Every breakthrough is a collective effort that combines and tweaks already existing ideas and technology in unique ways. History shows a very important truth -- inventions are seldom the work of any one mind. Every great invention is really a combination of minor inventions, or the final step of a progression. If you have an invention, you are encouraged to participate in the 4th Annual Marketplace/Northern Plains Inventors Congress Invention Contest that will be held in conjunction with Marketplace for Entrepreneurs, January 15-16, 2008 at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks, ND. The Invention Contest has a special category for Marketplace for Kids students that presented projects during Marketplace for Kids Education Days in 2007. This category is for students 13 and under. Frequently, an important invention is made before the world is ready for it. Inventions only become successful when they are not only needed, but when people are ready to appreciate them, to acknowledge the need for them, and to make use of them. Each invention may be just one small step on the road to the ultimate goal. Welcome to Marketplace for Kids 2007! If you’ve brought a project today, you have already discovered how exciting it is to be an entrepreneur or an inventor. Marketplace for Kids can help lead you to even more success and excitement in the future. Congratulations on accepting – and meeting – a big challenge! For those of you on a field trip to Marketplace for Kids, you’ve picked a great way to learn that opportunity can be fun. We hope that once you see what we do at Marketplace for Kids, you’ll be eager to accept the challenge of preparing a project for next year. You’ll never know what you can achieve unless you try! Congratulations on becoming involved! Thank you for coming, and please thank your parents, teachers, and everyone else who helped make this Marketplace for Kids Education Day possible. Have a great day! Kent Conrad United States Senator Roger Johnson Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Wayne G. Sanstead Announcements and Dismissal by School Mary Haugo and David Kahl Sr., Region 5 Co-Chairs Masters of Ceremony Special Music West Fargo Jazz Band “For the purpose of teaching geography,” John Spilsbury, a teacher in England, created the first jigsaw puzzle in the year 1767. Gluing his maps to flat hardwood, he used a fine saw to cut along the borders of the European countries, and the jigsaw puzzle was born. Hand-painted and made of wood, the puzzle was a map of England and Wales, with each county making up a separate piece. Featured Speaker Jane Alexander A Tribute to Marketplace for Kids Slideshow of the 2007 Marketplace for Kids Education Day ~ Soon, people began making picture jigsaw puzzles. Their purpose was to entertain rather than to teach. The pieces in these early puzzles were not interlocking. Not until the invention of power tools more than a century later did jigsaw puzzles with fully interlocking pieces come into being. THE WEST FARGO HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ BAND is a volunteer organization that rehearses early Wednesday and Friday mornings. Students in grades 9-12 participate in the group which has played for Marketplace for Kids, Marketplace for Entrepreneurs, the West Fargo Business Expo, Toppers Car Show and tours locally each spring. MONIQUE LANDMAN is currently a junior at Fargo North High School. She has been in choir for over seven years, and has been in All-State and other Honor choirs. She has been student of the quarter, is in National Honor Society, has been in Honor band, and is the choir president. She plays softball, tennis, runs in track, and is active in a Leadership Council called CYAC (Catholic Youth Advisory Council). In her spare time, she enjoys roller blading, spending time with friends, going for walks, and volunteering at her church. THE FARGO NORTH HIGH SCHOOL SPARTACAS are superb performers who have won many awards both at the state and national level. They are the 2006-2007 State Pom and Novelty Champions, and 3rd place winners in the Jazz and Kick categories. They are coached by 2006-2007 ND Coach of the Year, Felicia Farrell. JANE ALEXANDER has been doing morning radio in Fargo/ Moorhead for the past 25 years. She is part of the longest running morning show in Fargo/Moorhead. She adores her husband, kids and pets. She has a daughter in high school, and a son in college. She has two dogs and two cats. She also has an organizing business where she organizes peoples’ homes, businesses, etc. - basically everything but her own stuff! She loves all kinds of music, books and quiet time. TOM SZYMANSKI always seems to get asked: how tall are you, what’s your shoe size and not so obviously, “How’s the weather up there?” The answers to the questions are: 6’ 10”, 16 and “Fine!” Obviously, “Too Tall Tom” gets a lot of those questions because he gets out a lot. Over the past 8 years, Tom has made close to a thousand appearances up and down the valley, speaking to students, civic groups and agricultural and educational seminars. A special thank you to Wendy Altendorf, Region 2 Minot Co-Chair, for use of the “fun-activities” you’ll find included in this education guide! 5Fargo ALL STUDENTS: 8:55 - 9:10 a.m. 9:10 - 9:30 a.m. 1:40 - 2:00 p.m. Pre-Opening Ceremony Entertainment (Olson Auditorium) Opening Ceremony (Olson Auditorium) Closing Ceremony (Olson Auditorium) Class Grid Continued On Pages 8-9 5Fargo ALL STUDENTS: 8:55 - 9:10 a.m. 9:10 - 9:30 a.m. 1:40 - 2:00 p.m. Pre-Opening Ceremony Entertainment (Olson Auditorium) Opening Ceremony (Olson Auditorium) Closing Ceremony (Olson Auditorium) Class Grid Continued On Pages 8-9 5Fargo ALL STUDENTS: 8:55 - 9:10 a.m. 9:10 - 9:30 a.m. 1:40 - 2:00 p.m. Pre-Opening Ceremony Entertainment (Olson Auditorium) Opening Ceremony (Olson Auditorium) Closing Ceremony (Olson Auditorium) Class Grid Continued From Pages 6-7 5Fargo ALL STUDENTS: 8:55 - 9:10 a.m. 9:10 - 9:30 a.m. 1:40 - 2:00 p.m. Pre-Opening Ceremony Entertainment (Olson Auditorium) Opening Ceremony (Olson Auditorium) Closing Ceremony (Olson Auditorium) Class Grid Continued From Pages 6-7 Class A: How to Prepare for the Career You Really Want! His younger brother, Will Keith Kellogg, was the business manager. The hospital stressed healthful living and kept its patients on a diet that eliminated caffeine, meat, alcohol, and tobacco. The brothers invented many foods that were made from grains, including a coffee substitute and a type of granola, which they forced through rollers and rolled into long sheets of dough. One day, after cooking some wheat, the men were called away. When they finally returned, the wheat had become stale. They decided to force the tempered grain through the rollers anyway. Surprisingly, the grain did not come out in long sheets of dough. Instead each wheat berry was flattened and came out as a thin flake. The brothers baked the flakes and were delighted with their new invention. They realized they had discovered a new and delicious cereal, buy they had no way of knowing they had accidentally invented a whole new industry. Will Keith Kellogg eventually opened his own cereal business, and its most famous product is still sold today. It wasn’t until 1906 that Kellogg’s Corn Flakes were made available to the general public. In 1909, the very first cereal premium was offered: The Funny Jungleland Moving Pictures Booklet available with the purchase of 2 packages. The offer was available for 23 years! 11 Class Q: Explode Your Business from cha-ching to CHA-CHING! Class T: How to Protect Million Dollar Ideas! Class W: How Did They Do That? In 1920, the first true hair dryer came on the market, but it was extremely large and heavy, and frequently overheated. Since then, thousands of patents have been issued for different hair dryer designs, but most of them only tweak the outside packaging of the hairdryer so that it looks more appealing to you. The inside of a hair dryer hasn’t changed too much over the years. Not until 1951 was the first really workable dryer made. The device consisted of a hand-held dryer connected to a pink plastic bonnet fitted over the woman’s head. 26 (As of April 26, 2007) Bennett Elementary School Ms. Belgarde B-Q01 Swheat Scoop Cat litter. We will never know the reason, but it is a fact that Josephine was accident prone. During the first week that she was married to Earle Dickson, she cut herself twice with the kitchen knife. After that, it just went from bad to worse. It seemed that Josephine was always cutting herself. One day, her husband had an idea. He sat down with some tape and gauze and a pair of scissors. Then he cut the tape into strips. In the middle of each strip he stuck a little square of gauze. From then on, whenever Josephine had an accident, ready-made bandages were on hand for her to use quickly and without a lot of fuss. At Johnson & Johnson, they heard about these new bandages that could be put on in thirty seconds. Soon the company was making them to sell on a small scale. Four years later, in 1924, the company installed machines for mass producing the new product, and the trade name BAND-AID was adopted. 38 “” 5Fargo Concordia College, Moorhead, MN Minnesota State Community and Technical College, Moorhead, MN Cooperative Alliance of Northern Plains Electric Cooperative & Dakota Valley Electric Cooperatives, Carrington, ND ComMark, Inc., Portland, ND Neustel Law Offices, LTD, Fargo, ND Concordia College Staff and Volunteers Mayor Dennis Walaker Careers on Wheels Exhibitors Minnesota State Community and Technical College ND20061 Air Force Jr. ROTC from Fargo Public Schools and Director John Evans Opening and Closing Ceremony Guests Tom Szymanski Jane Alexander West Fargo Jazz Band and Director Sue Jordahl Marilyn Laliberte Teachers, Chaperones, Advisors and School Bus Drivers Monique Landman Moorhead Police Department Parents, Family and Friends of our Students Class Presenters School Board Members of our Participating Schools Fargo North Spartacas and Coach Felicia Farrell Wellness/Education Center Exhibitors Dana Diesel Wallace Region 5 Leadership Team Members Marketplace for Kids Volunteers Administration of our Participating Schools Grandma said she’d make her handmade cherry pie if you can figure out this problem: Given three bowls and 12 cherries, can you arrange the fruit so that there are an odd number of cherries in each bowl? Not exactly. Ivory Soap floated by accident. For years, the Procter & Gamble company had been developing a formula for a high quality soap at an affordable price. In 1878, they finally perfected the formula. They called it simply “White Soap,” and began production. Several months later the accident occurred. In 1847, Joseph Fry discovered a way to mix some melted cacao butter back into defatted, or “Dutched,” cocoa powder (along with sugar) to create a paste that could be pressed into a mold. The resulting bar was such a hit that people soon began to think of eating chocolate as much as drinking it. Many people credit this as the very first chocolate bar for eating. John Cadbury added a similar product in 1849, and by today’s standards these original chocolate bars would not be considered very good. The early eating bars of chocolate were made of bittersweet chocolate. Milk chocolate was introduced in 1875 when Henry Nestle, a maker of evaporated milk and Daniel Peter, a chocolate maker, got together and invented milk chocolate. In 1879, Rodolphe Lindt thought to add cocoa butter back to the chocolate. Adding the additional cocoa butter helped the chocolate set up into a bar that “snaps” when broken as well as melting on the tongue. A large batch of White Soap was mixing when a workman at the factory went to lunch and left the machinery running. When he returned, he found that air had been worked into the mixture. He decided not to discard the batch of soap because of such a small error, and he poured the soap into the frames. The soap hardened and it was cut, packaged, and shipped. At the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago, chocolate-making machinery made in Germany was displayed. It caught the eye of Milton S. Hershey, who had made his fortune in caramels, and saw the potential for chocolate. He installed chocolate machinery in his factory in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and produced his first chocolate bars in 1900. A few weeks later, letters began arriving at Procter & Gamble asking for more of the soap that floated. The workman’s error had turned into a selling point! 41 “Marketplace for Kids is one of my favorite events. It’s great to see the fun, clever and often ingenious ideas that our students can think up – some are so good they are ready for the commercial Marketplace!” Kent Conrad U.S. Senator “Seeing and hearing the enthusiasm of the young people as they explain their ideas and demonstrate their projects renews my own enthusiasm and confidence in North Dakota’s future. Marketplace for Kids isn’t just for kids; it’s a great experience for everyone who gets involved.” Roger Johnson Agriculture Commissioner “Marketplace for Kids is a premier educational experience. The 3 E’s – Energy, Enthusiasm, and Education – come together as our young students showcase their products and inventions, traveling from class to class learning critical thinking, problem solving and innovation methods.” Dr. Wayne G.
