Jack 2001-2004
to
Lend a Hand”
2012 has been an amazing year for
Jack’s Helping Hand. Your consistent
generosity has again allowed our
Assistance Program and Medical
Therapy Units to keep up with the
needs and demands of our community’s special needs children. This was
also a year of many surprises and
accomplishments.
In March we opened our third adaptive toy lending library, Pat’s
Place, in Nipomo! Pat’s Place is off to a running start thanks to
our volunteers who ensure that our special toys and equipment
are available to our clients at no cost whatsoever.
It wasn’t long thereafter, thanks in no little part to the generosity
of Steve Souza Construction and John Negranti Construction,
and with the help and assistance of many volunteers, that we
overcame years of deferred maintenance on Illinois Avenue, and
refurbished that entire roadway leading to the Jack Ready
Imagination Park.
More surprises, thanks to Russ Lovell and friends, and the
sponsorship of Blue Rooster Telecom, an inaugural golf tournament seeking to raise funds for the Park, was held on
September 28th, at Monarch Dunes golf course. To describe
the tournament as a success is wholly insufficient. It was an outrageous success, and established a whole new approach for
funding and eventually maintaining the Park, which we’re going
to do our best to continue on into the future.
Our annual event at the Santa Margarita was a sell-out, and the
members of our community in attendance provided more support for our programs than ever before.

Our vision has always been to build the
Jack Ready Imagination Park, a universally accessible park for people of all
abilities that will enhance the emotional, physical and social development of children with special needs
as well as teach compassion and acceptance. We have spent the
past five years in the planning phases of this incredible goal and
this year the Park made considerable progress. With the generous contributions from Steve Souza Construction and John
Negranti Construction, the roadway leading to the Park on Illinois
Avenue was cleaned up, cleared out and completely refurbished.
The existing Park land also had pathways cleared in accordance
with the master plan. A special thank you to the San Luis Obispo
County Parks Commission and the County Board of Supervisors
for the recommendation and approval of $500,000 in available
park funding committed to the Jack Ready Imagination Park.
These funds bring us so much closer to breaking ground and commencing the construction of our dream park. We recognize that
when we include, rather than exclude, children and adults with any
degree of challenge, we not only foster friendship, acceptance, and
understanding, we also witness the strength, resilience, courage
and joy of these amazing children-a gift
the whole community
benefits from.
We know that it’s only through the support of the generous people throughout our community that Jack’s Helping Hand is able to
continue to meet the needs of our special children and their families. You make each of these good works possible, and we will
continue to do everything possible to fulfill your faith and trust.
Bridget and I had a dream when we established Jack’s Helping
Hand, but it’s each of you, as a part of our community that has
made that dream a reality. Through your support, assistance and
good wishes you continue to make wonderful things happen for
some very special children. Please accept our thanks!

Jack’s Assistance Program has been busier than ever trying to
meet the needs of our community. When there were no other
resources to cover the special needs for almost 300 children and
their families, we were able to fulfill requests for assistance with
equipment, medical treatment, housing and transportation.
We’re so blessed that Jack’s Helping Hand continues to be recognized by many civic-minded organizations and companies for the
good deeds we strive to perform within our community.
The San Luis Obispo Rotary De Tolosa Club, Three
Speckled Hens Antiques and Old Stuff Show, Central
Coast Cancer Challenge, and Kathy Ahern’s Laguna
Junior High Leadership Class, just to name a few, have all
provided generous donations towards the support of Jack’s Helping
Hand and our many programs.
Thanks to your generosity, we’ve provided more than $35,000 for
the following:
•
A Rifton SoloLift, a device that transfer individuals from
sitting to standing efficiently with zero lifting
•
Glasses, ear molds, hearing aids and microphones
for several children
•
A computer touch screen, a specialized wheelchair
and a specialized bike
•
Scholarships for the Little Swimmers and special
ability classes
Jack’s Helping Hand was the benefactor for a few new events this
year, including the inaugural Golf to Benefit Others Tournament at
Monarch Dunes Golf Course, The Sandlot Group’s Wifflefest, and a
fabulous block party sponsored by the Wallace Group.
With the untiring support of this
community we continue to be
able to meet the demands of our
children with special needs. We
cannot thank you all enough!
Over the last 12 months, we have also provided:
•
$41,000 to assist several families with medical bills
•
$62,000 for numerous families toward transportation costs
including gas cards, train and airline travel, and car rentals
•
Provided $59,000 towards the cost of food and lodging for
families of children traveling to UCLA Children’s Hospital,
Lucille Packard, Children’s Hospital Central California, and
the Craniofacial Center in Texas

We are so excited to share the expansion of the Jack’s Adaptive
Toy Lending Library. We opened the third Toy Lending Library,
Pat’s Place, in the South County at the Nipomo Community
Center. We are honored to name Pat’s Place for Patricia “Pat”
Hoelle, a quiet, calm, and loving person with a deep passion for
children and reading. As a mother of nine and grandmother of fifteen, Pat dedicated her life to the growth, success, and
happiness of kids. We are pleased that the Libraries are being
utilized by individuals, schools, and therapy facilities. The San

Luis Obispo location is at Central Coast Gymnastics, the North
County Adaptive Toy Lending Library, Katie’s Korner is located
on the lower floor of the Paso Robles Children’s Museum, and
Pat’s Place is located at 671 Tefft St., Suite 2 in Nipomo . The
Toy Lending Libraries are staffed with our wonderful volunteers.
If anyone is interested in volunteering at one of the sites, we
would be most appreciative. For more information please contact us at (805) 547-1914 or www.jackshelpinghand.org.

Jack’s Helping Hand’s commitment to the California Children’s Services Medical Therapy Program continued this year. We have helped over 250 children obtain services and assisted in acquiring and, at times,
supplementing the cost of therapy and therapy equipment. The therapists effectively referred many children to the Assistance Program and through these referrals we were able to meet the individual needs of
local children. Although the Therapy Units did not have any specific equipment requests this year we did
renovate the San Luis Obispo center’s waiting room with new, comfortable, easy to clean furniture.

The Little Swimmer’s Program is now in its fourth year
and going strong. What originally began as a seasonal program
has now become so popular that we have turned into a year round class.
Designed for children ages 2 to 12 with special needs, Little Swimmer’s
classes engage participants in fun water activities that encourage both
physical and social development. The combination of buoyancy and
gentle resistance of the water enable children to strengthen muscles,
learn new movement patterns and become more independent. The head
instructor, Kay Heaton, B.S.M.S Kinesio-Therapist, uses her warm water
therapy pool and provides classes year round. Instruction follows Red
Cross guidelines and parent participation to ensure utmost safety.

The Jack’s Helping Hand Sixth Annual Benefit once again was an extraordinary evening that exceeded
our expectations. The beautiful July weather and the enticing combination of food, drinks, and people
created the perfect evening of fun. It was a treat to see both new and familiar faces attend the event and
support this organization. This year’s hosts were local celebrity John Summer and Jack’s Helping Hand
celebrity, Owen Beck. We were lucky to have many recipient families present to enjoy the festivities.
Guests mingled and bid on a fabulous array of items in the silent and live auction while listening to the festive
Mariachi Peria Jalisciese. Wine donated by local vineyards, beer donated by Pacific Beverage, margaritas,
and a delicious menu provided by Cahoots Catering in Paso Robles created the perfect combination for success. We were pleased and honored to welcome back the always entertaining and supportive auctioneer Jim
Settle and his crew.
The live auction was a flourish of outstanding items including a week in the Italian countryside in a private
home, a week in the Hamptons, a weeklong trip for to Sun Valley, Idaho, a weekend at the beautiful Wisteria
House overlooking the Pacific, A weekend at the Indy Grand Prix in Sonoma, and a once-in-a-lifetime Del
Mar Thoroughbred Club weekend racing experience. Local items included two days and nights of wine tasting and dinner for four sponsored by Peachy Canyon Winery, Villa Creek Winery and Il Cortile, and two
packages with tickets for four to the “Savor the Central Coast” event sponsored by Sunset Magazine.
Additional items included Jazz night at the Mid-State Fair, McPhee’s Grill dinner and limousine, front and
center tickets to Brad Paisley and The Band Perry with a night stay at the Paso Robles Inn, a complete car
package including tires, oil service and detail, and the always popular and entertaining catered dinner for
eight with Paul and Bridget Ready.
The silent auction was filled with weekend getaways, local activities, golf, jewelry, overflowing gift baskets,
paintings, wine, home décor items, and baskets of kid friendly goodies. Kevin and Kathy Main created their
beautiful Jack’s Helping Hand gold medallion for our drawing and the winner was Sheryl Benjamin. Route 66
provided great dancing music for the movers and shakers to finish out the evening.
Thanks to the overwhelming and generous spirit of our community, the event raised over $200,000. These funds
will go directly into the Jack’s Helping Hand Assistance Fund to fulfill the new and ongoing requests for assistance
with equipment, specialty items, medical costs, or transportation.
