Hunt County Children’s Advocacy Center and
the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA)
for Hunt County are joining efforts to spotlight child
abuse prevention during April, National Child Abuse
Prevention Month. Wear blue on Friday to show
your support of child abuse prevention.
Other things you can do are: Display blue ribbons, signs or banners on your indoor/outdoor signs
with the message “No Excuse for Child Abuse”.
Want a blue ribbon painted on your office or business window to show your support? Call the CAC
at 903-454-9999. Post photos of everyone in your
office or organization wearing a blue shirt on April
10th. Post the group photos on the Child Advocacy
Center and CASA for Hunt County Facebook pages.
Come out for the pinwheel and flag display that
symbolizes the number of child abuse cases in Hunt
County at 4:30 pm on Thursday, April 9th.
FACTS: 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused before the age of 18. More than 90% of
abusers are people children know, love and trust.

It’s almost time for the 27th Annual DrugFree Greenville WALKathon on May 2.
This year’s WALK will again be a great way for families and teams from schools,
businesses and churches to get serious about prevention while having a whole lot
of fun. The WALK is also DrugFree Greenville’s major fundraiser – we need everyone
to “play the game” by making a donation! Funding for our community prevention
programs depends on you. The game we play is “Walkopoly” and the WALK route is
our game board. You might just cross the tracks of the Reading Railroad or find that
some familiar streets have unfamiliar names (we haven’t ALWAYS had a Boardwalk or
Park Place in Greenville, have we???) Here’s how it works:
• Local sponsors buy Houses, Hotels, Game Pieces & Deed cards with their names on them for the Walkopoly
drug prevention signs displayed before and after the WALK at the intersection of Hwy 34 & I-30.
• Walkers also solicit sponsor donations for the 4-mile walk (this can be a certain amount per mile or a lump sum
donation to DrugFree Greenville). YOUR donations are needed, even if you don’t have a sponsor!
• Be at the WALK Saturday, May 2. Your presence is your personal statement of support.
• Register and turn in donations beginning at 8 am at Farmer’s Market (3 blocks east of the courthouse)
• Warm-up activities pump up the WALK spirit beginning at 8:30 am at Farmer’s Market.

Did you know? Expired coupons work. Coupons can be used on overseas
military bases for up to six months past their expiration date. Military
families benefit. Many military families rely on donated coupons to
help offset the expense of living overseas. You can help! Whether
you’re an avid clipper or someone who throws away Sunday inserts,
any eligible coupons will help. Coupons we can use: Save ‘em whether
they’re active or expired! We’ll send both. Only manufacturer’s coupons
can be used. They can be from the newspaper, dispensers in grocery
stores, tear -pads, and elsewhere, as long as they state “Manufacturer’s
Coupon” on them. The most important coupons our troops need are
for food supplies. Baby supplies are 2nd priority, though common

Civilians who join the military find
their lives change forever upon entering
the service. The armed forces shape a
person, teaching discipline, humility, bravery, and many other life lessons. Joining
the military often means making substantial personal sacrifices, as servicemen
and women are typically called away from
their families and the comforts of home.
Many grateful men and women
want to show their appreciation to those
who risk their lives to defend their country, but they may not always know how.
The following are a number of ways you
can show your appreciation to members
of the military.
Thank a service member. If you
see a person in uniform, thank them
for their service to the country. Use the
person’s title if you can identify rank, or
simply use the respectful terms of “sir or
madam.” Though a simple gesture, a verbal token of gratitude can go a long way
toward brightening a soldier’s day.
Volunteer with a veteran’s association. Volunteering is another way to
show veterans and active service members how much you appreciate the sacrifices they have made. Volunteer at a
veteran’s hospital or help to organize an
event that’s commemorating the efforts of
local veterans and active service members.
Propose an event to honor local
service members. Petition a town council
for a special parade to honor your community’s military personnel, including veterans and active duty members.
Raise funds. Fundraisers are another way to show military members how
much you appreciate their service. Collect
money for a military-based scholarship,
asking a local high school or university to
establish the scholarship in the name of a
local veteran or active duty service member.
Provide a forum in which a serviceman or servicewoman can share his
or her story. Soldiers can offer unique insight on issues that affect civilians, and
the community can benefit from servicemen and women who share their stories.
When hosting a community event, ask a
soldier to be a keynote speaker.
Send gifts to active military.
Make care packages or write cards and
thank you notes to stationed troops. Organizations like the USO, Military-Missions.org or AnySoldier.com can ensure
your packages make their way into the
hands of soldiers.
Help an active duty service
member’s family. Spouses of active duty
military personnel often must handle all
of the chores that come with managing
a household on their own. To show how
much you appreciate a service member’s
efforts, offer to lend a hand around his or
her house. This can make life easier on
a service man or woman’s spouse, and
your companionship may provide a world
of good. You can even go the extra mile
by organizing a military spouse appreciation night at a nearby church or recreation
hall. Offer free babysitting and provide refreshments and entertainment.
Publicly display your patriotism.
Active duty service members and veterans joined the military to defend our way
of life, and you can show pride for your
country and appreciation for their efforts
by hanging a flag outside of your home.
Pick up the tab. Surprise a person in uniform by paying for his or her
meal at a restaurant. It’s a simple gesture,
but it shows how much you appreciate
that service member’s sacrifice.
Gestures that show military personnel how much you appreciate them
need not be lavish. Any and all expressions of gratitude can make a world of difference.
