St. Norbert Parish is a dynamic community of disciples of Jesus Christ striving to continue His ministries of prayer, love and service. ST. NORBERT CATHOLIC CHURCH | WWW.STNORBERTCHURCH.ORG 2 Stewardship Reflecting on God’s Word Fi eenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Traveling by plane these days calls for careful prepara on. One airline recently posted no ce that if your bag weighs more than fi y pounds, there is an addi onal fee of fi y dollars. Add in the restric ons on carry-on baggage: no liquids more than three ounces, no bags beyond a certain size. It encourages you to travel light. Jesus is issuing his own travel instruc ons to those he chose to work with him. First, he gives them “authority over unclean spirits” (Mark 6:7), a sharing in the authority the Father has given him for the work of spreading the gospel that the reign of evil is over and the reign of God is beginning. Then, Jesus gets prac cal: Take nothing but a walking s ck—to be used in climbing hills, driving off wild animals, or pushing away snakes found on the paths. No food, no sack to hold extra clothing— not even a second tunic—or to carry off anything from the towns you visit, and no money! Permission granted to wear sandals. Finally, when you get to a place, do not look for the most comfortable lodging, take what comes first and be content there. The focus is clear: Stay on message—God’s kingdom is at hand. Repent and believe. And show it in ac on: Deliver the sick and possessed from what burdens them. If people don’t like the message? Move on. Over two thousand years later, Jesus, risen Lord, con nues to call ordinary folk. Back then it was some fishermen, a tax collector, a poli cal ac vist; now it’s workers from every way of life, every profession and job. People raising families, singles, the elderly, anyone willing to confess that God is at work in our world, that evil will not have the last word, and that all crea on finds its deepest meaning in Christ. —James A. And we also want to recognize the wonderful efforts of parishes throughout Southern California that are caring for immigrants and helping them to prepare for relief and a path to ci zenship in the upcoming Immigra on Mass. Next Sunday, July 19, at 4 p.m. (Pre-Gathering at 3 p.m.) Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels 555 W. Temple Avenue, Los Angeles More informa on can be found at: www.lifejus cepeace.org __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Choir Fire My experience with the St. Norbert choir has been so unexpectedly good—it has changed my life. Six years ago, I was working too hard, constantly solving problems, so very busy, leaving little time for or interest in my faith or life enrichment. An ad in the church bulletin caught my attention asking for volunteers for the choir—“no experience, no auditions necessary” was the clincher. From the first day, I was warmly welcomed by the choir director and all those who answered the ad. None of us were “stars;” we simply enjoyed the singing and the fellowship. We have successfully tackled music none of us would have believed we were capable of performing. All worries about how to fit practice into my busy life faded away. I always made it work. Choir became a real focus in my life—my commitment was firmly engrained in my schedule. But the real blessing is having a closer relationship with the Lord—the message in the music and God’s word opened my mind and heart to the liturgy and brought back the faith I had as a child. I am truly blessed to be a part of this wonderful mission. The fourth and final of the canonical Gospels, attributed to John, was written near the turn of the century. As with the other Gospels, the actual identity of the author is unknown, but is thought to be a follower of Jesus’ disciple John the Son of Zebedee and brother of James, and based on the testimony of that John. The author claims that his testimony is that of an eye-witness, and the testimony is true. He does not ever claim however to be, himself, that eye-witness. The Gospel possibly originated in or near Ephesus which was becoming an important Christian center by the end of the first century. The author of the Gospel According to John, is a very educated person schooled in philosophy and rhetoric. His Greek, unlike that of Mark, is flawless, and he draws upon Greek philosophy of the Logos (the Word or Wisdom of God) as the foundation for his Christology. Although probably familiar with the earlier synoptic Gospels, this author takes a very different approach. Instead of focusing upon the humanity of Jesus, with a gradual revelation of his divinity, this Gospel begins immediately by declaring Jesus to be eternally God. This high Christology is maintained throughout the Gospel, which for the most part describes different events, a different chronology, and somewhat different characters than do the other Gospels. Jesus is presented as the New Covenant which replaces the previous Covenant with the Jews. Through the stories selected, Jesus replaces the Temple, the purification rites, the feast of Succoth, and the Paschal Lamb and Passover all with his own person. As the other Gospels might be seen as witnesses to what Jesus did and taught, this Gospel is a theological revelation of who Jesus is. Although Christianity remained illegal, after the death of Nero in 68 AD, the persecution of the faith was not actively pursued and Christians lived in relative peace. In 81 AD, Emperor Domitian began his rule. The persecutions began again during his reign, and became more extensive and widespread until his death in 96 AD. It was during this period of persecution that the Book of Revelation was written. The author of Revelation identifies himself of John, living on the Island of Patmos. This is probably his real name, although he should not be confused with John the Apostle, or the author of the fourth Gospel. This John writes in a very different style of Greek, and in a genre of literature called apocalyptic. Revelation has been widely misinterpreted as a description of the end of the world; however, that was not the purpose of the author. The purpose of apocalyptic literature, which was prevalent from about 200 BC until 200 AD, was to address a current situation, by projecting it into a historical or futuristic context and speaking of it in symbolic terms. Apocalyptic literature in this sense is not written today, but a similar genre from 20th century literature could include political satires such as Animal Farm, or Watership Down, which appear to be stories of animals, but are actually critiques of political and cultural ideas with which the author does not agree. In apocalyptic literature, colors, numbers, creatures of all kinds, are meant as symbols for something in the experience of the church of the time. This book was written to warn Christians about the evil of the Roman Empire (the Beast), and to encourage them to be faithful to Christ (the Lamb). It was not intended to scare anyone, but to give courage and solace to those suffering under the persecution and to assure them that ultimately Christ will triumph over the evil of the political situation they faced. It can be interpreted to give hope to all Christians being persecuted by hostile regimes and philosophies, including those who are suffering persecution and martyrdom today. And so the story of the Church continues . . .
