After many years of the current committee’s help, organisation, hard work and commitment to the Papakura Parents Centre, Annette Svendsen stepped down as our President at the AGM this year. The new President was elected, congratulations to Philippa Goodin. Thank you Philippa for stepping forward to carry on the good work! Although sadly for us, Philippa will be moving house at the end of the year so we are looking for a NEW PRESIDENT – do you think you can fill the role? You will receive lots of support from current and past members of the Committee. Although a few of the roles have been filled we still need some more volunteers, so if you’d like to join a fun, energetic and friendly committee, contact Philippa ([email protected] or 09 297 7461) today to discuss how your skills can help Papakura Parents Centre!! We will work in with you and your availability and offer a variety of meeting options (morning/afternoon tea or pizza night!). All are welcome to join (especially dads) so let your friends and family know! New members Our penultimate antenatal course started on 23 September and welcomed some lovely new members. Baby Bathing Our thanks to Shelley and Kevin for bringing their perfectly behaved baby girl, Samantha along to the Practical Parenting session to show the Class 4 couples what a young baby is like and to watch her have a bath. Page 6 PAPAKURA PARENTS CENTRE Elizabeth Campbell Update Philippa met with Gaylene from the Papakura Council in early September and is glad to report that there are only a few details to get sorted before we sign the lease and can move... The Council showed Philippa a lovely large carpeted room, our storage room, the kitchen and the hallway that we are able to use. Gaylene said that the Council is happy for us to install cupboards in the carpeted room and to attach our whiteboard to the wall in the room. They also agreed to let us put a sofa for mums with milk in the foyer down in the hall bit out of the way of the toy library. The Parents Centre are required to install gates at each end of the grassed area and idea was hatched that they should be sliding gates so that when they are not in use they can be tucked away beside the building. It will be permanent so we won’t have to lift it to our storage room after every use. This is one of the criteria of the Ministry of Education – that we have a fenced in area. For this we will need to apply for special funding from the Ministry of Education, and fundraise as much as we can. The Council feel that putting in a heat pump would be too expensive at this stage, so come winter we will be relying on our gas and column oil heaters. We will look into this in the future and may even consider approaching the ASB Community Trust for some funding. Gaylene is going to amend the draft lease contract and send it to Philippa and once the Committee has perused and given the ok we then get a final contract, get it signed and then move in. Philippa is determined that we are all moved into the EC centre before she leaves as President near Christmas time. The Papakura Fire Brigade want to burn the current Parents Centre house for their training if the Council can’t find anyone to buy it. We’ll let you know if this is going to happen and you could bring the children down to watch (and let them feel how hot, and dangerous, it can be).
