Here you have the most popular news! On March 11th Japan was hit by an enormous earthquake that triggered a deadly tsunami in the country's north part. The earthquake, Japan's largest ever, hit about 230 miles northeast of Tokyo. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issues warnings for Russia, Taiwan, Hawaii, Indonesia, the Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, Australia, and the west coasts of the U.S.A. , Mexico, Central America, and South America. Cooling systems in one of the reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station failed shortly after the earthquake, causing a nuclear crisis. On April 29th one million people lined in the streets, half a million gather in front of Buckingham Palace, and two billion tuned in via television or computer to see Kate Middleton marry Prince William. Middleton received rave reviews for wearing a modern, but restrained wedding dress designed by Sarah Burton, the creative director for the late Alexander McQueen. On June 5th Li Na, a 29-year-old from China, won the French Open women's championship. She beat last year's winner, Francesca Schiavone to become the first player (male or female) from Asia to win a Grand Slam singles crown. Rafael Nadal, of Spain, beat rival Roger Federer to take the men's crown for the sixth time. 5 On July 23rd the award-winning, internationally known singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse was found dead in her apartment in London. The cause of death was not immediately known but one thing is sure, we’ll miss her talent and her special voice a lot. On October 20th Libya's interim government announced that Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi was killed by rebel troops in Surt, his hometown. Three days later Libya officially declared its liberation for Qaddafi and began the process of electing a government and creating a constitution. We have had a special year full of good and bad news but one thing is for sure, if we want a better place to live in, we’ll have to make a change within ourselves. 6 Now what? I strongly believe that each individual can make it that way by working on their education and other areas that will help them have the necessary tools to get what they really want for their future. As regards education, we can see that all the graduates at our school “Lujan de los Patriotas” are going to be successful people in their lives for many reasons. Firstly, it is clear that the people who study at this school are receiving a very good education from the best teachers who not only teach curricular subjects, but also extracurricular subjects that will help the pupils become well educated youngsters. An example of this is the fact that the school organizes a lot of activities to discover the creative talents of the boys and girls who study here. You can find plays, music shows, art galleries and other activities that the teenagers get involved in and enjoy doing. As a conclusion, I can say that our future is promising since we have received an excellent education in the academic subjects as well as in the creative ones and therefore we have the tools to create a successful future. 8 The best and the worse By Marisel Roncaglia, Clarisa Capetto, Yamila Catalfamo and Gastón D’Adamo When asked, most people agree that technology is the best thing that ever happened to them. They are proud to say that it helps in every daily task. Sending e-mails, watching a movie, even washing clothes are everyday jobs made a lot easier thanks to technology. But some people may disagree. They think tech is driving society to become useless. None of them are totally right or totally wrong. As everything else, technology has its advantages and its disadvantages. First of all, technology has turned lots of “impossible actions” into “everyday activities”. Probably, the best two examples are communication and travelling. Let’s go back to the ancient Rome. Delivering a message from the city centre to a nearby village could take hours. Now, in present time, one just needs to pick up a phone and dial a number, and in matter of seconds, you will be talking with your partner in real time, just as if he/she were right in front of you. Travelling across the country was also a big issue back then. Here in Argentina, having to go from Jujuy all the way to Buenos Aires was a whole adventure, which took many months. Now, using airplanes, anyone can make the same trip in less than 2 hours. Back then, before medicinal drugs were invented, people’s life expectation was of about 40 to 50 years. Nowadays, this expectation has risen up to 80 years. A lot of incurable diseases have become treatable with the arrival of pills and injections. These are just a how technology itself. it is But not good. Tech few examples of has changed life everything has about created dependency on the equipment needed to do everything. The best example is, once Mobile again, phones “must-have” Nowadays, for there communication. have become everyday a life. are mobile phones that do everything: you can take pictures, read the news, shoot a video, send and receive emails, check your agenda, and so much more. Now, when the cell phone gets lost, hysteria instantly arrives. People find themselves lost, disoriented, totally 9 stuck in time. The same thing happens when people miss a bus or plane. They get angry and their agendas get literally destroyed. This also happens in the medicinal universe. At the same time penicillin was discovered, cocaine was discovered. At first it had medicinal purposes, but later people addicted found to that the individuals drug. If become they are overdosed, cocaine can kill them. There are tons of examples about bad or good uses of technology, but the idea remains the same every time: Too much of it is dangerous, and avoiding it makes everything a lot harder. So to sum up, we are in favour of a well-measured use of technology. 10 Bariloche experience By Mariana Tropeano, Berenise Michelena, Natalia Zavala, Christian Lopez Cámera and Johana Rodriguez The graduation trip that takes place in San Carlos de Bariloche is expected by teenagers, and it is done during the last year of high school in order to celebrate the graduation of the group. A lot of preparation is required: choosing the company that the group will hire and the organization of different activities that will help the students save money. Apart from being a trip that requires a lot of preparation, teenagers really look forward to it and it becomes an unforgettable trip and experience. First of all, during this trip, teenagers from different schools can meet and get together during ten days, sharing the hotel, different activities, lunch and dinner and nights at nightclubs. During the tours that are made, teenagers can appreciate the wonderful landscape of San Carlos de Bariloche. At “Punto Panorámico” people can see all the city, and when they visit “los Siete Lagos” (Nahuel Huapi – Correntoso – Espejo –Escondido – Villarino – Falkner y Machónico) they can take photos and visit the most beautiful lakes at San Carlos de Bariloche. On the other hand, teenagers go, each night, to different nightclubs (By passRocket- Grisu- Genux- Pacha- Cerebro) in order to have fun with their friends and meet new people. Apart from what was said before, we must highlight that some teenagers may have a lot of problems with drugs and alcohol, and during this trip those problems may become more evident. Unfortunately, their addiction may affect their health negatively and may prevent them from enjoying this amazing trip. The lack of rest is very harmful for the teenagers, and because of that and the amount of activities they do, students can suffer from some diseases. These 11 problems are the reason why the students cannot go to some places or be part of some of the activities planned. Another issue that we want to address is that the prices of some products, such as chocolates and alcohol, are really high. Shops take advantage of what teenagers look for and raise the prices of the products they offer. All things considered, we can add as a conclusion that this experience at San Carlos de Bariloche, apart from the expenses that the trip requires and the effort that the students and their families do, is very important for teenagers, because after this experience, relationships among them become stronger, they meet new people and amazing memories from what they do during this trip will be in their minds for ever. 12 NEW WAYS: THE PLAY By Brian De Donato and Tomas Fusco This play consists of several stories of young people in their senior year at high school who face the situation of making important decisions for their future lives as adults. Each character goes through a conflict. On the one hand, we have Peter, a popular and athletic boy who has a loving relationship with Juliet. This relationship becomes complicated because Peter doesn’t show much interest in her, and this affects their relationship so much that she ends up breaking up with him. Peter also argues with Lucy, who is tired of his arrogant attitude and both have a verbal confrontation at outside a bar. Peter's attitude is partly caused by the constant absence of his parents at home as they travel a lot for work. A talk with his grandmother makes Peter aware of the importance of having projects in life and of the need to fight for them. After that talk, Peter starts to relate much better with the people around him. He then looks for an opportunity to apologize to Juliet and Lucy. Juliet is a material girl. This way of being is because of her mother. After the argument with Peter, she becomes aware of reality, of what she really is and what she truly aims. All this leads to a profound change and consequently, she argues with her mom, who doesn’t understand her. As evidence of this change, she asks her father to support her and to help her organize her birthday party so as to get closer to her classmates. Lucy is a sweet girl, very clever and Nick's best friend. Her parents support what she does and what she chooses for her future. Nick is the typical nerd, his best friend is Lucy, he likes playing the guitar and he is very attracted to music in general. He also dreams of one day becoming a famous rock star. Nick's father is a lawyer and wants him to follow his steps in the future. Far from that dream, Nick wants to 13 show his father his love for music, so during a free class at school, Nick plucks up courage, phones him and invites him to a concert. This concert is truly a talent show in which he will participate with his own band. Nick shows his father his excellent guitar skills and makes his father change his mind, accept his decision and give him all his support. It was written by J. K Rowling. These novels are a great success at the cinemas, too. This last part is about Harry Potter’s fight with Voldemort, because “one could be alive if the other lives”. At the beginning of the last novel, Harry went away from Hogwarts to destroy the different parts of Voldemort`s soul.. But in this adventure, Harry was not alone because his friends Hermione and Ron were with him. However, nothing was easy for Harry. At the end he had fight against all kinds of beasts like Dementors, giants, and others to save his magic community. In this book readers will find the last and the most important fight against Lord Voldemort in Hogwarts. All Harry`s friends fight against the terrible Voldemort. Some characters will be very important to defeat Voldemort. Also an important friend’s relationship is broken because an unexpected thing happened. But remember in this movie, nothing is what it seems. The book was published in July, 2007 but the movie was released in July, 2011. The book sold 15 million copies in the first 24 hours following its release, including more than 11 million in the U.S. and UK alone. Also this book broke sales records. I thoroughly recommend Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Readers will be entertained with the book because they are kept in suspense until the very end of it, and remember in this book nothing is what it seems. 15 ART AND MUSIC ARE INTERESTING SUBJECTS TO LEARN By Ines Taborda Art and extraordinary Music subjects to are learn because most of the students love these areas. In music, students learn how to play the guitar or how to sing. In Art, students learn how to draw or paint. In my opinion, these subjects are very hard to learn but really interesting for the academic training. Firstly, students need to pay attention when they are learning how to play the guitar because learning how to put the fingers in the correct place and how to recognize a chord is very difficult. For example, the teacher shows how to put the fingers in the third fret but some students cannot put the fingers in the correct place and then they need a little help to do this. Secondly, Learning the chords well needs that the students practise at home. If they do not practise the chords well, they will not play the guitar very well. That is because chords are not easy to learn. Finally, art is easier because it doesn't need so much practise, you only need to pay attention in class. Students like this subject because it is not complicated. They think that art is just drawing and painting on paper. But you must pay attention to what the teacher asks. If the teacher asks: “Finish it at home”, you have to do this because if you do not, your mask will go down. All things considered, it seems to me that Music is the hardest subject of the two for the students because they must study all classes and in their houses while art students must have their work complete at school day after day. 16 THE MUSIC SHOW By Ramiro Vega At Lujan de los Patriotas school, there was a music show in November this year. The performance was made basically by first, second, and third year students, but a group of fourth and fifth year students helped them, too. The leader of this show was Mr. Rodrigo Chavez, the music teacher at our school. The show took place on November 16th, 2011. The school authorities assigned a new music theme. It was different from previous concerts. This time, students learnt a lot about National Rock. Hundreds of students between 13 and 16 (as we can see in the photo) sang songs like “Sin Gamulan”, “Canción de cuna”, “Donde las aguilas se atreven”, etc. The older students worked supporting the younger ones in the backstage of this incredible show. In the sample, the students sang 28 songs. Despite some initial technical problems with the microphones, the show was really exciting because of the superb performance of all the people involved. Many people came to the Music Show, and they were really amazed. Many even commented that the work was excellent. I highly recommend participating in this show. It’s incredible! 17 ARGENTINE SPORTS By Nicolás Gonzalez, Guido Genovese, Rubén Torres and Nicolás Serra America’s Football Cup 2011 is only played by South American teams. This tournament shows all the South American football teams in a close competition showing which team may be the best of the continent. It was held in Argentina last June. People were excited because they had never seen a tournament like that. The winner was Uruguay. The national government was engaged with the tournament and it built very modern stadiums in different cities of the country. The stadiums which lent their facilities made profits out of it, they could enlarge them, their changing rooms, broadcast booths, and the streets near the stadium were revamped. “Gimnasia de Jujuy” club, for example, expanded its capacity to 5000 people, refurbished their cabins, built lifts and now everybody can enjoy very modern changing rooms. At last, the streets were paved, so people can easily get to the stadium. In Córdoba, the sales increased in the sport shops. The hotels were completely full. They were occupied by tourists or sports teams. We have to say that the local teams had some problems because in some cases, Argentine players couldn’t use their facilities because they were being used by the foreign players. These things happened in Jujuy, for example, where the field was used by the Bolivian players who played most of their games. We think that our country made a lot of profit with this tournament by marketing, there was a strong growth and profit because of the tourism. Therefore, we think that our country should organize this type of tournaments, because it encourages people to do sports. On the other hand, Basketball also had an important event in Argentina. It was the tournament to get into the London Olympics. The audience wasn`t as massive as in football, but people enjoyed this championship that was held in Mar del Plata. 18 The positive things that happened with this tournament were that Mar del Plata city benefitted from tourism. There were more participants than fans. Teams like Brazil, Uruguay and Venezuela were the ones that brought more people. The hotels were full of Brazilians, Uruguayans and Venezuelans. However Puerto Rico, Cuba and Chile (despite being a neighbouring country) didn`t bring many fans. Talking at a sporting level, we must say that Argentina got the first place, playing the last game against Brazil. Several players recovered their level in this tournament, they were Scola, the team captain, and Manuel Ginobili the most well known player in the Argentine basketball team. They were the leaders of this group of warriors. If we have to talk about something negative that this tournament brought, we can say that the local people of the cities where this championship took place were angry because there were people everywhere. They felt they couldn`t do much about this situation. Finally, we can say that America’s Cup was a more important event than the Basketball championship, but still the last one was a huge event as well. 19 Teens’ Destination: Barilo! By Ornella Dinatale San Carlos de Bariloche is a city in the province of Río Negro, Argentina, situated on the foothills of the Andes, surrounded by lakes (Nahuel Huapi, Gutiérrez Lake, Moreno Lake and Mascardi Lake) and mountains (Tronador, Cerro Catedral, Cerro López). It lies 770 metres above sea level and 1650 km from Buenos Aires (Capital District). The city has a permanent population of 108,205 according to the 2010 census. It offers excellent tourist facilities and services to 1,000,000 persons who visit it every year. It is famous for skiing but also great for sight-seeing, water sports, trekking and climbing. Another claim to fame is its Swiss-like atmosphere and its chocolate boutiques. Look for the St Bernard dogs on display for tourists. For many, Bariloche is winter, snow and skiing. But there is much more than that: also known as the "Argentinean Switzerland", this city and its surrounding mountains and lakes are unquestionable tourist attractions all year round. Bariloche is one of the main tourist destinations in Argentina. The Cerro Catedral is one of the most important ski resorts in Argentina and it is visited by more and more enthusiasts of winter sports every season. In summer (=European and American winter!) Bariloche offers nearly every kind of adventure tourism. You can visit to the Cathedral Nuestra Señora del Nahuel Huapi. The building was built by architect Alexander Bustillo and it was never finished. Nowadays its access is used as a chapel. It has got interesting displays of religious subjects relating to Patagonia. Then, after passing Puerto San Carlos (a place for embarking in lake trips where there are also places to eat and attractions for kids) you arrive at the Civic Center. This is the most representative spot in the city. 20 Teens from all over Argentina go to Bariloche on their school trip to celebrate with their classmates their last year at High school. That is why Bariloche features a lot of sophisticated dance clubs. As a conclusion we can say that for a lot of tourists, Bariloche is a really great option to choose from. It is ideal for all ages and it is a destination that you will never forget. 21 Cyrano: the plot By Gladys Contrafatto Our story begins in Bergerac early in the 17th century. A brave captain called Cyrano lives in this small French town. He is the best with his sword and famous far and wide for courage, his poetic skills and....... the size of his nose. Since he was a child his heart has been devoted to his friend Roxanne, the Duke's daughter. In spite of this, Cyrano has never told her what he truly feels. He has always thought that Roxanne, as beautiful as she is, could never fall in love with a man possessing such a nose. The Duke has instructed Madame Ciboulette to find a suitable candidate for his daughter to marry. When Christian de Neuvillette arrives at Bergerac to join Cyrano's army, Madam Ciboulette decides that this young, handsome soldier is the perfect husband for Roxanne. 22 Although Christian is good-looking, Roxanne is not attracted to him so Madam Ciboulette comes out with a plan. This plan is based on a lie which she believes will join the couple. Being unaware of Cyrano's feelings, she tells him that Roxanne is deeply in love with Christian and that he must tell this to the young soldier. When Christian is told this lie, he quickly believes it and becomes interested in Roxanne as she is not only beautiful but also rich. As he knows Roxanne is very romantic, he asks Cyrano for help to write her a poem. Feeling heart-broken, Cyrano puts aside his feelings and gives Christian one of h is own poems. Roxanne, who wasn't really interested in Christian at first, starts changing her mind as she is moved by the love letter. With Cyrano's help, Christian soon makes Roxanne fall in love with him but Cyrano feels they are not being honest with her so he stops giving his poems to Christian. As Christian is willing to marry Roxanne at any cost, he is not satisfied with this decision and steals Cyrano's book of poems so as to carry out his own mischievous plan. Soon the marriage is announced and Cyrano's heart is filled with sorrow. His beloved Roxanne is being deceived by Christian's greed. The ending is near and love must fight to prevail... 23 Uruguay leaves Argentina out of the Copa America By Tomas Fusco Sergio Batista's team suffered an early elimination of the Copa America. Argentina and Uruguay were the top contenders to win the tournament. What started as a great illusion was diluted in an extraordinary way. Argentina came to the crossing of the quarter-final tie with Uruguay after its first two games against Bolivia and Colombia to end with a big win against Costa Rica. On the other hand, the "Celeste" reached the knockout stages after two wins and a draw. What was planned as the best match of America exceeded the Copa met and expectations. The whistle was blown and the game started with an Argentina team that went out to get the game from the first minute playing with Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuain as their top references in attack, but with many shortcomings in the defense, so much so that the Uruaguayan attackers Diego Forlan and, especially, Luis Suarez managed to complicate Argentina constantly. After 3 minutes of the beginning of the first time, Uruguay was able to get ahead thanks to a goal from Diego Perez and from then on, the game changed completely, Argentina reacted and began to get hold of the ball and at 18 minutes of the half, there was a tie thanks to Gonzalo Higuain and the best player, Lionel Messi. In addition, the match was mostly played in the midfield but there was another great figure to mention: the goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. The teams had to play overtime due to the result. And finally they had to shoot penalties.. to end with Argentina disqualified. To conclude, the outcome of this was that Argentina’s fans were very disappointed and the coach, Sergio Batista, was fired. 24 PLAYING TIME By Sabrina Casa 1) Find the names of five characters in the play New Ways AKFEJUIHGRUIGHEFLUCYTDREWON JEIOGNICKUQWIOPREWPRGENPALN GFJIEOHGREHGNQPOWETIYDBENFG OJVNAWIEGRLBOWNMSVHYWTIEW KSHTIFFANYFYGTBNSUFYDESEHGK COSNDFIUHGIUSDTHIENDPAQRETH NIEDHFIGUJULIETUGIYFHJSOERFY 2) 25 Editors: Malena Faes y Camila Marcolin Computer assistant: Agustin Pereda Project leader: Gladys Contrafatto Writers: Camila del Vecchio, Agostina Ragone, Lucas Borrazas, Camila Marón, Emiliano Babrique, Federico Scorza, Gabriel Soya, Gustavo Micó, Marisel Roncaglia, Clarisa Capetto, Yamila Catalfamo, Gastón D’Adamo, Mariana Tropeano, Berenise Michelena, Natalia Zavala, Christian Lopez Cámera, Johana Rodriguez, Nicolas Gonzalez, Guido Genovese, Rubén Torres, Nicolas Serra, Brian De Donato, Tomás Fusco, Yazmina Marcella, Ramiro Vega, Inés Taborda, Ornella Dinatale, Sabrina Casa.
