“S
ince today we are celebrating Youth Plege Day, I want
to know who can recite
the Youth Pledge script?” asked by
Indra Bekti on stage to the participant of 28UILD.ID. Some giggled,
some blushed and some pushed
their friends to move forward. Apparently, there were a lot of them
who could not recite the script—
or
even
did
not
know—
about Youth Pledge 28th October
1928, one of the important dates
in the history of Indonesia. Most of
the participants who came to the
event were expatriates and students
from different international schools.
Language barriers could
be a problem. However, some participants who couldn’t speak that
much Bahasa Indonesia still managed to recite the Youth Pledge,
led by Indra Bekti (presenter) and
Kelly Tandiono (model/actress).
Then, they were divided into 11
groups and started the activities.

ber 2014 was conducted for the
fourth time by Habitat for Humanity (HfH) Indonesia. While the last
year event was held around Jakarta area, in this year it was simultanously conducted at 5 branches
of HfH Indonesia, which are Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Medan, and Batam. Jakarta branch is
handling activities in the areas of
Kampung Cimangurang, Desa
Cijayanti, Babakan Madang Subdistrict, Sentul, Bogor, West Java.
Around 180 people signed
up to become a volunteer in building
10 houses and 1 elementary school.
The activities have started from digging the foundation, building the
house column, placing the building blocks, and painting the walls.
“We are very grateful to all
participating schools. We give a
medium to these youth to see what
is going on in the actual place and to
be involved in the activities of helping the society,” said James Tumbuan, National Director of HFH Indonesia. Some of these participating
schools are Binus, Mentari, Ichthus,

Indra Bekti and Kelly
Tandiono also participated in the
activity. Kelly was spotted blending in with the other volunteers
painting the school, while Indra
tried several works, like painting
the house and assembling the
column. They did not mind to get
their hands dirty with soil or paint.
“It is a very
different experience
altogether. We were
involved
directly,
worked,
interacted
with the people in
the community and
the residence who
live in that community. Feels like we have
more meaning as a
human being. That’s
the essence from us
as a social creature.
We need to share, to
care, to give emphaty
to the people who lives
eo
surround us, especially the less fortunate ones. At least, we can give our
time and attention for them, so our
presence can bring them happiness.
Their smiles, their happines, turns
out to be my personal source of energy,” Indra Bekti gave his opinion.
“We have our freedom, independence, and the good life because of the Youth Pledge, too. Now
to be the pioneer in helping others,
and be the active and productive
youth,” he added, closing the interview with several media on that day.
Volunteers were doing
the foundation casting.
Kelly Tandiono painted the elementary school with
other participants. She also brought along her
sibling and friend to be a volunteer.

Encouraging Society to be
Actively Involved

8UILD.ID activity that was held
in RW 01 Pasirhalang Village,
Cisarua district, West Bandung, might be far from the
source of publication, but it actually
deserved to be highlighted. Instead
of inviting volunteers from outside of the village, HFH Indonesia
Bandung Branch encouraged local
young people through youth society (karang taruna). They were invited
and devoted to paint some public
facilities such as mosque (mushola),
neighborhood health center, and
a local Islamic school (madrasa).
On Saturday, October 18,
2014, approximately 35 participants
attended, but then at the end of
the volunteer program, the number of participants decreased to 20
people due to their own errands at
school, college, or jobs that cannot be missed. However, the essence of togetherness to build was
still on. Moreover, the active role
of other members of society have
been clearly showed, like the father
and mother were also heavily involved in preparing the location and
lunch, even residents of other RW
(neighbourhood) also helped them.
Not to mention, Indonesian Armed
Forces (TNI) from local military command (Koramil) also offered help.
Through this activity, it
seems that Habitat has quite successfully changed the passive be-
havior of the community, instead of
passively accepting the help and
watching the development, now
they have become actively involved
for the better living of their village.
“We do not have any other intention but to build our village. Thanks to Habitat that has
awaken and strengthen our intention,” said a member of the Karang
Taruna Desa Pasirhalang (the youth
society of Pasirhalang Village).

n Batam, 42 students from International University of Batam
(UIB) have actively gathered
to involve, volunteer and participate in 28UILD.ID activities
at the Kabil village, Nongsa district. They helped the builders
and family partners to build three
simple houses and drainage for
public facilities in the neighborhood health center (posyandu).
Before heading to the point
of the project and doing some “cargathered under a tent. Some had
their speech from the various

The sun started to rise and
the weather was getting hot. The
volunteers, who were divided into 4
groups, have been gathered in their
own group. There were activities
such as digging the ground, lift the
stone, as well as cut and assemble
the legs of iron columns and foundations. They certainly did not work
without supervision. Some construction supervisor of HFH Indonesia
and craftsman who have been the
in building a house, we usually only
see how it’s been done. It seems
easy, but it’s not as easy as it seems.
But if there is an opportunity sometimes in the future, we hope to help
again” said Nichy (18), one of the UIB
students, while hoeing the ground.
Two of the three houses
they were working on was the contribution of these students. They
managed to raise funds from their
own ways such as donation personally from
aged to collect IDR 60 million to help two families
to have a decent home.

for the participants to relax and
have their lunch box that they personally brought with them. The
activity was resumed again after
Nia Fitria (18), one of the student volunteers shared, “This is an
extraordinary event. A lot of things I
can experience, now I know how to
bind iron with wire. I hope this activity can be carried out continuously
with more partner and coverage”.
Meanwhile, Hendra Asman expressed his commitment
to support this activity. “This is
an outstanding program. Let us
help each other to create a habitable home. For the future, I will
try to involve the government to
take part in this event,” he said.

On that day, Saturday, October 18, 2014, they built two decent
houses for foundation work stages,
from excavation to casting. The volunteer program has started a bit behind schedule due to their own daily routine at home such as cooking,
others, before they can participate.
During the activity, the
young volunteers seemed
very enthusiastic, they
were
not
bothered
by the small
number
of
participants.
Help building

actually a new
experience

who volunteer
themselves
for
the people in their

Working with Passion

here’s always been a different excitement in every building activities. One was the
thing that happened in 28UILD.ID
at Desa Tegalsari, Surabaya. About
32 participants—came from Singapore International Academy (SNA),
Sentuhan Kasih Bangsa Foundation,
and Applied Science and Technology Institute of Surabaya—were divided into 3 house groups. They
were doing different activities, like
assembling the columns, painting wooden frames of the roof,
and making the house foundaence, some a little bit understood.
For newbies, doing a few
minor mistakes were common. One
participant was having this kind of
thing. Her shoes got painted by herself while she was enthusiastically
painting the wood beams for roof
frame which made the other volunteers laughing out loud. The beams
for roof were needed to paint in
order to avoid termites. Another
funny thing happened was some
students yelled, even ran, when
they were digging the soil and
then a lot of cockroaches came out.
Imelda Arief, a student
companion from SNA shared about
28UILD.ID activity. “The weather is
very hot and the site has a narrow
alley. However, we are excited, although the cockroaches attacked
us, one was painting her own shoes,
and another broke the gavel used
to split the stones. But we’re so
pleased to be here to join this event.”
Overall, this activity was
done excitedly by the volunteers,
despite the very hot weather in
the city. One of the home partners
Sulaiman even pleased the volunteers by providing snacks for them.
At the closing ceremony,
home partners and village stakeholders gave their impressions.
“We’re pleased to get the help from
Habitat, which make our home become more comfortable to live and
kids can also study well. Our hope
is the children can be more diligent
and smarter so they can help their
parents,” said Kemisah (55), one of
the home partners. The neighbourhood secretary, Seno, expressed his
proud and how he has been touched
by the support of the volunteers for
the community. He extended many
thanks to Habitat and all participants.

Monday in October is celebrated as World Habitat Day?
They started to celebrate the
World Habitat Day in 1986, as an initiative from United Nation. The purpose is to remind the basic rights
of every human being for a decent
house and to motivate the community to be involved in eliminating poverty housing. “We all have the power
and the responsibility to shape the
future of our cities and towns,” as
written on the UN Habitat website.
To expand the message,
which is inline with the Habitat for
Humanity (HFH) vision, HFH Indonesia Medan Branch together
with North Sumatera Department
of Housing and Landscape, held
with the signing of a banner by the
people who were coming to the

The current decent housing backlog in North Sumatera
is estimated 700,000 units. “The
more people giving attention to
decent houses, the faster poverty
will be eliminated. We need government’s support to push the
legalization of the land tenure,”
