The World Walk at a glance
Oxfam-Québec is gearing up for the 46th edition of the World Walk, which will take place on
Friday, May 6, 2016, in Montreal, under the theme Together, Let’s Even It Up!

START AND FINISH LINES
The Walk starts and finishes in the same location:
Meet us in Jeanne-Mance Park (across from Mount Royal)
Schedule
9:00 a.m.
Participants gather in Jeanne-Mance Park.
Registration and animation. Arrive early to enjoy the festivities!
10:15 a.m.
The 46th World Walk begins!
12:45 p.m.
Closing ceremony.
1:45 p.m.
End of the event.
 The Walk will take place rain or shine; bring a raincoat or a festive umbrella!
 Eat a good breakfast.
 Bring a nutritious lunch, drinking water and a pencil.
 The Walk takes place… on foot! Rollerblades, skateboards, bicycles and any other
means of transportation are strictly forbidden.
 Good walking shoes are essential.
 We will be filming and taking photos throughout the day!
 We cannot be held responsible for the loss of or damage to any object during the World
Walk.
 There could be heavy traffic on the way downtown. Choose public
transportation or leave very early in the morning.
 A first-aid team will be on hand, assisted by 350 volunteers.

Making your way to the start line
IMPORTANT! One or two weeks prior the World Walk, you will receive additional information
about bus arrivals, procedures for disembarking passengers and bus parking. This information
will also be available on our website at oxfam.qc.ca/agissez/marche-monde (in French).
At Jeanne-Mance Park, a team of volunteers will be on hand to welcome you; police officers will
also be there to provide instructions.
Using public transportation
ITINERARY A: METRO - ORANGE LINE
Get off at the Mont-Royal metro station, and take bus 11 Montagne going west, all the way to
Jeanne-Mance Park.
ITINERARY B: METRO – GREEN LINE
Get off at the Place-Des-Arts metro station, and take bus 80 Av.du Parc or bus 435 Express
Du Parc/Côte-des-Neiges going north, all the way to Jeanne-Mance Park.
Leaving the event
Boarding is at 1:45 p.m. for everyone!
IMPORTANT! All buses parked in Jeanne-Mance Park must depart at 1:45 p.m. and follow
police instructions. No bus will be authorized to leave before or after this time. For security
reasons, the police will wait for all participants to have boarded before providing instructions on
how to leave the parking zone. If you need to leave earlier, let us know as soon as possible
so that we can suggest alternative parking.
Again this year, buses will be parked in the same spot for passenger boarding and deboarding,
all around Jeanne-Mance Park.
Make sure to identify your bus, so that you can find it easily when the event ends.

A word from Jean-Pierre Denis, co-founder of the
World Walk
“The World Walk is a rite of passage on the path to responsible citizenship and
engagement. On the day that you join the Walk, you are no longer alone, you are
part of committed group of young people who want to change the world in a
positive way.”
Today, more than ever, the world is filled
with glaring inequalities. The Walk is an
opportunity to come together and to offer
alternatives to these inequalities. For this
46th edition, I am particularly excited about
the Even It Up campaign, our theme this
year. Deep down, we all want to be part of
the solution. And to me, the Walk is one
way of inviting young people to be part of
the solution.
The Walk is also a big happening to
highlight
and
recognize
youth
engagement. The participants have
worked hard throughout the school year to
raise funds for development projects,
gather signatures for the Even It Up
petition, and forge bonds with their
community. We want to foster and support
their involvement and value their
contribution. This is the philosophy that
drives us.
Don Bosco, a great educator who devoted
his life to teaching, once said that the
ideal time to influence someone is when
they are 15. At that crucial age, you can
exert a positive influence on youth. The Walk is one way to provide young people with such a
positive and defining moment. Deep down, I am convinced that this event changes lives!
Lastly, I wish to stress that the Walk stands for something, and not against anything. We are for
striving to Even It Up and for improving people’s lives. This is very important: the walk is meant
to inspire hope and to carry a positive message.
I look forward to seeing all of you at the Walk on May 6, so that we can bring positive change to
the world. Together, Let’s Even It Up!

SECTION A – EDUCATIONAL COMPONENT
The World Walk, a worthy successor to the
Marche 2/3
On May 6, 2016, the World Walk will enter its 46th edition. Following in the footsteps of the
Marche 2/3, the Oxfam-Québec World Walk is a solidarity event that enables the young
people of Québec to:
express their solidarity and call for a just world, without poverty;
exert their influence as engaged citizens to highlight that another world is
needed and that, together, we can build it;
raise funds and take concrete action for the world’s poorest communities;
complete a physical challenge over a distance of nearly 6 kilometres.
A colourful, action-filled walk!
BEFORE DEPARTURE: A JOINT ACTION TO UNITE US!
Once more this year, our joint action will see us moving to festive grooves. Performers will be
on hand to warm up the crowd and demonstrate the amazing impact of our collective power
when we all move as one.

THE ITINERARY: MANY BEATS, ONE UNIQUE SOLIDARITY
This year again, the World Walk will follow a loop, starting and finishing at the same point,
and covering a total of 6 kilometres. The itinerary will be divided in six “zones”, each set to a
different beat and designed to take the participants through a genuine rite of passage.

First zone in the itinerary, this is
where the participants get into a
festive mood, thanks to musical
performances and signs encouraging
them to “Make some noise!”, “Do the
wave!” and “Say hurray!”
Silent zone
In a fast-moving world, time to hit
PAUSE
Between two texts or two pics, who still
takes time to think… in silence? Again this
year, we are taking up the challenge of
observing one minute of silence on behalf of
those who are denied the right to speak…
and to do so several thousand “unheard”
voices in unison.
Because when great minds come together,
anything can happen!
Upon arrival at the Walk, be sure to come to
the registration table to pick up your “no
speech sticker”. It will be worn during the
minute of silence to symbolize violations of
freedom of expression all over the world.
Signature zone
Our 2016 signature: Even It Up!
The world’s richest 62 people own as much as the
poorest 3.5 billion! Such extreme economic inequality
greatly undermines the global fight against poverty.
Over the past year, Oxfam-Québec’s team relayed this
message in schools all over Quebec through its Even it
up workshop and web campaign. This part of the
itinerary will reconnect you with the issues that touched
us this year.
Fiesta zone
A CELEBRATION of the world that we want to
create
After the emotions brought on by the minute of
silence, it’s time to let loose!
Musical instruments, dances, ethnically diverse
performances, no effort is spared to throw a
“manifestive” fiesta. After all, our power as citizens
deserves a colourful and creative celebration!
Recognition zone
Because Quebec’s YOUTH changes the world in
positive ways
The end of the walk takes us back to the essential part
of our journey: the Southern communities who benefit
from your support. A nod to Burkina Faso, but mostly
a time to highlight the achievements of students who,
collectively, succeeded in improving thousands of
lives.

show the world your true colours of solidarity all along the walk.
Remember to bring $7 on May 6… bandanas and

The SUPERINFLUENCER CHALLENGE in 4 easy steps
This year, we are asking participants to become SUPERINFLUENCERS by taking on
4 challenges BEFORE the Walk!
Their mission? Fight extreme inequality.
Challenge 1: Sign the Even It Up petition!
To ensure that extreme inequality figures among our governments’ top priorities, sign the Even
It Up petition! (in French)
We are asking students to take up the challenge of signing the petition and getting people
around them to do the same: teachers, parents, relatives, friends, and – why not? – their
school principal, MP or mayor!
Challenge 2: Enter the Mobilization Tools Contest
For over 20 years, the Mobilization Tools Contest has allowed young people to voice their
solidarity by putting forth creative and ecological ideas. As they proudly march with their
mobilization tools, they promote their messages of food justice, responsible consumption and
other issues close to their hearts. In doing so, they sow the seeds of a world based on the
values they believe in. Giant puppets, banners, costumes – we call on young people to unleash
their creativity and make the World Walk as colourful as can be!
The best mobilization tools at
the World Social Forum 2016!
Oxfam-Québec will choose the best
mobilization tools and display them at
the World Social Forum (WSF), to be
held in Montreal from August 9 to 14,
2016.
How can you enter?
Upon arrival on the day of the Walk, proceed to the Mobilization Tools Contest kiosk to register
your tool. You will receive an identification number.
Important! In order for you to be eligible, it is ESSENTIAL that the jury see your mobilization
tool prior to the start of the Walk.
To win, make yourself stand out!
 Use a maximum of salvaged or recycled materials.
 Work in teams! The same team can enter more than one mobilization tool.
 Your mobilization tool should not slow down the other walkers. When planning, consider
the tool’s sturdiness, its resistance to weather conditions and its weight. Remember: you
will need to carry your tool over 6 kilometres!
 If you are making a banner, remember to punch holes in it, so that the wind can blow
through.

Challenge 3: Organize a STAND UP event
As part of the Even It Up campaign, organize a STAND UP event in your school: a simple
activity that you can tailor to your students’ needs.

Challenge 4: Support the community
Whether you wish to familiarize your students with international issues or make them aware of
the importance of safeguarding drinking water, you have the power to improve living conditions
in Burkina Faso.
Order your giant poster now along with stickers to motivate your students to reach their
fundraising goal in the lead up to the World Walk.

Fundraising: Where do your donations go?
A concrete example of a project on the ground:
Water in the Haute Comoé Basin in Burkina Faso
 The project aims to improve the living conditions of people from 5 communes in the
southwestern region of Burkina Faso by facilitating access to drinking water, sanitation
and good hygiene practices.
 Thanks to the project, close to 100,000 people have seen improvements in their
living conditions and approximately 45,000 people have gained direct access to water
(for drinking and for agriculture) and sanitation.
 Oxfam has educated and mobilized more than 100,000 people on issues related to
water and its management.
 At present time, Oxfam is building 15 wells, as well public latrines in 11 schools.

“In Burkina Faso, control over hydraulic structures has been entirely
transferred to the communes, which then face great difficulty in taking
over the structures’ management, as prescribed in the Water Reform.
In the area where we work, we involved and educated the
population from the very beginning of the process and we
accompanied communal authorities in developing water governance
mechanisms to ensure proper maintenance of the structures, good
water quality, transparency in managing user fees, as well as long-term
sustainability for the work that we have completed since the beginning
of the project.”

REGISTER on the day of the Walk:
When you arrive on May 6, please stop by the registration table in the departure
area to confirm your arrival and the number of participants in your group. This is also
where you will receive your “no speech” stickers for the minute of silence.
SENDING DONATIONS TO OXFAM-QUÉBEC
What should you do with cash and cheque donations?
 If you receive cash donations, please send us a cheque for the same amount, as we
are not able to accept cash.
 Cheques must be made out to Oxfam-Québec; remember to write the name of your
school on the back of the cheque!
 As much as possible, please refrain from bringing cash on the day of the event.
We thank you for ensuring that any amounts collected are sent to us ahead of the
Marche.

suppliers are eco-friendly.
HOW ABOUT YOU?
 Choose public transportation to make your way to the Walk (see p. 3 of this
handbook).
 When riding the bus, ask your driver to obey the speed limit and to avoid idling.
 At the end of the event, salvage the materials from your signs and mobilization
tools.
 Bring an eco-friendly lunch box (e.g. local food products, compostable waste
and zero garbage).
