Message from the Executive Director
Message from the Executive Director:
A. W. Beattie Career Center proudly provides recognized industry career and college ready instruction in our
eighteen program areas for students in grades 10-12 enrolled from the following school districts:
Avonworth, Deer Lakes, Fox Chapel Area, Hampton Township,
North Allegheny, Northgate, North Hills, Pine Richland, and Shaler Area.
A. W. Beattie Career Center students have the opportunity to excel beyond the classroom. Students have the
ability to participate in externship experiences, observing and working within their chosen field with local employers and
non-profit organizations while enrolled in high school. Our students have the ability to earn advanced college credits
and industry related certifications upon successful completion of their career program. The potential to earn as many as
seventeen college credits exists through successful program completion at A. W. Beattie Career Center; potentially
saving a family thousands of dollars.
While enrolled, students have the opportunity to earn Beattie Skills Certificates that demonstrate positive
academic career achievements, as a student builds confidence in their chosen field.
The staff of A. W. Beattie Career Center looks forward to providing these opportunities to area students.

SOAR and College Credit part 1
Dear A. W. Beattie Career Center Students and Parents,
Congratulations on your selection of a Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program of Study (POS). SOAR is a
Pennsylvania program which allows CTE students to earn free college credits. You have earned these free credits
if you score well on your NOCTI Senior year assessment. And if your teacher can confirm that you have completed
your entire CTE program. To obtain these free credits, you must submit the proper paperwork to the college, as
outlined below. This paperwork requires administrative signatures for submittal. Follow the instructions
carefully. You are responsible for this process, not your school.
STEP 1: SEE WHICH COLLEGES OFFER FREE CREDITS FOR YOUR CTE PROGRAM OF STUDY.
A website identifies which Pennsylvania colleges award free credits for each CTE Program of Study. Below are instructions
for this website.
To find the free credits offered for Pennsylvania Career and Technical Educational Programs of Study (POS) visit this
website http://www.collegetransfer.net/. After selecting your Program of Study and your high school graduation year,
you can view all of the colleges offering free credits for your particular CTE program.
How to find colleges and free credits offered:




Go to www.collegetransfer.net
Scroll over to the search tab at the top of the page
Scroll down and click on BUREAU OF CTE SOAR PROGRAMS
A box will pop up
o Step 1: Using the dropdown box, select your high school Program of Study By title or CIP
Code
o Step 2: Select your graduation year
o Click the Search button
A list of colleges will appear with the courses available for no cost and the majors that accept these credits at
the college. This list is updated annually; additional A. W. Beattie Career Center Programs have added college
offerings that are located as each program’s overview.

SOAR and College Credit part 2
STEP 2: APPLY TO THE COLLEGE AND COMPLETE FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION.
Complete the college application process and select a major that accepts the credits for your CTE Program of Study (POS)
high school program. It is best to do this in the fall of your senior year. To be eligible for any financial aid and most
scholarships, your financial aid application must be completed in the spring of your graduation year.
STEP 3: IN LATE MAY OR JUNE, AS SOON AS YOU GRADUATE, YOU FORWARD THE SOAR/POS PAPERWORK TO THE
COLLEGE ADMISSION OFFICE.
Below are the steps to properly complete and submit all the necessary materials to receive your free SOAR college credits.
If you have any questions, contact your career and technical center school counselor. It is your responsibility to submit
these materials to the Post-Secondary Institution. You must take charge of this process and make certain that everything
is completed and forwarded in a timely fashion.
SOAR/POS Paperwork to be collected by the student and forwarded to the college:




Copy of High School Diploma (you obtain at graduation)
Official High School Transcript (must be sent separately by high school counselor)
NOCTI Skills Certificate or Certificate of Completion (obtain from A. W. Beattie Career Center
POS Perkins Statewide Articulation Agreement Student Documentation Cover Sheet (obtain from A. W.
Beattie Career Center)
 Secondary Program Competency Task List signed by CTE program instructor (obtain from CTE program
instructor)
Mail these materials to the Post-Secondary Institution admission office – send as early as possible so that your fall
semester college schedule will reflect these college courses and credits.
Using the free college credit you earned through your performance and hard work at the CTC will help you progress in
your chosen career path. The credits are good for up to 3 years from you date of high school graduation. Collect these
documents, even if you are not yet certain of your college plans.
Good luck in your career and post-secondary studies. And congratulations for earning free college credit during high
school through your attendance at A. W. Beattie Career Center and in cooperation with your high school.
In addition, A. W. Beattie Career Center has a number of direct college credit articulation agreements with many
post-secondary institutions.
For additional information on any college credit opportunity please contact, Mrs. Zylinski, A. W. Beattie Career Center
School Counselor at 412-847-1912 or [email protected].

Externship Opportunities
Cooperative Education Coordinator: Joanne [email protected]
Vano 412-847-1914
General Description: Are you interested in earning a paycheck while earning grades? Cooperative education
adds a paid career-based learning component to the student’s training program. Participation in the Cooperative
Education allows the employer and A.W. Beattie Career Center to work together to meet the training needs of eligible
students. Seniors in their second or third year at A.W. Beattie Career Center are eligible for Cooperative Education and
attend A.W. Beattie Career Center one or two days a week and report to their job sites for the rest of the week. In all
cooperative education placement arrangements, the employment must be related to the student’s vocational course of
study. Students must maintain a C grade average, have good attendance, and be able to provide their own
transportation to and from the job site. Employers give grades based on students on the job performance. Students in
the program are also required to keep a logbook, timesheets, and wage records. Students participating in an
externship must meet jobsite specific industry requirements and clearances certification requirements.
Job Shadowing
A.W. Beattie Career Center encourages first year students to complete at least six hours of a Job shadowing
experience in order to earn Honors for their Introductory Skills Certificate. Job Shadowing gives students a chance to
work with an on-site mentor, ask questions, and learn more about the career in which they are interested.
Internships
A.W. Beattie Career Center offers second year students an opportunity to gain valuable work experience in their
technical course of study though internships. Students will visit their selected job site two to three days a week for a
specified period. Although Internships are unpaid work, experiences they provide many opportunities for future
employment.
Clinical Experience
Students enrolled in Health Science Technology, Early Childhood Education, Emergency Response Technology,
or Dental Careers have an opportunity for a clinical experience. These are career-related experiences and are provided
by hospitals, long-term care facilities, and private dental practices. The duration of clinical experience is determined by
state certification regulations and the facility providing the career-related training.

Mandarin Chinese
Confucius Institute Mandarin Chinese courses provide learners with a perfect combination of modern multimedia
technology and expert human teachers. The course represents the most current thinking and research on language
education and online learning. It takes advantage of what the computer can do best: provide personalized learning,
rich media content, and learning tools for language basics, ample culture content, and vast amount of exercises. But
unlike most computer-based learning or online language programs, we also provide live instruction through an expert
instructor to take care of what computers cannot do: high-level communication practices, relevant feedback, social
interaction, and instructions about learning strategies.
According to the Confucius Institute curriculum; to learn a foreign language successfully, one must have the following:




Exposure to large amount of engaging content in the language
Numerous opportunities to use the language for real purposes
Immediate and high quality feedback
Access to individualized learning content
Mandarin Chinese I:
This course offers students an introduction to Mandarin Chinese. In addition to building a meaningful vocabulary
students will learn the basic concepts of sentence structure, pronunciation, and writing. The course curriculum will
follow the model used by the Confucius Institutes across North America. This model has been in place for several years
and has been very successful.
Note:
This is a year long, full credit course. Students can participate in the course via the live video network
and do not need to travel to A.W. Beattie Career Center
Prerequisites:
This course will be offered through the A.W. Beattie Career Center and is open to students in grades
6 through 12 within participating districts. Students must have a 3.0 GPA.
Mandarin Chinese II, III &
IV:
Students who have successfully completed Mandarin Chinese I or can display adequate competency in Spoken
and Written Mandarin Chinese can enroll in the following courses. Students will be exposed to an increased vocabulary,
complex sentence structure, and intermediate level Chinese characters. Focus will continue to be placed on real world
applications of language, both spoken and written.
