2011 Mobile and Transit Payments Summit
4th Annual 2011 Mobile and Transit Payments Summit Marriott City Center Hotel • Salt Lake City, Utah • February 15-18, 2011 INTRODUCTION 15 February 2011 On behalf of the Smart Card Alliance and NXP, welcome to the 4th Annual 2011 Mobile and Transit Payments Summit! 2010 proved to be the exciting year we all expected. Through major announcements and deployments across contactless banking, transit and NFC mobile payments, the convergence market is truly taking shape. We anticipate spirited discussions at this year’s payment summit. One look at the agenda and you will notice the importance that convergence is playing in today’s payment space. The inclusion of Mobile Network Operators, Payments Associations, Transit System Integrators, Application Providers and Infrastructure Providers illustrates the opportunity presented by the convergence of traditional payment, mobile commerce and transportation. We expect in 2011 that over 70 million NFC-enabled handsets will be deployed globally. This exponential growth will present opportunities for new and creative applications and services. This year’s summit is a fantastic opportunity to ensure that as an industry we are working together to open the full potential of these markets and complementary technologies. As we enter the summit I hope you all have the opportunity to reach out to your fellow attendees to share thoughts, objectives, concerns and strategies so that together we can build a successful market. By sharing our respective needs and objectives we can build on many established industry standards and proven technologies to ensure that collectively, we build an ecosystem that will be world- class. As a co-inventor of Near Field Communications and the global leader in providing contactless chip solutions for banking, transit, ticketing and access control, NXP is committed to building an open standard-based ecosystem that provides the security and value-based services expected by our customers. A note of interest; NXP has delivered over 3.5 BILLION contactless chips globally. NXP contactless solutions are used within 7o% of transportation ticketing systems and 80% of contactless security chips for consumer banking, government issued ID and passport programs are manufactured by NXP. Over the next few days I encourage you to reach out to me and my teammates. NXP’s presence at this event represents our commitment to the Smart Card Alliance, the Mobile and Transit space and to the mutual success of our fellow ecosystem providers. Enjoy the summit! Gemalto welcomes you to Salt Lake City and the 4th Annual Mobile & Transit Payments Summit. As we gather to engage on the world of advanced mobile and transit payment, it’s always refreshing to see the industry stakeholders including the chip and card manufacturers, terminal manufacturers, payment brands, issuing banks, payments processors, systems integrators and new mobile technology suppliers positioned for the challenges and technology adoption that awaits the U.S. market. I’d like to extend a personal thank you to each of you for joining us here this week. It can be said that mobile and contactless payments are fast becoming one of the most discussed trends across several industries. Mobile device manufacturers, retailers and banks, application developers - and the media - are attempting to understand the mobile payment ecosystem. Gemalto firmly believes that in addition to standardizing solutions and user interfaces, the understanding is payment security. When digital transactions with mobile payments become the standard means of financial transactions, the consumer will need to be protected from fraud, with a security design from the inside out. With over 20 years in secure transactions technology, Gemalto’s expertise with 450 mobile operators and 300 financial institutions worldwide positions us at the apex of securely converging these markets. Our qualification to guide standards and drive market innovation is proven through our numerous successful global pilot and commercial deployments. This annual event brings together two industry market segments – the mobile payments market and the transportation market for two days of industry focused educational sessions, along with collaborative sessions involving both markets and including opportunities for networking and group interaction. The Smart Card Alliance’s Payments Council and the Transportation Council helped organize this conference and select the speakers and topics for this event. The Payments Council is participating in its 4th in-person meeting, and its second meeting since expanding its mission to include mobile payments and other forms of bank card payments. This council has several active work groups focusing on mobile payments, consumer education and awareness, merchant business case and security. The Payments Council has just completed a major payments roadmap white paper and are engaged in defining new projects and launching new educational projects that will be discussed during their in-person meeting on Thursday during lunch. The Transportation Council is participating in its 6th in-person meeting and held its member meeting on Tuesday evening, which provided Council members and invited guests with the opportunity to review the status of transportation smart card initiatives and work together to discuss opportunities for collaboration and issues to deployment. This Council also held a full day Open Bank Card Payments in Transit workshop on Tuesday. This workshop was created to provide transit agencies and their suppliers knowledge about the trends towards open bank card payments being adopted by the transit industry to compliment, or in some cases, substitute for traditional closed loop transit fare payments systems. The workshop is being repeated at the APTA Fare Payments Workshop on March 27th in Miami, FL. During market specific track sessions on the two day program, the topics selected will be covering some of the latest trends and newest thinking about how mobile payments technology and applications are evolving, keeping a close eye on how the transit market will likely be included in many of the new mobile payments solutions reaching the market in the next year. The meeting will also include the status of current US and International transit programs, include presentations from related technology providers and integrators, review the results of current transit fare payment implementations, and look at innovative fare payments technology and applications that will lead to an in-depth discussion of these topics. The collaboration between the mobile and transit markets promises to provide for a rich educational experience and networking opportunity for all attendees. The Utah Transit Authority has partnered with the Smart Card Alliance again in 2011 and will be hosting an extra roundtable discussion session and a tour of their open bank card payments operation at the UTA headquarters near downtown Salt Lake City on Friday, February 18th for all registered attendees who wish to attend. Sign up lists are available at the registration desk. Council Resources • Annual Payments Summit meeting, where Alliance members focus on trends and projects that are accelerating the widespread acceptance, use and application of contactless and mobile technology for transportation applications and retail payments • Co-Branded Multi-Application Contactless Cards for Transit and Financial Payment • A Guide to Prepaid Cards for Transit Agencies • Planning for New Fare Payment and Collection Systems: Cost Considerations and Procurement Guidelines • Serving Unbanked Consumers in the Transit Industry with Prepaid Cards • Smart Cards and Parking • Transit and Contactless Financial Payment: New Opportunities for Collaboration and Convergence • Transit Payment System Security • Transit and Retail Payment: Opportunities for Collaboration and Convergence Transportation Council Resources can be found at www.smartcardalliance.org/pages/activities-councils-transportation Member Comments “It is important for all market participants to understand issues that each face in the use and adoption of contactless technology. The Transportation Council provides a forum for free exchange of ideas, a place to keep abreast of smart card projects in the transportation sector, and a place to talk with other key participants to move implementations forward.” —Christopher (Chris) C. Cipperly, formerAssistantTreasurer oftheWashingtonMetropolitanAreaTransitAuthority(WMATA) “The strength of a professional organization lies in the quality and the contribution of the individual members. So, I am looking to see how Booz Allen can contribute to make the Alliance more successful. The Alliance provides a forum for the smart card industry to share ideas and solve problems to allow any industry associated with smart cards to progress, as demonstrated through the formation of the councils. The Alliance and its members provide a repository of smart card information and industry contacts that is frequently referenced during execution of a client assignment.” —Willy Dommen, Principal, Booz Allen Hamilton “As measured by its ever increasing membership and spirited, focused participation by representatives from a broad spectrum of interests, the Transportation Council is clearly well-established as a core resource for transit professionals. Its value rests in its membership and their work products, which are at the forefront of innovation, free exchange of ideas and accurate information, and responsiveness to real-world issues that have an immediate effect on business outcomes. This value has been further enhanced by the growing, collaborative efforts with the Contactless Payments Council, which is a natural extension of the broader mission of the Smart Card Alliance as well as testimony to the strength and utility of contactless smart card technology. With the pace of innovation surrounding smart card business applications and technology likely to continue at breakneck speed, I am confident that the contributions of the Council to transit and the business community at large will only increase.” —Paul Korczak, ConsultantandformerAssistantChiefOfficer ofMetroCardSalesOperations,MTANewYorkCityTransit “The Transportation Council of the Smart Card Alliance is a vibrant forum for the thought leaders in public transit to discuss issues and opportunities with smart card technologies.” —MichaelNash,VPTransportationTechnology,ACS, A Xerox Company “The Council has been an extraordinary resource in providing information regarding trends and processes relating to overall transportation and smart card issues. The meetings have been forthright and targeted. The information provided is empirical and practical. The Council is recognized in the overall transportation industry and on multiple occasions we have quoted information provided by the Council. In addition, we have been able to network with industry peers and associates. The knowledge base and experience of the members provide a wonderful database of industry information.” —ThomasWunk,VicePresidentofOperationsforScheidt&BachmannUSAInc.
