A Guide to Western North Carolina
and the Great Smoky Mountains
he Great Smokies region of North
Carolina is a destination like no other
place in this country. From the deep
wilderness and high elevations of the Great
Smoky Mountains National Park to the vibrant,
culturally rich small towns, visitors have been
flocking here for decades to sample its treasures.
T
Carolina has most of the highest-elevation
mountains in the eastern United States. Including
the Great Smokies Mountain National Park,
there are 19 mountains in the region that are over
6,000 feet high, part of a rugged forestland
where one can still get away from it all.
The Smoky Mountain Host Visitor Guide is
your handbook for charting your personal
adventure here in North Carolina’s seven
southwestern counties. Whether that’s fishing in
some of the most pristine waters in the East or
hiking to the top of a mountain with your
children, we’ll help you get there.
The history of the Smokies helps us
understand why it is such a unique location. The
ancestors of the Cherokee Indians who remain
on the Qualla Boundary had many villages along
the rivers and in the mountain valleys, and there
are remnant ceremonial mounds still visible. By
visiting Cherokee, one can learn the detailed
history of the tribe, see living re-enactments of
village life and shop for artworks produced by
authentic Cherokee artists.
The migration of the Scotch-Irish and others
into the Smokies in the late 1700s brought new
towns and villages, most built near where the
old Cherokee villages existed. These pioneers
were an independent, self-reliant bunch that
lived in relative isolation from much of America
until well into the 20th century. That isolation
led to ingenuity, and the settlers’ skills at
creating homes, furniture, pottery, quilts,
musical instruments and more put a unique
stamp on the region’s identity.
In addition to the national park, the region is
home to the Nantahala and Pisgah National
Forests, two of the most visited national forests
in the country. Toss in the land along the Blue
Ridge Parkway, and what you have is the largest
concentration of wilderness in the Eastern
United States.
Many early visitors to the region were drawn
here by the pristine waterways that snake
through the mountains. The rivers and streams
are home to some of the best trout fishing in the
world, and nowadays there are several fly fishing
trails and maps that lead anglers to both stocked
streams and to those backcountry waterways
where wily natives thrive.
The music of the Smokies remains one of its
most unique traditions. Researchers who came
and recorded mountain balladeers found a
distinct connection to songs and melodies dating
back to ancient Scotland and Ireland, and even
discovered many words that had long changed
meaning or been lost to the English language.
After dams were built in the 1930s and 1940s
to help the war effort and send electricity
throughout the region, a whitewater rafting
industry developed. Today, that industry is
raging and there are many businesses that will
help you enjoy a rafting adventure on one of the
many picturesque rivers in the Smokies.
Many early visitors to this region came to
escape the heat and congestion of eastern
metropolitan areas. Others came to find
adventure in the mountain wilderness that was
disappearing in other parts of the country.
So, welcome to the North Carolina Smokies.
However you choose to enjoy it, you are always
welcome to visit our backyard to experience
outdoor adventure, unique mountain heritage,
natural beauty and the southern hospitality that
flows so freely here.

estern North Carolina’s Smokies region is one of the country’s
best-known wilderness areas, but it’s also a region of vibrant
yet quaint downtowns with many of the diversions travelers
seek — great restaurants, breweries, unique shopping opportunities, and
galleries with all kinds of handcrafted works of art.

Craft beer brims in WNC
The growth of the craft beer industry has helped Asheville earn the title
“Beer City USA” for several years running. The explosion of craft breweries
is not just an Asheville phenomenon, however, but one happening all over
the Smokies. Craft breweries are now operating in Andrews, Bryson City,
Cashiers, Franklin, Highlands, Sylva, and Waynesville, with more opening
all the time. Travelers could spend several days exploring the small
towns in the Smokies and their unique breweries. The first to open in the
region, Heinzelmannchen in downtown Sylva, offers up several fine
German style beers and has a tasting room in its brewery. One of the
newest is downtown Franklin’s Lazy Hiker Brewing, whose name pays
homage to the many Appalachian Trail hikers and other outdoor
enthusiasts who pass through the town every year. www.avlbrewers.com

Mountain Center for the Performing Arts, where
acclaimed national music and theatre acts take
the stage throughout the year. Want some fresh

launch the orange squash high into the southern
Appalachian sky. Of the many points of interest in
Brasstown, the centerpiece is the John C.
Campbell Folk School, which offers art classes,
workshops, demonstrations and live music
performances.

Into the wild
Great Smoky Mountains
National Park
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park
straddling North Carolina and Tennessee has
more species — plant, animal and insect — than
anywhere else in the world, rivaling even the
rainforests for biological diversity.
The park has more than 100 species of trees
and 4,000 species of plants. Some people say if
you throw a rock and then trace its path, you’re
likely to walk by at least 30 different kinds of trees.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
encompasses over one-half million acres, making it
the largest national park in the East. An auto tour
of the park offers panoramic views, tumbling
mountain streams, weathered historic buildings
and uninterrupted forest stretching to the
horizon. Or get outside on the more than 900
miles of maintained trails in the park.
The North Carolina side of the park is
considered by locals the more pristine, tranquil,
natural park experience. It is less heavily used and
more off the beaten path, and all of the
communities on the park’s east side welcome
visitors with open arms.
12
Nantahala National Forest
Legend has it that sunlight can only reach the
floors of the rich cove forests or touch the ribbons
of water that course through the gorges of the wild
and scenic Nantahala Forest at noon when the sun
is directly overhead. Created in 1920, Nantahala is
the largest of the four national forests in North
Carolina, covering just over half-a-million acres.
The Nantahala National Forest is renowned
for whitewater, mountain biking and camping and
hiking. The Appalachian Trail, Bartram’s Trail and
the Mountains-to-the-Sea Trail all meander
through the forest. With more than 600 miles of
trails there are plenty of dayhikes and short strolls.
There are more than 27,000 acres of
designated wilderness in the Nantahala. These
include Ellicott Rock, Joyce Kilmer/Slickrock and
the Southern Nantahala Wilderness. The Joyce
Kilmer Memorial Forest and the Joyce
Kilmer/Slickrock Wilderness Area have some of
the most beautiful old growth forests in the east. It
was set aside in 1936 in order of its namesake
poet and author of “Trees” who was killed in
action in France during World War I.

part of George Vanderbilt’s private estate.
The area west of Vanderbilt’s Asheville
Biltmore Estate was sold to the
federal government after his
death in 1914. These acres
became the first tracts of the
now half-million-acre Pisgah
National Forest.
Pisgah is home to the
Shining Rock Wilderness
Area, Max Patch, the Harmon
Den Bear Preserve, The Cradle of
Forestry and Sliding Rock.
Vanderbilt’s forests were the
birthplace of modern forestry in
this country. A glimpse of that
birth is available at the forest’s
6,500-acre National Historic Site at
The Cradle of Forestry. Let the Cradle rock you
back to the turn of the 20th century. Stroll along
the mile-long Biltmore Campus Trail and talk to
the town blacksmith or other crafters while they
ply their trades. Visit the “campus” of the first
forestry school in America begun in 1898 by Carl
Schenk at the behest of Vanderbilt and take a
peek inside the Biltmore Forest School.

The folkways of Appalachia
The Mountain Farm Museum is at the
Oconaluftee Visitor Center at the entrance to
the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on
U.S. 441 just outside of Cherokee. The living
museum preserves the legacy of the hardy
settlers who lived on the land that would
become the national park. Different events throughout the year include hearth
cooking, apple butter and apple cider making, blacksmithing, lye soap making and
more. A half-mile north of the museum is Mingus Mill, a historic grist mill built in
1886 that uses a water-powered turbine instead of a waterwheel to power all of its
machinery. Visitors can purchase corn meal and other mill-related items.

Blueway
Trails
OUTDOOR ADVENTURE
our rivers — Little Tennessee, Nantahala, Oconaluftee and
Tuckasegee — flow through the N.C. Smokies and into Fontana Lake at
the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains, creating a spectacular
“Blueways Trail” throughout the region. Those rivers and their watersheds
encompass the Nantahala National Forest, the Great Smoky Mountains
National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway, which create the infrastructure for
the largest and one of the most visited outdoor recreation areas in the
Southeastern United States. All of these rivers offer fishing, canoeing,
kayaking, tubing, and a host of recreational opportunities. Visit
www.visitsmokies.org/smoky-mountain-blueways.html for more information.
F
The Oconaluftee, considered “sacred waters” by
the Cherokee, and known as the “Luftee,” is a
beautiful, freestone river that drops 2,000 feet
over 10 miles and flows through Cherokee before
joining the Little Tennessee on the way to Lake
Fontana. Wading, tubing and canoeing are all
popular here. However, the Luftee is most famous
for its abundant healthy Rainbow, Brook and
Brown Trout. In fact, it holds the North Carolina
Record Brown Trout weighing in at 15.9 pounds.
The Nantahala offers river rafting and kayaking
through family-friendly rapids and is a popular
spot for the amateur as well as the Olympic
paddler. It features eight miles of Class II rapids
before splashing through the exciting Class III
whitewater of Nantahala Falls. This is one of
America’s most popular whitewater runs. It is also
recognized as one of the area’s premier trout
streams. So good in fact, that Trout Unlimited
included it on their list of the Top 100 Trout
Streams in the U.S.
The Little Tennessee and its immediate
watershed comprise one of the richest
archaeological areas in the Southeastern U.S.
Known to the avid fisherman for its small mouth
bass, this river is a popular spot for canoeing,
fishing and floating. Travelers and locals alike
enjoy the town of Franklin’s Little Tennessee
Greenway as it winds along the river.
The Tuckasegee, known as the “Tuck,” originates
In Jackson County and runs through Cullowhee,
Webster, Dillsboro and Bryson City on its way to
Fontana Lake. A float trip on the Tuck is an
exhilarating way to experience fly fishing in the
Southern Appalachians, and the river is so popular
for fishing the Jackson County Chamber of
Commerce has produced its own fly fishing map
for the Tuck. The river has areas that are as wide as
many western rivers, offering plenty of room for
back casting. The Tuck is also a popular river for
tubing, floating, canoeing, rafting and kayaking.
19
Gone Fishing
t’s often said that variety is the
spice of life, and if that’s so,
then fishing in the Smoky
Mountains is extra spicy. Fishing
in mountain waters provides
diverse opportunities for anglers
of all ages and experience levels.
Explore lakes, creeks and rivers
that are nationally recognized for
a native and stocked trout.
Nonresident and resident fishing
permits can be purchased at
several locations online. Special
tribal fishing permits can be
acquired if you want to visit the
waterways on the Cherokee
Reservation, which recently
hosted the national fly fishing
championships. Jackson County
has a fly fishing trail that was the
first of its kind in the country, and
now Swain County also has one.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE
Mountain Biking
his is one of the fastest
growing recreational
activities in the Smokies, one
easily witnessed by all the vehicles
with mountain bikes strapped to the
back or top. Pretty straightforward
as to why so may partake of this
sport — the Smokies contain some of
the best bike trails anywhere. Here
are the popular spots:
T
Tsali Recreation Area
This is the granddaddy of Western North
Carolina mountain biking, boasting 40 miles of
trails on four loops. Rated as one of top 10 places
to ride in the U.S. Fast, hard-packed singletrack,
and you can’t go wrong with any of the loops.
Jackrabbit Mountain
Located next to the huge Jackrabbit Campground
at Lake Chatuge, this 14-mile trail system is
gaining popularity fast. Mostly flat with rolling
dips and berms and just a few technical areas.
At Lake Chatuge get on N.C. 175, turn onto Jackrabbit
Road, signed parking area on left.
Western Carolina University Trail
Recently opened 6.6 miles of singletrack across
the street from main WCU campus in Cullowhee.
Challenging but relatively short.
The trail system has two trailheads. One is located near the
softball field and picnic area on WCU main campus, east of
N.C. 107. Trail users then travel through the pedestrian
tunnel under 107 and access the trail on NCCAT property.
The second trailhead is located at the parking lot of the
Health and Human Sciences building.
Off N.C. 28 past Bryson City, or if coming from Robbinsville
N.C. 143 until you reach N.C. 28, go east. Entrance on
north side of N.C. 28, well-marked.
The Santeetlah Lake Trail
A 15-mile trail open to mountain bikes, horses,
and hikers. The trail follows a number of open
and gated Forest Service roads with a short
portion of single-track. Large sections of the trail
hug the shoreline of Lake Santeetlah offering
beautiful mountain lake views.
The primary trailhead is located at the intersection
of N.C. 143 (N.C. 1127) and Snowbird Road
Fontana Village Trails
The individual trails vary widely in their
width, steepness, and technical difficulty.
Describing one distinct route here
is impossible because this network
of trails crisscrosses all around the
village and totals about 20 miles.
Some bike shops offer rentals for
those who didn’t bring their bike:
• Nantahala Outdoor Center, Wesser

Jump Right In
ids love the mountains and
the great outdoors, and
there’s no shortage of fun to
be had in the Smokies. All it takes is
a cool clear creek, perhaps a
swimming hole, or just a walk in the
woods to get the fun going. Here’s a
short list of activities that kids are
sure to enjoy:
K
Great Smoky Mountain Railroad
This scenic excursion railroad has a variety of
trips departing from its depot in historic Bryson

cars or partake in gourmet meals in the dining car.
Specialty trains including Peanuts excursions and
The Polar Express are favorites for children. Adults
will enjoy the Moonshine Express. www.gsmr.com
Tubing
One of summer’s sweetest pleasures in the
Smokies is getting in the cool mountain waters
while on a tube. There are many great spots, but
among the most popular are at Deep Creek
outside Bryson City, in the Oconaluftee River in
Cherokee, and in the Tuckasegee River at several
spots from Cullowhee to Dillsboro. All three rivers
have companies who will outfit you with a tube.
Gem Mining
Western North
Carolina and in
particular Macon
County have a rich history of gem mining,
and several world-record semiprecious stones have been
discovered in the region. Today, many gem mines in the region offer a wonderful
experience as adults and children sift through locally-mined soil to try and uncover
valuable stones. Gold City Gem Mines, Franklin; Jackson Hole Gem Mines,
Highlands; Mason’s Ruby and Sapphire Mine, Franklin; Rose Creek Mine,
Franklin; Primitive Outback, Otto; Nantahala Gem Mining, Bryson City; and

Rafting
Whitewater rafting on our tamer
rivers is a great adventure for small
children. The Tuckasegee River and
the Little Tennessee River are perfect
places to get children on the water. Some of the
companies providing these river trips include Great
Smoky Mountains Fish Camp and Safaris, Franklin;
Smoky Mountain River Adventures, Whittier;
Tuckasegee Outfitters, Whittier. For teens and
adults, more exciting rafting can be experienced
with companies such as Brookside, Carolina
Outfitters, the Nantahala Outdoor Company,
Rolling Thunder and Wildwater.
Horseback riding
Seeing the mountains from the back of a horse is
an exhilarating experience. Whether it’s an all-day
ride with a picnic or a shorter excursion, children of
all ages will enjoy a guided trip with one of the many
operating stables in the Smokies. Arrowmont Stables
& Cabins, Cataloochee Ranch, Chunky Gal Stables,
Fontana Village Resort, Nantahala Village Resort,
Smokemont Stables and Walnut Hollow Ranch.
Wildlife viewing
A few years ago an elk herd was re-introduced
into the Cataloochee Valley area of the Great
Smoky Mountains
National Park. The
herd is thriving and is
expanding to other
areas within the park.
It is almost a sure
thing that you’ll see
elk if you drive into
the valley near sunrise
and sunset. But don’t
approach the elk, as
they are dangerous and wildlife managers don’t
want them to lose their fear of humans. This an
adventure that children and adults will enjoy.

fishing in the rivers and streams that abound in the area. Lake Nantahala is
located at an elevation of 3,200 feet making it the second highest lake east of

DISCOVER THE FUN OF SEEING THE WORLD
THROUGH CHEROKEE EYES
VisitCherokeeNC.com • 800.438.1601
It might happen on a mud-spattering romp through the nearby Great Smoky
Mountains. Or while reeling in a monster trout from our 30 miles of privately stocked
freestone streams. Maybe while you’re hearing the creation legend in the Museum of
the Cherokee Indian. You’re having fun in Cherokee, relaxing, and suddenly you’re a
little more in tune with the natural world. With just one visit, you can’t help but look
at things a little differently. And you’ll certainly have more fun.
How will Cherokee affect you? Discover at VisitCherokeeNC.com
