A Dales Celebration.
A selection of art by local artists will be
auctioned by Rodney Tennant at the
charity auction at Tennants in Leyburn on
Thursday, September 17. And there will be
some very entertaining music thanks to
Rick Dickerlous and the Outrage supported
by Lil and the Lillettes! The proceeds from
the auction will go to the UK charity,
Friends of Govi, which helps blind and
visually impaired children in the Gambia.A
magnificent collage by Janet Rawlins will
be auctioned and the other artists who
have donated pictures include Judith
Bromley, Piers Browne, Winifred Hodge,
Roger Lofts, Moira Metcalfe, Nancy
Murgatroyd and Jo Stockdale. All the art
will be on show at Tennants from
September 2, with much it already on view
at www.friendsofgovi.org.uk.
The evening will start with canapes and
wine at 5pm and the gig with Rick
Dickerlous (aka Rod Baxter of Leyburn)
and his friends will begin at 5.30pm. This
will not only include Rod’s own composition
Sweet Jane which won such acclaim at this
year’s Wensleydale Tournament of Song
but also some items he has written
especially for this gig such as: Ode to
Northern Women and Dr Gazebos Time
Travelling Medicine Show.
Those attending the auction will also have
the opportunity to take part in a grand
raffle with some excellent prizes.
District Councillor Kevin Lancaster.
Mr Lis highlighted the importance of
the National Park Authority in playing a
fuller and more active role in Yorkshire
and Cumbria regions as the new political
arrangements are developed.
Local farmer Harold Brown from Grinton in
Swaledale, was re-elected as deputy
chairman. The National Park Authority has
a new main telephone number. The number
to ring for general enquiries is 0300 456
0030. The Authority’s old 0870 1 666333
telephone number – which has run
alongside the 0300 number for several
months to ease the change over – no longer
exists. The numbers for the Bainbridge
and Grassington offices and other sites,
such as the Dales Countryside Museum,
plus all other direct dial numbers will
remain the same.
Arkengarthdale Parish Council has
recently been successful in obtaining
grants from North Yorkshire County
Council
Community
Fund
and
Richmondshire District Council Heritage
Fund to repair the Retaining Wall beside
the Arkle beck adjacent to St. Mary's
Church Graveyard. Clark Stones, Chairman
of the Parish Council, made a presentation
in Richmond which resulted in grants of
over ‚7,000. The Community of
Arkengarthdale is very grateful for the

Crime in the Two Dales
Last month we had a report of
an attempted theft of scrap
metal and a metal gate from the
area of Marske. Two males were
reported for asking for Red diesel from a
local farm .A vehicle that appeared to be
abandoned in High Fremington had in fact
had it’s number plates removed. Two males
were trying to sell Pressure washers in the
area of Brokes. A quad bike was stolen in
Gunnerside from an insecure garage and
the lock was attacked in order to remove
the bike. Attempts were made to brake
into a garage in Muker where the padlock
was sawn off and the metal bar was bent
but the offender(s) failed to gain entry.
In order to return items that have been
stolen , recording of the identification
number / serial numbers placed on them,
would establish whether or not the item
was indeed stolen and who it belonged to.
So when new goods are purchased can I
remind you to record the items numbers/
code. Overnight 31st July- 1st August two
“guests” took a room at The Kings Arms
where the bill was left unpaid and a
television, kettle, bedding and towels were
removed from the room. The couple, a male
and female were aged about 40ish both
around 5’4” and slim build. The male was
bald and the female had spiky black hair.
Anyone who saw this couple leaving or
spoke to them elsewhere in the village
could you please contact PC Andy Foster at
Leyburn on 0845-60-60-247 who would
appreciate any further information.
Reports of suspicious activities/persons
and vehicles will always be investigated and
any information no matter how small is
always appreciated. Many thanks again to
7
you all for your support. All matters that
are reported are treated in the strictest
of confidence. Information can always be
left at my office in Hudson House in Reeth
if you fail to see me out and about or at
the Police station in Leyburn.

SWALEDALE AND ARKENGARTHDALE
DALES WATCH
As you may be aware, since it was formed
in 1997 the Swaledale and Arkengarthdale
Dales Watch, in conjunction with North
Yorkshire Police has met with considerable
success in reducing the amount of crime
which has taken place in our dales. Sadly
however, time has taken its toll and
recently fewer and fewer people have been
volunteering to help to patrol, the area.
We are urgently in need of new volunteers.
It is not an onerous task as the amount of
time spent on patrol is only as long and as
often as you wish, additionally drivers will
be reimbursed with the cost of any fuel
which is used. Please do give your time to
this very worthy cause which helps us all to
live in more safety. If you wish to
volunteer would you please leave your name
and contact details at the Post Office
addressed to Dales Watch Coordinator.

REETH AND DISTRICT GAZETTE
MESSAGE from the SWALEDALE MUSEUM
Our new 'Conversation in Craft' kicked off to an
excellent and inspiring start with Peter
Cummings on 25th July. The Museum was filled
with examples of his furniture, from large
carved wooden chairs with accompanying models,
to his new line of vacuum formed laminated
seats and his new product designs.. The evening
was full of animated questions, and surprises as
many preconceptions about his work were
broken. We also heard that he has just won a
much coveted Guild Mark for his work. On 8th
August Jenny Davies filled our upper gallery
with her beautiful, inspiring and innovative patch
and fabric work. The greensmith Michael Kusz
followed on 22nd August. We are delighted that
the painter Mike Bilton will appear on 5th
September to discuss his work. All at 7.30 pm in
the Museum. Do give us a call if you are coming,
as it helps plan the light refreshments! To
celebrate the success of the Richmond and
Leyburn Embroiderers' Guild exhibition we have
made greetings cards from Laurence Scullion's
finely worked and humorous 'Northern Icon'
embroidery ... of a Yorkshire Pudding!
Photographed by Scenic View these cards are
available from the Museum shop. Don't forget
our next Knitting Cafe on 21 September at 2pm
in the Museum, thanks to Paul from Spectrum
Yarns we have a huge bag of wool to work on! All
Marjorie Daniels's hand spun, dyed and knitted
hats and scarves have been sold due to the cold
weather! You can come and see her spinning in
the Museum most Wednesday afternoons from
2pm-4pm. While you are here come and enjoy
our burgeoning cottage garden, the delphiniums
have been splendid and the pears are ripening
nicely! Extensive preparations are afoot for the
MAKE DO & MEND long week-end 18th-20th
September. We hope lots of you will want to see
demonstrations of a range of money saving and
inventive crafts, from French knitting to
darning, proddy rug to paper bead making. There
will be lots of good ideas for Christmas presents
too. The HIGHLIGHT of this week-end will be a
lecture given by Professor Barbara Burman who
came last year to talk on our pair of 18th
century pockets. She will talk on 'Sewing
Machines and Home Sewing' at 2 pm on 19th
September.. We have had lots of new and
exciting acquisitions including a fine lead fire
insurance mark rescued from a house in the
Dale, and a gilded lead medal commemorating
the Swaledale lead taken from the roof of
Temple Bar in London when it was re-roofed in
the 19th century. The Museum continues to be
involved in a wide range of activities. It has
been a pleasure working with Reeth School on
their Elizabethan project, assisting a novelist
with research on the Dale, talking with a visitor
about his father Dr William Harwood-Long, who
selected Swaledale farmers for a report on
farming in 1948, and seeing a wonderful Hymn
Tune book by Matthew Calvert from 1859. Our
vicar Caroline Hewlett borrowed Dr Speirs's
medical bag for a sermon, Kate Trusson's
pattern made from our pair of 19th century
muffettees (on sale in our shop) is about to be
translated into 20 different languages! Visits
from various local history and WI groups for
special open evenings have been a delight. We
hosted 40 from the Ellesmere Port Gardening
Club, the Museum was part of their mystery
tour, Snape Historical Society, 4th Monday Club
from Bedale, the Barnard Castle Historical
Society, and our very own Reeth and District
Community transport Project held their AGM
and Volunteers' Party in the Museum. For the
Perspectives in Art group based in Ripon we
organised a 'How to Look after your Family
Heirlooms' morning which proved very popular.
Thank you to all these groups who have used us
as
a
venue
and
resource!

NEW EDITIONS OF ‘WENSLEYDALE
REMEMBERED’ AND ‘SWALEDALE AND
WHARFDALE REMEMBERED’.
In 2004, author Keith Taylor wrote
‘Wenseleydale Remembered-The sacrifice
Made By The Families of a Northern Dale’,
which was launched at the Dales
Countryside museum. It was sold out after
12 months. Quite a few people have
enquired over the intervening years, asking
if copies could be purchased, but they have
had to be disappointed. The publisher has
now produced a new edition of the book as
well as a new edition of Keith Taylor’s
second book, ‘Swaledale and Wharfdale
Remembered’. People who are interested
can contact Keith Taylor at ‘Wensleydale’,
4 Oker Road, South Derby, Matlock,
Derbyshire or telephone 01629 732622
