it takes the name of God in vain and perverts it to serve a wicked ideology. One
final request. Think twice before pointing your finger at us and accusing us of
insulting Islam. For I wish to remind you that some of those about you might
consider such an accusation [as indicating] a target.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Members:
During
the
last
few
months, our community
has had several religious,
social, educational and
life celebration events.
However, there are four
recent activities that will
remain in our minds for a lifetime. The first one
was on April 24, 2009 when two elementary
school classmates and lifetime friends, Brenda
Blumin and Aida Lubin Roisman decided to
organize a celebration for their, as well as their
classmates 60th birthdays, as a weekend cruise
aboard the Majesty of the Seas. It was a very
emotional event for those who were born in
1949, and attended El Centro Israelita de Cuba,
or graduated from Miami Beach Senior High
School in 1967. They call themselves the
Meshuganuts Jewbans 49ers and they have not
stopped celebrating since April. The class
members living in Miami were joined by those
from New York, San Juan, Dallas and Quito,
Ecuador. The second event was the Shabbat
Service celebrating the 50th anniversary of the
first high school graduating class of El Centro
Israelita, also a very beautiful and emotionally
charged morning on June 6. Those who
graduated in 1959 were teenagers then and are
of Social Security age now. The emotions
continued when the following Tuesday
afternoon, June 9, we celebrated the graduation
of more than a dozen of our Montessori School
children. What a beautiful event to see these
happy 5-6 year olds receive their first diplomas,
as they sang and danced in the presence of
their proud parents, relatives, friends, and their
school teachers. It has been a source of
tremendous joy to see these children grow both
physically and mentally during these past years
at our school.
The fourth event just took place this past
Shabbat July 25, 2009 listening to the beautiful
chanting of Cantor Steve Texon, and Bal Koreh
Jacques Malka, and the presentations made on
behalf of the Women’s League and the Board of
Directors by Tere Ben-Hain and Billy Babil
thanking Rabbi Mayer Abramowitz on his last
Shabbat at our pulpit, since he has announced
his retirement. It was a Shabbat filled with mixed
emotions, as it is the Rabbi’s desire to spend
more time with his family, but it was a sad day
for our Congregation.
Rabbi Abramowitz’s commitment and dedication
to our community for the last 50 years will
always be recognized, appreciated and
remembered. He may be retiring from the pulpit,
but he will never cut his connection to this

Cuban Jewish Community, his extended family,
that he loves so much. Many times we wonder
how Rabbis can lead the lives they live, a
balancing act when they have very little time for
their own families or themselves. God built the
world in six days and rested on Shabbat, but for
Rabbis there is no day of rest. There is always a
Congregational activity, or a member’s life cycle
event to attend, in addition to preparing and
delivering sermons, teach, and attend other
community events.
For this reason it is very important that our
entire community participate on Saturday, Aug
15, 2009 in “Noche Tropical,” an evening that
will be filled with happiness, singing by Jazmin,
dancing, and of course, delicious Kosher Cuban
American food. We will be honoring the two
individuals who have given so much to our
community for so many decades, Rabbi
Abramowitz and Ofelia Ruder. We will also
show the short video of the history of our
Community from our humble beginning in Cuba
to our success in Miami, the first video of its
kind. Become a Co-Producer of this historical
presentation. Please call your relatives and
friends and reserve your table. We must fill to
capacity the Olemberg Ballroom. The entire
Board of Directors and the Women’s League
looks forward to greeting every one of you that
night.
Social Work Professors, Drs. David Strug of
Yeshiva University and Heidi Heft LaPort of City
University of New York, who have attended
several of our recent events, are amazed at the
extraordinary level of connectedness and sense
of community love that we show for one another
so many decades after leaving Cuba. In their
professional experiences, they have never seen
any other community that has gone through the
trauma we went through and still have such a
woven social fabric. We should all be very proud
of our accomplishments, and be determined to
maintain this closeness for current and future
generations. Professors Strug and LaPorte are
currently doing the research of the experiences
of the Cuban Jewish Pedro Pan kids and expect
to write a book on our experiences as children
and early teenagers then and as parents and
grandparents now. If you are a parent,
foster-parent or a community member who was
between the ages of 6 and 17 in 1960-1962,
when you left Cuba, they may be interested in
interviewing you.

There is Life in Retirement
On a Shabbat morning back in 1993 after I
retired from Temple Menorah, I was sitting in
shul (Temple Menorah) davening. Sitting next
to me was an old friend from the Cuban Hebrew
Congregation. He leaned over to me and asked,
“Would you like to be our rabbi?”
“Would I like!” I quietly responded, not even
trying to hide my enthusiasm. “Being retired is
great but the pulpit is greater,” I added.
A week or two later, I was invited to be
interviewed by the Temple’s board at its next
meeting. I don’t recall any of the many questions
asked of me, but I do recall that a spirit of
friendship and amicability pervaded at that
session.
At the end of the meting, I was about to walk out
when one of the members jokingly called out in
Yiddish, “Er iz nisht azey shlecht vi mir hoben
geklert ... He’s not as bad as we had thought.”
My year at CHC was a very productive year.
Starting with the Yom Kippur appeal for bonds,
we set a record of slightly over one million
dollars. During the year that followed, our Late
Friday Night Service was both a prayer session
and a socializing session. As evidence I cite
what someone said about me to Rachel, “Er iz a
guter rebbi ober er lozt nit shlofen. He’s a good
rabbi but he doesn’t let anyone sleep.”
It was a remarkable year for me. And I was quite
flattered when, at the time, I was offered a
lifetime contract. At age seventy one, I did not
want to commit myself, especially when I was
deep in my writing career.

But, about twelve years later, at age 86, I
eagerly accepted to be the interim rabbi -- only
for the High Holy Days -- at the CHC. My
“Interim Rabbinate” lasted two and a half years.
And I have enjoyed every minute during those
years as old friends became new friends.
Children at whose Bar Mitzvahs I had officiated
were now having children of their own. Couples
whom I married, were now preparing for the
marriage of their children. Throughout these
years, Cuban
Colony lavished their love upon
Rachel and me and we could only reciprocate
emotionally to such affection.
So, if it was so good, why am I retiring? The
answer should be obvious to you, my beloved
congregation. As I approach my 90th birthday, I
realize that I need to be with my family. To
Rachel and me, being with the family means to
celebrate with them Shabbat, Yom Tov, and, of
course, to be with the family on all family
occasions.
As I leave the rabbinate, it does not mean that I
am totally leaving behind the old and new
friendships we have created these past two and
a half years. I shall ever be grateful to everyone
at the CHC for making my retirement years
productive years.
I close this brief “Good Bye” message by
invoking God to help the congregation
overcome the present critical days. May you
have a brilliant future as you had in creating a
brilliant past, building the Cuban Hebrew
Congregation.

MONTESSORI SCHOOL
Message from the School Committee
As another year came to an end, we can only say how amazing Temple Beth Shmuel Montessori School
has become since our doors opened five years ago. We are proud of our school’s continued growth,
awareness and success. We have big admiration for our wonderful dedicated staff under the leadership
of our Directress Rebeca Krys. TBS Montessori has accomplished so much from our academic studies,
Judaic programs and community involvements with all our Mitzvah Projects. Every child has his/her
success story as they finish the year. This is our biggest success at the Montessori School ---- the
students. We are very excited about the introduction of new programming and activities for next year.
And we are looking forward to seeing our Montessori families join us during the High Holidays and in
many Temple activities for the upcoming year.
Our community is blessed with the smiles of the Montessori children.

WOMEN’S LEAGUE
Message from the Women’s League
As every year, we celebrated Mother’s Day with
a special Shabbat Services program on
Saturday, May 9th in our sanctuary, filled with
songs by Cantor Texon, including Madrecita del
Alma Querida, followed by a lovely Kiddush
luncheon served in our cocktail room. Services
were attended by a multitude of members and
their families who were really enjoying
themselves. We followed this event with a
celebration of Father’s Day on June 20th, where
again we all participated in a very inspiring and
uplifting Shabbat service conducted by Cantor
Texon. We heard speeches by Sergio Grobler
and Tere Ben-Hain about what Father’s Day
mean to each and every one of us. A very
appetizing luncheon that included cholent was
served after.
Women’s League works very hard to publish a
journal for both occasions. It is the response of
our members that helps us raise funds for our
causes and one that we need to acknowledge
by Tere Ben-Hain
and be grateful. We appreciate all your support,
both morally and monetarily, and hope that you,
our members, will continue to endorse.
In late May, we held our annual luncheon for the
women in our community. It was a great
success as women gathered in our cocktail
room to have fun and a good time during the
afternoon. Those women that attended will
remember a great and enjoyable get-together.
We will do it again next year and want all of you
out there to come and join us and you will know
what we are talking about.
We are a great group of women that work
together for the good of our Temple and would
like to welcome new members to join us and
contribute their ideas as well as their time. It is
great and rewarding and something that will
make you feel good inside when you give back
to the community.
Women’s League will be conducting a Hannukah Toy Drive
during the next 5 months till the end of the year.
Please make your donations in the form of cash, check,
or a brand new unwrapped toy (any age)
to be donated to JAFCO – Jewish Adoption and Foster Care Options – Organization.
We will be placing boxes especially designated for this toy drive around the temple.
Cash or checks should be given or mailed to the office staff for this purpose.
JAFCO will be sending us a WISH LIST prepared by the children
at their facilities and we will try to comply with their wishes.
Please make your donations early to make sure that all children celebrate a
HAPPY HANNUKAH!.

Women’s League held our annual luncheon on
Wednesday, May 27th, 2009 in our cocktail
room. We had a big turnout of women from all
over the community. Everyone came to enjoy
themselves and to share with their friends a
wonderful afternoon.
We visited their location here in South Florida
and continued to admire their work after
seeing their facilities and hearing of their
accomplishments. Here are some pictures of
what we saw and the bags that we donated.
We were entertained by Harmonic Motion
starring Myriam Eli who danced and performed
to the music played by Joe Zeytoonian. As
usual, we ate and had an amazing time. We
held the annual raffle as well as raffled a number of prizes that were donated by several individuals and businesses in our community.

As you may have noticed, if you attended, we
filled colored bags with different items and
placed them on each table as centerpieces.
These bags were filled with toys, clothing,
books, etc., all children’s items, to be donated
afterwards to the JAFCO – Jewish Adoption and
Foster Care Options – Organization located in
Broward County. This organization was brought
to our attention by Josefina Epelbaum, a
member of our Board, and we thought it was a
great mitzvah to contribute a little bit of
goodness to an organization that does so much
for the children and their families in our
community.

First Cuban Hebrew Congregation Concert Series

worked hard and diligently to make this wonderful afternoon of music a success.
Our Second Concert is scheduled for Saturday,
September 5th at 8:15 p.m. at our Main
Sanctuary with what should be another great
Concert by Violinist/Violist Michael Klotz and
Cellist Jason Calloway and our Artistic Director/
Pianist Paul Posnak. Please save the date so
you don’t miss a very enjoyable evening.
The beautiful music, mixed in with his very
humorous anecdotes and informative
recollections of the history of the Composers
and the meaning of the Music that he was
playing, kept the audience enthralled and
entertained.
The audience, which included members of our
Temple and music lovers from the community at
large, was very responsive with their
applause and appreciative of the high quality of
the Concert, which was proven by the
comments while they enjoyed Cuban guava
pastries and refreshments during the
intermission and after the performance.
It was a very pleasurable afternoon for everyone
in attendance.

The Right to Criticize Islam
The first quote: “Ayaan Hirsi
Ali, the Somali born Dutch
parliamentarian who was issued a
death sentence for fighting against
the oppression of women in Islam,
in her book J’accuse :”Two out of
three wars in the world are fought
in the name of Islam. The notion
that Islam is a religion of peace is
without basis in fact.” Second
quote: Wafa Sultan, Syrian
psychologist, in an interview on Al
Jazeera: “Only Muslims defend
their beliefs by burning down
churches, murdering people and
destroying embassies. This path
will give no result. Muslims should
ask themselves what they can do
for Humanity, before asking
Humanity to respect them.” She
lives under a death threat. Third
quote: Fadela Amara, Muslim of
Algerian origin and president of the
French movement “Neither Whores
nor Submissive”: I am a believing
Muslim and I consider the veil an
instrument of oppression against
women.”
I could add to the names of these
women many others whose
struggle for freedom in the heart of
Islam has forced them to live under
threat. None of them insulted that
religion, but all were accused of
insulting it. The first and worst thing
that we find when we try to hold a
calm debate about Islam is the
demonization of critical thought,
and always in the mouths of those
who arrogate unto themselves the
role of universal spokespersons
and who present Islam as an anti
dialectic and a historical dogma.
Years ago I wrote that Islam needs
to have a Voltaire. Seeing the
response that Ms. Ndeye Andújar
dedicates to me, an ad hominem
attack (she kills the messenger
twisting me into an entity filled with
prejudices), and how she turns
my critical arguments into insults
of Islam, I consider it all the
more urgent to appeal to the
Enlightenment. I rebel against that
sickness of thought that bases the
truth of its arguments on the
negation of any debate. I rebel
because it is a manichaean and
antidemocratic posture. Maybe
Andujar is afraid of free thought (it’s
good to read Fromm), but she will
not be able to keep, in spite of her
demonization, some of us from
being seriously critical with modern
day Islam.
A fundamental note. No matter how
much she tries, she will not find a
single insult of Islam in any text of
mine. I profoundly respect the
beliefs of each person and,
although I am cut from rationalist
cloth, I don’t believe faith to be the
source of the problem. But she
will indeed find many worried
reflections on the perverted use of
religion to advance a totalitarian
ideology that today, in the name
of Islam, educates people in
fanaticism, suicidal nihilism and
scorn for women. If Ms. Ndeye
Andujar wants to find and call
attention to those who insult Islam,
I advise her to look at home. I’ll
give her a few ideas. Those who
teach their children to be suicide
bombers severely insult Islam.
Those who establish laws that
enslave woman insult Islam. Those
who teach anti-Semitism,
anti-Westernism and scorn for
liberty, all insult Islam. Those who
use 21st century technology to
connect to the Middle Ages insult
Islam. Those who encourage
children to flagellate themselves
to the point of delirium to
commemorate someone who
disappeared centuries ago insult
Islam. And yes, they too insult
Islam who from Western mosques
encourage the covering of their
women, the sending of young men
to Iraq or consider democracy an
evil of the infidel.
Didn’t she know that this takes
place in French and Spanish
mosques? I invite her to read some
reports, or even to learn the
reasons for the expulsion of certain
imams from France. All the
mosques? Of course not. To be
sure, there exists a progressive and
democratic view of Islam. But along
side it and flourishing, there lives
a regressive, fanatical and
anti-modern view. This view, to the
misfortune of all of us, has a lot of
power and receives a lot of money.

And this view,
by the way, has
a
particular
obsession
with
imposing the veil,
an unmistakable
metaphor for the
d e n i al
of
a
woman’s freedom.
We could discuss other issues. For
example,
Ndeye Andujar claims that the
Islamic University of Al-Azhar
denies the Koranic validity of
female circumcision. But she
chooses to forget that there are
scholars in the same university who
support it. And she also forgets that
in Al-Azhar are nourished certain
fundamentalist Koranic readings
that have done the most ideological
harm. Founders of the Egyptian
Brotherhood, from Hassan
al-Banna to Sayid Qutb or Yussef
al-Qardawi, have drunk from its
springs. And its textbooks, a
model of the most totalitarian
fundamentalist currents, make up
the readings for the majority of
Islamic centers in Europe. So, the
topic isn’t so neat and pretty after
all.
Instead of trying to demonize those
of us who take pen in hand to
denounce abuses made in the
name of Islam, the Ndeyes of the
world hereabouts would do well to
apply their own energies to
combating them.
We women who defend liberty are
not Islam’s enemy. The enemy is in

a wicked ideology. One final
request. Think twice before pointing
your finger at us and accusing us of
insulting Islam. For I wish to remind
you that some of those about you
might consider such an accusation

AMIA, 18-J: quince años de infamia
Cuando llega el decimoquinto
aniversario del criminal ataque
integrista que asesino a 85
inocentes y mutilo a cientos de
personas en Buenos Aires, es
frecuente que todas las víctimas
del terrorismo experimenten, una
sensación de impunidad tan brutal
como el atentado en si, ello puede
ir desde sentir en días anteriores al
aniversario una mayor irritabilidad,
tristeza, desazón o desesperanza,
hasta experimentar episodios de
ansiedad de mayor o menor
gravedad. Las sensaciones que los
familiares han ido experimentando
desde el momento del atentado
transitan muchos factores
personales, pero también sociales
y solo ellos saben realmente lo que
se siente.
Esta sensación de desconfianza y
desesperanza que se convierte en
desesperación en la que muchos
caen irremediablemente en un
túnel profundo del que solamente
se sale con grandes esfuerzos
personales y con mucho apoyo,
genera también en algunas
personas una energía renovada
para luchar y continuar con el
reclamo de justicia. Algunas
personas, lamentablemente, no
consiguen reponerse nunca y su
mente queda petrificada en aquel
horrible día, convirtiendo el resto
de su vida en un mero ejercicio de
supervivencia.
Como sobreviviente, en otro
tiempo, de lo que la barbarie
terrorista provoca, conozco de las
inimaginables preguntas sin
respuesta en las víctimas: ¿Por
qué a mí?, ¿Cómo es posible que
alguien me haga daño?, e incluso,
una de las más horribles: ¿Seré
merecedor de este castigo? Y así,
hasta en ocasiones, caer en una
espiral en la que la propia víctima
puede llegar a entender a sus
verdugos, e incluso llegar a
justificarlos. El sentimiento de
indefensión después de un
atentado es tal que algunas
personas pierden la perspectiva de
que la vida valga para algo o de
que se pueda hacer algo para
controlarla.
Por
si
todo
esto
fuera poco,
durante muchos años no han
faltado quienes desde los
diferentes gobiernos argentinos,
los estrados judiciales y
pseudo-organizaciones de
derechos humanos -- que han
sostenido que los muertos de la
AMIA “eran Judíos”, como si
por eso merecieran morir -han dejado de lado a las
víctimas, produciéndose casos
especialmente flagrantes de
v i c t im i zac io ne s s e c u nda r ia s
realizadas por parte de
instituciones democráticas, que, en
realidad, en vez de proteger a las
víctimas se han dedicado, con su
inacción y omisión, a veces rayana
en la connivencia, a justificar,
comprender, entender o disculpar a
los verdugos. Solo en ese marco
se entiende que la Republica
Argentina no haya roto sus
relaciones bilaterales con la
Republica Islámica de Irán.
Pero cuando llegan las fechas
conmemorativas, se celebran con
frecuencia aniversarios y
homenajes, se organizan grandes
ceremonias con mucha presencia
de políticos y personalidades, y se
pronuncian discursos -- en no
pocas ocasiones “demagógicos” -aunque poco se sabe de las
personas a las que se homenajea.
Hablan las autoridades, pero se
escucha poco a las víctimas que
necesitan contar quién era su hija,
su hermano, su esposa o esposo.
Hay aquí algo muy importante que
con frecuencia se olvida. Todas las
víctimas tienen nombres y
apellidos: “Paola Czyzewski; Martín
Figueroa; Fabián Furman; Andrea
Guterman; Agustín Lew; Andrés
Malam ud; Fernando Pérez;
Olegario Ramírez; Mirta Strier;
Danilo Villaverde y setenta y cinco
nombres más...”
Por cada uno de ellos, es
es pecialmente neces ario el
r e c o no c i m i en t o y r ec ue r d o
personalizado, lo mismo que la
atención a las demandas de sus
familiares. Es preciso recordar. Es
necesario desde el punto de vista
social y personal para cada víctima
que los ciudadanos nunca se
olviden de ellas. Recordar para no
olvidar, recordar como compromiso
por George Chaya
ético y profundo de que “nunca
más” se debe permanecer
impávido ante el terrorismo global,
recordar que cada uno de los
asesinados tenía una vida.
Recordar en los aniversarios lo que
cada familiar recuerda todos los
días del ser amado arrebatado.
Recordar, para no olvidar que no
se puede ser comprensivo, que
no se puede ser correcto
políticamente ante el integrismo
criminal, que no se puede ser
neutral ante el terrorismo yihadista.
Que no se puede mirar hacia otro
lado ante un régimen teocrático e
imperialista como el Irán de los
mullah’s. Recordar que a pesar del
miedo, debemos acompañar
a los familiares que siguen
manteniéndose firmes sin dejarse
intimidar. Y recordar, en fin, que
aquéllos que se han convertido en
héroes a la fuerza eran todos
personas de a pie, gente corriente,
hombres, mujeres y niños que un
día de julio de 1994 abordaron un
autobús, subieron a su automóvil,
se vistieron con su uniforme de
escuela, o prepararon su almuerzo
para ir a su empleo, bajaron con su
mochila las escaleras de su casa y
fueron vilmente arrebatados de la
vida de sus seres amados para
siempre, aunque nunca de sus
corazones, ni de nuestra memoria.

Existe otro Irán, y está en este
Habló el líder supremo, el gran
ayatolá Ali Jamenei, mentó a
Dios, y el mundo se paró.
Después de sus palabras
asegurando que la victoria –
muy probablemente fraudulenta
– de Ahmadineyad en las
elecciones iraníes era "una
señal divina", y que debía ser
aceptada también "por mandato
divino", sólo quedaba repetir el
obligado (a la fuerza) saludo
ante su presencia: "Dios le
guarde. Saludo al Imán", y
aceptar la lógica del miedo.
¿Qué más se podía añadir? En
las democracias funciona esa
peregrina cosa llamada libertad,
cuyas patas en la libertad
de prensa, de expresión, de
asamblea, de oposición, y
etcétera, dotan de una
importante protección a los
ciudadanos.
A pesar de ello, a pesar del
miedo, a pesar del récord de
condenas a muerte, a pesar de
que la teocracia iraní es una de
las más inflexibles que existen
en el mundo, miles de personas
recordaron a ese mundo, tan
sordo, que Irán es un gran
país, con una población
históricamente resistente,
políticamente comprometida y
socialmente activa. Alguna
vez he escrito que la gran
esperanza de Oriente Medio es,
precisamente, la oposición
ir aní, c uyas m uj er es y
estudiantes son, hoy por hoy,
las voces más activas contra la
imposición fundamentalista.
Desde la premio Nobel Shirin
Ebadi hasta los movimientos
estudiantiles, algo intenso y
libre se mueve en el Irán
brutalmente oprimido por la
revolución de los ayatolás.
Y por ello mismo Irán
representa una sorprendente
contradicción: es el peligro más
importante de la región, y
también su mayor esperanza.
Esperanza, sin embargo,
nuevamente truncada. Desde

que el ayatolá Jomeini pisó
Irán, en 1979, ese gran país del
golfo Pérsico, poseedor de una
épica histórica y una cultura
muy notables, cayó en un
profundo agujero oscuro, que
lo arrancó de la modernidad,
lo sepultó en un alud de
leyes represivas, condenó a
sus mujeres al ostracismo y
protagonizó algunos de los
episodios más vergonzosos
de la historia reciente.
Ahmadineyad es el último
escalafón de una política
delirante, cuyo desprecio a su
propia gente va parejo al
desprecio que siente por los
valores universales. Y, sin
ninguna duda, es una amenaza
para millones de personas.
Lo cual no es tan sorprendente
si recordamos la actitud
de Chamberlain con Hitler.
¿Hubiera parado Europa a un
Hitler nuclear, cuando
practicaba el apaciguamiento?
Y
en
eso
estamos,
apaciguados, incapaces de
entender que la tragedia de los
iraníes oprimidos por la tiranía
jomeinista es algo más que un
grito en la oscuridad. Es el
aviso desesperado de una seria
amenaza.
Pero Ahmadineyad es, en
realidad, una marioneta en las
manos del gran ayatolá,
auténtico dictador del país,
cuya tiranía se fundamenta en
el monopolio que hace de la
religión islámica. Poseedor de
la verdad religiosa, es el
ejemplo, en pleno siglo XXI, de
lo que debió ser la Inquisición
española. Con la diferencia de
que llevamos siglos alejados de
la Edad Media.

¿Qué más puede pasar para
que Irán esté en la primera
línea de la preocupación
del mundo? Lejos de ello,
practicam os una pérfida
condescendencia. Veamos:
Irán condena a muerte a los
ciudadanos homosexuales, y la
ONU invita a su presidente –un
inequívoco islamofascista– a
hablar en un foro sobre la
intolerancia. Mantiene en
apartheid a sus mujeres, y
las grandes feministas de
izquierdas ignoran su tragedia.
Amenaza con la destrucción
total a otro país, y Obama
quiere tener una charlita. Se
prepara para tener armamento
nuclear, y la mayoría de países
miran a otro lado, cuando no
participan de su desarrollo.
