The DemoChat The Official 33rd Legislative District Democrats Newsletter Volume 4, Issue 3, March 2008 March General Meeting Monday, March 17, 2008 Normandy Park Congregational Church 19247 First Avenue South Normandy Park, Washington and build a strong party tied to making our community an even better place to live. Thanks, Tina Tina Orwall 33rd LD Chair AGENDA (Endorsements may be made at this meeting.) 6:30 p.m. 7:00 p.m. 7:15 p.m. 8:15 p.m. Welcome new members, interested citizens Call to order, approval of agenda and minutes Welcome new members and elect PCO’s Overview of the Delegation Process—Sharon Mast, DNC member/superdelegate Legislative Session Debrief—Senator Karen Keiser, Representative Dave Upthegrove, Representative Shay Schual-Berke and LAC updates. Legislative District Caucus Planning From the Chair Dear 33rd Democrat, Good news—in no more than 312 days George W. Bush will leave office. Who will replace him? As Democrats, will we keep this amazing grassroots momentum to ensure that we have a Democrat in the White House? Since Senator John McCain took the nomination for the Republican Party the stakes became even higher. His alignment with this administration’s foreign policy is quite strong. He supports the long term occupation of Iraq and has made multiple speeches over the last year on the dangers of Iran, including the need to use all means necessary to reduce this “potential threat”. The contrast between the Republican candidate and our Democrat candidates is stark in foreign policy and many other critical areas. On April 5th we will continue to celebrate democracy at our 33rd LD caucus. The next set of delegates will be elected and move on to the Congressional Caucus. Some of these delegates will be elected to the State Convention, and a few may go onto the National Convention. When we meet in April, let us come together to celebrate the fact that we do have two strong candidates. We also need to welcome new members who can be part of our team not only to elect the next president but to help re-elect our fine governor Our Values Elliot Spitzer, the so-called Mr. Clean governor of New York who vowed to clean up Albany, has been caught himself in a sex scandal. Over the course of several months, Spitzer patronized a prostitution ring and spent tens of thousands of dollars doing so. Now, members of both parties as well as New Yorkers in general are calling for his resignation. Larry Craig, senator from Idaho, was arrested as part of a sting operation for lewd conduct when he attempted to elicit sexual favors from an undercover cop. Craig pleaded guilty to the charges, then attempted to backpedal and save face. He has been admonished by the Senate Ethics Committee for his behavior (which included spending campaign funds to cover legal costs for this personal issue), and faces the Idaho governor removing him if he doesn’t resign as he originally pledged to do. Unethical behavior isn’t pinned to one party, nor does one party have the edge on principled approaches to life. Values are the most important core to a person, and to a party. And they are the hardest to follow. But you can guarantee that the person who follows their values, who doesn’t ignore them to enjoy pleasures or avoid pain, is the one person you really want to support. That is the person who won’t buckle under pressure from other members of their party. They won’t have a public face and a private life…the two are the same. And they won’t do anything and everything they can to secure the position they so desperately want. Because in the end, what’s really important is your values. Omaha Sternberg, DemoChat Editor 33rd District Democrats The Demo Chat 2008 Page 2 March 2008 Legislative Action Day Report Legislative Action Day was a huge success! We had a great turnout with over 130 in attendance from legislative districts all over King County.
