Garden Wildlife - Grey and Red Squirrels
Even though it is far more common
to see a grey squirrel, the red
squirrel (scientific name Sciurus
Vulgaris) is actually native to
Europe, and the UK.
Their fur can range from a warm
reddish-brown in the summer, to
a deep brown, with grey, in the
winter. They always have a cream
underside, a bushy tail and ear
tufts. Squirrels are 4 fingers on
each hand and 5 toes on each foot,
and are either left handed or right
handed when eating a pine cone.
Red squirrels are omnivorous
rodents; with their diet consisting
of foods such as spruce, pine seeds,
acorns, berries, fungi and bark. In
the Autumn, they store surplus food
either just below the ground, or in
gaps in tree trunks.
They live in spherical nests, called
dreys, of approximately 30cm in
diameter. Dreys have frames of
twigs, lined with grass and moss.
They are usually at least 6 meters
off the ground, and found in holes
in trees, or set against the trunk
and branches. It’s common for each
squirrel to have several dreys, over
the space of around 3-7 hectares.
This also aids their escape from any
predators.
Squirrels do not hibernate, but
they do become less active during
the colder months, as they spend
several days at a time in their dreys.
Their mating season is between
January and March, and red
squirrels can have 2 litters a year;
usually in the Spring and Summer.
Infant squirrels are known as
kittens. Litters contain between
10%
off
1 and 6 kittens, and follow a
gestation period of 36-42 days.
Parental care is carried out by the
female, and the young are born
with their eyes closed and without
teeth or hair. After around 10
weeks, the young are ready to leave
the drey.
Squirrels are quite communicative
with each other. They use various
vocalisations and scent marking
to exchange messages with each
other. They have also been found
to use their tails as a signalling
device; twitching it when they feel
uneasy or threatened to alert other
squirrels of potential dangers.
Have you ever followed a squirrel,
or watched them in a park? They
often run quite erratically and
this is actually done on purpose.
Such movements are a deterrent
to potential predators, designed to
shake them off so that the squirrel
can escape.
Squirrels are deemed to be highly
intelligent. They have been known
to put on fake displays of burying
food in order to trick potential
thieves who will believe there to be
a great food source hiding. Whilst
the thief explores the bogus food
site, the squirrel is granted time to
hide the real food when nobody is
looking.
Grey squirrels were brought to the
UK from North America in the
1800’s. Greys are more likely to
be seen as they tend to live lower
down than the red squirrels and are
happy foraging on the ground. They
are also better equipped for the cold
weather, as they tend to carry more
Squirrel - Sciuridae
body fat than the red squirrels.
A law was passed in 1938, banning
further importation of grey
squirrels, as they were found to
be causing damage to commercial
forestry.
Some squirrels are called flying
squirrels. Sadly, they do not
actually fly but in fact glide from
tree to tree. This is possible because
of a membrane that stretches from
their wrist to their ankle. This
membrane allows the squirrel to
glide in the same way that a human
glides with the aid of a parachute.
Squirrels are such incredible
creatures that they are the Native
American symbol for preparation,
trust and thriftiness.

Sudoku dates back to an 18th
Century Swiss mathematician’s
game called ‘Latin Squares.’
The modern Sudoku puzzle as
we know it today was invented
by Howard Garns in 1979 and
it was first published in ‘Dell
Pencil Puzzles and Word Games’
magazine, and was called
‘Number Place.’
This sudoku puzzle contains 6
large triangles. The numbers 1 to
9 must be placed into the cells of
each large triangle. Every line of
any length - even uncontinuous
- must contain every number not
more than once.
Do you think you can complete it?

Blackbeard and Psychological Warfare
The romantic stylings of today’s
films and media show pirates in
many different lights. Men at sea,
plundering trade ships, dropping in
on an island town and cavorting
with the local wenches. Vicious
butchers are a constant theme.
So lets look at a real pirate and see
whether we can find similarities.
Edward Teach, also far more
commonly known as Blackbeard,
was a pirate with a fearsome
visage and reputation. Yet it was
highly uncommon for his ship to
even fire a shot in battle. It was
more psychological warfare. His
ship would be seen and that was
the battle over. Of course, some
would resist and rather than
fight, Blackbeard would simply
remove one of their extremities
(a most logical answer...) He was
not known for any particular
brutality, however. In fact, he was
more interested in valuables and
wives (all 14 of them). His demonic
image was fuelled more by rumours
and his appearance than truth.
It is likely that he came from a
wealthy family. He could read,
write and was found with papers
upon his person at the time of his
death.
Edward Teach started his life at
sea and in 1716 joined the crew of
the well known pirate Benjamin
Hornigold. By 1717 Edward Teach
was given, by Hornigold, command
of his own sloop and together they
wreaked havoc. Later, off of the
island of St. Vincent, the two sloops
closed upon a merchant ship, the
French “Concord”. Teach took this

new ship as his own. Meanwhile,
Hornigold decided to retire from
pirating and accepted the Kings
Pardon for pirates. Edward Teach
was now on his own.
The ship “Concord” was renamed
to “Queen Anne’s Revenge” and
refitted to contain approximately
40 guns. Such a large, well armed
ship with Edward Teach as Captain
was certain to gain attention
very quickly. Again at St. Vincent
another large merchant ship
was spotted, “Great Allen”. This
ship was hastily cleansed of all
valuables, the crew set ashore and
then the ship was set alight and
burnt.
The news spread to the point where
HMS Scarborough was sent to deal
with this pirate nuisance. After
many hours, HMS Scarborough
withdrew from the battle. The ship
was allowed to leave by Teach as
it was not seen to be carrying any
cargo they deemed useful. This
incident solidified the view that
a pirate that can force a British
Captain to withdraw, is one to fear.
Psychological warfare then began.
Teach’s Blackbeard Persona was
born. He let his hair grow, grew
a large beard, twisted them both
into pigtails and tied them with
coloured ribbons. Just before battle
he would place lit hemp cord, fixed
under his hat, and then around his
ears to give the impression that a
smokey cloud would follow him. He
would arm himself as menacingly
as possible with knives, cutlasses
and up to six pistols. The name
Blackbeard was then created. His
image and wilder and wilder stories
spread very quickly and often the
crews of opposing ships surrendered
at the sight of him. He was known
as the Devil-incarnate from some
reports.
Eventually Blackbeard and his men
decided that enough was enough.
They went to receive their pardons
from North Carolina Governor,

Charles Eden and Edward Teach
soon settled in Bath Town. It has
been speculated that Governor
Eden had access to Blackbeard’s
loot since the two became good
friends.
Edward Teach eventually met his
last wife while in retirement, and
rather than a ship’s marriage, the
Governor legally married them.
Before the end of 1718, the pirate
life soon tempted Blackbeard back
to work and he was once again
pirating.
Like all who rise quickly, they can
fall even quicker. On November
the 22nd 1718, a battle between
Blackbeard and Lieutenant Robert
Maynard ensued under the orders
of Virginia Governor Alexander
Spotswood to eradicate the pirate.
Reports say that at least five gun
shots and 20 wounds from a sword
were found upon Blackbeard’s
body after his death. His
removed head was hung
from Maynard’s ship
as a trophy and to
prove the fall of the
legendary Blackbeard.
