National Assisted Living Week®
It’s never too early to start PLANNING the
biggest Assisted Living Week of the Year!
About National Assisted Living Week®
Established by NCAL in 1995, National Assisted Living Week® (NALW) provides a unique opportunity for residents,
families, staff, volunteers, and the surrounding community to come together to give residents a variety of exciting
events and activities that show them how much you care about and love them. The 2013 theme, Homemade
Happiness will inspire creativity and participation and will grab the attention of the media. To make planning as
easy as possible, reference this guide for activity ideas, media kit materials, and products featuring the 2013 theme.
“Where we love is home —
home that our feet may
leave, but not our hearts.”
oliver wendell holmes
Homemade Happiness
What makes an individual happy? This is an age old question, with millions of answers. For our residents, happy
memories call forward a simpler time, when the long, hot days of summer were spent at a local park or county
fair. These were the days when cell phones and social media were not how you kept in touch. Happiness, and
connecting with friends, for them, was found in simple, homemade endeavors.
Creating happiness in our communities for both residents and staff is a daily occurrence. During National Assisted
Living Week®, we hope that our guide and products allow you to create even more happy moments for all those
who call your community home. Whether it is residents, staff, family members or volunteers, these activities can
bring your community together as a family, who love, support, and care for one another.
Join this year’s National Assisted Living Week® celebration.

Happiness Her es
Each and every community has them — heroes! Whether it is the resident who asks
everyone how they are, the staff member who is ready with a smile at all times, the
volunteer who comes in without fail, and the family member who donates their time to
the community, heroes are among us each and every day. Celebrate your community’s
heroes by picking several “Happiness Heroes” every day throughout the week. These
“Happiness Heroes” are individuals who have made a difference in the lives of others.
Do not be shy about who you recognize! You can spread this joy throughout the
community. For instance, in your stand up meetings you can praise a staff member who
truly went above and beyond. During mealtimes, highlight a resident who could use a
smile or who always has one for everyone else. Hold a “Thank You Happiness Heroes”
day for your volunteers and family members to let them know just how much you truly
appreciate them! By recognizing your heroes in little and small ways, you will make a
huge impact on others.
Your recognition does not have to be big — often, simply mentioning what an individual
has done is enough! You can make a “Hero Board” and post it in your common area,
rotating the photo of your hero every day. Or, purchase some of our NALW “Happiness
Hero” ribbons and hand them out throughout the week — and beyond — to anyone who
has brought a little bit of happiness to others that day. Pass out the ribbons, sit back, and
watch the smiles appear!

For many of us, some of our earliest memories revolve around
cooking or meals shared with family and friends. Baking a
pie with your grandmother in her kitchen, creating the perfect
Sunday dinner, or participating in a food competition at the
local fair were commonplace. Food, and the creation of lovingly crafted home cooked meals is at the heart of every family.
During National Assisted Living Week®, take the time to bring
back the love of cooking for all of your residents. Even those
with significant memory loss can enjoy simple culinary activities. In fact, the feeling of baking or cooking with your hands
is a memory that many individuals with dementia still possess.
Invite families, the neighboring community, and others to
join you as you create homemade happiness through cooking.
A JAMMING GOOD TIME! A nutritious and delicious
addition to any kitchen, creating your own homemade jelly or
jam is an exciting and surprisingly simple activity for many
residents. After creating several batches of your favorite jams
and jellies, consider holding a community-wide contest to
choose a blue-ribbon winner or donating the jars to a local
homeless shelter.

WHEN THE MOON HITS YOUR EYE LIKE A BIG PIZZA PIE, THAT’S AMORE!
Making pizzas at home was common in the 1960s. Spread love and happiness by throwing
your own homemade pizza party! Gather friends, residents and family members as you
create dough from scratch or a kit and cover it with sauce, cheese and your favorite
toppings. Have a “favorite topping” contest or a “most creative pizza” contest to add some
variety and fun to your pizza experience!
I SCREAM, YOU SCREAM, WE ALL SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM! Nothing quite puts
a smile on faces like a full-fledged ice cream social! Create an activity out of the exciting
event by making some homemade toppings or even bringing in an ice cream machine to
make the dairy delight from scratch! Residents can have a
“favorite flavor” competition and share their favorite
memory of an ice cream treat.
CHOPPED – COOKIE STYLE! What could be better than
a cookie? A cookie competition! Welcome a little friendly
competitiveness by holding a “chopped” style cookie
competition in your community. Residents can combine a
few classic ingredients with one or two oddities in “mystery
baskets.” Designate three staff members to be the competitors and have them whip up their own cookie creation
based on their ingredients. Residents, family members or
even members of the neighborhood can serve as the lucky
judges who taste each offering. The best part? With so
many delicious cookies to sample, everyone wins!

But a little chocolate now
and then doesn’t hurt.”

I THINK I “CAN”, I THINK I “CAN”! Early fall is the time for state fairs and your
community can get into the spirit by adding a homemade twist! Have residents, families
and staff join together to host an old-fashioned canned vegetables contest. Who makes
the best pickles? Tomatoes? You will find out with a little effort and a whole lot of fun!
Provide Happiness Hero ribbons for all who participate and enjoy the “fruits” of your labor
for months to come.

H me Is Where the Art Is
Beautiful art truly makes a
home. Often, residents will bring
beloved pieces of art with them
when they move into assisted
living communities. Celebrate
this by having a homemade art
show. Residents who love to
create art can display their
pieces around the community,
integrated with personal art
that residents own and may
want to share.
For a fun activity, have residents
recall how they created art
projects as children and young
adults – what kind of homemade
items did they use back then?
Provide them with these same materials and watch what they create! Share these pieces at
your art show as well and watch the happiness bloom.

whole life, but they
make our lives whole.”

Happiness is a Warm Puppy
Research has shown that having a cat or a dog can
reduce anxiety, stress and depression in seniors. An animal
can provide comfort, love and companionship for many of
our residents. Combined with their absolute cuteness, is it
a surprise that many assisted living communities welcome
pets? Showcase your favorite Snoopy or Garfield by hosting
a homemade pet parade.
Residents can either dress their favorite feline friends up in
a costume, or simply have them in their laps. If you do not
have enough pets in your community, invite family members
and staff to bring their furry friends in for the day. Hold the
event outside and invite local school children by to join in the fun!
Don’t stop with your current pets! Encourage residents to bring out photos or tell stories
about their beloved pets who may have passed. By reminiscing about these memories and
sharing humorous or heart-warming stories, your community becomes closer together.
If a pet parade is too much, why not have your residents introduce a group of children to
the 1970’s “Pet Rock” craze by making their very own pets out of rocks?
The kids and residents can name their new rocky pets and use their
imaginations to create personal histories and personalities for their
Pet Rocks. Making pets out of rocks is easy, inexpensive and a
fun-filled intergenerational activity. Don’t forget to teach your
new Pet Rocks all of the tricks such as sit, stay and roll over. http://familycrafts.about.com/od/stoneandrock/ss/petrocks.htm

Healthy H memade Habits
We have heard time and again that health and wellness is
important for all of us. You can make it fun as well! Start
off every day of National Assisted Living Week® with a
different “Homemade Healthy Habit.” You can hold a
special exercise program, such as chair yoga or Tai Chi.
When it becomes a big hit, you can make it a recurring
healthy habit! When your whole community embraces
something and makes it a habit, it becomes harder to
break. Schedule a time for your chef to give a special
presentation on the benefits of a healthy diet to residents
and families, and detail how you meet your residents’
nutritional needs.
HOST A HEALTHY HAPPY HOUR. Many residents may
not have tried all the new healthy food alternatives that
are available in grocery stores today. Have a taste test
sampling and have residents provide their feedback. Try
vegan corn dogs, soy milk, almond milk, coconut water,
hummus, veggie burgers and more. Residents can rate
what was good, not so good and what they would like to
try again.

PINEWOOD DERBY CARS
Toys have a magical way of bringing the child out in
everyone. A beloved doll, toy truck or building block set
helps children imagine, dream, and learn. As we age, the
desire to imagine and the comfort that toys bring does
not diminish. But many of us are stumped when we
view the toys of children today – electronic, loud and
confusing. Why not bring back some toys of days gone
by for residents and family members to enjoy together?
You can create an art project by making homemade rag dolls with residents.
Reminisce about dolls and toys they had as children as you craft these lovable companions.
Use old buttons for eyes, scraps of cloth for clothes and yarn for hair. If rag dolls are too
complicated, try making paper dolls! You can make the dolls resemble residents or staff
members and let imagination take over!
For directions on creating rag dolls visit: www.ehow.com/way_5382648_homemade-ragdolls.html and for directions on creating the perfect paper doll, visit: www.wikihow.com/
Make-Paper-Dolls
Bring back wonderful boyhood memories by holding a Pine Wood Derby in your
community! Your residents will love building, decorating and racing these simple wooden
cars. A favorite activity of many Cub Scouts or Cub Scout fathers and mothers, pine wood
derby cars allow your residents to take a trip down memory lane. Order a few packs from
eBay (www.ebay.com) by searching “pinewood derby cars” and it is off to the races!

HOLIDAY ORNAMENTS
The holiday season will be here before you know it. What better way to get into the spirit
of the season than making homemade holiday ornaments and decorations. You can
combine community service with a sense of holiday fun and truly celebrate the season
of giving.
First, ask residents how they decorated their holiday trees or homes with homemade
decorations when they were younger. After sharing those memories, gather the materials
you need to create some simple ornaments. Host a holiday ornament decorating party
and have families, residents and staff decorate some ornaments and larger decorations to
donate to a local church or after-school program. You could even bring children in from a
local school to help with the decorating!
HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE
To get a jump-start on holiday giving,
host a food drive. Place signs throughout
the community and in the neighborhood
asking individuals to bring in non-perishable food each time they visit during
National Assisted Living Week® or the
month of September. Then, have a group
of staff, residents and family members
deliver the goodies to the local food
bank or shelter. You will all feel content in
knowing that you have brought a little bit
of your home to someone else.

Included in this guide are some ideas and tips to help you promote National
Assisted Living Week® in your community. These suggestions include news releases,
electronic communications, media kits, letters to the editor, op-ed pieces,
proclamations, and special events that highlight National Assisted Living Week®
and the services offered in assisted living and your residence.
Spread the Word!
Samples of tools can be found at www.nalw.org that providers can use to
communicate your message.
News Releases
News releases are used to alert the local media of significant events, issues, services,
programs, awards, and other events. Send the release to your local news editors
and reporters, especially those who have previously covered your assisted living
residence, three days before the event or desired coverage.
Web Site
Post items about National Assisted Living Week® events and information on your
assisted living residence’s Web site. Contact other local community organizations
that may want to provide links from their Web sites to yours, and vice versa.
Examples include your local civic organizations, community groups, senior
organizations, health care organizations, and consumer groups.
Media Kits
A media kit about your assisted living residence serves as a quick reference or
“background” for the local reporters who provide coverage of your community during
National Assisted Living Week®. Elements of the kit can include information about
your assisted living residence, the services you offer and the associated fees, its role
in the larger, local community, and a schedule of special activities you are offering
in honor of National Assisted Living Week®. Remember to include a letter of
introduction that provides an overview of the media kit and the contact information
for your assisted living residence’s marketing representative.
Letters To The Editors/Op-Ed Pieces
These tools provide greater control over the content of your message. Send them
to your local newspaper and magazine editors. Examples of both can be found at
the National Assisted Living Week® Web site, www.nalw.org.
Remember to include a letter of introduction that provides an overview of the media kit and
the contact information for your assisted living residence’s marketing representative.
