SCENE

Vilde Frang
rang
In later years, Norway has witnessed violinist Vilde
Frang being named EMI Classic’s Young Artist
of the Year 2010, pianist Christian Ihle Hadland
honoured with the BBC New Generation Artist 2011
award and 17-year old Erlend Holtsmark Ringstad
winning the Eurovision Young Musician 2012 - no
mean feat considering that the latter performed
Bartok’s Viola Concerto!
From a long list of international engagements this
year, we can highlight Frang and Hadland’s recitals
and soloist performances with orchestras at the
2013 Proms in London.
What has happened here?
Well, in the past we have been up there in the
upper echelons of classical music with the likes
of Edvard Grieg, Kirsten Flagstad and Leif Ove
Andsnes flying the flag for their country, but the
rich flora of young talent that has emerged and
made a mark for itself over the last decades still
represents something special. The three young
performers all share a background, more or less,
from Oslo’s Barratt Due Music Institute. Children
are enrolled here from the age 3-4, and can
continue their studies at the institute all the way
up to a BA-level. The most talented students are
able to earn their BA’s parallel with their highschool level studies.
An elite academy into which innocent children are
whipped by over-ambitious parents? No, what first
springs to mind when entering the front-door of
the institute is the atmosphere. The children start
out with song, dance, folk tunes and the Suzuki
method. The very foundation that everything
builds upon is the joy of playing: three-year olds
on mute cardboard-violins play Vivaldi with the
older students, convinced that they are taking
part in the music making. Real instruments are
introduced at a later stage – gradually followed by
elementary score reading. This is again followed
by a well thought-out system of individual
classes and chamber music- as well as orchestra
sessions where the unique teaching environment
encourages the youthful joy of playing.
The institute was founded in 1927, but the
resurgence of international, prize-winning talent
is more of a contemporary phenomenon, and can
likely be traced back a system of publicly funded
music education; a system that has been in place
since 1973. A well-functioning education system
has enabled the talents to pursue a career at home
and the nation now is in a position where it is selfsupplied by skilled musicians and teachers.
Today’s Norwegian art music scene features a solid
infrastructure which we will try to map out through
an overview of sector’s institutions. It is our hope
that this brochure can be helpful.

Music Norway is the Norwegian music
industry’s new export facilitator and promotional
organisation.
Following a merger of the Music Information
Centre Norway and Music Export Norway, Music
Norway is operational with effect from January 1st
2013.
Addressing the needs of the music industry, artists,
ensembles and organisations, Music Norway’s
primary goal is to foster growth in interest and use
of Norwegian music of all genres and styles.
Through various support programs, music industry
trade fair and festival presence, educational
initiatives, regional offices in Central Europe and
the UK and a wide range of other tools, Music
Norway strives to support the Norwegian music
scene’s export sector in the best way possible.
A thorough understanding of the workings of the
Norwegian music industry is also high on the
organisation’s agenda; data retrieval and analysis
as well as music export statistics will be key tasks
for the new organisation.
