Our Bishop’s Appeal goal for this year is $56,000.00, the same as last year. I am asking
every parish family to please make a gift to the Appeal over the next 10 month period to
help meet this goal. Take a minute and fill out your envelope today and place it in the
collection basket. Also, on your way out watch the video presented in the front of the Church
and see the many organizations in our Diocese funded by this program.

Discernment
Ignatius, thinking about “discernment of Spirits” as he would have called it recognized that we are often caught up in our feelings
between “consolation” as a positive, and “desolation” as a negative. God may use both the positive “movements of our souls” as
well as negative ones to communicate his will to us. Actually for Ignatius the negative is easier to discern than the positive, given
that the Devil is perfectly capable of arranging pleasing sensations and lining up circumstances, and these can lead us astray.
Clearly discernment is not a simple matter, and Ignatius’ insight is that when things fall into line easily and in a pleasing way, we
must beware because that doesn’t necessarily mean that God wants you to move in that direction. An example would be of a man
who has recently gone through a divorce and is now lonely. The circumstances of the divorce were painful and the man is looking
for solace, which readily comes to hand from a woman he sees daily at his office. She seems to “understand him” and to be open to
his advance, which out of his loneliness he proceeds to follow. They get along famously, and he becomes convinced that this is the
one for him and it must be God’s will for them to “get together.” Ignatius would counsel caution in such a situation because firstly
it is too neat and tidy, and secondly it is just as likely that the Devil is trying to ensnare these lonely hearts into sin: namely
adultery. But “it feels so right” is the man’s defense, but this is not discernment it is choosing by whim.

Ignacio, pensando en “discernimiento de espiritus” como el lo habria llamado, reconoció que nosotros muchas veces nos envolvemos en
nuestros sentimientos entre “consolación” como un positivo y “desolación” como un negativo. Dios puede usar ambos el positivo
“movimientos de nuestras almas” igual que los negativos para comunicarnos su voluntad. Actualmente para Ignacio, el negativo es mas
fácil de discernir que el positivo, dado que el Diablo esta completamente capacitado en arreglar sensaciones agradables y en poner
circumstancias en nuestros caminos y estas nos pueden hacer desviar. Claramente discernimiento no es una materia fácil y el instinto de
Ignacio es que cuando las cosas se cuadran fácilmente y de una manera agradable, nosotros debemos de estar muy cautelosos porque eso
no quiere decir necesariamente que Dios quiere que se muevan en esa dirección. Un ejemplo pudiera ser de un hombre que recientemente
ha pasado por un divorcio y ahora se siento solo o solitario. Las circumstancias del divorcio fueron muy dolorosas y el hombre esta
buscando consuelo, lo cuál viene en forma de una mujer que él ve diariamente en su oficina. Ella parece “entenderlo” y esta dispuesta a
recibir su insinuación, que de su soledad el procede a seguir. Ellos se llevan muy bien, y él se convence que está es para él y que fué la
voluntad de Dios de “haberlos unido.”Ignacio daria un consejo de cautela en esta situación porque primeramente esta demasiado puro y
ordenado y segundo esta por seguro que el Diablo esta tratando de engañar estos corazones solitarios en el pecado:particularmente al
adulterio. Pero “se siente tan bien” es la defensa del hombre, pero esto no es discernimiento es selección por sentimiento.

SCHOLARSHIPS —Since 2007, Council #7467 of the Knights of Columbus
and Branch #432 Italian Catholic Federation of Immaculate heart of Mary
Branch have sponsored scholarships for graduating high school seniors. The
minimum amount of the award is $1,000. Eligible candidates must be
registered and active members of IHM Parish and completed and submitted
their applications. Applications are available from now and are due by
APRIL 1, 2014. Applications can be picked up from De La Salle High School,
Carondelet High School, local public high school Career Center webpage or
contact Mr. Smith at [email protected]. Winners will be notified by
MAY 13, 2014.

“It’s Lenten Fish Fry time again!! The Knights of
Columbus will be cooking fish dinners every
Friday during Lent. It started March 7th.,and
will be for six consecutive Fridays, the Knights’
chefs will be serving deep fried fish, French fries, coleslaw and a
beverage for $13.00. (What a deal and it only costs $9.00 for kids 12
and under). Desserts are provided by the Crafty Quilters. Hours are
4 to 7pm in the Hall or use our drive-up for fast take-out service.”

If for any reason you are unable to attend Mass and would like to
receive the Host at home, please call the Parish Office. / Si por

BAPTISMS / BAUTISMOS:
Parents must complete the Baptism Registration form
available in the parish office at least two months in advance
and attend the required baptism class. You must provide a
copy of the child’s birth certificate. Godparents may also
attend the same class or attend one at their local parish and
obtain a completion certificate. When choosing your child’s
Godparents, please bear in mind that they must be baptized,
confirmed, receive communion regularly in the Church and,
if married, they must be married in the Catholic Church.
There can be NO exceptions to these rules.
Los padres tienen que llenar la forma de Registro para
Bautizos disponible en la oficina parroquial por lo menos
dos meses antes y asistir a la clase de
bautismos requerida. Usted tiene que traer una copia del
certificado de nacimiento del bebé. Los Padrinos también
tienen que asistir a la misma clase o asistir a una en la
parroquia local de ellos y obtener un
certificado al terminar la clase. Cuando escoja a los Padrinos

EDUCATED ANGELS
Jaime H. Velasco is the Founder and President of “Educated Angels.” This is an
organization that is open to every student that is having a difficult time understanding
a specific subject, but most importantly accommodating the needs of students that are
unable to afford a tutor. The Group meets every Monday at IHM from 4pm to
5:30pm in Halls A,B and C. For more information, please contact Jaime Velasco at
