Fall/Winter 2012 - Humber River Hospital Foundation
H u m b e r R i v e r R e g i o n a l H o s p i ta l F o u n d at i o n NEWSLETTER Grand Opening The Murphy & Helen Hull Robotics Centre Centre made possible by $10 million gift from the late Marian (Murphy) Hull & Mrs. Helen Hull On June 5, 2012, Mrs. Helen Hull, joined by family and friends, celebrated the opening of the new Murphy and Helen Hull Robotics Centre at Humber River Regional Hospital. The Centre was made possible thanks to an amazing $10 million gift from Mrs. Hull and her late husband Marian (Murphy) Hull. “Murphy made such an impact over his lifetime. Together, Helen and Murphy Hull have made a positive and lasting contribution to our community in a manner that only a very small few ever have,” explains Eddy Battiston, Chair of the Board, Humber River Regional Hospital Foundation. “Their support of our hospital over the years, and now our new Robotics Centre, has, and will continue to, save lives, and change others for the better. There is no stronger legacy a citizen can bestow on their community.” The Centre features a da Vinci Surgical Robot with Skills Simulator. With advanced 3D HD visualization; dexterity and range of motion greater than even the human hand; and motion technology which preserves natural eye-hand-instrument alignment, the da Vinci robot provides unparalleled precision, dexterity and control that enable a minimally invasive approach to many complex surgical procedures. Mr. Hull was one of Humber River Regional Hospital’s most dedicated community champions. In a letter to the hospital dated just before Mr. Hull’s passing, Mr. and Mrs. Hull explained that the gift was “in appreciation of the wonderful care provided by your fine hospital.” According to Dr. Rueben Devlin, President and CEO of Humber River Regional Hospital, the benefits of the Hull family’s gift are far-reaching. “Murphy’s commitment to our hospital was unwavering, even in his final days. Now, thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Hull’s generosity, our hospital has the very latest in robotic surgery technology, enabling our hospital to provide even more minimally invasive surgery options for patients,” states Dr. Devlin. “For some it will mean more precise, safer care, with shorter healing times and less pain throughout. Everyone at Humber is extremely grateful for Murphy and Helen’s financial support and for their faith in our hospital.” F ALL | W IN T E R 2 0 1 2 @ humber Jack Kay – Chair, Campaign, Humber River Regional Hospital CEO, Apotex Inc. Dear friends, The best investment you can make is in your health. Every time I drive past the new hospital’s construction site and observe its impressive progress, my excitement for this monumental project grows. I am honoured to be part of a development that is going to transform healthcare – so much so that I have personally pledged $1 million through The Kay Family Foundation, as well as another $1 million in planned giving. The new Humber River Regional Hospital’s digital initiative will facilitate a patient-centered care model that will augment our exceptional programs and services and enable physicians to deliver exemplary healthcare to our community in our community. Building North America’s first fully digital hospital is no small task. Community leaders like our financial institutions understand that our innovative new hospital will function as a model for the future of healthcare. They have lent their significant support to a hospital that will stake out new territory in medical technologies to promote cost and energy savings, sustainable healthcare, and the most efficient hospital on the continent. We continue to receive letters of thanks and encouragement from our individual donors. We are particularly touched by individuals who give so selflessly of their hard earned money to invest in a hospital that will care for their family and loved ones. I want to take this opportunity to thank those who have already lent their support. But we can’t stop now. Every donation helps. Together, we will build a hospital that is needed in our community. No one is more aware of this need than our board of directors, volunteers, and hospital staff. We are on a mission to build a hospital that will provide our community the very best healthcare close to home. We continue to work and fundraise to ensure that the new Humber River Regional Hospital meets and exceeds the expectations of a community that has inspired our visionary new facility. Sincerely, IC Savings pledges $1,000,000 for New Humber River Regional Hospital Italian Canadian Savings & Credit Union (IC Savings) announced a pledge of $1 million over the next 10 years towards building the new, state-of-the-art Humber River Regional Hospital under construction at Keele St. and Hwy 401. The Emergency Triage Waiting Area in the new hospital will be named for IC Savings in recognition of this gift. “This pledge to Humber River Regional Hospital is a reflection of our commitment to our members, neighbourhoods and communities,” says Fausto Gaudio, President and CEO of IC Savings. “We set out to create a community financial institution, an organization that could make a real difference, not only in members’ lives directly, but in the community at large.” IC Savings has a mandate of community and neighbourhood involvement; in 2011 IC Savings gave approximately 10% of profits in charitable donations in conjunction with the IC Savings Foundation and in sponsorships to community groups. “Our hospital has been enriched beyond measure by the contributions of our Italian-Canadian community over the generations,” notes HRRH President & CEO Rueben Devlin. “Today’s pledge by IC Savings honours that history, and speaks to their own depth of commitment to continuing that great tradition. We are grateful to Mr. Gaudio and everyone at IC Savings for this amazing show of support for our redevelopment project.” The new hospital will be a place where patients are empowered to participate in all aspects of their care. In partnership with their team of care providers, patients and families will take advantage of the technologies available in North America’s first fully digital hospital to enhance the personal interactions that are the basis of great hospital care. “We applaud IC Savings for their generosity, for their leadership and for their early commitment to our $225 million campaign,” said Jack Kay, Campaign Chairman, Humber River Regional Hospital Foundation. “This gift is a tremendous demonstration of their belief in our shared vision to bring accessible, world class healthcare to this community. We feel privileged that Mr. Gaudio will continue to champion our cause as a new member of our Campaign Cabinet.” + Construction Update To check up on our construction progress, view our web cam of the new campus at www.hrrh.ca As we look to 2015, we will continue to push ahead, placing our patients at the centre of all we do. With so much activity at Keele Street and Highway 401, it’s hard to miss our brand new hospital going up, one floor at a time, right before our eyes. The site of our new home is always bustling with activity. On Tuesday, September 11, we reached another milestone in the history of Humber River Regional Hospital by holding our Hospital Board meeting – for the first time – on our new hospital site; and welcoming our Board Members on the grounds of what will be a new and innovative model of patient care for our community and beyond. Before the meeting, in collaboration with Plenary Healthcare Partnerships, we engaged Members in a mandatory site safety orientation and outfitted them in the necessary personal protective equipment for a tour around the construction site. Members commented on the remarkable progress of the work and expressed their excitement for the promise of ‘what’s to come.’ While there is still a lot of work ahead, there are many exciting stages and developments in our new hospital project that we are looking forward to sharing with all of you. 3 + Humber Family Support Giving from the Inside Out When we work together, there are no limits to what we can achieve. The staff, physicians and volunteers of Humber are proving this every day – and even more so in the recent months with the launch of the Humber Family Campaign. Just like the family we are, when asked, the Humber Family came together in support of our exciting new hospital and of the patients and community that will benefit from the new state-of-the-art hospital we are building together. The Humber Family Campaign was launched on May 14th and staff, volunteers and physicians were engaged in the campaign through events, activities and contests. From dessert parties and BBQ’s, to trivia contests and bake sales, the Family Campaign was successful in generating significant financial and volunteer support from those closest to Humber. When those that know an organization inside-out support it in such a significant way, it clearly shows the community that this cause is an important one. Not only are the Humber Family members delivering the best care possible, they are going above and beyond to support the community. When you are visiting any of the Humber sites, have a look for staff, volunteers and physicians wearing their “I Support Humber” buttons and thank them for supporting our community in so many ways. This is just the beginning of our plans to engage the Humber community. During the coming years we will continue to work to get everyone involved in building this hospital. We thank the Humber family donors for taking the first important steps and setting such a remarkable standard of giving! To see a full list of supporters, please see the Donor List at the back of this newsletter. For more information on the Humber Family Campaign or to make a gift, please visit www.hrrh-foundation.ca In My Own Words Why I Give to Humber by Alexandra Christofides Certified Child Life Specialist, Registered Early Childhood Educator I have been a staff at Humber River Regional Hospital for 14 years as a Child Life Specialist under the Women’s & Children’s Health Care Program-Child Life Services. I also worked in a daycare and at a children’s developmental centre in this community for 6 years – in total, I have worked in this community 20 years with children and families. My heart is in this community and although I have no children of my own, I feel as though I have mothered thousands of children and grandmothered thousands more parents in this community. I have seen many children that I have toilet trained years ago, grow up and come to Humber River Regional Hospital having their own children….boy I feel old, but what a special reunion – it feels like family! I like to support my family and that is why I donate to the Humber River Regional Hospital Family Campaign, because to me, the Humber River community is family. I am a caring, dedicated professional and have a passion for working with infants, children, teens and their families in hospital and have seen first hand over the years what a huge difference sponsorship and donations can make for an infant, child, teen, parent or family member in hospital. With staff and community donations we have been able to: • Send a group of children that were chronically ill, including a little girl who was palliative, to participate in “Dreams Take Flight” and visit Disney World for the first time • Provide TV’s with cable in all children’s rooms • Create and furnish a Family Lounge & Playroom • Purchase new medical equipment, lounge sleeping pull out cots for parents on paediatrics, two beautiful therapeutic fish tanks, portable laptop computers with internet for kids, teens, parents to use, portable Wii’s with games & DVD players with movies, computers for kids in the playroom, child friendly decals to decorate the units with, treatment room with TV/DVD and distractions toys • Develop a program for parents to be with their child to provide comfort & support during anaesthesia • Provide colouring books, crayons, toys… and lots, lots more Staff and community donations are so important to help us with the building of our new hospital and to be able to continue to provide all of these things and much more to ensure that all of our patients, including children and their parents, have the most comfortable, positive hospital experience that we could possibly give them. This is our obligation to our community and I encourage you to also donate with your heart to help us make this new hospital the best it can be for our family community! SPOTLIGHT TARIC Islamic Centre We will be using the health facilities so we should contribute whatever we can to see its completion. TARIC is an integral part of the community and we are ready to step forward and show our support.” Thank you TARIC for leading the way and showing Toronto the great things that can happen when a hospital shares a vision with its community. Securing the Future of H R RH All it takes is one. One leader to step up, get behind a cause and inspire others to do the same. That’s why HRRH Foundation is so pleased to announce our partnership with TARIC Islamic Centre – an organization that has taken a leadership role in the community, championing Humber’s cause and motivating others to do the same. Through the efforts of TARIC, numerous other community groups have joined Humber’s cause, forming “Muslim Friends of Humber” – a collective that will raise a total of $250,000 over 5 years to help build and equip the new Humber River Regional Hospital. “Humber is important to TARIC because we are part of the community, part of the Humber region and therefore we feel it incumbent on us to help build a centre we will all be benefiting from,” states Haroon Salamat, Chairman for the TARIC Islamic Centre. Humber’s Church Street site is not more than two kilometers away from TARIC Islamic Centre, located at Jane Street and Beverley Hills Drive. The new Humber will be a facility that most of the congregation will use for medical attention, and the members are convinced that the quality of care will be excellent. “TARIC is the first community group to have signed on as a partner in this bold new venture to build a new acute care hospital, focused on patient-centered care and efficiency. The vision is to create a lean, green and digital hospital that will enhance all aspects of quality care delivery, increasing efficiency, accuracy and safety,” explains Salamat. “Other Muslim communities have led the way in collaborating with their local hospitals in providing better facilities. We too can and must come on board to assist our hospital in reaching its goal of $225 million if we want to have topnotch health care provided by the most qualified professionals. Simple and Tax Effective Ways to Donate The Fall season is in full swing and the end of the year is quickly approaching. During this time many people turn their attention to income tax and estate planning. Many of HHRH’s supporters donate during this time using simple and tax effective methods. Bequest in Will – You may be surprised how easy it is to make a provision for HRRH Foundation in your estate plans and the benefits your gift can have. Often legacy gifts can be more substantial that any donation made during one’s lifetime, while also providing an excellent way to reduce taxes owed on your estate. If you are considering making a legacy gift to HRRH, let us help. We can ensure the process is as straightforward as possible and that your wishes are honoured. Gifts of Securities – Recent changes to the tax laws have made it more attractive for donors to make a gift through the donation of appreciated securities, mutual funds, bonds or options because you are 100% exempt from paying capital gains tax. The charitable tax receipt will also help to offset taxes payable on other income. A direct donation of securities to HRRH Foundation is now one of the most effective way of saving taxes while also supporting our hospital. The process is easy and should include consultation with your financial or estate planning advisor. To discuss any one of the above options or for more information, please contact: Rosanna Petricca, CFRE at 416-249-8111 ext: 3984 or via email at [email protected]. 5 + 2 1 3 community Humber River Events & Gifts 1 Giorgio D. Wine Tastings Tony and Pasquale Sampogna from Giorgio D. Ristorante have been long-time supporters of Humber and this past year they have played host to a number of exclusive wine pairing events that have featured wines and winemakers from around the globe, raising almost $3,000 for the new hospital. Ricasoli Thanks to a partnership that began in September 2011, a generous donation in the amount of $6,000 was presented the Foundation in February from the Ricasoli Winery in Tuscany. The funds were raised through the sale of a special, limited edition bottle of Rocca Guicciarda Chianti Classico Riserva 2007(Barone Ricasoli), which was sold in LCBO – Vintages last October. One dollar from every bottle sold (6,000 bottles were available) was generously donated to the new hospital. Special thanks to Frank Montanaro from Dionysus Wines & Spirits and Michel Beauregard, National Brand Manager, Ricasoli for facilitating this wonderful initiative! Rogers & Company On February 22, 2012, 70 wine aficionados gathered at Giorgio D. Ristorante for an exquisite evening of food and drink featuring iconic Californian wines and hosted in partnership with Rogers & Company. Board members from both the Hospital and the Foundation attended, and Barb Collins, COO, HRRH, shared with the crowd the latest updates on the new hospital construction. Bertani In May, the iconic winery Bertani from Verona,Italy was featured. Bertani is famous for having historic vintage Amarone from the early 1930’s to present. Winemaker Cristian Ridolfi and export manager Stefano Mangiarotti attended from the winery. Special thanks to board members Eric Zoebelein and Carmen Principato for attending and to Dr. Rueben Devlin, President and CEO, HRRH, for sharing news on the new hospital with the 70 guests in attendance. 2 Shopper’s Tree of Life Special thanks to Jay Khetia, lead Shoppers Drug Mart associate in our district, who visited Humber River Regional Hospital in February to present us with a $13,090 donation. The funds were raised through the annual Tree of Life Campaign – a nationwide initiative in all Shoppers stores. These much needed funds will support Humber’s Women’s Health Program. 3 Grade 4 Students Give Back to Humber On March 23, Foundation staff visited the Grade 4 students at The Associated Hebrew Day School to hear about the school projects they completed about Humber as part of “Project Giveback” – a program founded by Ellen Swartz that encourages school age children to learn more about non-profit organizations and the great work they do in the community. 4 Milestone’s Night On April 24th, HRRH Foundation hosted over 70 people (a sold out crowd) at Milestones - Yorkdale. Guests enjoyed a signature Bellini and a variety of tasty chef’s signature hors d’oeuvres, while mixing and mingling with guests from our local community, including our friends from CIBC and Shoppers Drug Mart, Foundation Board members, and of course many HRRH staff. Milestones Yorkdale was an outstanding partner and provided a first class experience for everyone. We raised over $1,700 all in support of the new hospital project. Special thanks to everyone who attended – plans are underway to make this a repeat event! 4 5 6 5 McDonald’s Helps Humber Kids, One Bite at a Time HRRH staff and physicians joined the staff at three local McDonald’s restaurants on Wednesday, May 2nd for McHappy Day. Toronto Police Officers, from 23 Division and 31 Division, also volunteered their time and did a tremendous job in encouraging customers to make a donation. Lunchtime customers were served by Dr. Rueben Devlin, Heather Hurst, Alex Christofides, Child Life Specialist, and other members of the Foundation and hospital team. A number of hospital front line staff had their lunch there to support the hospital. We are happy to announce that the 2012 McHappy Day raised a grand total of $4,800 – the most successful one to date! All funds raised will go in support of our Pediatrics Department. 6 Royal Canadian Legion Gift The Royal Canadian Legion Club presented the Foundation with a gift of $4,000, from their annual Poppy Fund, in support of the NEW hospital. Staff from the Foundation attended their award ceremony and Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, May 22nd to accept the cheque and thank the over 30 members in attendance. 7 Rotary Club Support Humber River is fortunate to have loyal and supportive friends like the Rotary Club of Toronto Humber. In May, the Club presented the Foundation with a donation in the amount of $2,000 at their annual Sports Celebrity Dinner featuring Bob Weeks of SCORE Golf Magazine. As well, $1,743 was presented from our efforts at the Rotary Club’s annual TV Auction that took place in November last year. The Foundation secured 28 items for the auction and many staff volunteered with the Rotary Club at the auction which aired on Rogers Toronto Channel 10. All of these funds will be directed towards the new hospital. Thank you Rotary! 7 9 8 10 8 Plan Group Golf Tournament Plan Group, the electrical contractors for our new hospital, hosted a third party golf tournament for their staff on June 8th at Nobelton Lakes Golf Club and a second one on July 6th for their clients and vendors, all in support of our NEW hospital. Thank you to everyone who was attended and supported the future of healthcare in our city! 9 Uruguayan Carnaval The Uruguay Club of Toronto hosted their annual Carnival on June 9th, in support of Humber. Approximately 700 guests from the local community attended the event, which took place at Labours’ Union Local 183 Hall, at Keele & Wilson, right next door to the new hospital site. The tournament hosted 288 golfers, including the members of their union as well as the Drywall Union. Together, the golfers and sponsors raised a very generous $34,885.54 for the new Humber. 7 + Humber Goes Hollywood Unforgettable! Grammy legend Natalie Cole helps Humber River Regional Hospital Raise Almost Half a Million Dollars Legendary singer Natalie Cole delivered an unforgettable performance, helping the Humber River Regional Hospital Foundation raise almost $500,000 last evening to support the construction of the NEW Humber River Regional Hospital. The renowned performer wowed over 700 guests with breathtaking renditions of some of the songs that have made her a nine time Grammy Award winner. Other highlights of the evening included the presentation of the first ever Humber River “No Limits” awards: created to recognize special individuals in our community who stand as extraordinary examples of Humber’s vision for the future of its own organization. Mrs. Helen Hull and her husband, the late Mr. Murphy Hull were the first honourees. “For generations the Hull family has given selflessly to their community and to our hospital. Murphy Hull’s contributions to Humber River are inspiring: Director; Chairman; Donor – no aspect of our hospital – his hospital – wanted for his attention,” said HRRH President & CEO, Dr. Rueben Devlin. The Hull family’s $10 Million donation in support of the Hospital’s robotic surgery program was singled out for special recognition. Dr. Roberta Bondar was also honoured for challenging boundaries and pushing the edge of innovation with her work as an accomplished astronaut, physician, scientific researcher, photographer and author – all of which embody the values and ideals of Humber. “Dr. Bondar has shown that when you are passionate in pursuit of your dream, there are no limits to how far you can go. Our hospital aspires to bring that passion to patient care every day, and the Foundation is thrilled to support them in their work,” noted Heather Hurst, HRRH Foundation President & CEO. Proceeds from the Gala will support the Hospital Foundation’s campaign to raise $225 million dollars to equip the NEW Humber River Regional Hospital – North America’s first fully digital hospital. The new hospital will be a place where patients are empowered to participate in all aspects of their care. In partnership with their teams of care providers, patients and families will take advantage of the technologies available to enhance the personal interactions that are the basis of great PeopleCare. Presenting Sponsors: What an AWESOME Day! Our 29th annual AWESOME Invitational Golf Tournament was in full swing August 20th, 2012 at the Eagles Nest Golf and Country Club. Golfers enjoyed an exclusive golf experience – one that is hard to find elsewhere in Toronto. After a gourmet breakfast and warm up on the driving range, golfers set out on their 18-hole adventure. Along the way, foursomes were treated to personalized service by a fore caddy, as well as delicious treats like prosciutto sandwiches, gourmet ice cream and even a porchetta station with all the fixings! Among the celebrations this year, we took a moment to honor the late Dr. William Francis, one of the original founders of our great tournament. We unveiled our new AWESOME trophy, which is fashioned in the shape of the famous pink jacket that Dr. Francis founded, and awarded the first recipient of this prestigious prize – the top golfer for 2012 which is John Ward – congratulations! By the end of the day, $220,000 was raised in support of the NEW Humber River Regional Hospital. The day could not have been possible without the support of our loyal and enthusiastic donors – you make our work possible and for that, the entire community is grateful. Presenting sponsors: SPOTLIGHT CIBC – Support for What Matters W e can’t say it enough Good Luck! Over the past decade, Humber River Regional Hospital Foundation and CIBC have shared a special partnership. After years of working together towards our mutual goal to improve healthcare for our community, we can confidently say that we are more than just partners, we are friends. CIBC is a staunch supporter of our innovative new hospital. Their energetic fundraising efforts have produced funds and so much more. Most recently, CIBC has come on board with our Team Revolution cycling event. Over 60 cyclists will travel to Italy in the October to raise funds and awareness by riding in the Granfondo Italia. Four CIBC employees – Venki Raman, Domenic Reda, Mark Roccatani, and Christopher Piersanti – will cycle this challenging course to raise money for the new hospital. We wish them all the best on their journey through the hills of Modena. Their infectious energy and enthusiasm will be felt in Granfondo Italia 2012, but it is also already being felt right here at home. With participation from over twelve neighbouring branches, CIBC’s barbeques, bake sales, sponsorships, in support of Team Revolution have helped generate buzz and excitement within our community for the new hospital. CIBC is a true community leader and Humber Regional Hospital Foundation is grateful for their contribution to our campaign. Larry Tomei, Senior Vice President, Retail Distribution CIBC and HRRHF Board Member says, “CIBC is committed to improving health care for Canadians. At CIBC we care about what matters – kids, cures and community. We have enjoyed a partnership with Humber River Regional Hospital for several years, through employee volunteerism, and corporate donations to key campaigns. Humber River Regional Hospital provides quality and leading edge care. CIBC and our employees are excited for the New Humber River Regional Hospital, as it will continue to offer the best care for our community.” Thank you, Larry, and CIBC. When the doors to our new hospital open in 2015, you will know that it could not have been possible without you. From the entire Humber family – good luck to each and every member of Team Revolution! All those months of training, sacrifice and fundraising will pay off in spades once you all cross the finish line in the Granfondo Italia on October 13, 2012. And in 2015, when we open the doors to the new Humber River, your efforts will pay off for the entire community to benefit from for generations to come. Even though we can’t be there with you on your amazing journey abroad, please know that every Humber doctor, nurse, patient, volunteer and board member are there with you in spirit – cheering you on, feeling your aches and pains and celebrating that glorious moment when you cross the finish line all in the name of Humber River Regional Hospital.
