At the beginning of the year, part of the
wall collapsed at the rear of tfre memorial Whilst assessing the work required

weather had taken it's toll over the
years, most of the topstones were loose
and the majority of the wall surounding
the memorial needed re-

I have been a regular visitor. Although
most of my life has been spent in the
south and south west . Swaledale is still
'home' in my heart! In 1940 when lwas
five, rather than risk rny being evacuated from Brighton to stay with strangers, my parents packed me off to Muker
to stay with our dislant relatives George

Down on the Farm

regular niembers meeting at the
Punch Bowl Inrr were loined by
guests from support groups which
included District Councillors and
Members of the Y. D. N. Park. All
present were however, concerned at
the lack of input so far, {rom the
farnring community and felt this was
a serious flaw in their reoort, lVlembers felt that perhaps therr own poor
presentation of the Partnership had
failed to enlist the farming community to take part. The Partnership
offers a real opportunity to aitract
substantial funds to help all sectors

of economic life in the dales and
the farming sector is a major part.
The information neederi should not
be too difficult to collect and is
probably already known by most
farmers. The Partnership wishes to
be fully representative and are to
renew their efforts to bring the
farming community on board. This
is a real chance to improve the economic prospects of the dales. lf any
farmer, active or retired feels they
could help the group and supply
the information presently lacking

Of Scots extraction, I lived in the Easl
Midlands (Loughborough) from 1977
until moving to Hong Kong in February
of this year As a keen hill walker , I
started vislting Reeth with my onetime
girlfriend Marion and numerous friends,
about seven years ago. We rented a
cottage from a friend and came lo Reeth
twice a year, usually al Chrislmas/New
Year and around Easter 'fhrowing the
bedroom curtains open to lhe sight of a
of snow on Fremington Edge
made me glad to trt alive.
I have many foncj memories of waiks

run primary care and to purchase

PCG's were formed last year by this
Laboar gorcinmcnt to replace the Tory
implemented'Tund-holding" scheme. I
am old enough to have secn quite a few
reforms of the health service and over
the years growD sceptical of
new
reforms. So is this any different? Let's
just say it has potential. Over the years
Primary Care (or General Practice) has
grown from a Cinderella part of the
medical profession to be in the
forefront. The vast majority of patientdoctor contacts occur in prrmary care
and we act as patieut advocates and
gatekeepers to secondary care, or
hospital-based services. Until recently
tbe two halves of the
profession
operaied independently without much
dialogue between primary
and
secondary care. One good thing about
these reforms is that for the frst time it
has got ttre two halves talkirlg to each
other in a constructive way.

rniles length, following the approximate narr"h boundaries of
ReeL,,, Fremington and Healaugh, beginning and ending in
Reeth. 'l'he route will run alongside the river iiwale, passing St
Andrew's church, then along Frernington Edge into
Arkengarthdale and across to the Water Splash and Great Pinseat
before ieturning to Reeth by way of Old Gang, SurrenJer t3ridge
and Healaugh.
Friday 25th August
4.30 - 6pm Street Party for local school children on Reeth Athletics
Ground. Games to be olganised by stafffrom Marrick Priory who
wili also provide First Aid cover. Catering will be organised by Mrs
Duck of The Copper Kettle. (The event will be held in Fremington
Sunday .,chool if wet).
Stewards will be supervising the route along the way and it will
be possible, for those who wish, to complete shcrter sections of
the walk. Advice will be given on the day
Saturday 26th August
Stalls on the green including local arts and crafts, and Farmers'
Market. The market will be officially opened at 10am by a local
child.
l0 30 - 4.30pm Reeth Fabric Craft Group will hold an Exhibition
Demonstrations in Reeth Methodist Chapel. Morning coffee and
afternoon cream teas will be served in the adjoining Schoolroom.

YOUR PRESENCE AT A FOCUS GI?OUP MEETING.
As some of you irray have read in the local papers I have been ernployed to research and
write an Arts Strategy for the district. l'm aware that a lot of people's responce was 'what's
one of them and why do we need it?' An audit of arts activity in 1997 revealed that there
was a phenomenal amouni of aclivity at every level throughoul Richmondshire: by individuals
and groups, professional and amateur, participant and consumer, at all ages and embracing
every aspect of the arts. Tlris helped to demonstrate that the arts are for everyone not
somethinE rarefied and remote They enrich our lives and bring a sense of well being The
arts also benefit our communities in cultural, social, econonric and personal developmenl.
Bearing those benefits in mind we need a strategy to help us to plan for the provision of the
future I am tryrng to put together an overview of current activity and identify the
strengths and the weaknesses, This will help to ensure that we are maximising existing
resources and identify where extra resources may be needed in the future. lt will also look
at ways of encouraging better collaborative working and see if we can develop a support
strucdure for local arts groups and individuals. The strategy will explore how the identified
actions will be financed and provide a tool in helping funding bodies (such as Lottery Boards,
European and Government offices, local and County Councils) to make informed decisions

second session between 7.30 and 9.OOpfir is for everyone.
The '97 Arts Audit suggested some options to meet identified needs - an agency or person to
assist Arts Development, the development of more exhibition space for visual artists, more
co- operation and sharing of resources, the development of certain spaces and venues
across the district to support arts activity, more iraining for ihose involved in the arts, a
Direclory of Artists (in the broadest sense) and resources, more help with promotton, more

The annual Leavers' Concert and prize giving was
held in the school hall on Friday l4th. July when

Mr G M llilsoil the children entertained an audience
grandparents, friends, trustees and governors with a delightful
parents,
concert. A mu-
sical introduction on piano and cornet was provided by paur wirhermy, Lynsey
Baibridge and Suzannah Barningham. The second item was a
sign & Frag
Dance, sensitively performed by the KS2 girls. The entire audience
was enthralied by the KSI children's presentaiion in words and music of ,Litiie
Moose,.
The concert was brought to a dramatic conclusion with a performance
of a Victorian rnelodrama, 'sweeney Todd' by the KS2 children. The audience enjoyed
the songs and the humour of the musicar pray and were greatry rerieved
at the
eventual demise of the Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
Headteacher, Mr Godfrey wilson, presented prizes for the best individually researched projects by the younger junior pupirs to; steven
Bainbridge,
Harvey Pilgrim, lsabella Haste and clare Louise Guy. on behalf
of the Friends
of Reeth School Trust, Mrs Clare Rose presented the Elizabeth Sinclair prizes
to
Lynsey Bainbridge and Robert Sunter and congraturated ail the chirdren
on the
high Quality of their projects. Mrs Rose gave book tokens to chirdren
who are

leaving to move on to Richmond Schoor- David coates, craire
stephenson,
Kirsty
Mills,
Joanne carvert, Robert sunter, Suzannah Barningham, Lynsey
Bainbridge and Nicola Matthews. Everyone took the opportunity
to wish these
pr:pils every success Curing the next stage cf their eCucation.
The Trustees were thanked for their varuabre, continuing support
of
the school and claire stephenson and Nicola Matthews gave flowering plants
to
Mrs Rose and Mrs Margaret Lockett, the secretary of the Trust.
The afternoon
concluded happily with a delicious tea for the leavers and their guests
prepared
by the school l<rtchen staff.
