The 15th annual Maimonides RBC
Dominion Securities Golf Tournament
was held on Thursday, June 1st 2006 at
the Pinegrove Country Club. The rain
didn’t dampen any spirits as we raised
an excess of $310,000 in one of
Montreal’s premier fundraising events.
All of the golfers, sponsors and
generous donors showed their
commitment to the Maimonides Suite
Dreams Campaign. This project,
already underway, will see the total
refurbishment of all of
the residents’ rooms
with dramatic changes
to furniture, lighting,
flooring, closets and
bathrooms.
We are especially
indebted to our
sponsors, without
whom the tournament
would not have been
possible. For the
second time in its 15 year history, the
Maimonides Golf tournament was
renamed in recognition of a very
generous donation from RBC
Dominion Securities. RBC DS is
dedicated to enriching the lives of
Maimonides’ residents through its
community support.
Margaret and Larry Nachshen
(President of the Maimonides
Foundation) and Julie and Gary
Nachshen, along with a new sponsor
this year Gluskin, Sheff and Associates
sponsored the dinner. Equinox
Financial Services and CIBC Wood
Gundy were equal sponsors of the
evening’s cocktails. Two new sponsorship categories were introduced this
year. Britton Electric was the T-shirt
Sponsor and Métaux Depot was the
Locker Room sponsor.
Morty Brownstein and Browns
Shoes, continue their support of
Maimonides as Score Card sponsor.
Glatfelter was this year’s Golf Cart
sponsor. Le Groupe Green was the
Bottled Water Sponsor. Sovereign and
the Quallenberg Group along with
Scotia McLeod were equal sponsors of
the Brunch. Standard Life was the
Sponsor of the Golf Photo cards.
We say thank you to all our sponsors,
volunteers and generous contributors.
The funds raised at this event make
such a difference to the residents at
Maimonides.

Centre Highlights
Looking back
•
Archie Deskin stepped down and Leonard Lewkowict was elected as president of the
Maimonides Geriatric Centre Board of Directors.
•
Bill 83, the health legislation which modified the existing health care law was introduced
in December 2004 and was finally adopted in the fall of 2005. Maimonides’ concern
continues to be the loss of representation on the Board of Directors.
•
A strategic planning committee, under the co-chairmanship of Diana Schweitzer and
Len Lewkowict was struck and has been meeting to redo the strategic plan for
2007-2012.
•
This year, an emphasis was put on the security and safety of our residents in relation
to risk management, prevention of pressure ulcers, the prevention of falls and
infection control.
•
Maimonides continues to attract a number of local, national and international visitors
from other institutions who want to see our milleu de vie approach.
•
Thanks to the Foundation, the following equipment was purchased: specialized
geriatric wheelchairs, specialized mattresses, a VAC machine, a Doppler, a Nu-Step
machine and bladder scanner.
•
The Suite Dreams project is in full swing with the renovation of 5 north the first to be
completed.
•
Dr. Marcel Arcand, the clinical Research Fellow at Maimonides, has begun an important
study on end-of life care in dementia.
•
Maimonides continues to be a leader in geriatric care with many ongoing research
projects being conducted.
•
•
NRC Picker Canada conducted a satisfaction survey of residents and families.
The Centre ended 2005-2006 with a small surplus of $1,350.

DONORS
RESPOND
TO NEEDS
Community
responds to
resident needs
The Maimonides Foundation has
found a donor for its new $20, 000
bladder scanner thanks to an article
that appeared in the Spring edition of
Perspective. The Donald Berman
Foundation wanted to contribute after
reading the piece entitled “Enhancing
Quality of Life, Foundation Supports
State-of-the-art Equipment”. “We are
extremely happy to be able to make a
tangible difference in the lives of
Sharing Expertise
residents at Maimonides,” says David
Muller speaking on behalf of the
Directors of the Donald Berman
Foundation. The community has
been very responsive to requests
published in Perspective. Last year, an
appeal to help the Foundation
purchase specialized wheelchairs
yielded several donors. Maimonides
thanks the readers of Perspective for
being so willing to help .
Maimonides Centre Board President Len
Lewkowict was recently appointed to the
Association of Jewish Aging Services (AJAS)
Board of Directors. AJAS is a unique forum that
promotes and supports elder services in the
context of Jewish values through education,
professional development, advocacy and
community relationships. The AJAS membership
is comprised of over 125 Jewish organizations
throughout the United States and Canada.
Leaving a Legacy. The gift of a lifetime.
Leaving a gift to Maimonides in your will is one of the most thoughtful
ways to benefit the community through a gift for the future. It’s a way
of leaving something of real and lasting value.
Legacy gifts are used to provide the financial resources required to
enhance the quality of life of the Centre's residents. The late Ben
Cobrin, the Founding President of the Maimonides Foundation
promoted the concept that you must “plant the seed, and Maimonides
will reap the benefits in future years.”
Bequests can be made for a specific purpose or to assist with the
Centre’s priorities at the time.
If you have a bequest in your will to Maimonides Geriatric Centre
Foundation, please let us know about it. We can keep you up-to-date
with developments at the Centre and honour you as a benefactor.
We are here to assist you and your advisor with your charitable plans
as they relate to Maimonides Geriatric Centre Foundation. For further
information, please contact Karen Flam, Foundation Director at
514-483-2121, ext. 2307.

MAIMONIDES PROUDLY
RECEIVES NATIONAL HONOURS
For the second time in five years, Maimonides Geriatric Centre has won one of
the most prestigious health care awards in Canada. This time, the Centre was
recognized for its Fall Prevention Program. The 2006 3M Health Care Quality
Team Award was presented in front of a crowd of 600 people at the annual
meeting of the Canadian College of Health Service Executives in Victoria, BC.
The award recognizes teams in health care organizations who are devising
innovative ways to improve the delivery of programs and services.
Japanese Delegation
Leading the way in geriatric care
Maimonides is sharing its expertise and knowledge on an international level. At the
request of McGill University and the Quebec government, the Centre recently played
host to two important delegations from Japan and Spain. The Japanese delegation
included physicians, researchers, nurses and therapists who were eager to learn about
Maimonides. The Spanish delegation included 36 elected officials from different
municipalities in Barcelona interested in studying how to improve quality of life in their
municipalities. Maimonides continues to lead the way in geriatric care and is pleased to
be recognized as a centre of excellence.
STAFF EXCELLENCE
Nechama Surik, RNA, recently won two of the province’s most important awards recognizing
her achievements in health care. The Prix d’Excellence Charlotte-Tassé, is an award given by
the Ordre des infirmiers et infirmières auxiliaires du Québec to one RNA in the province every
two years. Nechama also received the esteemed Mérite Conseil Interprofessionel du Québec.
This award is given to one person representing all the 45 Professional Orders with membership
in the hundreds of thousands. Nechama was recognized because of all her efforts that go above
and beyond the call of duty. This includes training staff about the proper use of hearing aids on
her own time as a volunteer. Congratulations!!!

ART FOR
HEALING
Changing the face of Maimonides
The power of art for healing
Earl Pinchuk and Gary Blair, Co-Founders, Art for
Healing Foundation.
The Maimonides Foundation has partnered with the
Art for Healing Foundation to bring art to the residents.
“Art brightens up the world. It changes the way we feel
and makes a positive difference in people’s lives,” says
Art for Healing co-founder Earl Pinchuk.
Pinchuk and Gary Blair, avid art collectors, created
the Art for Healing Foundation four years ago. In 2001,
while visiting a dying friend in the hospital, they were
disturbed by the sterile and drab environment. Around
the same time, Pinchuk got involved in organizing an
art exhibition with Montreal writer and art critic
Dorota Kozinska. Together, they visited artists’ studios
and galleries and Pinchuk began to notice the vast
amount of art that is never exhibited.
After their friend’s death, Pinchuk and Blair had long
discussions to find a way to bring art to the public.
Pinchuk turned his 40th birthday bash into a
fundraiser and the Art for Healing Foundation was
born. With the memory of their recent visits to the
hospital to visit their dying friend still fresh in their
minds, they knew that hospitals were the public place
they wanted to concentrate on.
“Everybody accepts hospitals the way they are,
often, old and bleak with no soul. Art creates life and
creates atmosphere,” says Blair.
Maimonides has received works by many artists
including Mamie Colton, Myrna Brooks Bercovitch,
Carol Rabinovitch, Marion Zimmer, the late Joseph
Prezament donated by his wife noted artist Rita
Briansky and artwork from the A. McKenzie Brockman
Collection.
“I suggested Maimonides as the place to hang my
husband’s artwork since the older I get, the more people
I know here. I am so thrilled with the gallery which treats
my husband’s work with such respect. He would
certainly be pleased,” says Rita Briansky as she admires
the paintings which now hang on the 5th floor. “Both of
my daughters, who live in Toronto, Anna and Wendy
Prezament, have been here to see the works and were
moved by the presentation,” adds Briansky.
The sale of Pinchuk’s family business last year has
enabled him to devote himself entirely to the
Foundation, creating significant expansion in 2006,
with many more projects on the way.
“We want to make a difference in the world that has
given so much to us,” says Blair.
If you have art to donate or would like more
information, please call Earl or Gary at 514-846-3811

DONOR NEWS
A JEWEL OF A DONATION
In honour of 60 years in the jewellery business, colleagues and friends of Betty and Lou
Goldberg recently made very generous donations to the Goldberg Endowment Fund
at the Maimonides Foundation. Donations came in from around the world to pay
tribute to this well-respected and admired couple. The Goldbergs have been loyal
supporters of Maimonides for over 20 years and have celebrated many milestones with
donations to the fund. Pictured are, from left to right, Eric, Lou, Betty and Joel Goldberg. Absent from
photo is Shelly Goldberg.
In Memorium
The Maimonides Geriatric Centre Foundation mourns the
recent passing of its Founding President, Ben Cobrin. Ben has
been the Foundation’s most successful fundraiser, each and
every year, and through his devotion the Maimonides
Endowment Fund has grown substantially. He served as
co-chairman of the Investment Committee since its inception,
and the annual income from this capital has grown significantly
each year. Ben was actively involved on the Centre Board for
more than 10 years, where he served as Vice-President. He was
the Chair of the Maimonides Medical Research Foundation.
One of Ben’s favorite events was the annual Maimonides RBCDominion Securities Golf Tournament which he attended each
year throughout its fifteen year history. He loved to sit in the
clubhouse during the cocktail party and sell every golfer as many
raffle tickets as he could! Ben was certainly more than the
greatest raffle ticket seller on record, he was a leader whose
guidance brought the Foundation to new heights. Over the last
30 years, he was deeply devoted and committed to Maimonides
and its residents, single-handedly raising over 10 million dollars
for the Foundation. If anyone ever deserved the title “Mr.
Maimonides” – Ben won hands down. We will miss him greatly.
Board member honours grandparents
A plaque was recently unveiled by the Admissions office in loving memory of the late Ida
and Nathan Levine, grandparents of Foundation board member Lawrence Young.
A generous donation from Caryl and Lawrence Young made it possible to renovate and
expand the Admissions office, which is very meaningful as it is the first room new residents
and their families visit when they come to Maimonides.
“My grandparents taught me the importance of tzedakah, and I’ve always wanted to
honour them with a charitable gift in their memory. I am proud to do it here at Maimonides
where my grandfather was a resident from 1976-1979,” says Lawrence.

FAMILY
SUPPORT
Visiting a loved one in long-term care
An opportunity for sharing
Turn questions into statements
about the here and now. For example
“Hi, mom, it’s Shirley” or “I like your
sweater.”
• If dad talks about someone who died
20 years ago, don’t say “Dad, Bob’s
been dead for 20 years.” Instead say
“I guess you are thinking about Bob.
He was very special to you.”
• Be patient. You need to allow time for
your relative to absorb, understand
and think about what you
have said. They need to be
given time to respond in a
manner that suits their
capabilities.
• If Mom is having difficulty
speaking, try to connect in a
different way. For example,
comb her hair, massage her
hands with lotion or give her a
hug. Make her feel appreciated
and validated as a person with
a lifetime of experiences.
• Keep in mind that it is not
important to fill every
moment with words and
conversation.
Depending
upon your elder’s present
level of health and abilities,
becoming comfortable with
silences and just being

reasonable and achievable
goal for you.
When older people develop sensory
losses, physical disabilities and cognitive impairment, they may be
admitted into a long-term care facility
like Maimonides. Visiting them in this
new environment can sometimes
be uncomfortable and you may not
be sure what to do. We hope this
information provides strategies to help
you have a meaningful and rich visit with
an elderly loved one in long-term care.
COMMUNICATION TIPS
• As language skills diminish for
people with cognitive loss, place less
emphasis on expecting answers to
your questions. Their capacity to
understand is usually greater than
their ability to express themselves
verbally. You can avoid frustration if
you do not expect them to “perform”.
Instead, provide them with
information.
• Try to avoid asking questions,
such as “What did you have for
lunch?” or “Do you know who I am?”

of interest to your relative. Pick a
theme for special times of the year.
Always check that the music is not
too loud for those with hearing aids
or hearing impairment.
• Bring in a family pet to visit, in
accordance with the Centre’s policy.
• Read a book, newspaper or
magazine to your relative.
Visiting your relative in a long-term
care facility means something very
different than visiting, for example, a
friend in an acute care hospital. The
long-term care facility is your relative’s
new home and most likely to be their
“home” for life. Meaningful visiting
takes place when the time we spend
is not only fulfilling a perceived
familial obligation but is socially
and emotionally connected time.
Communication is still possible, but in
different ways.

Baycrest Geriatric Centre publication.
ACTIVITIES TO ENHANCE
YOUR VISIT
• The best place to start is with a
previously enjoyed activity, interest
or hobby. It might be necessary to
adapt or simplify the activity.
• Go for a short stroll on or off the floor
with your relative. The outside
garden is a pleasant location.
• Attend an outing together off-site if
your relative is able. Discuss plans
with the recreation and nursing staff
at the facility.
• Listen to music that is familiar and is

Suite Dreams Renovation Update
Maimonides is very excited to report
that the Suite Dreams campaign
renovations are making huge progress.
The Suite Dreams Capital Renovation
Campaign is an ambitious undertaking
that will see the total refurbishment of
all resident rooms with dramatic
changes to furniture, lighting, flooring,
closets, bathrooms and overall quality
of life. The renovations will incorporate
all the advances in geriatric furnishings
that have occurred since the 1960’s
when Maimonides was built. All the
resident floors should be refurbished
by 2010.
The entire 5th floor of 70 rooms is
now completely renovated, with some
furnishings to come. Renovations on
the 4th floor have begun. Ceilings and
corridors are already being worked on
the 3rd floor.
It takes two weeks to complete three
rooms with the least amount of
disturbance to the residents. Residents
whose rooms are being worked on are
moved for the duration of their room
renovation into one of two solariums
which have been temporarily
converted into semi-private rooms for
three. An extra staff member, funded
by the Foundation, has been added to
ease the transition.
There are 255 private and 66 semiprivate rooms that need to be
sponsored. If you’ve had grandparents
or parents who were Maimonides
residents at one time, consider
sponsoring the room where they lived.
It is such a meaningful way to honor
them. Their name will appear on a
plaque by the renovated room to
gratefully acknowledge your support.
To arrange a visit or to discuss
sponsorship opportunities, please call
Foundation Director Karen Flam at
(514) 483-2121, ext. 2307.
Donor helps residents Suite Dreams come true
Volunteers and donors are the lifeblood
of Maimonides. vitally sustaining the
Centre and its residents. It is a rare
treasure to find someone who is both a
donor and a volunteer. Randi Greenberg
is both. She is on the Board of Directors
of the Maimonides Foundation,
volunteers her time with various projects
at the Centre and recently, after getting a
tour of the renovated fifth floor, made a
very generous donation to the Suite
Dreams campaign.
“It’s instant,” she says. “The
immediacy of it is so satisfying. I can go
up on the floors and see the construction
being done. It’s good to know where
your money goes and see the difference
it makes in the lives of the residents,”
says Randi.
Randi is a true champion for
Maimonides and the Suite Dreams
campaign. “It is our responsibility to
help our elders who have given so much
to the community.”
