W
elcome to the Queer
Arts Festival 2010 presentation of Queertopia. This
past year has been tremendously busy for QAF. There
have been many hurdles, learning curves and growth spasms
to overcome. Since the end of
last year’s festival the board
of the Pride in Art Society has
been busy planning this year’s
festival. We have increased our
level of support from all three
levels of government, forged
stronger partnerships with our
partners and increased sponsorship.
FEATURE ACT OR AD
OR PROMO ETC.
For the first time Pride in Art
has been fortunate to be in
the position to hire an Artistic Director and a Producing
Director. Shaira Holman is our
new Artistic Director and Seán
Cummings is our Producing Director. These two individuals
bring a wealth of talent to our
organization. I welcome them
and look forward to working
with them in the future.
place and sumptuous nourishment on many occasions during those early marathon board
meetings. She was a voice of
encouragement, wisdom and
calmness. She will be dearly
missed.
JEFF GIBSON, PRESIDENT
This past year the society lost
one of it’s major supporters Catherine White Holman.
Catherine was taken from us
last November suddenly in
a plane crash. I would like to
dedicate this year’s festival in
her honour. Catherine, spouse
of Shaira Holman, had been a
champion of Pride in Art, providing her home as meeting

The Queer Arts Festival has
many supporters, I would like
to thank Heritage Canada, BC
Arts Council, and the City of
Vancouver for their contribution to Queertopia. Our community partners have also
been tremendous advocates
for the QAF: Vancouver Queer
Film Festival, Vancouver Pride
Society and Screaming Weenies to name a few. Finally, I
would like to thank the Marie Lopez and the staff of the
Roundhouse Community Arts &
Recreation Centre for all their
support. I hope you enjoy the

QUEERTOPIA: The Best
Place on Earth?
Imagine the ultimate Queer community… Would
it be a place where being Queer was the norm,
and heterosexuals were the minority? Or a place
where attitudes towards difference didn’t exist?
Where government monikers proclaim “the best
place on earth” — a recent slogan from a Government of BC tourism ad — that would illustrate
how magnificently Queer the province is? Would
Queertopia be the same? Or even better?
Currently Queers in Canada enjoy the “same”
rights and privileges as everyone else, but this
hasn’t always been the case. Historically Queers
were relegated to gay ghettos, densely populated areas of our cities offering limited protection
from harassment and invisibility. And internationally, Queers remain the most oppressed minority, subject to imprisonment and even death
sentences in more jurisdictions than any other
demographic.
So why do we need Queertopia? As Vancouverites recover from the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games — many questions continue to be
raised regarding issues of homelessness, drug
addictions and crime. Millions and millions of
dollars have been spent: will any of these funds
reach those most in need? How will the government respond and where do Queers fit in or are
we invisible? Whether it’s a utopian or dystopian
vision, The Queer Arts Festival invited artists to
share their imagined worlds.

Koncert Kontinuum: Crazy for Cole ’n Co.
Join us for a rare and exclusive glimpse into the
world of renowned concert pianist Sara Davis
Buechner. In an intimate evening of half music
and half words, Sara will trace her life story and
transgender journey, illustrated with works by
Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Nishimura, Vancouver’s
own Jared Miller, and closing with Sara’s signature finale, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Sara
will talk about being the T in GLBT, and share
with dignity and humour what she’s learned
along the way about gender, gender roles, and
how preconceptions have both limited and enhanced her own life. It will be a night of breathtaking pianism, insight and laughter that will be
long remembered and treasured by those lucky
enough to hear it. Artist talk-back following the
show.
Transport back to the 1920s through to the 1940s, with Porter’s sophisticated, brilliant and
daring lyrics, his singable catchy tunes, and provocative social commentary of the times. The
program is supported by two of his most famous songwriting peers, Hoagy Carmichael and
Irving Berlin — both innovators of what are
now jazz standards and whose songs are still
“in rotation” today. Koncert Kontinuum will
deliver their special mix of audience favorite
sing-along’s, gorgeous ballads, comic pieces,
and of course a few songs with the unexpected KK twist.
Koncert Kontinuum presents a fabulous tribute to celebrated queer composer Cole Porter and
his contemporaries, with a showcase of witty vocal repartee, smooth stylings of the saxophone and playful piano patter.

Big Gay Sing
The No Shit Shirleys
The Vancouver Men’s Chorus marches back into
Pride events with the Canadian debut of The Big
Gay Sing. This interactive audience sing-a-long
takes you out of the spectator’s seats and puts
you right into the production.
The No Shit Shirleys are seven unique women
with seven signature, solo voices, who have
come together to create a jewel-toned septet.
They have inspired and touched the hearts of
audiences with music that truly celebrates both
life’s joys and struggles. The No Shit Shirleys are
proud to present a concert for the Queer Arts
Festival, with a program will be all a capella,
featuring their diverse and eclectic repertoire.
Original material and gorgeous, innovative arrangements of traditional pieces from around
the world will be presented, centering on life,
love and womanhood. Whether it be love songs,
music of celebration, or songs of protest, the
Shirleys’ music is always full of joy, strength and
courage — music to live by.
Queer Cabaret: Hosted by
Denis Simpson and
Karen Lee-Morlang
The hosts for this fabulous evening of entertainment will be none other than the unstoppable
Connie Smudge along with our very own VMC
member and actor extraordinaire; Jamie Foster.
This dynamic duo will get the show rolling as
they lead the audience in song as well as entertaining all with their hilarious antics on stage.
No need to worry about your singing ability or
learning any words as they will be projected high
above you while a bouncing ball guides you to
sing the words you need to. There will be singing
and schmacting galore by various VMC members,
artistically lead by our very own Willi Zwozdesky
and accompanied by our own Liberace — Dr. Stephen Smith.
Hilarious and touching, smoky and sensual, passionate and political, the third annual Queer Cabaret showcases the talents of Vancouver’s queer
actors, musicians and dancers. This evening of innovative, integrated, live performance is hosted
by BC Hall of Fame inductee Denis Simpson and
diva pianist-vocalist Karen Lee-Morlang. Featuring singers Joel Klein, Catherine Laub, Kevin
Lee, Wade Nott and William George, dancer Brett
Owen, actors Mark Kershaw and Tara Fynn.
Clean Sheets: New Play Workshop and Reading Series

“True as oak.”
Screaming Weenie Productions, Vancouver’s professional queer theatre company once again
is partnering with QAF to bring playwrights from across Canada to work with local theatre talent in order to take their plays to the next stage of development.
Keep the Pride celebration going after watching the parade by joining us at the Roundhouse
on Sunday August 1; doors open at 6:00 pm and
the fun starts at 7:00 pm. Tickets are only $15
and will be available at Little Sisters Bookstore
and if there are any available; at the door. Come
dressed in your most outrageous outfit. There
will be a cash bar.
What a great way to cap this day off or prime
yourself up for the next party. See you at the Big
Gay Sing, an event you won’t want to miss!!!
Curated by theatre artists Seán Cummings and C.E. Gatchalian, Clean Sheets brings the spot
light to bear on the playwright as the centre of new theatre works creation and the series focus
is on giving theatrical form to issues that deal specifically with the lives of sexual and gender
queer people.

One + One: James Howell and Morgan Brayton Double Bill

Queer Arts Festival is proud to present two solo
shows of edgy comedy: Morgan Brayton’s Raccoonery! and James Howell’s Take Down Your
Panties on Main Street
One + One: James Howell and Morgan Brayton Double Bill
Morgan Brayton in
Raccoonery!
James Howell in Take Down
Your Panties on Main Street
Morgan is pleased to be premiering her new solo
show at this year’s Queer Arts Festival. Once
again, Brayton reaches into her tickle trunk of
comedy and pulls out a mad mix of characters to
delight and disturb you with. A moth with boyfriend troubles. A highschoolhating, Van Halen-loving valedictorian of the class of ‘84.
A princess with a penchant for
ice-cream. Oh, and the return
of Button Bradley. Non-stop
raccoonery from beginning
to end!
Take Down Your Panties on Main Street is a solo
show about a celebrity artist who sells junk art
to people with more money than sense, being
asked to give a few remarks to an art school
painting class. The class’s teacher elopes with
the life drawing model,
leaving nothing for the
class to paint and no one
teach them. The famous
painter steps onto the
posing platform to offer “a
few remarks” that are part
confession, tirade, standup and erotic valedictory address. The painter
shows images of “his”
work, which are actually
other people’s paintings,
partly to inflate his ego,
partly to see if the students will know the difference. He ends up saying
more than he should and
more than anyone could
have imagined. Directed
by Kiersten Tough. Written and performed by
James Howell.
Morgan Brayton is the writer/
performer of the awardwinning one-person show
Girls Like Me, was one-half of
the comedy duo The Crawford
Twins and a former member
of the popular sketch troupe
30 Helens. Sharing the stage
with the likes of Janeane
Garofalo, Elvira Kurt and Scott
Thompson, Morgan has been
a featured performer at the
Vancouver Comedy Festival,
Seattle SketchFest, the We’re
Funny That Way festival and
on CBC Radio’s The Debaters.
An accomplished film and
television actor, Morgan can be
seen on big and small screens
everywhere in a wide range
of roles such as: Chubby Best
Friend, Second Cashier and
Person with Face. She has been
the Mistress of Ceremonies
at Vancouver’s Dyke March
festival stage since the event’s
inception in 2003 and a
host of the festival stage at
Vancouver’s Pride parade. The
Georgia Straight named her
“Our Lily Tomlin of hilarity” in
their Best of Vancouver issue
and Westender magazine said,
“You think you’re funny? You’re
not funny. Vancouver’s own
Morgan Brayton — she’s funny!
Kinda like Tracey Ullman, but
more lesbian-y and kinda
dirtier ‘n’ stuff. You really need
to see her to fully understand
how funny you’re not.”
