IDS, a dreadful disease, stands for Acquired
Immunodeficiency Syndrome. HIV or Human
Immunodeficiency Virus causes the disease. The
main cause of HIV transmission is unprotected
sexual activity. Passed only through direct contact,
HIV can be transmitted through body fluids, such as blood,
semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk. As there were
cases of persons getting affected with HIV through blood
transfusions, rigorous blood screening and testing have been
made mandatory in many developed nations.
World AIDS Day is observed every year on December 1. It
is a great opportunity to create awareness among the public
about HIV and raise funds. The day is important as it reminds
the public and the government that HIV has not gone away and
there is still a great need to raise funds, increase awareness,
fight prejudice and improve education.

‘Beauty reflects personality’
Born in the family of legendary classical dancers
Lalitha, Padmini and Ragini known as Travancore
Sisters, Shobana followed in their footsteps quite
early in the life with training in Bharatanatyam.
A famous classical dancer and also a national
award winning actress, she has performed in
several music and dance festivals in India and
abroad. In an interview with Future Medicine,
Shobana expresses her views on health and
beauty and says how these are related

Beauty and health- In your opinion, how are
these two related?
Both have own measurements. If we give more
importance to beauty, it will affect our health because
we don t know what will happen to us in the next
moment. So if something happen wrong and affect our
beauty, we will be mentally upset and depressed. On the
other hand, if we maintain our health, beauty will come
naturally.
What is your perception of real beauty of a
woman?
Real beauty is only a concept. It is different from
person to person. It is something related to our attitude,
culture, vision and all. It is a total state of harmony.
Diabetes DISEASE SPECIAL
Metabolic disease
Type 2 diabetes is rampant among Indians.
Hereditary, overweight, sedentary lifestyle
and stress are the main factors leading to an
alarming rise in the incidences of diabetes in
the country. Up to 8% of villagers and 16% of
city dwellers in India have diabetes. They are
also falling prey to the disease at an earlier age
than the westerners
By Dr Arpandev Bhattacharyya
D
iabetes has
affected mankind
for hundreds
of years and is
referred in the old Sanskrit
texts. It is a chronic
metabolic disorder with
high levels of sugar in the
blood. The word diabetes
means siphon and mellitus
stands for sweet. Diabetes
and Diabetes Mellitus
are used interchangeably
in day-to-day practice.
A gland in the tummy
named pancreas secretes
a hormone called insulin,
which controls blood sugar.
In India, we are mainly
concerned about type 2
diabetes. Family history of
diabetes is the major risk
factor. If you have a family
history, your chances
of diabetes is higher
than general population.
Sedentary life-style, obesity,
smoking, excessive alcohol
intake, high blood pressure
and in the case of women
previous diabetes in
pregnancy or delivering big
baby (birth weight more
than 4kg) are risk factors
for diabetes.
Hereditary disease
Heredity has certainly
a big role to play for it
to happen. Till recently,
we thought hereditary
character of diabetes
follows Mendell s principle
that is if both the parents
have diabetes, all their
children will get it and
if one of the parents has
diabetes and the other
is healthy, their children
remain free from diabetes.
Now, we know this is
not correct, but we do
not know how exactly
heredity plays role. Some
of us believe that diabetes
develops not because
the person has inherited
defective chromosome from
his parents but because
he has not received the
protective chromosome
from his parents.
In short, it can be said
that even though hereditary
factors do play a role in the
development of diabetes,
to what extent and in what
way these factors act is still
a mystery. It is correct to
tell that hereditary factors
can become effective
only when certain other
environmental factors
like obesity, faulty dietary
habits and inadequate
physical exertion are at
work.
Prevention
If you have genetic
risk of developing diabetes
because of family history,
you cannot do anything
about that. Things you
can do are healthy eating
(i.e., eating vegetables and
fruits, avoiding fast food),
healthy lifestyle (regular
exercise, avoidance of
smoking, moderation of
alcohol, etc) and keeping
your weight in accordance
with your height. It is
in these circumstances
that good friends, family,
religion, yoga and
psychologists can be of
real help in countering or
reducing stress and stressrelated problems.
