apture the magic of your setting in every detail. Rustic touches paired with beautiful,
refined fabrics and vivid flowers create an extravagant setting while still being very down
to earth. This theme of rustic elegance thrives through the union of rich colors cast against the
natural setting of mountains, stone, and earth. And remember, although you may be hosting
your event indoors, don’t forget to bring the outdoors in, with natural exterior elements that can
further inspire.

our flowers will help determine the ambiance and style of your
wedding. If you’re going for a classic, elegant look, consider roses
or calla lilies. If you’re wedding is casual, daises or carnations may be perfect. The location can also define which flowers will look best. For example,
carnations may look more fitting in a small chapel than in a large formal
cathedral.
For a beautiful fall wedding, consider the splendid colors of the season.
Burnt orange, crimson, and gold make stunning flower arrangements. These
vibrant colors against an ivory wedding dress are breathtaking! Fashionable
fall flowers are chrysanthemums, hydrangeas, cosmos, gerbera daisies, and
carnations. One trendy and fragrant flower is Chocolate Cosmos.
A winter wedding also has many options. Red, merlot, forest green,
glistening gold, and winter white are all beautiful wedding colors. Popular
winter flowers include roses, anemones, carnations, amaryllis, ranunculus,
and poinsettias.
Ideas for wedding flowers
• Hand-tied bouquets are the most popular look right now. The stems
are cut at approximately 8’’ and then wrapped with ribbon, leaving an inch
or two of the stems showing. The color of the ribbon can match or contrast
with the bride’s gown.
• Flowers on the wedding cake, cake knife, and goblets are a beautiful
way to add color and flair to the reception and will look striking in your
photos.
• Wearing a wreath in your hair can look whimsical and enchanted. This
trend is usually for younger brides.
• Large bouquets of sunflowers or hydrangeas can make a strong statement of color.
• One single rose, calla lily, or amaryllis is an elegant alternative.
• Using a variety of flowers and colors will create interesting texture.
• Choosing only one kind of flower and bunching them tightly into a
bouquet is gaining popularity.
• Long-stemmed bouquets are currently not often selected, but this type
of bouquet will give you a retro look that can be extraordinary.
• Add non-floral items such as shells, berries, or feathers for a personal
or eclectic bouquet.

Tips for your color palette
• Pick up a box of crayons or paint chip cards. You’ll find every color
imaginable to mull over.
• If you have a favorite flower, let its color guide you. You may choose
periwinkle to go with hydrangeas, or red to go with amaryllis.
• Your bouquet will be more noticeable by using a contrasting color to
your dress and your bridesmaid’s dresses.
• If you are wearing white and you want white flowers, be sure to choose
the “right white.” There are many shades of white: pure white, ivory white,
pinkish white, etc. Take a fabric sample of your dress to the florist to be sure
you get the correct shade.
• If your bridesmaids are wearing a strong color, it’s best to choose a
contrasting color for their bouquets. Trying to be too matchy-match can
cause your beautiful bouquets to fade into the dress. It’s also very difficult to
get the perfect shade of flower to match a specific color dress.
• Keep in mind that different shades of one color will add interest to
your overall look.

20 | I Do! Fall/Winter 2011
Fall is ideal for being creative with pumpkins, pinecones, and acorns.
These elements of nature can give your wedding décor a natural or rustic
ambiance.
Winter weddings lend themselves to a more formal atmosphere. By adding crystals and glass objects, you’ll create a feeling of icy glamour.
When choosing the vases and containers for your arrangements, remember that using different shapes and styles will offer increased visual interest.
It’s also appropriate to use a vase or container that has special meaning to
you.
Whichever colors and flowers you settle on, it should — as with everything else about your wedding — be an expression of you. This is your day
to enjoy, be happy, and celebrate the beginning of your new life together.

Creative and Fun Reception Ideas

Reception with a woodsy feel
If your reception location is indoors, you can still get that woodsy, outdoorsy feel! Give the
space some warmth by adding potted trees or tall greenery around the tables and against the
walls. It will give the area a natural look, while still staying elegant and refined. And for the
tables, place birch branches in tall vases with leaves, flower petals, and tea lights surrounding
it. With just a touch of that rustic feel, it’s easy to pull off ! And for the cake, instead of stacking
the tiers, have each cake placed atop a small tree stump. It’s the perfect woodsy accent, and
looks so beautifully natural! (Just be sure you make sure the tree stump is clean and straight!)

Confetti décor
This is a fun DIY project that’s perfect for reception décor and also for
the end of the night send-off ! To make your own confetti mix, use a 1/2inch hole punch to punch holes in tissue paper, vellum, Mylar, glitter paper,
and magazine pages. Consider a decorative hole punch — they come in a
variety of designs. Scatter some confetti down the middle of your reception
tables, and put the rest in glassine envelopes to distribute to guests at the end
of the night — they can toss it as you say goodbye!
Guestbook with a twist
Why not spice up this wedding tradition? Rather than having everyone
just sign their name in your guestbook, step it up a notch and have someone
snap poloroid photos of the guest(s). Have them write a message to the bride
and groom on their polaroid picture, and you can make a fun photo album
with them later. It’s the perfect accent to a retro-themed reception.
Chalkboard menus
Instead of printing off dozens of menus for the reception tables — can
we say, expensive! — write out the menu on a large chalkboard (or many
small ones) in pretty colors and cursive handwriting (the perfect job for the
artist in the family!). It’s a dose of something different that’s creative and
saves money.
Make your own music
Compile all your favorite songs on your iPod and get a musically-inclined
friend to be in charge of the entertainment. You’ll have complete control
over the songs being played, and it will be a little more laid back and fun!
Mason jar vases
Used at weddings as décor, mason jars create a funky vintage vibe that’s
so simple. You can do a variety of things with mason jars — fill the bottom
with sand and place a tea light for some chic candlelight. You can place little
bouquets of flowers inside them and have a gathering of different sized-jars
as centerpieces. You can even paint the inside with acryllic paint, and use
them as vases that pop with color! Just be sure to spray paint only the inside
of the jar (metallic gold or silver work beautifully, but any color will do), and
do this project outside! For an even easier project, gather dried herbs like

Revamp your escort cards
This idea shakes up the escort card routine. Instead of having simple
cards with names and table specifications, give your reception tables fun
names. This will make it entertaining for guests when finding their seats. For
example, do you both love to travel? You could name each table a different
country or city where you’ve vacationed together! Print guests’ names and
tables on a map or card stock decorated with travel stamps for a little dose
of extra fun! Table for two in Paris? Yes, please!
If you just can’t get enough candlelight, adhere place cards onto votive
candles. Your guests will have a little flame to guide them to their seat. What’s
more, it adds to the table’s décor when your guests sit down!

flowers because they’re made one petal at a time. You can save a few dollars
by choosing fresh flowers for your baker to place on the cake. Ask your baker
lots of questions so you know you are getting just what you want. Remember,
you’ll need to discuss the price, deposit, due dates, etc., as well as making the
enjoyable decisions of flavor, icing, and design.

All About ~ Flavors & Icing
Wedding cakes are available in any flavor you can dream up. A current
favorite is ‘mudslide’ which is a blend of chocolate, coffee, and nuts. Red
velvet is also frequently chosen and is especially fitting during the winter
months. Chose a flavor you love, but remember you want your guests to
enjoy the cake as well.

wearing colors from their college days.
Porcelain doves, a classic trend from the past, is very elegant. Using a
family heirloom can offer a sentimental tribute. A whimsical idea is to use
cookie cut-outs. Gingerbread or sugar cookies decorated to look like the
bride and groom are an endearing way to express the couple’s personality.
Fresh flowers placed on top and falling around the tiers is currently one of
the more popular choices.
As always, remember, it’s your wedding. So choose carefully, but choose
what you love and what will make your day special and memorable for
you!
Ah, the wedding cake.
Perhaps the sweetest part of
the reception and certainly
something many guests look
forward to. Years ago, the
cake was simply something
yummy to eat. These days
however, the wedding cake is
a significant expression of the
bride and groom, and they’re
willing to spend hundreds, if
not thousands, on their unique
cake. Finding the right baker is
just as important as finding the
right dress!
All About ~ Cake Photos
You’ll need a designated table for displaying your wedding cake. This
table will serve as a focal point and a perfect accessory for your wedding cake
photos. Because all of the attention will be on you when you cut the cake, be
sure to pay special attention to the details when decorating this table.
All About ~ Cake Toppers
While the standard bride and groom standing stiffly side-by-side has
gone out of vogue, new ideas for cake toppers are limitless, and anything
goes. These days, figurines can be found in almost any scenario you can
imagine; from the groom fishing and the bride waiting on him, to the couple

All About ~ Design
For continuity, the overall look of your cake should complement the
elements of your wedding theme. If you have lots of lace or ruffles in your
dress, you can incorporate that design on your cake. Another trend is using
your china pattern as a guide for the design on your cake. If your color
theme is strong, the cake can carry that look as well. You can find lots of
inspiration in wedding magazines, and it’s a good idea to bring your favorite
photos to the first cake consultation.

All About ~ Shape & Size
The current trend of wedding cakes
is traditional with a twist. The shape can
be square, round, tiered upright or even
off-centered to give an illusion of falling.
Wedding cakes can even be cupcakes!
A 3-tiered cake will serve approximately 50-100 people, while a five-tiered
cake will serve 200 guests. Remember
the more complicated the cake, the
more expensive. To save money, you can
order one small cake for the bride and
groom to cut and have photographed,
then have a sheet cake of the same flavor and icing to serve your guests.
All About ~ Your Budget
Your personality along with your
budget will determine which cake is
best for you. The most expensive cakes
are those with handmade sugar paste

he wedding cake is primarily a
Western tradition. Newlyweds cut
the cake together as a symbol of unity
and commitment to each other. As it
can be one of the largest expenses of
your total wedding budget, you’ll want
to make careful and well-informed
decisions. It’s important for your cake
to be compatible with the season, your
dress, venue, flowers, etc.

Choosing what to wear...
It can be a bit overwhelming to try and decide what wedding day accessories you’ll wear in one sitting. But before you get too confused with all the
endless options, focus on what you’d like to feature on your big day. Of course, you’ll want to have a unified, beautiful look as a whole, but what physical
features do you really want to shine? Is it your slender neckline? Or your delicate wrists? What about your hair that can’t help but glow in the sunshine?
Whatever your favorite features are, decide which you’d like to accentuate. You’re now ready to choose the perfect accessories!

Tiaras...
If you’re a little wary of donning a tiara on your wedding day, you may
want to think twice these days. Tiaras can be as simple or as luxurious as
you want. They look wonderful snuggled in front of a classy updo, but also
complement a hairstyle that’s long and flowy. Looking at all the options
may just change your mind! After all, there’s nothing more “here comes
the bride” than a princess-y tiara!
Statement necklaces...
The photo to the left shows off the perfect statement necklace that
looks gorgeous on every skin tone! This necklace packs a lot of bling but

— either way, you’ll look exquisitely bold and dashing.

Drop earrings are being seen all over wedding aisles these days!
They’re incredibly versatile and can lengthen your neck. They’re beautiful
worn with a bold necklace with a lot of shine, a simple one, and even
without a necklace. They’re a decadent statement all their own!
Bring on the brooches...
Brooches are classic details that can be added to a bride’s visage.
Lately, they’ve become more and more popular when added to not-sotraditional places, like the hair or even the heels! Place them in your hair
for a vintage-inspired look or attach one to your bouquet for a touch of
the unexpected. If you’re wearing a simple gown, pin it onto your dress or
pumps for extra added sparkle.

Pumps with added spunk...
Consider wearing bright, bold pumps — it’s the perfect pop of color
underneath your dress! It’s all the rage these days to forego the white heels
for something with a little more spunk! Match your bridemaids’ dresses or go
with your favorite bright color that matches the overall décor! Makes for fun
photo ops, plus you’ll be able to wear them again after your big day!

Fabric flowers...
More and more these days, brides are fashioning fabric flowers in their hair.
It creates a lovely, airy look that’s graceful and sweet. If you have dark hair,
choose lighter colors like white, ivory, or pale pink fabric flowers. For blondes or
lighter brunettes, white will always look stunning, however consider some darker
shades like burgundy or a deep lavender that will truly stand out.
Instricate headbands, hair clips, and combs...
There are so many options when it comes to wearing hair accessories. If
you’re shying away from the classic tiara, headbands are a wonderful second
option. They also look fabulous in both updos and hair that stays down.
With hair clips and combs, you can really add detail to your overall look in
an elegant way. The clips that are really “in” right now are ones that look like
flowers or vines traipsing through the hair. They look lovely if you’re having
your hair gathered at the nape of the neck.

Jewelry that pops...
Rather than going with the classic pearl necklace and pearl earrings, why
not shake things up a bit and wear jewelry with some extra detailing? Western
North Carolina has some amazing local jewelry designers, and brides nowadays
are always incorporating a bit of their own flair in their jewelry. Molly
Dingledine, an Asheville-based jewelry designer has some exquisite necklaces
and earrings that are flowery and fun!
Chunky bracelets...
If you don’t want a bold necklace or flashy earrings, you can still make a
statement by accentuating your wrists with some major arm candy! Chunky
detailed bracelets are unexpected but look amazing when holding your
bouquet. They’re a dash of something different and will get plenty of positive
attention!
