Ranger Drainage News
It’s that time of year again when
our children are out of school and
looking for things to do to occupy
their time. Parents, please remind
your children and their friends
they are not to be on any of the
canals, easements or lakes within
the District. This includes the use
of, but not limited to; ATV’s, Golf-Carts, Motorcycles,
Vehicles etc. The District cannot stress enough, the danger
associated with trespassing in these areas. Failure to
comply could result in injury or death. If you would, help
us out by educating your children on where they can and
cannot be within the community. And of course, parents
set the example and your children will follow your lead.
Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes
are truly endless
~ Mother Teresa
As always, if you have any questions please call me at
407-568-5502 or stop by and see me at the District Office
Monday-Friday 7:30 A.M. – 4:00 P.M.
Wishing each of you a happy and safe summer!!
Sincerely,
Dawn R. Mullins, General Manager
Ranger Drainage District
I also wanted to mention that the District field employees
have new uniforms. As an added safety precaution they
are all now wearing the safety green/yellow shirts and
hats. The RDD logo is on the back of their shirts for easy
identification as a District employee. If you see one of our
team members take a moment to stop and tell them how
much you appreciate their hard work.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH REPORT
No pursuit, No patrol, No confrontation, JUST WATCH and REPORT.
During the last half of JUNE to the present date of
JULY 12, 2016 based on Orange County Sheriff’s
crime statistics on OCSO web site we have had
TWO Residential Burglaries in the 19400 and 19500
blocks of LANSDOWNE and TWO stolen vehicles,
one in the 19500 block LANSDOWNE and one in
the 2200 block of BANCROFT. I also received a
phone call regarding vandalism in the 2300 block of
ALABASTER.
the position since it was a constitutional office, it was
one that needed to be partisan and so ordered. But, we
still have the election for our District 5 Commissioner
and other offices on the 30th. Do be sure to vote. Our
future depends on those elected.
On a different note, this year we will again celebrate
NHW NIGHT OUT on August 2nd but this time it
is to only recognize the day by turning on our lights
and going next door to meet our neighbors. Our main
celebration will be on the 4th of OCTOBER with ice
cream in the park, balloons and face painting for the
kids.
To report a crime in progress, fire or medical

SO PLEASE LOCK-UP YOUR CAR; LOCK-UP

Now on a happy note EVELYN RODRIGUEZ
PEREZ continues to keep our Wedgefield NHW Face
Book page neighborly and smooth running. Through
her efforts we continue to add residents to the
membership and we are now at 1,155 this moment.
Keep up the good work Evelyn we thank you.
Last but not least the election for Sheriff has been
changed to November 8th instead of August 30th.
The change was ordered by a judge that determined

Are you working on your Middle School

On July 7, The Wedgefield Green Thumb Garden Club had a
speaker who gave an informative and amusing presentation
on bonsai trees. Lois Kiss explained to us how to start,
plant, water, what tools we should use; her talk showed
what an expert she is. She brought books, magazines and
personal photos as well.
Sylvia Cox arranged this topic and brought door prizes
AND dessert. At the time for drawing for the door prizes
of plants, Sylvia explained that her friend Lois, always won
something. Sylvia was right, as usual. Additionally, Paula
Harris, Linda Ariboca and Alan Smith won a plant.
Next month the topic will be herbs and their usage. The
presenters will be Connie Shepherd, a Master Gardener
and Linda Ariboca who aspires to become an M.G. They
encouraged members to bring ideas of how to use herbs in
cooking or otherwise.
Janis Thaw encouraged everyone to bring seeds, starters,
and “baby” plants to share.

CERT Update
Thanks to the efforts of team member, Megan Gee, the Wedgefield CERT won a Grant for some
additional equipment that will help the team if we have a hurricane or other disaster. “IF” is not
correct, it must be “When” because we can’t go forever without a hurricane.
We have been so very lucky since 2005 but with all of the changes in the weather this year we
must all be vigilant.
These are a few things that should be considered every hurricane season:
•
•
•
•
•
Check the generator to ensure that it is in good working condition.
If you plan to cover your windows with plywood, it is in more abundance before the wind blows.
Think about purchasing tarps
Pick up an extra ice chest to store perishable food if the electricity is interrupted.
How old are the batteries in your flashlights?
We have three team members with their Amateur Radio licenses and two more that will take the course/test in September
but more are needed. The course is open to everyone interested, NOT just CERT members. If anyone is interested, they
should contact Phil Unser at (407)679-6644 or [email protected] for details.
The next weekend class is scheduled for September 10th and 11th at the Orange County Communications Center.
Phil can be reached at (407) 679-6644.

July’s beautiful YOM belongs to Kaye-Ann and
Lincoln Taylor at 3302 Coronet Ave.
They have been a Wedgefield resident since
2004. Although its gated, you are met outside by
overflowing pots of vinca, coleus, periwinkle, and
knock out roses.
Once inside its a fruit orchard of loquats, peach,
mango, avocado, and South American cherry trees.
Kaye-Ann has imported from her native Jamaica
the national fruit tree Ackee, to see if she can grow
it with success over here.
Keep us posted on how it does! A very inviting
yard to drive by.
Our honorable mentions to enjoy are 19250 Newburg and 19438 Caesar.

WEDGEFIELD FIREWISE UPDATE
Wow, It’s been a hot summer with our usual violent afternoon thunderstorms. Lightning has
started several wildfires in our area this season. Thankfully, as of mid-July our KBDI is
hovering around 400.
There is an incredible YouTube video posted on the Wedgefield Firewise Facebook page
displaying how strikes cause wildfires. Visit our page or go to: YouTube and search for
“lightning in super duper slow motion”.
Afternoon storms have proven deadly this year. We should all be conscious of Lightning Safety and insure children
adhere to Lightning Safety. Visit http://solutionsforyourlife.ufl.edu/hot topics and http://www.floridadisaster.org/
kids/lightning.html for tips to keep your family safe.
If a bolt strikes in close proximity to your home; smell and look for signs of fire. If you suspect lightning has struck
your home, call 911 immediately. On rare occasions, lightning can start attic fires requiring rapid response.
Wedgefield feels like the lightning capital of the world. Our pets think so.
Actually, Lake Catatumbo in Venezuela is number one, averaging 160 Thunderstorms per year. We are number
three in the world averaging 90 thunderstorms per year. We experience 200,000 more strikes by density than any
other state. Incredibly, a bolt averages only one inch in diameter but can travel 2-10 miles. Strong lightning bolts
are heated over 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit causing the familiar shock wave BOOM as they heat the atmosphere
on the way down. NOA estimates that the average Floridian has a one in three thousand chance of being struck by
lightning. Stay safe this season by monitoring radar and listening to your weather radio.
Our Next Meeting is August 11th at 1:30pm at the Ranger Drainage office on Bancroft
The dynamics of Wedgefield Firewise is changing. Many of our original (2001) members are retiring or promoting.
This month; John Mulhall with Orange County Fire Rescue and Pete Henn with SJWMD are promoting into new
positions. In addition, Dennis Mudge with the University of Florida Extension Service is promoting and leaving
us to serve as the County Extension Director for Volusia County. Many of you know Dennis as the “Snake Guy.”
Dennis has served as the County Extension Agent for Orange and Seminole Counties, specializing in Natural
Resources/Livestock for 19 years. We will really miss Dennis’ enthusiasm and support.
Our Agency Partners will replace these positions with new Wedgefield Firewise contributors. We welcome new
board members and volunteers. If you want to give back to your community and spread the Firewise message
WE ARE LOOKING FOR YOU.
Please consider volunteering at an event or participating in a project. Visit our Wedgefield Firewise Facebook page
if interested, or if you have any questions or suggestions.
Firewise Together!
Thanks,
Gail Wilds
