Foothill Focus THE Newsletter of the El Dorado Camera Club Vol. 14, No. 2 Dedicated to Sharing, Learning, and Enjoying Photography Summer 2004 Asilomar By Lori Wahl S IX MONTHS AGO Marilyn Hrobsky asked me if I wanted to join her for a photography weekend at Asilomar. I had never heard of Asilomar, or the conference being held there, but said “yes” anyway. On the weekend of March 19-21, we traveled to Pacific Grove and stayed at the wonderful conference grounds run by the California State Park system. It is literally on the beach between Monterey and Carmel. The buildings and guest rooms are nestled among the pine and cypress trees. I couldn’t ask for a more beautiful place. The conference was a PSA photography program put on by the Yerba Buena and Gold Rush chapters of PSA. EDCC is a member of the Gold Rush chapter. There were 10 Still life reflected in Mylar photographic presentations and a photo set-up lab during the two days. The photo lab included staged, lighted glass reflecting colors and Mylar reflections. The presenters were award winning, active members of PSA competitions. They came from as far away as Massachusetts to present to the 130 people attending. The presentations were conducted through narrated (or instructional) multi-projector slide or computer-based images. A favorite presentation of mine was the one given by Truman Holtzclaw (a past judge for EDCC) who took us along Highway 395 from Bridgeport, through Bodie, Mono Lake, and all the way south to Cerro Gordo. These were wonderful landscape images and great examples of wide angle shooting. Another presenter from Washington State took us to the Oregon Coast and showed us his collection of images from the past 20 years, capturing the Waves of Kiwanda. This is a place southwest of Tillamook, Oregon, that has spectacular wave formations along a sheer cliff that rise up over 100 feet in the air. These waves were captivating for me. We also had presentations on the Arctic and Antarctic, nature photography, photo journalism, Ancient Greece, and a trip aboard an icebreaker to South Georgia. (Remember Ernest Shackleton?) This was an annual gathering of the two PSA chapters. They have been meeting there for the past 17 years. My only regret was that the presentations kept us from enjoying the beauty of the coastline. Time to schedule photography sessions between the meals and meetings was just too limited. I think our club should plan its own outing to the area—focusing on photography only. It was a perfect place. EDCC New Members Welcome to our new members! Be sure to add their contact information to your EDCC Directory: Cathy Adamson P.O. Foothill Focus Summer 2004 PHOTO SAFARI TO WEST SACRAMENTO Only three EDCC members were able to attend our May 1 Photo Safari for an evening photo shoot in Sacramento. The plan had been to photograph the state capitol building, but the three photographers decided to head out to West Sacramento to shoot some scenes for possible submission to the City of West Sacramento’s Annual Photo Contest, “15 Days in May.” The annual contest awards cash prizes to amateur photographers who capture the city’s best images. Photographers are encouraged to take a picture of their choice, looking for fascinating faces, places, landscapes, or landmarks, as long as the subject is inside the West Sacramento city limits. Contest photos can only be taken between the dates of May 1 and May 15. Entries must be submitted by May 15. Visit their website at http://www.ci.westsacramento.ca.us/calendar/events/15dim/ for more information and to see current and previous winners. The bulk of our income came from competitions and dues. Most of our moneys were spent for printing and mailing of our newsletters. Membership dues are due annually in January. However, not all 2004 dues have been received as of the date of this report. As in prior years, most of our competition and dues income will be spent on the newsletters and other mailings to our members. Note: Due to the 10% increase in the cost of stamps, from 34¢ to 37¢, our total mailings expense for 2004 will be higher than 2003. This was, in short, a summary of EDCC’s Income/Expense for 2003 as well as the First Quarter of 2004. — Betty Rotting, Treasurer JOIN US FOR OUR NEXT MEETING MAY 20 Photography of New Zealand By John and Judy Brantner ERA Realty Center 4064 Flying C Road, Suite 19, Cameron Park DRIVING DIRECTIONS: From the Placerville area, drive west on Hwy 50 to the Cambridge Road exit. Page 6 Foothill Focus Summer 2004 What’s In Your Bag? By Lori Wahl A BOUT A YEAR AGO, I was beginning a long dive trip with my first digital camera. I didn’t have a way to save my images from my compact flash cards to a laptop (since I didn’t have one) and burn a CD after each dive day. Instead of buying a laptop for $$$ and worrying about taking it along on a dive boat, I wanted another option. I found just the ticket for my travels in a combination card reader/ storage device. It is called the Nixvue Vista (www.nixvue.com). It is a high-capacity hard disk (20, 30, or 40GB) that allows you to download image files (or any files) from your camera’s storage media. It works with Compact Flash cards, MicroDrives, SmartMedia cards, and Memory Sticks. It can store thousands of high-resolution images that can be printed directly, viewed on a TV monitor, or downloaded to your computer when you return from your trip. It works with a Mac or PC computer through a USB port. You can do file operations with the on-board controls without connecting to a computer. These operations include moving images into different file folders within the Vista’s hard drive, or setting up folders to conduct a slide show on a TV with the unit’s video-out port. ImageTank and accessories Summer 2004 The Vista works on it’s own re-chargeable battery but also uses plug-in current when available. It only weighs 10 ounces and is about the size of a Sekonic light meter. In choosing the Vista, I was very weight conscious since I pack so much gear already, and very security conscious (it goes through airport security without a hitch). I have had the Vista for a year and although I download my images from it to the computer when I return home, I have kept a set of slide show pictures on it for backup and travel anywhere. It is very easy to use. The screen is about the size of a digital camera’s LCD viewing screen, but it does have a zoom-in capability to check the focus and subject matter on the images. I LOVE IT! Having the Vista means I don’t have to buy more than two Compact Flash cards. An added benefit came when my husband bought his new laptop and had to transfer over LOTS of his files from his old computer to the new computer. I just plugged in the Vista to his USB port, performed a click and drag on the folders/files he wanted and off they went to the portable hard drive. The reverse action took them onto his new computer. No installation of software was needed on either computer as they both recognized this USB device as an external hard drive. So…when you’re shopping for something small, portable, and fun, you may want to look at one of these. EDCC member Karen Buckland has a version of Vista from another distributor called the Delkin eFilm PicturePad (www.delkin.com). She has also purchased the firewire adapter for her unit and a USB 2.0 adapter is also available. Another camera club member, Al Rotting, has a portable hard drive from ImageTank (www.imageFoothill Focus Nixvue Vista portable hard drive and card reader tank.com) which stores as many images but doesn’t have a screen to view them. However, it’s half the price of the Vista, which is a very nice feature. Al says, “My 20GB ImageTank ($250.00) works excellently. The battery is very strong; I downloaded and transferred about 2,000 photos and the unit never needed recharging. The charger works off of a car battery or regular household current at 120 or 240 volts (so traveling abroad is no problem). The capacity for JPEG Fine is about 5,000 exposures, in RAW or TIFF you can load about 2,000 shots. A drawback of the ImageTank might be that it does not have an LCD viewing screen, but since there is one on the camera, it is a minor drawback. With the unit and battery in its leather pouch, it's a compact package. It comes with a USB computer cord and a CD with instructions (worthless!!). It's easy to figure out how to work it though.” There are many more brands of portable hard drives on the market today, so shop around. I’m sure you’ll find the one right for you.
