoice amount will be increased to include
any bank charges applied.
2.4. mainzplus CITYMARKETING GmbH reserves the right to vary
advertised prices which have been confirmed with the booking
for objectively justifiable and substantive reasons which were not
foreseeable at the time of booking, by the amount justified by the
circumstances, provided there is more than four months between
the customer receiving the travel confirmation and the agreed date
of travel. In the event of an adverse change in the package price,
the customer will be informed immediately, and no later than three
weeks prior to travel. In the event of a price increase in excess of
5 per cent, the customer is entitled to withdraw from the contract
within 10 days without charge.
2.5. The obligations of mainzplus CITYMARKETING GmbH ensue
exclusively from the content of the travel confirmation in conjunction with the brochure valid at the time of travel, subject to all
notices and explanations contained within the brochure.
2.6. If the trip/travel arrangement is materially hindered, jeopardised or impaired as a result of force majeure which was unforeseeable at the time the contract was concluded, both mainzplus
CITYMARKETING GmbH and the customer are entitled to terminate
the travel contract. If the travel contract is terminated, mainzplus
CITYMARKETING GmbH may demand reasonable compensation
for the travel services already provided or which are required to
end the trip/travel arrangement.
2.7. Any claims by the customer against mainzplus CITYMARKETING
GmbH based on failure to provide the trip/travel arrangement or
failure to do so in accordance with the terms of the contract must
be lodged within one month of the contractual end of the trip/
travel arrangement. The customer’s right to make a claim of this
kind lapses after one year.
3. Ticket prices and advance sales
3.1. No commission is payable on the prices quoted.
3.2. Children, students, trainees, senior citizens, the unemployed
and those serving community or military service receive a discount
only on specially designated events. Disabled people (with an 80
per cent or greater disability) receive a discount of 50 per cent upon
production of a valid ID card. The companion of a person with a
100 per cent disability receives a discount of 50 per cent upon
production of a valid ID card. Wheelchair users are granted free
entry. Companions of wheelchair users pay full price.
3.3. Advance sales generally run up until the day of the event at the
advance booking price plus booking fee. After that, tickets can only
be purchased on the door at evening box office prices. For sell-out
events there is no obligation to reserve ticket allocations for sale
on the door.
3.4. Tickets reserved for sale on the door are sold at the evening
box office price.
4. Cancellation/postponement of events
4.1. Tickets can be exchanged or refunded if an event is postponed
or cancelled. In such an event, the customer must return the ticket
to the event organiser or booking office where he/she purchased
the ticket no later than one month after the scheduled date of the
event.
4.2. There is no entitlement to return purchased tickets if the
event is relocated to another venue in the local vicinity (Mainz
metropolitan area) for organisational reasons.
5. Limitation of liability
5.1. The statutory and contractual liability of mainzplus
CITYMARKETING GmbH and of its agents – with the exception
of contractual liability under a travel contract (clause 5.2.) – is
excluded for culpably caused loss, in as far as the loss was
not caused by intentional or grossly negligent acts or omissions;
this does not apply to loss arising from death, physical injury or
damage to health, or to culpable breaches of essential conditions
of the contract (cardinal duties). If essential conditions of the
contract are breached as a result of circumstances other than
wilful intent or gross negligence, liability will be limited to the loss
which mainzplus CITYMARKETING GmbH foresaw as a possible
consequence of breach of contract at the time the contract was
formed or which it ought to have foreseen, taking account of
the circumstances of which it was aware, or ought to have been
aware. The same applies in the case of grossly negligent conduct
of persons engaged to assist in the performance of obligations
(not senior managers), other than in connection with essential
conditions of the contract, and in the case of death, physical injury
or damage to health.
5.2. If a travel contract exists, the contractual liability of mainzplus
CITYMARKETING GmbH will be limited to three times the price of
the package,
a) so far as the loss has not been caused by intentional or grossly
negligent acts or omissions, or
b) s o far as mainzplus CITYMARKETING GmbH is responsible
for a loss incurred by the traveller due solely to fault on the
part of a supplier of services.
6. Right of cancellation and return
6.1. Insofar as mainzplus CITYMARKETING GmbH offers services
in the leisure events sector, in particular in the form of tickets for
events and in the form of travel events, no distance-selling contract
exists pursuant to section 312b (3) no. 6 of the German Civil Code
(BGB). This means the right of cancellation and return within a
two-week period does not apply.
6.2. Every ticket order is immediately binding upon confirmation,
thereby committing the purchaser to accept and pay for the tickets
ordered.
6.3. If a travel contract exists (clause 1.3.), the customer may cancel
the contract at any time up to the point of travel. The date of cancellation is deemed to be the date on which the notice of cancellation
is received by mainzplus CITYMARKETING GmbH. Customers
are strongly advised to give written notice of cancellation. If the
customer cancels the travel contract, mainzplus CITYMARKETING
GmbH may demand reasonable compensation for the arrangements made before cancellation and expenses that it incurred.
In calculating compensation, possible alternative uses of the travel
service will be considered.
The cancellation charges are per person and are based on
the price of the package:
Up to 42 days before departure: 10 %
41-21 days before departure:
60 %
20-2 days before departure:
80 %.
One day before the departure date
or in the event of a no-show: 100 %.
The customer is at liberty to show that mainzplus CITYMARKETING
GmbH did not incur a loss or that the loss incurred was substantially less than the fixed charge. A change in the booking (change
of date, accommodation, etc.) is deemed to be cancellation and
is subject to the aforementioned cancellation provisions.
