Our Lodge is currently going through the process of revising and updating our Lodge/Club By-laws. Any member wishing to make a suggestion or change to these By-laws is asked to submit the request in type written format, signed, and addressed to the By-laws committee. Place the request in a sealed envelope and drop it in the locked box outside the door to the office. Any unsigned requests will be thrown away. Thanks for your help in making our Lodge & Club enjoyable for us all! Angling in the Archives “It was 20 Years Ago Today…” Headline in the 1994 Fond du Lac Reporter: ”Elks Drinking on the Porch” This refers to when the previous club manager, Leo Zinniel, applied to the city for a permit that included alcoholic beverage sales and service being available on the porch. This caused quite a stir in the community among some who were concerned that patrons of the library might be struck by empty beer cans that were being tossed over the railing by inebriated Elks. Of course, in hindsight I suspect that Leo knew there would come a time in the not-so-distant future when smoking would no longer be permitted anywhere indoors! (You elder Elks should recognize the words of those famous philosophers John Lennon and Paul McCartney, above in gold) Terry Shoemaker, PER, Bulletin Editor Let Christmas be time to ‘Elevate America’! This is the busy holiday season when social activities at our Lodges are at the maximum and we as Elks have the opportunity for fun with our friends. December can also be a time for great voluntary service in our communities. I am reminded of a good friend who is an active and prominent Elk in my home state. He grew up in a dusty town in another state where the economy was chronically in poor shape. My friend learned of the Elks when he was a boy in his small town because of the annual Christmas party hosted by the Elks for the whole community. Some 50 years later he would recount the pleasant experiences of sitting on Santa’s lap at the Elks Lodge, grateful for the simple gift he received from the Elks on those happy occasions. This remembrance of my friend exemplifies the message of our Leading Knight’s Initiatory charge that “the influence of a good deed, honestly and promptly performed, will continue forever.”One of the most heart-warming activities that we can participate in is Christmas basket donations to the needy. It takes a little planning and a few requests to local businesses for donations of food items and small gifts. My experience is that at this time of year our businesses are supportive and generous in this type of activity. If your Lodge does not have a community gift basket program you are missing out. This is one activity that when the call goes out for volunteers you will be pleased at the positive response. This can also be a time of year when sadness can be felt in our VA hospitals. A friendly visit with a veteran who is sick or In distress will be rewarded greatly. It costs nothing other than a little time, and “the influence of a good deed will last forever.” Marcia and I wish all Elks and families a Merry Christmas and Happy and Prosperous New Year. ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION as of November 16, 2014 $11.00 per member Recently, I was paging through the Elks magazine when I realized that if it wasn’t for Elks National Foundation, most of the stories and pictures in this magazine would not be there. Every month, there are countless stories and pictures of Elks across the country reaching out to veterans and youth in an effort to make a difference. I always look for the articles about the state of Wisconsin, and what the lodges across our state have done to support the Elks cause. Some hold a bike rally; others have a dinner and play bingo with a group of veterans. Most, if not all, hold a scholarship dinner, or a Veterans Day dinner. While not all the money to support these programs comes from the ENF, it does show how the ENF have stepped in and recognized these various groups of people. As an ENF donor, you too, can be a supportive of these programs. By making the effort to donate at least $10, or $25, or even $100, each and every year to the ENF, these programs will continue to grow and more people will benefit from your support. I have a request for our newer members, the members who have joined within the past 3 years. Do you recall during your orientation, just prior to becoming a member watching the video about the Elks National Foundation and how your donations benefit the veterans and youth programs here in FDL, and around the country. At that meeting, I encouraged you to make a donation at least once a year to help continue these programs. Most of you made a donation prior to joining our Lodge, but now I am asking you to make a donation each and every year that will help grow the ENF’s contributions back into the FDL community in the form of grants and scholarships. Also, if you have not donated, donor cards are available in the Lodge foyer, or you can go online to www.elks.org, and just click on the red box that says “donate today”, and follow the script. Please consider making another donation to the ENF, and every year hereafter. Last month, I put out a challenge to all our members, that whoever would donate at least $25.00 during October, (ENF month) I would donate $5.00. Well, 19 members have taken me up on that challenge thus far. I will check the donor report during November, because there will be a few others that will be recorded within the first couple of weeks of November, and I will include them as well. Thank you to everyone who accepted my challenge, it was easier than getting a bucket of ice water thrown on me, and you have donated to a great program. It was a win-win for everyone! ALL DONATIONS TO THE ENF ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE Do you have the ENF on your Christmas list? They have been very good to us this year! Plus, if you donate before the end of 2014, you will have a tax deduction. Best Wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Let’s keep working together! Don Behnke, PER, Lodge #57 ENF Chairman Bill Weinshrott, PER (L) thanks Jim Guell, PER, for his years of dedicated military service Veterans Day Remembrance Local Veterans enjoying a complimentary buffet lunch at the Elk’s on November 11 Nearly 50 veterans attended a luncheon in their honor on Tuesday November 11, at the Lodge. We found the majority of the veterans were Elk members, but many were not, and we were happy to have them join us. As you may know we are trying to get an active Veterans group going again, this being our first activity. I would like to thank the many volunteers who made this event possible: Mike Hackbarth, who gave an enjoyable and meaningful keynote address; Food Donations: Bob and Darlene Ferdinand, Lynn and Bill Weinshrott, Char and Bob Bohnsack, and Lynne and Don Sears and also table decorations; Also thank you to the meat donor who wishes to remain anonymous; Thank you to Pete Sorenson and Chris for unloading and loading the car; Thank you to Ed Barnes for taking the donated food leftovers to Loaves and Fishes; Thank you also to Kelly and the staff.
