Tune Up Your Trust
Back in high school
I remember my history teacher Mr. Alfieri holding up a dollar bill. The question
was how much was
it worth. The obvious answer was one
dollar. Mr. Alfieri’s
answer was “likely
less that one cent”.
His point was that
the dollar was only
a piece of paper and
that it was the trust
that we have in that
dollar that gives it its
value. Now one could
argue that it is worth
less as a dollar today
than it was then and
I would agree, but all
in all our entire monetary system is based
on trust.
We trust the car will
go when we step
on the gas having
no idea how it really
works along with that
it will stop when we
apply the breaks. We
trust our message will
get to its intended recipient when we hit
send on an email or
that the plane I’m on
right now will take off
and land at its destination without issue.

Trust is also important
in dance. Very often
when we ask someone to dance, there
is a certain amount of
trust that needs to be
present. The newer
or less seasoned we
are as dancers the
less trust there is. The
more
experienced
the greater the trust.
The thought I had
prior to writing this
was, “ One must trust
them self and their
partner if they are to
be truly good dancers” I thought about
the many years and
people I have danced
with. The most fun
and enjoyment I ever
got from dancing
was when cruising
the floor with a partner that knew exactly
what I was looking to
do. This works both
ways of course. Being that I’m the one
doing the driving I
need to have a good
lead in order for my
partner to know what
is expected. ESP is
not a good lead. But
a lead alone is not
good enough as the
person doing the fol-
lowing also has to be
good at interpreting
that lead and must
respond accordingly.
Once both partners
are in sync fun stuff
really starts to happen. No longer are
you wondering if you
will know what to do
next when following,
it almost becomes automatic. The person
leading almost stops
thinking about what
to do next or how to
do it. It sounds kind
of like a cliché but
“two become one”
and the magic begins. The lack of trust
is gone and things
can now take place
that have likely never
happened before.
Many of the things I
do in Hustle today are
results of these moments. Dancing with
a partner that gets
everything you throw
at her while being
completely
locked
into the music. The
brain stops working
and things just start
to happen on their
own. No more thinking while dancing is
an amazing place to
be. The next thing
you know is that you
do something you
have never done before. A move that creates a “what was that”
moment. The brain
turns on and you
might try to figure it
out. Sometimes you
can recreate it and
other times it
is just lost
forever.

but tactile. Feel your
partner, feel the music and just let the

more difficult than
I make it sound
but something
worth working towards.
Training
and technique are
important
but are not the
end all. Couples
dancing with each
other for years who
are not the best are as
likely to achieve this
