DAY 5 | 27th Nov, 2011
IDPA SEES A NEW ERA FOR SHORT AND DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKERS
D
oordarshan is to telecast award-winning and acclaimed documentaries,
short fiction, and animation films at
prime time on Sunday mornings from January 2012, following a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian Documentary
Producers Association, the oldest organization of documentary and short filmmakers in
the country. The films will be telecast on
Doordarshan’s National Channel and later repeated on DD News, DD Bharati, and the International DD India channel.
This was stated by IDPA President Mike
H Pandey who emphasized that while priority will be given to members of IDPA, the slot
would be open to all documentary and short
filmmakers. The programmes will be acquired/commissioned by IDPA from independent producers. The aim was to promote
the independent documentary film movement
in India, and empower independent producers
to work up to the best international standards.
The MoU signed for a period of five years
has been facilitated by I&B Minister Smt Ambika Soni. Mike said IDPA was a knowledge
Veena Bakshi, Mike Pandey, Sanskar Desai and Lygia Mathews
partner with the Ministry to promote short and
documentary films and would also promote
the non-feature films in the Indian Panorama.
The IDPA is also in talks with the Ministry
to get a dedicated documentary television channel, and for reduction of duties on equipment,
since documentaries are a tool for education. All
channels should carry documentary slots part of
their corporate social responsibility, he added.
The slot of twenty minutes of documentary in cinema halls is also being revived
soon. The IDPA hard approached the Plan-
Research is the body and soul of filmmaking
R
esearch is the body
and soul of good cinema, and documentary films in particular cannot
be made without in-depth
study of the subject.
This was the general consensus at the Open Forum on
the ‘Role of Research in filmmaking’. However, the speakers regretted that most makers
of the commercial cinema did
not bother about research if
they had good stars.
Filmmaker Anwar Jamal
whose film Dil ki Basti mein
is in the Short Film Center
said: ‘Originality needs sensitivity and research.’ But this
is often ignored if market
forces dictate terms or the star
value takes over. In documentaries, he said research has to
be authentic and in-depth.
Filmmaker Ramesh Tekwani who also moderated the
Film Analyst, Ketan Dewan addressing at the Open Forum
discussion said ‘pure enjoyment gets substance if there is
adequate research’ and gave
examples of popular films
that fail because of bad research. Research should not
be confined to the subject of
the film, but should also be
about public perception.
Film analyst Ketan Dewan
said a filmmaker may have a
gut feel about the subject of
his film, but it will come
crashing down if there is no
research. A good film works
from the theme selection to
the marketing stage. Content
cannot be limited by bound-
aries and so research has to be
such that the film is understood by all. He added that
the media has a major role to
play through reviews, just as
social networking also can
make or mar a film.
Jan Tilman Schwab, who is
a film historian from Germany, said he had found films
on football in every continent
when he set out to do his research and finally produced a
book which is over 1000
pages long. The same kind of
diligence is needed in research
for making films, he said.
Mr U Radhakrishnan of
the FFSI said that early filmmakers in India did not have
to do much research because
their works were based on
mythology, but this had become very essential in the
present-day cinema.

razil's(first female ) President
Dilma Rousseff has signed a decree abolishing taxes on cinematic co-productions between the two
countries. That's not all. In a judicious
blending of sports and culture, Brazilian
film-makers, in tandem with their sports
admins, will delight Goan enthusiasts of
the game with fancy footwork and training from the Latin American country's
football stars and coaches.
Disclosing this at a press meet yesterday, Luis Henrique Severiano Riberio
Baez, producer of "Mario Filho:The Creator of Crowds" said that this would be
part of "a series of exchanges between
Brazil, Goa and India."Goa is being
given most favored status because it is,
like Brazil and Argentina, football crazy.
Kerala too will be part of this favored set
and its football enthusiasts will also get
the opportunity to be coached by Brazilian trainers.

IDPA General Secretary Sanskar Desai
said the Association also presents awards annually to the best documentaries and short
fiction films made in the country. A total of
seventy-two films have won Gold, Silver or
Certificate of Merit in 26 categories ranging
from documentaries, short fiction, animation
and special theme films presented for 2010.
The IDPA has been in regular collaboration
since its inception with the Mumbai International Film Festival for shorts; documentary
and animation films organized by the Films
Division, the Short Film Center at IFFI, and
the Chhota Cinema that helps promote the
documentary movement.
The IDPA is one of the oldest film associations to be set up as a trust way back in
1956, guided since its birth by a galaxy of
member filmmakers and producers from

TRISHNA IS A FILM
CLOSE TO MY HEART FREIDA PINTO
D
uring the press conference, at the outset,
Shankar Mohan, Director-IFFI, introduced
the director of the film -- Michael Winterbottom and actress Freida Pinto, who plays the role
of Trishna. Freida Pinto, who plays the role of protagonist of the movie “Trishna” said that “Trishna”
is a film which is really close to her heart and she
found it emotionally satisfying to be associated with
it. She said that the storyline gave her an opportunity to discover her acting skills.
Freida Pinto, Michael Winterbottom and Shankar Mohan
Freida said “I did not feel any embarrassment
while shooting this film because this was the strong
requirement of the script”. When asked whether the
film had given her any mileage, she said that she
has gone ten steps ahead in terms of her performance.
Michael Winterbottom said that the movie was
based on Thomas Hardy’s classic novel Tess of the
D’urbervilles and set out to tell the story of a
woman whose life was destroyed by a combination
of love and circumstances. Michael said that he had
met Freida in London for the first time and chose
her for the role of Trishna, which represents a classic Indian Woman with contemporary sensibilities.
He felt that nobody could have played the role of
Trishna as perfectly as Freida did and he was very
happy to note that she was a part of the project.
Michael Winterbottom said that Trishna will be released in March-April next year.
Freida said that it was her second Indian Film,
the first being Slum Dog Millionaire. Speaking
about her future projects, Freida Pinto said that a
few of her projects were in the pipeline and she
looked forward to work in more Indian films. When
asked, whether she will like to work in a Bengali
Film, she replied very enthusiastically, “Yes. I love
Bengali Cinema very much”.

How many times have you visited
India?
It is my 5th time in India. The
last time I came to Goa was in 2009
along with a package of six films of
Roland Reber.
Can you tell me something about
the title of the film, The Truth of
Lie?
It is the human tendency in our
daily life to lie. But in every lie,
there is a tiny truth. This film tries
to depict philosophy of life.
In this film, women are put to
physical and mental torture by the
writer, who is the main character of
the film.
Do you have any experience of
having been being tortured physically?
The most scaring torture was
water boarding, which is used by
the Americans to torture terrorists.
It was a very difficult experience
for me, as after 10-15 seconds, I
