Der Leerstand dieses schrumpfenden
Dorfes im Süden Italiens, mit kaum
mehr als 1500 Einwohnern, wurde als
Potential gesehen: die Vielzahl von
leeren Räumen wurden als mögliche
Zimmer eines diffusen Hotel wahrgenommen.
Innerhalb eines Monats, mit der Hilfe
von mehr als 40 Freiwilligen aus dem
Dorf und einem Materialbudget von
10.000 Euro, wurden „Schlafzimmer“
und ein spezielles Badezimmer
entwickelt und gebaut. In der Nebensaison können diese von den Pratesi
als Erweiterung des öffentlichen
Raumes genutzt werden.
Das Million Donkey Hotel wird
nun von einem Verein der „local
heroes“ weitergeführt – aus
einem situationistischen Zugang
hat sich ein nachhaltiges Projekt
mit Einbezugnahme der lokalen
Ressourcen und Ökonomie
entwickelt.

How can we boost the microeconomy of a remote region that is
seeing a decline in its population?
When we were first invited to come to
Prata Sannita, a village in the Matese
regional park close to Naples, we
asked ourselves: couldn’t we perceive
this shrinking, 1500-person village
as a large, scattered hotel that still
had rooms available: the abandoned
spaces?
In just one month we were able to
recruit up to 40 volunteers to work
with us on site. Using very straightforward methods, we excavated
spaces from the abandoned architecture of the medieval village,
reactivating them as “hotel rooms”
and a special “bathroom”, which
can be used by the Pratesi as an
extension of the public space during
the “off-season”.
