Building Your Child’s Self-Esteem
Learn to Recognize the Signs of Drug Use
1. Be realistic. Don’t berate your child for not being perfect. Don’t think
you have to be the best parent in the world, either. If both of you try your
best, that should be enough.
2. Be the role model you can be. Your child watches you every second
you’re together. He or she will do as you do, not as you say, so do the best
you can.
3. Talk with your child, not at him or her. Show respect for your child’s
opinions.
4. Openly give your love with hugs, kisses and praise. The more a child
feels loved, the more he or she will listen to you.
5. Lighten up. Allow yourself to laugh when things don’t go as planned.
6. Get involved. Show your child you care about his or her life and education by taking an active role whenever possible.
7. Discipline with love. Treat your child fairly and firmly, to establish
a positive connection between the two of you. This will also give your
child a foundation of solid values for life.
8. Spend quality time together. Schedule time to be together to talk, do
chores, shop, watch TV or any other activity that will bring greater understanding and togetherness.
9. Think positively. A positive attitude is contagious! If you start the day
with optimism, so will your child.
10.
Celebrate life! Acknowledge everything good that you and your
child experience, no matter how small.
Praise can help your child learn to believe
in her or himself.

Addiction is very difficult to overcome, and it can lead to highrisk behavior. If your child is addicted to drugs, don’t hesitate to seek
professional help.
The most common reasons children start to use drugs include
curiosity, easy access to drugs at home or from their peers, boredom,
stress, poor self-esteem, rebellion, to forget their troubles, lack of knowledge about the dangers of drugs, desire to feel older, pressure from peers
and imitation of family members, friends or other people they admire.
A child with good self-esteem is less likely to want to use
drugs. Here are 10 ways to build your child’s self-esteem.

Hunt County was awarded
$31,596.00 in August 2011
to supplement food and
shelter programs in the
county by the Emergency
Food and Shelter National
Board Program. Due to
circumstances
beyond
the local board’s control
funds were not immediately made available
to the county and have
just been released by
the National EFSP. The
Local Recipient Organizations (LROS) have now
received their funds and
are available to assist individuals and families who
live in towns and cities in
Hunt Count, Texas. LROS
that received funds were:
The Salvation Army and
Women In Need both
located in Greenville and
Community Seeds located
in Lone Oak.
EFSP
funds can help with a
utility bill for electric, gas
or propane, and rent or
mortgage. Unfortunately
EFSP funds have not been
approved for use with the
Empower pre-pay electric
program. To qualify for assistance you must provide
verification that you live in
Hunt County and you must
not have received assistance through EFSP within
the past year. To apply
for assistance pick up an
application at one of the
agencies listed. Contact
the Salvation Army at
