Fresh from traumatic killer
typhoon “Yolanda”, people in
the most devastated communities here were again alarmed
by another calamity that almost
hit, the outskirts this time, not
the coastal barangays, had it
not been for the heavy rains
that poured on the third night of
grass fire.
Most

it as a most needed blessing or
Divine Intervention, because
neither the firemen nor the lone
Chopper (with the bucket of water) of the Philippine Airforce
could contain the fire.

editorial staff of the Borongan Diocese for quickly passing the information and seeking the assistance of concerned government
agencies, where the Office of the
Civil Defense (OCD)Regional
Office-08 took the lead.
As reported, the fire started from the forested area of
Marabut, Western Samar and
Basey, then to Lawaan, Balangiga
and Quinapondan, although they
were some few meters distance
from each other. Then it was
almost simultaneously spotted
in the forest vicinity of Eastern
Samar State University(ESSU),
Salcedo Campus prompting top
management to suspend classes.
The same fire of individual
packet were also seen in the forested Homonhon island of Guiuan and Hernani.
Other than Guiuan, the
aforesaid towns also topped the
list of the most damaged areas
by super typhoon Yolanda, such
that people near the forest fires
got anxious once more at the impending danger.
“Ano na ba ine? Katapos
pala han hangin ug uran, kalayo
naman?”, said a fearful housewife in barangay Sta. Rosa, Balangiga.
Unconfirmed report has it
that a farmer in the Marabut forested area, did a Kaingin in preparation for his slope planting, but
did not consider the dried fallen
twigs and trunks of trees around.
The grass fire that added
damaged to the so-called virgin
forest of Samar island started on
February 19 up to the evening of
Februay 21 because Heaven’s
large, powerful “Fire Truck”- it
rained heavily until February 22.

Diocese of Borongan convenes organizations involved in Yolanda recovery

The Diocese of Borongan called together international, national and local
organizations to discuss concerns to ensure their coordination in the on-going
recovery and rehabilitation of the families of Yolanda survivors. This was held
last February 6, 2014 at the Bishop’s
Residence.
The organizations present were the
representatives of Catholic Relief Services, Caritas Internationalis/National
Secretariat of Social Action (NASSA),
CBCP-NASSA,Caritas Germany, The
Asia Foundation, Australian Embassy–
Australian Aid, Salesian Society of St.
John Bosco, Oikos Ptochos Theo-Borongan, and Provincial Planning and
Development Office (PPDO) of E. Samar.
Bishop Crispin Varquez of the Diocese of Borongan asserted that the coordination of intervention of organizations
is important to be able to reach survivors and to give the intervention for
them easily so as to rebuild their own
lives.
Each of the said organization presented a profile of the organization and
each one shared an update of their intervention in Yolanda onslaught and discussed with the group the issues which
they need to address with the support of
the Diocese of Borongan.
Dieter Rachbauer of the Caritas
Germany shared that the international
Caritas network together with NASSA
and with the Diocese of Borongan Commission on Social Action is engaged in
the structure, staffing, and programs. He
said that the Caritas Germany intends to
stay in E. Samar for three to four years for
the relief and recovery phase of Yolanda
survivors giving them relief goods, nonfood items and cash for work program
for barangays.They will also provide
shelter to them in the near future.
Neal Deles of Caritas Internationalis/NASSA said that the organization is
concerned on the basic needs, livelihood and environment for the Yolanda
survivors. He said that NASSA is here
to support the Diocese in the implementation of the relief and rehab phase,
and also raise funds for the emergency
appeal until the end of the month. He
stated that NASSA will be working with
other organizations for the church and
chapel reconstruction with Cor Unom,
and Catholic Relief Services.
Ma. Emily M. De Vera of Catholic
Relief Services (CRS) said their organization is on the recovery phase in giving
shelter and livelihood to the survivors of
Yolanda in some of the areas of E. Samar.
JojiAbot-Camelon of the Australian
Aid said that they are planning to help
the calamity areas throughvegetable
planting livelihoodat Brgy. Ibiran, Salcedo and to organize farming group.
They also hope to include Quinapondan
and Balangiga in their roster of beneficiaries.
Fr. Antonio Alconaba of the Diocese
of Borongan Relief Operations said the
diocese delivered as of February 6, 2014
eighty four thousand fourteen (84,014)
food packs to the survivors of Yolanda
in the south of E. Samar and to some of
the parishes in the north of E. Samar and
thousands of non-food items to the parishes of the diocese.

Borongan and are providing their interventions in the Diocese of Borongan

Inc. (PMPI) and Lotus Hilsfprogramme,

Caritas Germany, CordAid, Toshiba
(Makati), Habitat for Humanity, CBCP
NASSA, Team Energy Corporation and
Christ the King Parish of Quezon City,
Bakhita Canossa Foundation and St. Peter and Paul Vicariate Makati, Catholic
Relief Services (CRS), Shanti Volunteers,
Manos Unidas/Cord Aid and Fr. Leonard
Dallante and friends, and Partnership in
Mission.
Ian Mosquesa of the Diocese of Borongan Social Action Commission gave
the updates of the database of the Diocese for the relief and early recovery
and rehabilitation which was drawn
from the data given by the Yolanda survivors.

stressed that the Diocese of Borongan
Communications Group, and United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) together
with the Philippine Information Agency
(PIA) of E. Samar, Internews – RadyoBakdaw FM Station, Haiti communitere and
Oxfam have agreed to share information
and data on Yolanda aftermath through
their respective different media plat-
forms such as radio, print, SMS, and
website. She said that the diocese is
visible through the ESTE! newspaper
and its website, www.estenews.org.
Marlie Cenera recalled that the
medical mission of the Diocese of
Borongan was held in Balangkayan,
and Salcedo. She also said that the
Diocese of Borongan in partnership
with the Diocese of Joliet, USA and
provincial government of E. Samar
conducted a Bulig Kablas Medical
Mission from Feb. 3, 2014 until Feb. 13,
2014 at the provincial hospital.
Sr. Minerva Bagas shared that
educational scholarships were sponsored to some of the children in Guiuan by the Oikos.
Fr. Julius Sanchez of the Salesian
Society of St. John Bosco shared that
they are involved in the distribution
of relief goods of both of the diocese
and Don Bosco networks from here
and abroad. He stated that last Nov.
27 they have started to build temporary shelters in Brgy. Batang, Hernani through the referral of Gawad
Kalinga. They are currently building houses in Quinapondan and San
Miguel and they also provide coconut
lumbers to families.

Planning and Development Office
(PPDO) of E. Samar stressed that they
are finalizing the post disaster assessment from the data provided by
municipalities.
UN Habitat backs up rehabilitation, recovery planning workshop

In its effort to consolidate and harmonize the rehabilitation and recovery
of typhoon Yolanda hardest hit areas,
the provincial government here is currently conducting a three-day strategic
planning workshop on the formulation
of the Provincial Rehabilitation and Recovery Plan.
As reported by Mr. Levi Nicart,
Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction
Management Officer(PDRRMO), part
of the provincial plan are the municipal plans on their respective recovery
and rehabilitation, thus the attendance
of the teams from the hardest hit municipalities.
With the assistance of the team
from the UNHabitat, the workshop also
aims to address and integrate all the
concerns, needs and proposed interventions of typhoon affected municipalities, into a comprehensive rehabilitation plan.
The Team particularly assists the
municipal and provincial teams in formulating a more holistic and comprehensive document that may quickly
win the approval of Office of Presidential Assistance on Relief and Recovery
(PARR).
“It is vitally important that assistance come soon to the calamity
stricken communities, and complete
the rehabilitation and recovery assistance for the victims to start livelihood
activities, rebuild homes and reunite
children and families to begin a new
and normal life”, Nicart further said.
Initial data presentations revealed
the most concerns for infrastructures,
shelters with reference to Municipal
Comprehensive Land Use Plans,

Borongan celebrates its first year anniversary this month.
The editorial staff of ESTE! commends its sponsors, benefactors, donors and subscribers who continually support and sustain the paper in its existence.
ESTE! started with a 12 page sheets of international, national, diocesan and parish
news.
The first issue of the newspaper featured on its front page the visit of the relics of
St. Therese of the Child Jesus to the Cathedral of the Nativity of Our Lady.

ATIP project curbs child trafficking

Advocacy and information campaign
so with community participation have
largely helped in reducing cases of trafficking of children and persons which is
being provided in the Anti-Trafficking in
Persons Law of the Philippines.
This was revealed by Ms. Shirley
Bastero, Project Manager of the Community Empowerment Toward the Prevention and Reintegration of Trafficked
Persons(CETPRP) during the evaluation
conference held recently at the St. Mary’s
auditorium here.
But, such tools in whatever project
that would be implemented must be done
with participatory and interactive approaches, she said.
CETPRTP in the province was spear-
headed by Ms. Brenda Basada with the
full support of PLAN International, an international humanitarian group, with focus on children’s protection.
The project was implemented in the
province since 2008 and was terminated
in December 2013.
As it formally closed recently in
an exit conference with Local government unit representatives, Basada and
Bastero named a few accomplishment
of the project to wit: 1) The project has
made considerable contribution to the
ATIP campaign, particularly in the target
provinces, municipalities and communities of the project. 2) The decrease of
trafficking incidence in the project areas was evident from the observations of
the respondents and stakeholders of the
project. 3) It has also established and engaged partnership with the national government, having the latter increase its
institutional linkages and network, which
in the long run will be beneficial to both
parties in their ATIP program.
Moreover, 4) the active participation
of the duty-holders and service providers in the development and installation of
community mechanisms motivates them
to protect their constituents. 5) Mobilizing and building capacities of the barangays particularly the neighborhoods/
puroks as the first line of defense is an
effective strategy as they have direct
contacts with their constituents. 6) Child
participation is facilitated by a child-
friendly and enabling environment and
with the guidance of trained staff so that
the children feel safe and encouraged to
express their views and opinions on matters affecting them. 7) The political will of
the LGUs must be harnessed to motivate
them to fulfill their obligations to their
constituents.
Overall however, it was concluded
that child protection once adopted as a
priority concern of LGUs, will have the
support of the duty bearers and service
providers.
Basada concluded, that only the
project was terminated, but the linkages
with lgus and other NGAs will continue
with a stronger support with one another.

CFC- ANCOP E. Samar builds shelters for Yolanda survivors

As an answer to the urgent need of
Yolanda survivors, part of the ministry of
the Couples for Christ (CFC), the Answering the Cry of the Poor (ANCOP), constructs
homes for families in Hernani and San Policarpo.
Bishop Crispin Varquez, the Bishop of
the Diocese of Borongan visited the shelter sites in Hernani on February 16, 2014
to support the endeavor and to encourage
the CFC members in E. Samar to construct
shelters for Yolanda victims.

CFC E. Samar in the procurement of shelter
materials.
It was a team effort and bayanihan with
a number of CFC and non-CFC volunteers
from San Policarpo, Oras, Dolores, CanAvid, San Julian, Hernani, Llorente, Sulangan and Quinapondan who lend a hand in
the construction of eleven houses in Brgy.
Binugawan, San Policarpo, and in three barangays in Hernani namely Brgy. Garawon,
Brgy. Carmen, and Brgy. 4 in the Poblacion.
The CFC –ANCOP which believes
that faith has to be put into action through
its ministry started the building of homes
to its first beneficiaries in Brgy. Garawon,
Hernani.
Included in the CFC-ANCOP plan is
to give shelters to families in Brgy. Alugan,
San Policarpo. The construction of shelters
is expected to be complete by the end of
February.
Each shelter is described to be five
meters long and four meters wide, with
concrete floor, plywood wall, nipa roof and
uses coconut lumber.

Information Relief
“Information is a vital form of aid in itself… People need information as much
as water, food, medicine or shelter. Information can save lives, livelihoods and resources” says the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies
(IFRC).
“Information and communications are critical forms of aid, without which
disaster survivors cannot access services or make the best decisions for themselves and their communities… Restoration of communication networks, including
mobile phone connectivity and radio, must be a humanitarian priority... This is key
to delivering effective assistance that meets the needs of a traumatized population
in an environment where rumors and misunderstandings can cause serious problems” (UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Communications
with Communities).
The above insights were proven true in the aftermath of Yolanda. Literally,
there was a total breakdown of communications, even confusion, among the crucial
agencies of the government, Church, and NGO networks.
It can be dreary and scary to lose one’s connections and orientation, especially at a time when one’s life-world has been reduced to a global village due to
technology. Many people experienced sleepless nights worrying about the plights
of their loved ones in the typhoon-stricken areas.
It can be noted that situations like this were anticipated already before. The
prospect of severe devastation to land-based communications facilities prompted
the birth of the Internet. At first, it was a purely-military technology which was programmed to be the alternative means of communications in case of a crippling
nuclear attack.
After Yolanda struck, an event which can be likened to such calamity because of the extent and intensity of the destruction wrought, the need for precise,
timely, updated, and relevant information system among the first responders and
relief providers was keenly felt. Yet, the quick and widespread response of the international community and private organizations can also be attributed to the popularity and effectiveness of the social media and various communications technologies.
Thus, if there is a key area that must be taken into careful and serious consideration in disaster-preparedness initiatives and in relief and rehab operations,
such area is communications networking and capability-building among and within
communities and with respective aid agencies and organizations.

“Choose to be brave. Called to be
Saints. Sent forth as Heroes.” This is the
theme chosen as the CBCP declares the
Year of the Laity from December 1, 2013
(the first Sunday of Advent) to November
23, 2014 (the Feast of Christ the King). This
declaration gives emphasis on the many
important roles of the Laity in the Church.
The Lay Faithful are the collaborators of and
have co-responsibility with the bishops,
priests and religious in the works of evangelization. With the emergence of many religious organizations, renewal movements
and the BEC program, it is proven that the
lay people are very effective in their approach to the work of evangelization with
the proper guidance and accompaniment
of the bishops and priests. The Basic Ecclesial Community that organizes the parishioners by neighbourhood unites all these
religious organizations and renewal movements in the parishes and in the Diocese.
The Church has given us models on
how to be saints and heroes in our Catholic
Christian Faith. As Filipinos, we have two in
particular: San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila and
San Pedro Calungsod. Even today, the very
active and dedicated lay people who work
hard in the church to respond to the call of
the New Evangelization are models, too.
After the super typhoon Yolanda, we
have seen the heroism of many of our lay
people. Their Faith and Trust in God enabled them to accept reality and to start
moving on as they restart their life and
rebuild their houses as well as their livelihood. Their Faith and Trust in God empowered them. How admirable is the Faith of
these people! Indeed, “Faith moves mountains.” This is what I call: “Laity Power”...
In their prayers, they do not ask God
to take away their trials and difficulties. Instead, they ask Him to give them the grace
of enough strength to face and overcome

JOSE LUGAY RAGUEL—“DEPUTADO”
OF THE THIRD DISTRICT OF SAMAR (now,
Eastern Samar) TO THE 4TH PHILIPPINE
LEGISLATURE. Question from Daisuke
Azul: “Is is true that Jose Lugay was the
third representative of Samar before the
island was divided into three provinces?”
No, he was not. The honor goes to Mariano
Alde. To be exact, before the island of Samar was divided into three provinces, it
had three representatives, one for the First
District (roughly, Northern Samar), one for
the Second District (roughly, Samar) and
another one for the Third District (roughly,
Eastern Samar). Now, as regards the Third
District, the first representative to the first
Philippine Legislature was Eugenio Daza,
who served from 1907 to 1909. The second
was Eladio Cinco, from 1909 to 1912. The
third was Mariano Alde, whose term lasted from 1912 to 1916. And the fourth was
JOSE LUGAY (RAGUEL); he represented
the Third District from 1916 to 1919 in the
Fourth Philippine Legislature.
DID LANANG (LLORENTE) REALLY
COME FROM “TANANG”?—TOWARD AN
ALTERNATIVE VIEW. Standard historiog-
raphy of Llorente claims that the word “Lanang,” the former name of Llorente, comes
from “tanang,” which means ripe bananas.
The village, it is said, was originally called
“Tanang”, owing to the abundance of ripe
fruits of bananas that grew in the original
settlement.
As a student of Eastern Samar history,
I doubt this explanation very much. First,
as far as I know, there is no documentary
and archival evidence to prove it. Second,
it seems to me that it would be difficult to
show how, if one study the Samarenyo language, the word “lanang” could have been
derived from “tanang.” Third (and even
more important), in Binisaya, the word “lanang” exists, but is not in any way related
to a word that means “ripe”. As a noun, it
means pond, swamp, or pool. As a verb, it
means to whiten. Fourth, in Dolores, there
is a pre-Hispanic place called Lanang,
named not after ripe bananas, but after a
body of water nearby. (Incidentally, there
is also a place in Davao called Lanang
where a huge SM building prominently
stands; in Cebuano, the word signifies the

Family, A Journey Of Love
Family life is a journey of love towards
eternity, and eternity is of course HEAVEN
not HELL!
This journey is difficult but possible
for we are not called for it, if it is beyond
our being human. Yes, it entails lot of sacrifices because the contracting parties to
start a family are from different upbringing, with their own weaknesses, limitations,
experiences and strength, but they come
before the Lord to be one because of the
power of LOVE . The journey starts with a
covenant with the Lord in the Sacrament
of Marriage. As the journey goes on and
as the family grows, joys intersperse with
sadness, problems, trials, temptations come
as challenges that may tend to weaken the
bond of love. Others quit the journey if one
of the contracting parties or both could not
endure. But these challenges if taken positively could also strengthen the bond to
sustain and spice the journey.
In my query from well- meaning
friends on how to sustain the journey of love
as a family, a young businessman husband
said, “Always work hard to provide for your
wife and children but never forget to make
yourself handsome and to take a bath.”
My First Grader Is Being Bullied…..

call your husband or wife and children to
check on of their where about.”
A glamorous wife said, “Always be
beautiful and sexy or presentable, kahit

one day, tears flowing down her cheeks,
and shaking in fear. You ask her what
the matter is, in between sobs she tells
you that she doesn’t want to go back
to school anymore. She said that for
the past three months, her schoolmate
named Bruno has been continually
threatening to beat her if she would not
give him her “baon” and carry for him
his heavy bag each school day. With
trembling lips she narrated that as she
was about to leave school that day, she
saw her classmate Jesse, with a bloodied
face, being forced by Bruno to eat dirt.
Unfortunately for the likes of Bruno,
Pres. Benigno Aquino III signed into law
R.A. 10627 or the Anti-Bullying Act of
2013 last September 12, 2013. Under
this statute, for bullying to occur, it is
not required that the child-victim should
experience actual physical harm. It is
enough that the acts of the bully would
have the effect of placing the childvictim in reasonable fear of physical
or emotional harm or damage to her or
his property. Bullying also includes any
conduct resulting to harassment, intimidation or humiliation through the use of
social media, texting or other forms of
technology.
As a preventive measure, the
schools are mandated to adopt and
implement a child – protection or anti
bullying policy. In fact, non-compliance
with the provisions of R.A. 10627 and its

February is the most awaited time for true friends. Young and old love to celebrate friendship day in a
most special way.
Most of us celebrate wedding anniversaries, birthdays and why don’t we have a special day of the year
to celebrate friendship?
What is meant or should be true friendship? A common idea of tru friends among young people is, “I
like Him and He likes me.” Friendship means many different things to different people, yet it is related to
our basic human need to be connected to others. It gives much and demands much as it blesses our lives
and help us grow. Most of all, it is a human manifestation of our relationship with God. Friendship is all
about the right connections.
Do you have such friends? Does God touch your soul and heart through a friend? Are you such a
friend? Does God touch a friend’s soul and heart through you?
The good friend is one who hold me accountable for my talents and my weaknesses, encourages me in
my hopes and dreams and is companion to me when I look into the mirror of the water which “does not
flatter” and faithfully shows whatever looks into it (Doris Donnelly).
“A friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out” (Walter Winchell).
How do we recognize true friendship? True friends are not “conscience” and “special interest.” Convenience, special interest, historical and casual friends and acquaintances come and go. True friends are the
treasures that remain forever.
How precious friendships are when found! Even though they are rare and difficult to achieve, there are
ways to develop and nurture successful ones.
Friendship has its own life. It can develop and grow or it can degenerate and perish. There are some ways
to help sustain and nurture true friendships. These are the following:
1. Remember and live by the advice of Emerson. “The only way to have a friend is to be one.” Thoreau echoes it. “The most I can do for my friend is simply be his friend.”
2. Do to your friend what you would like your friend do for you.
3. Always keep the lines of honest communications open. Never end the day with resentment in your heart.
4. See the solution more than the problem. You can use your friendship to find solutions, but never use your friends.
5. Try to see things from your friend’s point of view and when you disagree, kindly agree to dis
agree.
6. Choose carefully the friends you want to be with. Quality is more important than quantity. “Tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are.”
7. Let your friend know that you care. Love never runs out. It multiplies. Love like friendship is not something you prove. Love is someone you experience.

In my queries from various respondents, I met three problem cases:
Case 1: “Tita, the feeling is gone. It
seems I don’t love him anymore.” Why? I
asked. “:May problema kasi, irresponsible,
Mama’s boy, may third party pa.” She answered.
Love in marriage is not just a feeling. It
is a commitment and a decision. Our partner is a gift from God (GG). Pray for God’s
guidance and enlightenment . Ask also the
help of people close to you to pray for you
, and the best is your family as the prayer
warriors.
One day this young wife called up,
“Tita, mahal ko pa pala.” How did you
know? I asked. “ The Lord told me through
a dream. My husband met an accident and
he died. I woke up crying with a heavy
heart and prayed, Lord , please don’t take
my husband from me. Love ko pa pala!” She
realized.

Case 2: A mother is angry with her son
with a problem, a drop-out, causing pain
and shame to the family, “Pamumul-iwan ko
na, bahala na hiya hit iya kinabuhi.”
A child is a gift to the family, the child
did not ask the parents for him to be born.
A child is entrusted by God to parents for
them to be instruments for the fulfillment of
God’s plan for the child and the design is
for eternity.
Case 3:A son was complaining, “ I
don’t like my parents. They are not understanding, not like the parents of my friend.
They are supportive and good provider.”
But can we choose our parents? Being
a son or daughter by our parents is God’s
design and He knows what is best for each
and everyone of us. His will is better than
man’s will. His design is for eternity.
Family life is a journey of unconditional love, and that is God’s design that will
bring us all to HEAVEN, for in this family
there is acceptance, affirmation, compassion, forgiveness, never ending second
chances and respect. Every member exerts
extra mile in everything good that he does
for the family, willing to offer sacrifices and
his whole life for his family as an offering to
God according to His holy will, to be able to
fulfill the contract for ETERNITY.
The family is not just for itself, but
a part of a big family of God. Every family
has a mission to be a light to other families
with the power of the Holy Spirit to help renew the face of the Earth to make this Earth
pleasing to our Creator. This will usher in
all families to ETERNITY with HIM in HEAVEN. So let us all “BEHOLD and PONDER”!

Bulig Kablas medical mission marks 10th anniversary

When bullying occurs, recourse to
the Barangay for amicable settlement

complaint be brought to the Department. The disciplinary measure that could
be meted out against the bully would
depend on the gravity of the offense
and the attendant circumstances. A written reprimand, community service, suspension, exclusion or expulsion, are just
among the choices. However, in case the
bullying incident would result in serious
physical injuries or death, the case will
already be covered by the provisions
of R.A. 9344 or Juvenile Justice Welfare
Act as amended by R.A. 10630 or An Act
Strengthening the Juvenile Justice System.
Every year, for the last ten years, volunteer doctors, nurses, and other medical
practitioners from the Partnership in Mission of the Diocese of Joliet, Illinois USA
come to Borongan for the Bulig Kablas
Medical Mission (BKMM). And from February 3-13 this year, hundreds of Eastern
Samareños availed of the free medical
and surgical services.
The Joliet Medical team was composed of OB-Gynecologists, Pediatricians, ENT and General Surgeons from
the US, Canada, Spain and Australia.
They worked with our local doctors and
volunteer nurses to give free medical
treatment. A team of Opthalmologists and
Pediatric Surgeons from Tacloban also
joined the mission.
More than 3,500 patients availed of
the free services. This year, they performed 267 surgeries on patients with
hernias, goiters, hemorrhoids, nasal polyps, ovarian cysts, gallstones, and other
cases. 11 children underwent cheiloplasty and herniotomy, while 71 patients had
their cataracts and pterygiums removed.
All those who underwent surgery had it
for free, from the laboratory works, to the
post-op care. A total of 1,421 people were
consulted and 1,750 given free medicines.
The BKMM is a partnership between
the Diocese of Borongan, the Diocese of
Joliet and the Provincial Government of
Eastern Samar. The medical mission, now
on its tenth year was held at the Eastern
Samar Provincial Hospital.
Bishop Crispin Varquez said in an
interview with ESTE! that he is grateful
for the support given by the Diocese of
Borongan, Diocese of Joliet, USA and the
financial assaistance of the provincial
government of E. Samar for this year’s
Bulig Kablas Medical Mission. He underlined that we believe in our faith and that
we have to institutionalize it for we have
to respond to the needs of the poor. He
also hopes and encourages each entity to
strive to continue the Bulig Kablas Medical Mission in the future.
In his message during the exit conference, Bishop Crispin Varquez expressed his gratitude to the group headed by their Medical Director, Dr. Victor
Trinkus for their untiring commitment to
give free assistance to the poor people of
Eastern Samar.
For his part, Fr. Juderick Calumpiano
of the Diocesan Social Action Commission
said that the mission was a success. More
people were served this year, compared
to the precious years. He also expressed
his thanks to the people involved in the
mission, especially the local volunteer
nurses.
Aside from the Medical team, the
group from Joliet also included a Construction and Outreach team. They were
able to construct bunkhouses in Pagbabangnan, San Julian, and provide roofing
materials for families in Bgy. Taclaon, Salcedo who lost their homes in the wrath of
typhoon Yolanda. This is not the first time
that the construction team was in Eastern
Samar. They had been building houses
for the homeless in different communities
here during the previous missions.
To mark the tenth year of the BKMM,
the volunteers from Borongan organized
a fun run for a cause. About 200 people
joined the run to raise funds for Yolanda
victims. The group also distributed relief
goods to typhoon victims in Balangkayan.

The heavy rain last February 22, 2014,
Saturday did not prevent almost a thousand members of the Couples for Christ
and its Family Ministries, the Handmaids
of the Lord (HOLD), Servants of the Lord
(SOLD), Singles for Christ (SFC), Youth for
Christ (YFC) and the Kids for Christ (KFC)
of Eastern Samar to flock together for the
2014 Evangelization Rally at the Eastern
Samar National Comprehensive High
School in Borongan City. The whole day
activity had its theme “Behold and Ponder” taken from John 19:26 and Luke 2:51.
The highlight of the affair was the
Eucharistic Celebration held in the afternoon, celebrated by Bishop Crispin B.
Varquez, DD, with Rev. Fr. John Alcantara
as co-celebrant with three deacons, Rev.
Dindo Catalo, Rev. Rommel Arce, and Rev.
Michael Bormate. Bishop Varquez prompts
us that now is the Year of Laity and that
we have the power as laities to transform
the world and bring Christ’s kingdom.
He called it “Laity Power”, stressing the
Filipino catholic laity: Choose to be Brave,
Called to be Saints, and Sent Forth as Heroes.
In his homily, Bishop Varquez said,
“we are all called by God to proclaim His
love, to show our heroism as heroes of our
Christian faith.”

gave talks on “Behold and Ponder”. Bro.
Charlie Laiz, CFC Regional Coordinator
for Borneo Missions and Country Coordinator of East Timor talked on “Ponder”.
Bro. Charlie Laiz said that “like Mary, we
will have to look for Jesus wherever our
search leads us. With detachment and
hope, our search will bring us to the temple, to the truth that Jesus is the only solid
ground in which we must root our lives.
Our search leads us, as did Mary’s own, to
the Fathers house, to a way of life in union
with Jesus.” He also said, “Mother Mary
pondered on the events of her life and
hoped, leaving everything to God.” The
second talk, “Beyond” was given by Bro.
Gerry Mariscal, Provincial Area Head of
CFC Biliran and former Provincial Area
Head of Eastern Samar. He said, “may the
life of Mary be our guide in making our response to God’s call. Fear not, when God
calls, God provides and God sustains.”
Bro. Willy Padida, the new Provincial
Area Head of Eastern Samar who came
with wife, Sol gave a mini talk and exhortation for the First Fruit Offering, a yearly
practice of CFC that started November
2003. “Offering stands for good health,
strength, skills and capabilities, livelihood and for the community, offering is
for the protection,” a part of Bro. Willy’s
exhortation.
The Evangelization Rally started with
a parade from Baybay Boulevard to the
venue and followed by a Rosary Procession led by Bro. Ruben Amboy, Chapter
Head of Borongan with the Area Governance Team, Cluster Heads, Provincial
Couple Coordinators of the Family Ministries and the Chapter Heads. The affair
was formally opened through an Opening
Worship led by Bro. Willy Puno, Cluster
Head of Central A, from San Julian, Sulat
to Borongan. His exhortation gave encouragement to the Yolanda survivors not to
lose hope and be thankful for the love of
God through the love of people around
the world. Bro. Ruding Carpeso, member
of the Area Governance Team led the Afternoon Worship.
Welcome messages were given by
Rev. Fr. Leroy R. Geli on behalf of the Parish. He shared St. Agustine’s thoughts, “we
must learn tohave reflection and meditate
to have appreciation of God.” Bro. Roger
Chua welcomed the participants on behalf
of CFC Area Governance Team. He said,
“Step back to silence our lives, to examine where we are now, and where we are
heading.”
The affair was enliven by the songs of
the CFC Borongan Music Ministry, chant
by the SFC and presentations by the YFC
and CFC Taft.
The Evangelization Rally ended with
a Praisefest led by SFC James Estor. The
lively hosts of the affair was the tandem
of Bro. Etoy and LynLyn Mengote, Cluster
Leaders of Upper North, from San Policarpo to Arteche.

ILLUMINATION—
HOW DID THE EARLY ESTEHANONS
LIGHT THEIR HOUSES? Many Estehanons
tend to think that before the advent of
electricity, our forebears used candles
and, later on, kerosene lamps. Candles,
however, are part of our Spanish heritage.
It was the Spanish missionaries who introduced the use of beeswax to make them.
But long before Catholic priests came to
our shore, the early Estehanons used AGUIPOT (or AGUIPO) to illumine their huts
and houses. How was an “aguipot” made?
Using anahaw or the tender leaf of coconuts, they ordinarily formed a long cylindrical countainer into which was pressed
down the crushed resin from the “pili”
tree. (There were variations in making it,
of course.) In the 1800s, many still preferred to use “aguipot” to candles or oil
lamps, because it was much cheaper than
the latter. In many villages during the Second World War in the island (1941-1945),
Estehanons generally used “aguipot” in
evening celebrations, as in fiestas; it was
easy to make and did not cost a centavo.

SJN celebrates feast day in sympathy for Yolanda survivors

Agricultural production remains the
best solution to the problem on malnutrition here, so said the province’s nutrition
officers, during the recently held Nutrition
Program Management Planning Workshop.
The workshop participants who came
from the different municipal local government units (MLGUs) made their wish list
cum proposals after they have dissected the
problem on malnutrition with the use of the
problem tree.
Food production listed the top most
remedy in the overall analysis of malnutrition problem which was pegged in the 2012
data at 10.7%.
It was likewise reported that farm inputs come inadequate for the farmers to
achieve a sufficient harvest at the municipal
and barangay levels.
According to the Municipal Agricultural Officers(MAO) who are also the designated nutrition officers, farmers have aired
their need for seeds but since these are
costly, many of them could hardly buy. Labor cost comes next as an expensive input,
and a poor farmer could barely expand his
plantations because he remains dependent
on his own manual labor with his family’s.
Technology and farm mechanization likewise remain a far-fetched dream of many
farmers here.
“Because of these necessities in farming, many farmers could not produce and
contribute to the vegetable needs of many
families”, Sally Jabinal, Provincial Action Officer said. “and
for these reasons, the vegetables sold
in the market, even poultry products are
mostly imported from nearby and far provinces which are equally expensive.
On the other hand, Ms. Teri Orisa, member of the Provincial Nutrition Council(PNC)
believes otherwise.
According to her,
sometimes it is the indolence of many Filipinos that is contributory to inadequate food
production here. She added, that the unpredictable climate and weather condition likewise add to the farmers’ idleness.
At the provincial level, Provincial Agriculturist, Mr. Regalado Opeña and his staff
has maintained a demo farm in barangay
San Jose . But it has yet to be expanded to
produce more Lettuce, Squash, Eggplants,
Ampalaya and a lot more. The OPAS-products have somehow addressed to the vegetable demand of a hundreds of households,
it being a demo-farm.

by Yolanda can be transferred to a stronger
house to become their permanent homes as
soon as possible.
Other ZOA representative who witnessed the signing of MOU were Geke Keift,
Communication Officer, Gerard Schoemaker,
Shelter Technical Adviser and Tito Revereal,
Project Manager.
ZOA is also committed to help the Hernani LGU with livelihood and education.
In closing, Orisa and Jabinal agreed
that the support of the local chief executives
down to the barangay level will be most
effective in curbing the problem on malnutrition. The municipal action officer or
an institutionalized nutrition council at the

Hernani typhoon survivors to get shelters from INGO

The Hernani Local Government Unit
(LGU) and Zuid-Oost Azie (ZOA), a humanitarian organization based in Apeldoorn,
Netherlands inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) just recently at Hernani, E.
Samar, one of the area that were hardest hit
by typhoon Yolanda.
Hernani Mayor Edgar C. Bojo signed
the MOU and on the part of ZOA was Mr. Jeff
Cosico, the ZOA Country Representative.
According to Mr. Jeff Cosico, in a brief
interview, their purpose is to bring people
from tent to a more secured shelter the soonest possible time. It was stated that the project will particularly construct two hundred
units of one-room shelter for the families affected by typhoon Yolanda.
It is also stipulated in the MOU that the
Hernani LGU and ZOA mutually agree to
implement the construction of two hundred
units where one hundred twenty to one hundred thirty units will be in Brgy. Batang and
the remaining units will be in another identified community where there are still families
who are in need for housing.
As agreed in the MOU, Hernani LGU will
help identify and recruit chainsaw operators
and skilled carpenters, identify possible depot for construction materials in the location,

Tambakan ALS learners get help from media

Some 35 learners under the Alternative
Learning Scheme (ALS) received recently,
packs of school supplies, hygiene kits and
used clothings from some members of the
provincial media.
These ALS learners get their modular
instructions inside a makeshift classroom that
is situated at the middle of the former City
Dump Site, in barangay Camada, about six
kilometres south of the city.
The learners aging seven to 81, include
mothers, some of their children, fathers and
some are grandparents and they all use individual modules.
For more than a decade now, despite
the not-so-child-friendly environment, the
parents opted to have built their shanties
around the area and remain there, because
of the measly daily income they expect from
scavenging the remaining trashes and waste
materials from the abandoned dumpsite.
With their extra size boots, the childrenlearners ran from their sorting activity to
receive their plastic envelopes filled with
school paraphernalia that each media practitioner here, shared with them. Girls who
manifest early adolescent period were all
smiles to receive hygiene kits, which included sanitary napkins and soap.
It was learned that three of the young
learners are orphaned, the father having
been shot to death, the mother at large in the
greater Manila area. They now live with their
elderly grandfather and uncle who, could
hardly support their basic needs as well.
In her message to the learners, Ms. Sentay Quitorio, Media Bureau Chief, Provincial
LGU told the children not to lose hope and
that, their future will be brighter if they
would remain enthusiastic and steadfast in
finishing their modules, instead of focusing
most of their time in sorting for anything
saleable from the trash. She also promised to
send to high school, the first one to finish the
elementary level with ALS.
According to DepEd City Division ALS
Supervisor Junilou Dulfo, at the start, the ALS
program at the “Tambakan” received all sorts
of criticisms like, being in the midst of a stinky
environment. But he said, as a teacher, who
likewise began from humble beginnings, he
felt for the children who have no opportunity
to get their basic 3’Rs.
He added, that such is the current thrust
of DepEd to give learning opportunities for
all, rich and poor up to the jail inmates.
The ALS Classroom was realized from
donations: recycled G.I sheets, plywood and
sand as flooring.
“We look for the illiterates to offer them
free education, in fact we just came from far
