National Assisted Living Week® PLANNING GUIDE & PRODUCT CATALOG September 11–17, 2016 keep connected NATIONAL ASSISTED LIVING WEEK® September 11–17, 2016 About National Assisted Living Week Established by the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) in 1995, National Assisted Living Week® (NALW) provides a unique opportunity for residents, their loved ones, staff, volunteers, and the surrounding communities to recognize the role of assisted living in caring for America’s seniors and individuals with disabilities. The annual observance encourages assisted living communities around the country to offer a variety of events and activities to celebrate the individuals they serve, as well as to help educate members of the public about this distinctive aspect of long term care. keep connected The 2016 theme, “Keep Connected,” recognizes the increasing opportunity technology can offer to enhance the care and overall experience in assisted living communities. NALW encourages assisted living communities to support opportunities for residents to use the latest communication tools to engage with the world around them. The theme aims to help overcome myths that seniors are not interested in using or lack the ability to learn new technologies. Furthermore, “Keep Connected” recognizes the myriad ways assisted living staff and supporting business partners are revolutionizing the care provided in these communities through innovations in technology. As a profession rooted in person-centered care, assisted living is embracing new tools that fit the needs and preferences of the individuals it serves. However, “Keep Connected” is about more than technology. Assisted living shows us that sometimes the best relationships are formed and fostered face-to-face. For many staff members, residents become family, and that bond can never be broken. Meanwhile, assisted living communities are an integral part of the larger community. Staff cultivate connections with local families, business owners, government organizations, community organizers and others to ensure that residents remain an active part of where they call home. 1 ©2016 NATIONAL CENTER FOR ASSISTED LIVING · WWW.NALW.ORG · #NALW fast facts among older adults WHY do older adults use the Internet or social media? Partner with the local community to offer training and increase connectivity: Find a nearby community college with a dedicated course or instructor. Reach out to an area high school where you can partner students with residents (which simultaneously, decreases the generational gap). Access resources offered by national or local organizations that offer computer training to seniors (e.g., Senior Net, Older Adults Technology Services [OATS], AARP). For those residents who are newly-proficient and/or seasoned online users, use NALW to encourage them to make the most out of their online experience. Help them continue to fill out their social media profiles or look for new friends and family members to follow. Knowing a resident’s interests (e.g., gardening, cooking, crafts, etc.), help them find related apps or websites to follow. Challenge them do an activity suggested by the app or website. Create a week-long social media contest, such as challenging residents to create a video to post on YouTube, and have a contest to see who gets the most views or likes. 3 ©2016 NATIONAL CENTER FOR ASSISTED LIVING · WWW.NALW.ORG · #NALW PUT A TWIST ON THE ACTIVITY CALENDAR Consider finding a way to integrate technology into the traditional social activities that residents love. Host a virtual game night. Games like Bingo, Jeopardy and Family Feud can be recreated and customized on a computer and projected on a screen for all residents to enjoy. Have a dinner party where food is ordered online by residents. Afterwards, residents could even rate the restaurant on online review sites. Find a recipe or cooking tutorial online and use it as a guide for a cooking class. Help residents experience a bucket list item without ever having to leave the community. Offer a virtual reality headset (this is possible with a smartphone), so residents can explore videos, maps, games and more to feel like they’re right in the midst of the action. CONNECT WITH LOVED ONES One of the biggest reasons seniors are interested in going online is the ability to connect with people far and wide. Technology can help residents unite with distant loved ones or virtually participate at an external gathering or outing they may not ordinarily be able to attend. Hold an online card making event. Create and send e-vites to let friends and family know about an upcoming event at the community. Or create and send e-cards to loved ones regarding a special occasion or just to let them know the resident is thinking about them. Set up video chats with residents’ family and friends. Or coordinate with loved ones about setting up a live camera feed at a special occasion, so the resident can participate. Help residents locate family, friends or long-lost connections on social media sites. Allow residents to learn more about their family ancestry by conducting research online. #NALW · WWW.NALW.ORG · ©2016 NATIONAL CENTER FOR ASSISTED LIVING 4 planning ideas for national assisted living week® GET ACTIVE NALW isn’t meant to be a week of residents staring at a computer or binging on their favorite movies through online streaming services. Technology also offers residents and staff the opportunity to exercise and enhance their well-being. Offer exercise classes with technology, such as a bowling tournament or a Zumba dance class with console games. Use wearable technology to allow residents to track their fitness habits. Create a week- long competition to see which residents can rack up the most points (keeping in mind some residents are more active than others). HIGHLIGHT HOW TECH IMPROVES CARE Showcase how your assisted living community is enhancing the quality of care you provide with the assistance of new technologies. Whether it’s improving health monitoring, medication management, communication with other health care providers, or other aspects, identify and publicize what improvements you’ve seen as a result of your 21st century products and services. Partner with the company that offers a key piece of technology and promote the innovative technologies you use to the surrounding community. Offer a science/technology fair to a local school to see what students come up with as ways to improve care. Invite the students to visit the community before NALW to learn more about the residents and what potential challenges they could help solve. Not using much technology? Use NALW as a time to research your options. Consult with area providers to see what they recommend. Download NALW logos for your promotional materials (no products for sale or derivative works) at www.nalw.org. 5 ©2016 NATIONAL CENTER FOR ASSISTED LIVING · WWW.NALW.ORG · #NALW CONNECT TO THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY “Keep Connected” is about more than technology. It reminds us that assisted living plays an important role within the larger community. Find opportunities to invigorate residents through valuable contributions and to help community members understand what assisted living provides. In September, we’ll be weeks away from the 2016 Elections. Host a town hall with your local member of Congress or another elected official to allow residents to ask questions about the issues important to them. Use the opportunity to show the official what assisted living offers to residents and the local economy. If an elected official is unavailable, consider holding a voter registration drive, following the rules of your state’s elections process. Partner with a local school for an oral history project, to connect students and residents with the past. Residents will appreciate the opportunity to share their stories, as students will learn about their extraordinary experiences. Offer classes, such as dementia training, to local community members. You can help the loved ones of residents or city/county workers (e.g., first responders) better understand the disease process and how to interact with older adults living with Alzheimer’s or other conditions. CONNECT AS STAFF MEMBERS While we use NALW to celebrate the unique individuals who reside in assisted living communities, this is also a time to celebrate the extraordinary commitment made by staff members. Consider ways to recognize your colleagues for their many efforts. Create a team building event to improve social relations and productivity. Offer employees a chance to share their ideas on ways to enhance the work environment and care process. Reward staff through your employee recognition program. Acknowledge the extra effort caregivers and supporting staff put in with personal notes, a public celebration, or myriad of other ways. Work with a local community college or university to connect with potential new hires. See if local nursing schools would offer a rotation at your community, to hopefully spark a gerontological interest for nursing students. Look for other university programs to network with, like hospitality management. LOOKING FOR MORE IDEAS? Pinterest is a social media site that serves as a visual bookmark. Search for activity ideas created or pinned by other assisted living professionals. #NALW · WWW.NALW.ORG · ©2016 NATIONAL CENTER FOR ASSISTED LIVING 6 protecting privacy for national assisted living week® KEEP IN MIND While new technologies such as smartphones and social media platforms have allowed care providers—as well as residents themselves— to enhance quality of life, they have also unfortunately proven to be a new set of tools used by offenders to violate the privacy and dignity of vulnerable residents. To help prevent these actions, assisted living communities must remain vigilant and ensure policies and procedures are in place. Make sure your community and company are following these best practices from the American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living. ENSURE THE PRIVACY OF RESIDENTS Adhere to federal and state privacy requirements and incorporate these requirements into your existing policies. Acquire the approval of residents (or their legal guardians) to use their images via authorization forms before posting on your company’s communication materials, including social media. Provide training to staff both during employee orientation and on a regular basis. WHEN USING SOCIAL MEDIA AS A COMPANY OR AS A COMMUNITY Create and continuously update policies and procedures on social media practices that ensure the privacy of residents. Dedicate specific staff to manage your company’s social media channels. Only those individuals should have authorization to post on behalf of the company or community. When posting to social media, only use images of residents and staff members who have given proper written authorization to use their images. Be prepared for engagement with online users, but don’t respond with a resident's personal details online. COMMUNICATE WITH AND TRAIN STAFF Ensure policies for staff members include the use of social networking sites and any other Internet activities: Clearly state that company policies apply to both on- and off-duty use; Include specific examples of the kinds of statements or activities that are prohibited; Clearly state the consequences of such prohibited activities; and Ensure such policies protect the rights of employees per the National Labor Relations Act. Require employees to acknowledge receiving, reading, and understanding these policies. Provide training to staff members on such policies both during employee orientation and on a regular basis. Adhere to policies when staff violate social media policies. Report the staff member to the proper authorities if they have committed a crime. Learn more: http://bit.ly/1Y9lN4N PREVENT CONSUMER FRAUD AND ABUSE The Internet can also pose a risk to older adults who are frequent targets of consumer fraud and scams. Familiarize yourself with the variety of online scams and how they approach seniors. Assisted living staff can help watch for warning signs and help prevent the victimization of residents. Connect with the public by reaching out to your local media outlets to spread the word about NALW. You can promote your unique NALW events or highlight innovative services or programs you offer. Materials you can create to connect with the press include news releases, media kits, letters to the editor or op-ed pieces, proclamations, and social media posts. NEWS RELEASES News releases are used to alert the local media of significant events, issues, services, programs, awards, and other events. Send the release to your local news editors and reporters, especially those who have previously covered your assisted living community. If you want to invite the press before the event occurs, send a media advisory or a personal invite one week before the event or desired coverage, and then follow up a couple days before to see if they can come. MEDIA KITS A media kit about your assisted living community serves as a quick reference or “background” for the local reporters who provide coverage of your facility during NALW. Elements of the kit can include information about your assisted living community, the services you offer, its role in the larger community, and a schedule of special activities you are offering in honor of NALW. Remember to include the contact information for your assisted living community’s marketing representative. LETTERS TO THE EDITORS/OP-ED PIECES These short articles provide greater control over the content of your message, as they can be authored by a designated representative of the community (e.g., executive director). Share how your assisted living community stays connected with your local newspaper and magazine editors. Or encourage an active resident or their loved one to write a letter to the editor about their experience. PROCLAMATIONS Proclamations are a great mechanism to have your locally elected officials visit your community. Invite your governor, mayor or city council members to issue a proclamation (offer a sample) in honor of NALW. You can invite them to visit the community and kick off the week on Grandparent’s Day, September 11. SOCIAL MEDIA Post items throughout NALW on your assisted living community’s website and/or social media channels. Share photos and videos of unique events, or highlight resident stories (with their authorization). Use the hashtag #NALW on channels like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to contribute to the national conversation. “Like” NALW on Facebook for inspirational stories and to see what others around the country are doing. Samples of these communication tools can be found at WWW.NALW.ORG. #NALW · WWW.NALW.ORG · ©2016 NATIONAL CENTER FOR ASSISTED LIVING 8 products for national assisted living week® Order Early for Best Selection!
