I will be in the gathering space after all Masses. Stop by and fill out a form/make a payment. Forms are available online at www.stmarysl.org. . You can also print a form online, pick one up at one of the church entrances or stop in/call the parish office. Classes are on Wednesdays from 4:30-5:30. Our 1st class will be on Sept 16 (this one is a parent/child class) and will begin in the church. Time is winding down. Please register your child by Sunday 9/11 in order to avoid the $20 late fee. Eight reasons why you may want to be a catechist: You are a Catholic You love your faith You enjoy being with children, youth, adults You love meeting new people You would like to contribute to the parish You want to share your faith with others You want to learn more about your faith You feel unqualified. So were the prophets, apostles and saints. Is God calling you to be a catechist? Call Wendi Kujawski at 616-842-2840 to learn more about becoming a catechist, walking supervisor, or teen helper. Training and support are provided. Vacation Bible School: We have an artificial tree, a wooden coat rack and an LED lantern that people allowed us to borrow. Please contact me so that we can arrange to get these items back to you (sorry, the name tags were removed so I’m not sure who lent them to us). Back to School Check List – Welcome Back! The class supply lists are out. The stores are stocked. The sales are on. Let’s not forget your children’s “faith supplies” list as well. BIBLE: Have an age appropriate Catholic Bible in your home (in the open) and read it with your child. PRAYERS: Say morning, meal and bedtime prayers as a family. Bless them as they lie down. Hail Mary, Glory Be, Our Father are great starters. STEWARDSHIP BOX: Set up a box where you put things for others – clothing, canned food, money, etc. MASS: If you make weekly Mass a priority, it will become a priority for your children. There is a Catholic Mass in nearly every city – so when the team travels, you can still find a Mass. What a wonderful way to see how all Catholic Masses use the same words and actions. As we unofficially say goodbye to summer, many of us are taking a rest from our labors and getting ready to get back into the swing of a busier season. This Wednesday evening, I will resume the sacrament of reconciliation from 5:30-6 in the church, and the evening meetings are starting up again. School began at St. Mary’s this past Tuesday, and it was such a joy to greet all of the smiling faces of our children as they returned to the classroom. I know they are all really looking forward to the completion of the new building and the air conditioning it will bring with it. I also wanted to put in a plug for our school with all of the parents of elementary and middle school aged children. It is not too late to register for this school year. The cost is very reasonable and financial aid is still available. This is an exciting time for our school, and we want to have as many children join us as possible! Right now our parish is blessed to have Lance Walters with us as a permanent deacon intern. Lance began preparing to become a Catholic deacon many years ago, before the program was put on hold. Now, he and two other gentlemen are going through a several month parish internship experience in preparation to hopefully be ordained by Bishop Walkowiak next year. Since he is not ordained yet, there are some limitations regarding what he is able to do, but the hope is that he can become involved in the life of the parish and gain valuable ministerial experience. Lance and his wife Lynn are members of St. Patrick-St. Anthony, and their youngest child attended St. Mary’s School, so they are both familiar with our parish. Please welcome Lance and pray for his formation and discernment. I will ask him to share some words in next week’s bulletin. Last week someone brought to my attention the fact that many people were not genuflecting when they walked past the Tabernacle in our side chapel. Actually, the bigger concern was that they were walking right by without so much as pausing or realizing it was there! While the Tabernacle is not in the center of the church, and so it isn’t required to genuflect when entering the pews before Mass, it is still proper to genuflect whenever we walk past the Tabernacle as a sign of acknowledgement of the presence of Jesus and reverence for Him. If you are unable to genuflect due to age or health problems, then a profound bow would be appropriate. While Jesus is present to us in many ways as we gather in the church building, He is especially present in the Eucharistic species, and we should all strive to show Him the proper reverence and respect whenever we pass by Him. I would just like to encourage everyone to remember that every time we enter into the church building God is there in our midst and we should behave accordingly. If Jesus were standing there in the flesh I would think that we wouldn’t completely ignore Him when we walked by the chapel, so we need to be just as aware that His Body is present in the Tabernacle as we walk by. Remember that our actions reinforce our belief! I hope and pray that everyone has a safe, restful, and joyful Labor Day Weekend and that God blesses you and those you love! Fr. Dave Communion to the Sick and Homebound - If you are unable to attend Mass on a temporary or long-term basis, contact Barb in the parish office at 616-842-1702 or [email protected]. Before we accept a commitment such as marriage or parenting, we must plan carefully like the king in today’s gospel. These are serious commitments which demand complete self-giving and are not for the faint hearted or selfish. Every Life is Worth Living! This ministry promotes the sacredness and inherent dignity of all human life from conception to natural death. We Must See Every Human Being As believers who recognize each human life as the gift of an infinitely loving God, we insist that every human being, however small or seemingly insignificant, matters to God--hence everyone, no matter how weak or small, is of concern to us.
