Meeting Night Reminder!
This is my final message as I’ll be passing the torch to
next year’s President, Chris Shores-Hauge. I have had a
fabulous fun-filled year as your President. Met many new
members, or really just met and interacted with a lot of
members, we have grown with new members, lost some
of our older members. Changes to our general guild
meeting, alternating speaker first then the next month
business meeting first; this has allowed our members
who have to leave early due to work to hear our speakers. I have had a positive response to this change, hopefully this will continue.
Speakers and classes this year have been wonderful,
thank you Nancy Causey and Jonell Carter. They added
member teachers to our months that we don’t have
speakers, was great, and only $10 a class. I made a
commitment this year to attend as many classes as possible. I believe that I did nine. I have my quilt top completed from Jessica Darlings class; My Happy Village quilt
top is almost ready for quilting, then embellishments.
Sandra Bruce’s Pincushion Picture quilt has one row
done, HELP!!!!!!! My Castle and Spiral quilts are works in
progress, so you all know what’s going to be on my UFO
list next year. I’m not listing all my unfinished classes it
would take the whole newsletter.
Retreat, thanks to Delores Wydra, was a great success
and lots of fun. This was the first retreat that I have ever
been on. Delores, have fun on all your traveling projects
next year.
The Quilt Show was a great success due to David
Carter’s wonderful layout of over 300 quilts. Thanks to
the members for showing all the wonderful quilts, we
have some very talented quilters. Hopefully, next year we
will see lots of quilts too.
UFOs? Well, this year I haven’t completed one, so next
year I’m going to have to get back to business.
I have spent this year getting to interact with members
that I know have been with the guild for a long time and
new members. It has been great learning to put faces
with names. I hope that everyone has had a good year
and that you will continue to meet and greet our new
members. It’s a little overwhelming coming into a large
guild and not knowing anyone. The best way to keep our
members is to make them feel welcome and to include
them in our activities. New members, introduce yourself,
volunteer, don’t shy away from us.
It’s hard to name everyone on the board and on the committees that have made this year so great, and I do thank
you and the membership for their support this year.
May you all have a Great Holiday Season, and a Happy
New Year.
Jacques Tucker
2015 President
Please remember to sign in and pick up your door
prize ticket when you arrive - this will save time later
when the time comes to draw the winning door prize
tickets. Remember to wear your name tags!
From Community Service:
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
For all your hard work this year, it is greatly appreciated.
Here is an updated count from last month:
We have delivered:
307 quilts for children
300 “lovies”
39 drawstring bags
20 receiving blankets
18 quilts for veterans.
A big thank you to Joyce Reece, she made most of the lovies. Also thank you to Joyce for allowing us to use her home
for our monthly meetings. It is a great place to work and enjoy each other’s company. We do have a good productive
time. You might want to consider joining us next year.
We had a good time at our annual Christmas potluck and
finished sewing on labels for the last quilts of the year.
Thanks to Janet Van Wert for hosting the lunch again this
year.
Thanks also to Penny Berggren and Charlotte Westlake for
being such great co-chairs for our committee. And thanks to
Arleeta and Alice for all their hard work at putting together
the blocks that you have all made during the year. They have
made many of the quilts we have contributed to the hospitals
for the children.
See you at the potluck!

Fat Quarter Exchange will resume in January.
Sometimes getting to know people at the Guild Meeting can be difficult as everyone is chatting with people
they know, submitting their fat quarters, checking out a
Library book, buying tickets for Quilters Treasure or
the Opportunity Quilt, participating in the block of the
month or checking out a quilt for the Community Service table. There is a lot going on at every Guild Meeting.
To alleviate this problem we have a number of Neighborhood Circle Groups across the city. Check out the
days, times and locations for the May meetings and
give the contact person a call and visit a meeting. You
may find just the right fit for you so that you too will be
chatting with friends at each Guild meeting or planning
a sewing night with friends from your Circle group.
For 2015, the Neighborhood Circle Coordinators are
Carole Girard ([email protected]) and Korey
Chase ([email protected]). If you wish to form a
circle, please send information about
the circle to the newsletter editor at
[email protected], and
it will be added to the list of open
neighborhood circles, shown below.
Also, if there are any changes for
existing circles, please contact Carole about that as
well. The following groups are accepting new members:

Quilt Show Chair Update
Final words on Worlds of Wonder and Whimsy
I hope that everyone had a good time at the show this
year. We pulled it off, hiccups and all! From set up
on Wednesday morning to tear down on Sunday
night, we were a busy bunch. This year, as always,
proved that we can’t have a great show without a lot
of help from our friends, family and guild members. Many people volunteered in the days, weeks
and months leading up to the show, to help us on so
many levels. We owe these unsung heroes for their
willingness to lend us their experience and expertise. Please let them know how valuable they are for
our guild both now and in the future, thank them for
me and your fellow guild members.
I’m sure most of you were as exhausted as I was on
Sunday night at 7:00 as we shut the doors to the
Scottish Rite Temple for another year. Rest up, get
your 40 winks plus an extra 40 because we start this
all over again in just a few weeks for A River Runs
Through It.
Thanks for everything,
Kate C.

In the Spotlight: Jacques Tucker
Jacques is the guild's outgoing president. Thanks,
Jacque, for all the hard work you have done this
year.
Here is Jacques’ story: "Born in Chicago Illinois
64 1/2 years ago and moved to California as a
child. My great-grandmother was a seamstress,
who taught her daughter and her grand-daughter
(my mother) to sew. My Grandmother taught me
to do embroidery and crochet with a steel hook
and thread when I was 8 years old. It was her way
of keeping me from being too antsy. I was hyperactive. My mother started teaching sewing at 4-H ,
so we were all taught around the age of 10 to
sew.
"I have 7 children. So sewing became a way that I
could afford to dress my children well. Although I
was taught by my mother, who was a perfectionist; I didn't feel my skills were up to hers, so I took
classes from Marilynn Stanley at American River
College. I have made anything from slobber rags
to suits, wedding gowns and the whole wedding
ensembles.
"Quilting came at a time when my Grandmother
died and we went through her stuff. There were
about 9 unfinished quilts for me and my cousins.
They were handed to me and told, "here you sew
can you finish them." I started at Stitching Station
taking a class on hand quilting. I started appliqueing at a class at Material Girls. For years that's all
I did. I fell in love with the Pansy Park Quilt by
Thimbleberries. At Quilters Corner, through those
Thimbleberry meetings and watching Alex Anderson, I learned to use a rotary cutter, ruler and
piece. I was comfortable with warm colors, Thimbleberries and Civil war for years.
"I joined the guild, got active with Opportunity
Quilt travel, then tried my first Quilt Challenge, the
year Symphony of Color was the theme. It was
my first work outside my box. I won The Challenge Theme award. I have won the theme one
more time, and this year won the Best use of Color/Fabric.
"The quilts that I have entered have all won some
kind of ribbon, I'm working on my precision so
that I will take home a blue. I wish. I have taken
just about every class the guild has offered this
year and am getting way away from that beginning
traditional quilting. I still love my Thimbleberries
fabric. I am currently using it in my Bonnie Hunter
quilt.
"I co-chaired the Quilt Show in 2013 and have
been President in 2015.
"I became a quadriplegic almost ten years ago. I
have had to learn to walk again and use my
hands. I have times when things seem worse, but
I believe in being positive and active. I enjoy being
social and I love to talk. Sometimes too much. "
Jacques is fun to talk to. Take time to introduce
yourself and get to know Jacque better if she is
not already a friend.

2016 Speakers & Workshops Schedule
Lenore Crawford
Lecture: January 19th
Title: Fusing, Fabric Painting, and Stitching to Create
your own Art Quilt
In this lecture Lenore will talk about how she has
evolved from other art media to using my own fusing
technique with fabric paint to create art quilts with depth
and color from photographs She has taken in my travels. She will tell how she creates a piece from beginning to end and give secrets She has learned on how to
make your design a winner. She has won prizes with
this new style of art quilting such as the Best Wall Quilt
at the 2007 AQS Nashville Show and the 2011 Moda
Best Wall Quilt at the AQS Show in Paducah for “Port
of Cassis” now residing at the National Quilt Museum in
Paducah, KY.
Workshop: January 20th and 21st
Title: Fusing and Fabric Paint
Description: Two-day/Six-hour Workshop
In this workshop, we will begin to design a small fused
project. We will work from one of my patterns shown on
the Patterns page of this website: Yellow Poppies, Red
Poppies, Yellow Cone Flower, Cone Flower or Rose,
since these are the least complex patterns for beginners. It will be outlined on freezer paper and then transferred to a background fabric on which the design will
be fused. No sewing will be done during the workshop—only the designing and fusing. You will learn how
to make your own patterns from your own photos focusing on value for depth and texture. I will also demonstrate how to add fabric painting to your design to add
detail and depth; students will do painting on their own
designs in the two-day workshops.
Costs: $70 class fee, $15 supplies fee

sented with a unique Lei. During this lecture a thorough, yet entertaining, history of the islands is given in
order to give the audience the necessary understanding of the island's culture. Over 30 Tifaifai (pronounced
tee-fay-fay) in various stages of production are shared
with the listeners. Each design has a purpose and story
which is explained and the audience is slowly lured into
a virtual tropical paradise! The traditional rules for designing a Tifaifai are also given as Dierdra encourages
quilters to create their own 'picture book' quilts from
paradise.
Workshop Date: June 22nd
Title: Tahitian Appliqué
Description: The Tifaifai is Dierdra's singular passion
because it exudes complexity when, in reality, its simplicity is unrivaled in the appliqué world. This free-form
appliqué method requires no pins, ironing, spray
starch, or major preparation. The secrets of laying out
the appliqué piece (which is cut while folded like a paper snowflake) onto the base fabric is shared and practiced in class. Students experience and learn about
grain lines, warps and wefts of fabric weave and then
baste their design with Roxanne Glue. The afternoon is
then dedicated to learning the five basic elements of
Needleturn Appliqué and Dierdra's tricks for easy precision. Lots of individual attention is given so that everyone can learn the techniques easily.

Title: What in the world is On Point Patchwork?
Description: On-point patchwork is something we
haven’t done much of since we stopped making templates for all our piecing. It is NOT about on-point quilt
sets but rather about pieced units set on point inside
the boundaries of blocks and borders. I’ll walk you
through the how’s and why’s of the problems we encounter with on-point patchwork and the simple mathfree solution that now allows us to make all kinds of
interesting blocks that our grandmothers made with
templates. This is an information- and quilt-packed lecture---the ideas will open up all kinds of design possi-
