I want to thank all of you who voted for me, the support over the last several months is truly humbling. I have been a member of Missouri Bow Hunters for 15 years. When I think about the past presidents who have held this position I feel a little overwhelmed as I try to fill their shoes. I earn my living as a city letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. I have carried mail for 25 years and have learned that customer service is very important to people. As I look at MBH members I see the same, customers that expect good service from the officers and the B of R. Without the members and the clubs that support MBH with their money and presence there is no organization. This cannot happen in an article or at one tournament, but over time with consistent service. Each of you as members should feel that you are an important part of Missouri Bow Hunters, and that your suggestions, kind words, concerns and criticisms are being heard and acted upon. If I had an office, I would always have an open door policy. I also know that, the more the membership is involved with MBH the more each of you feel you are part of this organization. You may not realize it, but MBH members bring such a broad set of skills to the table, that if we were to utilize those skills, there would be nothing this organization could not accomplish. Please contact me if you want to help, have ideas that you feel will make MBH a better organization or if you just want to chat about promoting archery in general. I am looking forward to this challenge, and to serving you as President of Missouri Bow Hunters. I would also like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the other officers for this term. Jerry Denker has worn many hats over this past year, first as Vice President, then as acting President, then Vice President, then acting President, and he is now, once again your Vice President. continued on page 3 Club Directory ABI ARCHERY (NFAA/MBH 11-‐30-‐15) Contact: Jeff Blystone, 2804 N Union School Road, Independence, MO 64058, 816-‐796-‐4033, [email protected]; Secretary: Gregg Markowski; BofR Representative: Jeff Blystone. Owner: Jeff Friedmann, 636-‐742-‐2531 continued from page 1 Jerry is also the President of Carroll County Bow Hunters in Carrollton. Carroll County has has played host for the MBH 3D Tournament for the last three years. By day, Jerry is a constrution contractor. Tobi Rogers is the new Executive Secretary for MBH. Tobi has a masters degree in Accounting, and so her skills in that area made her a great choice for this role. Tobi grew up in the sport of archery and in Missouri Bow Hunters, her grandparents Earl and Millie Foster served in many different roles within MBH over the years, and are both members of the Missouri Bow Hunters Hall of Fame. Jeff Blystone continues to serve as the Large and Small Game Committee Chair. In addition to the great work Jeff does with MBH, his day job is with KCP&L. In his role with MBH, Jeff works closely with both the Missouri Department of Conservation and with the Missouri Conservation Federaltion in order to make sure that all of our members are informed of any changes or information that would impact bow hunting in Missouri. Jeff serves as your contact for registering both large and small game kills within the state and makes sure that our members are recognized for their kills. Kathy Potter is also one of our veteran officers as she continues to serve as the NFAA Director for Missouri Bow Hunters. Kathy serves as a liason between MBH and the NFAA, making sure all of our members are kept abreast of any information or changes in rules and by-laws for the national organization. Kathy and her husband Richard are the proud owners of East Fork Archery in Huntsville, Missouri. They have an indoor range and also a field range, and hold tournaments thoughout the year, drawing large numbers of shooters every time. You can always count on a great shoot, as well as a wonderful time catching up with our archery family from all over the state. My wife, Candy rounds out our officers for this term. Candy will be handling our publications, both the Release and the annual Archery Guide, as well as promoting our tournaments and Missouri Bow Hunters in general. Candy works for Apple, Inc., where she is a Senior Mac Advisor, providing customer support and service to customers throughout the United States and Canada. She has 30 plus years of computer and publishing experience, and will put those skills to good use for Missouri Bow Hunters. I really believe that the next two years will be a very exciting time for Missouri Bow Hunters, and also believe that the group of officers and committee leaders are excited about the prospect of rolling up our sleeves and getting started in this new year. BALES FOR SALE! Bales have been purchased for the 2015 MBH State Indoor Championshp. From those meetings and a survey that was sent to 18,000 deer hunters across the state in 2012 plus all the biological data and population trends, MDC deer biologist Jason Sumners has published several documents over the past year which describes MDC’s Deer Management Approaches for the Future. There are basically 3 major changes that are being considered which will affect the current Missouri deer hunting regulations. • Allowing the use of Crossbows during the regular archery season. • Moving the Firearms starting date one week later. • Removing or reducing the firearms antlerless season I do not have any problem with the last two proposals, however allowing the use of crossbows during the regular archery season does concern me. 1. Participation in Archery hunting in our state has continued to grow over the last several years. Are we jeopardizing this growth by allowing the use of a tool that makes it much easier to harvest a deer without putting in the required time to learn to shoot archery tackle? Part of the experience of bow hunting is the time it takes to learn to shoot accurately, place a stand in the right place for a reasonable shot distance, and execute that shot for a humane kill. Anyone who has ever picked up a crossbow knows that it can be accurately shot out to 50 yards or longer with a few minutes of practice just like a firearm. In my opinion crossbow hunting is much closer to firearms hunting than archery hunting! 2. Crossbows are already allowed for the Urban Deer Season, the Youth Deer Season, the Firearms Deer Season, Antlerless Deer Season, and the Alternative Methods Season. In 2014 that meant you could use a crossbow to legally hunt deer in Missouri for a total of 40 days. If crossbow hunting is your thing then surely there is already ample opportunity to use one. Plus if you have a medical exemption because you cannot physically draw a bow then you can use that crossbow to hunt during the regular archery season. 3. In 2012 a survey was sent to 18,000 Missouri deer hunters. This survey was sent to a random selection of hunters who had deer hunting permits 4. That means 70% of those who took the survey were firearms hunters. The results of that survey showed that 46% approved allowing crossbows and 33% disapproved the use of crossbows during the regular archery season. Of course those that only hunt deer with a firearm would approve the use of a tool that works much like a firearm because it’s easier to hunt with and requires much less dedication to master. Just because something is easier doesn’t make it right. 5. In 2012 and again in 2014 at the annual Conservation Federation of Missouri’s (CFM’s) yearly convention, resolutions to allow crossbows during the regular archery season were soundly defeated. The conventions attendees are made up of affiliate organizations across the state that represents all areas of Missouri outdoors. MBH has been an affiliate since its inception 1947. The CFM is a citizen led organization that works with MDC to make Missouri one of the leading conservation minded states in the USA. If those that are informed, dedicated, and passionate about Missouri conservation don’t think it’s a good idea then I would agree with them. I respect and genuinely like the folks at the Missouri Department of Conservation and believe they work for the good of all Missourians. Jason Sumners along with the other department deer biologists are very knowledgeable, well educated, and are doing great work. I just respectfully disagree with allowing the use of crossbows during Missouri’s Regular Archery Season.
