December 2014 B&G Happenings WOMEN’S BASKETBALL UPDATE By Coach Craig Simmons The energy and positivity in this basketball program this year is special! The girls truly care about each other. The main point I have stressed since day 1 this season has been, “SUPPORT EACH OTHER” & “POSITIVE TOUCHES”. We high 5 each other every chance we get. We support each other when we do something good or make a mistake. This is our Patriot’s Basketball culture. Coming off a successful Fall Basketball season, the 2014 Patriot’s Women’s Basketball program is poised for a bounce back season this winter. I am very excited to be leading the program this year. The Off-Season participation was the highest it’s been in my 4 BECOME A B&G MEMBER TODAY: • Stayed connected with your sport through this newsletter • B&G ONE TEAM Tee Shirt • 10% off John Carroll shop years at John Carroll. This year, I am blessed to have two senior captains (Ashley Hunter and Ola Ekundayo) taking charge on and off the floor. After being totally decimated with key season ending injuries to two starters in 2013, the Patriots are healthy and primed to be competitive in the IAAM “A” Conference in 2014. We also brought in a very talented Freshman class this year that will be the building block for this program for years to come. With a nice blend of experience and youth, the Patriots look to get back on track in 2014. • Have fun and reconnect with your team and Alma Mater • Go to www. johncarroll.org to become a member today! FOOTBALL TEAM 10 POINTS FROM UNDEFEATED SEASION A 5-4 record does not reflect the success the football team had on the GRIDIRON this season. After a great camp the football team had very impressive scrimmages handling both Loyola and Oxford. Week 1 on the road proved to be the start of a competitive season for the Patriots which suffered a 3 -0 loss. Big wins over Parkville and Delmar built confidence for the Pats heading into week 4 matchup with “A” power Calvert 22 to 21. A team that never quit, worked hard, and stuck together went on to win 3 straight including a crowd thrilling 4 0vertime victory over Boys Latin. Heading into the final week with one win away from going to a championship, the Patriots lost 12 to 7 to Curley who would go onto win it all. The Patriots had a 3 way tie for the other championship spot with St. Paul’s and Boys Latin, however with the “’..Love these kids so much, they never quit, always believed they would win...such team love and family, this group is very special...” Head Football coach Keith Rawlings BLAGK & GOLD PURPOSE • To participate in advancing the School’s mission. • Hall. Up 13 to 0 at half, only to suffer a 14 -13 loss, the team was very impressive and still had a chance to win the game! After a bye week the team suffered yet another 1 point loss to St Paul’s 2 tie breaker rules, St. Paul advanced. The MIAA league is exploring playoffs for next season. "Love these kids so much, they never quit, always believed t h e y w o u l d win, not once did anyone p o i n t fingers or blame: such team love and family, this group is very special and are the stepping stone for the program’s greatness for years to come," stated Coach Rawlings. FIELD HOCKEY UPDATE By Coach Gary Scholl John Carroll earned the “B” Conference Championship in an exciting double overtime 2-1 win over Maryvale. That is just the beginning of describing a truly unique season and wonderful group of student athletes. Here is just a partial list of reason sthis team was special. ORGANIZATION Chair –Matthew Stangle Finance—Lauren Milan Membership—Mike Stewart Future Patriots—Mike Stewart Scholarship chair—Meaghan Giorno Alegi Liaisons: It was the last team to play on the grass field at John Carroll. The girls loved this field and honored it by not losing a single game on the field. Could there be a better way to end so many years of great teams and great memories? We will be out on the field tomorrow one last time to celebrate all the victories this field has given to so many John Carroll women. Baseball-Steve Lutche The last time we played Maryvale in the championship we ended as cochamps. This year we faced them in the exact same situation as 2005. They were undefeated, were the first seed, and they expected to win. In 2005 we took a share of the championship, this year we did not share. Lacrosse (W)-DiNetta Kerfoot The winning goal in the championship game was scored by Charlotte Haggerty. Both her parents are JC alumni. Charlotte is their third daughter to attend John Carroll and the second to play field hockey. Charlotte continues a tradition of alumni children playing on the team. Wrestling-Keith Watson The best part of this season was the girls on the team. They are smart in the classroom and on the field. They were fun and had fun always. There was no drama, no self-promotion. They cared for each other, they worked hard to get better every practice, and they had heart. They were competitors who never quit, no matter what the situation was. They had wisdom about how things work: how teams work, how to build endurance, how field hockey works, and what character it takes to be a champion. Sudbrink, ‘88 Vice President for Institutional Advancement Neala Lancellotti, Director of Development and Alumni Relations Lauren Milan, Advancement Associate I have coached 27 different teams over my years at John Carroll. This team brought as much joy and satisfaction as any of the teams. I feel blessed to have been a part of this team and this season. They represent the best of Patriot tradition. 3 NATIONAL SIGNING DAY November 12th marked the start of "early signing" for national letter of intents for seniors to officially commit to their scholarships. John Carroll is going to have a breakfast/photo shoot/mock signing, tentatively scheduled for December 2nd for the Division I signers. Several John Carroll student athletes are anticipated to compete in college athletics next year. Senior Bridgette Lutche signs a letter of intent to play Lacrosse for Winthrop University. WOMEN’S TENNIS UPDATE Excerpt from iaamsports.com, by Nelson Coffin John Carroll seemed to have little trouble in garnering the B Conference tennis title in windy conditions at McDonough School on a cool Thursday afternoon in October. Alexa Martinez claimed her second consecutive No. 1 singles crown for the Patriots by shutting out St. Timothy’s Kara Hoban while her John Carroll teammate Luisa Schulte-Tigges, a junior German exchange student, was almost as dominate in beating Anne Tobin of Friends in the No 2 singles final. With the No. 3 doubles tandem of Bridgett Lutche and Molly Exter prevailing over Danilella Rochamimov and Rachel Yusuvov, the Patriots were easy winners after going unbeaten in the conference and 5-1 overall. Members of John Carroll’s tennis team celebrate after wining the B Conference. MEN’S BASKETBALL UPDATE USA Today ranks John Carroll’s Basketball team 25 the country in their preseason poll. Junior power forward Michael Tertsea (10 ppg, 8 rpg 2 bpg) returns, along with two senior guards in Bucknell commit Kimbal MacKenzie (16 ppg, 3 rpg, 3 apg) and Florida Gulf Coast commit Elijah Long (10 ppg, 4 apg, 4 rpg). Freshman guard Immanuel Quickley is already getting offers and junior guard Michael Asemota, a transfer from Canada, will be a big part of the Patriots. “I is important to provide perspective. I caution anyone to put too much stock in rankings that are for fans, talk radio and water cooler conversation. The facts are we are not even selected to finish in first place in our own powerful BCL/MIAA A Conference. The national publicity will help our student-athletes, program and school,” Coach Tony stated. WRESTLING UPDATE by Coach Keith Watson This year's team is loaded with senior talent, lead by 4 time national champion Hunter Ritter (Perryville) along with returning All American's Chris Almony (Joppa) and Zach Dwyer (Kingsville). There are also 5 returning State place winners from last year's squad. A fine incoming freshman group are led by Jr League State placers from the Fallston Jr program, Luke Strappelli (Bel Air) and Adam Berg (Churchville). In addition, there's a strong crop of athletic upper weights coming over from John Carroll's football program This year's schedule is as tough as ever, featuring 2 of the country's top tournaments and dual meets with schools from Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and Pennsylvania. Having a large group of seniors can be a blessing and a curse. Keeping the seniors focused on the task at hand is always a trick due to the distractions associated with choosing college, etc. We have 7 seniors who are being actively recruited. Regardless, our wrestlers have worked hard to maximize their athletic potential in preparation for the upcoming season, this year's team is as strong if not stronger than any team in recent memory.
