There are numerous avenues, which can
lead to creation of theme and character.
Most important is the definition of an
identity which promotes a desired image
and which projects a sense of place.

The role that the landscape architect
can play is to lead a focused discussion
of the landscape that reflects issues of
aesthetics and function regarding aspects

Friendship Haven
Fort Dodge, IA
Friendship Haven hired Damon Farber Associates to assist with the development of a
master plan to replace over 200 units of nursing along with assisted and independent
living on their 60 acre Fort Dodge campus. We worked closely with the administration
and the project architect on phasing plans that resulted in the least amount of disruption
to residents while still achieving a final campus design that made sense for many years
to come. Issues of circulation, wayfinding and landscaping were addressed to provide a
quality first impression of the overall development and create a recognizable ‘front door’.
The resulting master plan is organized around a ‘main street’ that provides a clear sense
of organization for the campus and a unique campus entry experience. The plan is able
to acheive separation of service traffic and resident traffic, provide convenient parking for
visitors, and link the various campus destinations with wellness trails and underground
tunnels.
Construction is set to begin in 2010 for this exciting project.

Melrose Institute
St. Louis Park, Minnesota
Melrose Institute is a world class facility designed to treat patients with eating disorders.
The City of St. Louis Park and Park Nicollet asked Damon Farber Associates (DFA) to
lead the master planning phase of the project to incorporate the Melrose Institute onto a
shared piece of land that will be home to a potential future public facility, public trails and
possible sculpture garden. DFA worked collaboratively with all parties to insure that the
buildings, parking and pedestrian circulation worked together harmoniously.
Park Nicollet asked DFA to lead the site planning effort related to the Melrose Institute
and to design a Therapeutic garden that would be on par with other international facilities.
DFA facilitated meetings with over 20 therapists and doctors, administrators, developers,
facility maintenance experts and the design team to arrive at a design that allowed for
one on one therapy sessions as well as group activities for up to 15 patients. The garden
incorporates a labyrinth, water feature, stone walls, comfortable seating, arbor structure,
garden plots for active participation in the garden and a donor’s plaza. The facility is
scheduled to be complete in the spring of 2009.

Minneapolis, Minnesota
The University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital Fairview is undergoing a 120 million
dollar expansion that will create a new presence on historic Riverside Avenue. Damon
Farber Associates created a landscape, playground and plazas that are intended to be
attractive and inviting spaces which provide comfort and sanctuary to hospital users. The
landscape blends the built environment and the site in a harmonious way that provides
both an aesthetic setting, as well as a functional facility.
The Landscape is inspired by the Mississippi River bluffs nearby with their limestone
terraces and naturalized plantings. The public realm of Riverside Avenue transitions
from a traditional streetscape and boulevard into a series of stepped terraces with
limestone walls that lead you into the site through a series of garden spaces toward the
main entry plaza. A children’s play area is incorporated within the landscape for use by
patients and their families. It is sensitively integrated to provide a link to public spaces
within the building as well as provide separation from the more public drop-offs and busy
streetscape of Riverside Avenue.

West Lakes Wellness Campus
Clive, Iowa
West Lakes Wellness Campus takes an integrated approach to Health Campus planning.
Damon Farber Associates was asked to lead the overall site planning and landscape
design effort for this unique campus. Five new medical office buildings and associated
parking were to be located on the Mercy Hospital campus. Damon Farber Associates
worked collaboratively with the architectural team and civil engineer to arrive at a site
plan that integrated storm water treatment into the plan as an amenity for campus users.
The buildings have been placed to help define an exterior courtyard and also provide
a clear interior circulation pattern. The courtyard provides a variety of spaces for quiet
conversation and reflection or for strolls with family members. The storm water becomes
a focal point within the garden as well as a buffer from the loop road on the east side
of the campus. The storm water culminates in an oval pond that defines the entry and
extends onto the Mercy hospital site. The overall plan reflects strategic thinking that will
allow future development to plug into a framework provided by the master plan.

Regions Hospital Expansion
St. Paul, Minnesota
Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota is undergoing a major expansion and asked Damon
Farber Associates to lead the design of the site. The hospital is located in downtown St.
Paul and is surrounded by busy streets. Wayfinding and clarity of organization were
significant considerations. The design of the site needed to develop welcoming drop-offs,
a variety of outdoor spaces for staff, patients and visitors, provide vehicular access to two
parking ramps and provide pedestrian connections to the surrounding neighborhood all
within a vehicular dominated site. The hospital is also located adjacent to the Minnesota
State Capital and is under the jurisdiction of the Capital Area Architectural and Planning
Board (CAAPB). Damon Farber Associates designed the landscape to sensitively address
historical issues as well as the functional, aesthetic and sustainability requirements.
The result is a network of paths and plazas that emphasize pedestrian safety. Decorative
paving, bollards, benches, site furnishings and a landscape that reinforce seasonal
change, all contribute to making a visitor’s experience different each time they are on
the Regions Hospital campus.

Mercy Medical Center - West Lakes
West Des Moines, Iowa
Mercy Medical Center-West Lakes is a new high-rise Hospital in West Des Moines,
Iowa. Damon Farber Associates worked with the hospital to develop an overall master
plan that would integrate with the proposed Wellness Center to the north. The exterior
improvements included; integration of storm water requirements, entry plazas, healing
garden, outdoor dining terrace and LEED certification.
Damon Farber Associates worked with the City to address tree preservation issues and the
City’s demanding landscape requirements. The result is a plan that balances vehicular
drop-off and parking ramp access with pedestrian safety and campus aesthetics. The
landscape uses native drought tolerant plant material and limited irrigation to achieve
LEED points and reduce future maintenance costs. Decorative paving, site furnishings
and landscaping define building entries. A healing/therapeutic garden is designed for
use by all users of the facility and incorporates fragrant and visually interesting plant
material. Storm water is weaved through the site as an organizing element and amenity
for pedestrians on campus.

The challenge for Damon Farber Associates was to create a concept to enhance an
existing site. By introducing a unifying and cohesive visual character it was possible to
create a sense of place to a site that was dominated by a large and aging building.
The site offered a variety of existing landscapes which had been neglected over time and
that provided a wonderful opportunity upon which to build. The design concept, which
was implemented by the owner’s landscape contractor, promotes welcome and intimacy.
This pedestrian oriented character is reflected through the introduction of sculpture,
special planting and site furnishings throughout the landscape and along a pathway
system that links the main building with a series of outdoor spaces for dining, passive
recreation and reflection. What was a tired campus has become a vibrant, functional
and aesthetic solution through a collaborative effort among the designers and the client.

Fairview Redwing
Redwing, Minnesota
The River Bluffs Business Park concentrates development on medical and high tech
business opportunities. The Signage Master Plan for River Bluffs focused on unifying
the natural characteristics of the Red Wing Bluffs with the high tech focus of the project.
Native limestone is the primary material used in signage, recalling the native geology and
architectural elements found in the historic downtown. Stainless steel is used on the
logo and lettering. These contrasting materials compliment each other well, reflecting
the color and texture indigenous to the region while evoking a high tech, progressive
image. The result creates a year round aesthetic that suggests a sense of welcome and
is a strong expression of community pride.

Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center - Mayo Clinic
Rochester, MN
The Mayo Clinic along with BWBR Architects and Damon Farber Associates added a
comprehensive wellness and fitness facility on its downtown campus. The facility, funded
through a generous gift from S. Daniel Abraham, an entrepreneur and philanthropist
of Palm Beach, Fla., and New York, will offer an expanded range of activities designed
to help Mayo Clinic’s employees improve their health and fitness, reduce stress and
implement beneficial lifestyle changes.
Entering from the campus’ extensive underground pedestrian circulation system, users
catch glimpses of multiple activity spaces including the pool, fitness area, running track
and group exercise areas. An open stairway carries individuals to the main lobby level,
where there is an extensive use of planters that move up and through the center core.
Outside, a sunken healing garden, designed by Damon Farber Associates is carved from
the southeast corner of the site to allow daylight to penetrate deep into the lowest level
of the facility.

Avera Cancer Institute
Sioux Falls, South Dakota
The Avera Cancer Institute in Sioux Falls South Dakota is currently in the design phase
and is a planned expansion to the already existing McKennan Hospital and ever-growing
health campus. The community was lacking a facility to locally treat cancer patients and
determined the need was great enough to support this new facility.
Damon Farber Associates worked closely with BWBR Architects to site the building and
continues to work with the site plan to accommodate the needed parking, stormwater
ponding, and pedestrian circulation on the site. Additionally, we have been developing
concepts for the two-thousand plus square foot interior healing garden space. Themed
concepts that provide a comforting and reflective environment are meant to provide a
space for contemplation and mental healing while local residents are patients at the
facility. Moving forward we will be developing green roof solutions for portions of the
building that will allow patients on upper floors to quickly step outside the facility on
beautiful summer days.

Woodwinds Health Campus Healing Garden
Woodbury, Minnesota
Woodwinds Health Campus is a stunning example of what the community, patients and
consumers and health care providers and can accomplish.
Woodwinds has changed the concept of patient-centered care to create a new health
care experience. Beautifully integrated with its wooded wetland surroundings, the
Healing Garden offers a calming distraction from the hurry and worry of everyday life. The
Discovery Garden creates an opportunity for patients and families to actively participate
in the garden. A gently, winding path leads to an Aspen Grove. In the spring new green
growth recommends a spiritual and visual awakening.
Native grasses and flowers heighten your senses to the year-round palette of Prairie
and Meadow gardens. The Moonlight Garden provides an opportunity for twilight strolls
through a stunning landscape of perennials, herbs and medicinal plants. A leisurely
stroll along the trail is a memorable and restorative experience.
