It’s hard to believe that I have been your Activity Director for two years! Truly, time flies when you are having fun and having fun is what we do best. It is my pleasure and honor to serve everyone. We are now getting into the serious season of holidays. Starting with our first Ohio State Football tailgate Party. Over 50 residents devoured 10 large Papa John’s pizzas; guzzled 5 two liters of pop and made short work of the chocolate-peanut butter brownies from the kitchen. Lots of OSU door prizes were won, including John Richards, one of our newest residents. John won a cuddly OSU teddy bear. Our Second Annual Autumn Fest which featured a petting zoo of four Nigerian Dwarf goats brought to us by Katrina Dyce, Occupational Therapist with Select Home Care and her daughter, Chloe. The goats were endlessly amusing and were very friendly as they are Chloe’s and her brother’s pets. 25 residents enjoyed brushing, feeding treats and petting the goats. We hope to have them back again in the Spring. Then it was on to the First Annual Cake Walk. 35 residents participated, each winning a dessert compliments of Mary in the kitchen. Delores and Suzi Heit walked around the circle for 40 minutes before finally winning a dessert. Margieann Mello had a great time because it was the first Cake Walk she had ever participated in. And we’re hoping Leon Troy shared his prize with his wife, Bernice. I’m sure we’ll be doing a cake walk again soon. School starts in the fall, which we like because we get to see all our friends from area schools. During the school year, we’ll have activities with Forest Park Christian School kindergarteners and preschoolers. Woodward Park Middle School students will be carpet bowling and playing “Price Is Right” with us. In December, St. Anthony’s High School Youth Group will be sharing a holiday activity with us. We appreciate the time the children spend with us. And we thank the teachers who feel that bringing students to Oakleaf Village is a valuable experience. The next holiday celebration will be the Halloween Party on Thursday, October 27, from 6:00pm8:00pm. Watch for further details. Lindsay Reed, our Director of Nursing was very pleased with the number of residents who took advantage of the flu shots sponsored by Walgreens. 54 residents got “shot up”. Knock on wood, we hope not to have any major flu outbreaks this season. Speaking of nursing, October 6th there will be a Free Falls Screening for residents sponsored by Senior Independence and Park Rehab. During the screening, you will be assessed to see if you are at risk for falling and if so, told what you can do to help prevent further falls. Falls are one of the major causes for elderly people having to go to the ER. Oakleaf staff want you to be as safe as possible so please take advantage of this service. Resident, Jan Johnson has been on cloud nine as her son Travis and wife Betsy gave birth to triplets in England. As I write this, Jan is visiting them. All three granddaughters: Julia, Catherine and Augusta are healthy and beautiful. Congratulations Jan! Coming Attractions: Thursday, October 27 2nd Annual Oakleaf Halloween Party 6:00-8:00 Residents, staff and children are encouraged to dress in their finest Halloween outfit. We’ll start the day with Sandy LaFollette face painting in the lobby from 10:00-11:30. Then we’ll have the results of the “Witches Hunt”, our Halloween Scavenger Hunt and the winner of Guess the Number of Candy Corn along with a party in the afternoon. Then we’ll greet trick or treaters in the evening. Candy stations will be in the lobby and 1st floor alcoves. Snacks and other fun activities will be on the 2nd floor multi-purpose room. Candy donations can be given to the front desk. Veteran’s Day Program Friday, November 11 3:00– 4:00 To be held in the multi-purpose room. Families, friends are invited to join us. Holiday Open House Thursday, December 8 (Cont. from page one) At our October Candlelight Dinner, the discussion came up about why we chose to come and live at Oakleaf Village. For a number of folks, as soon as they walked in they said, “This is the place for me”. The main lobby was so inviting, warm and busy. Also, we observed how clean and free of odor the building was. But most importantly, we all felt welcome from both staff and residents, everyone was so friendly. That is something that Oakleaf prides itself with is that we are all family here and as Erma Bombeck once said, “Treat your family like company and your company like family.” Think about that. Our Oakleaf family is now 130 residents strong; that’s one big happy family. Thank to everyone who makes it a happy place.
